Senior center to celebrate 10 years

BREVARD COUNTY — The Wickham Park Senior Center has been offering seniors a wide scope of programs that promotes healthy liv-ing, the arts, travel, recreation, com-puter classes and more.

To celebrate 10 years of supporting the community, volunteers at the Wickham Park Senior Center are hosting an open house from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, at 2785 Leisure Way, Melbourne.

Seniors will have the opportunity to watch demonstrations of all the programs offered at the center, as well visit the tables of local commu-nity organizations, according to Glo-ria Robinson.

She added that the Brevard County Fire Department will attend to show seniors how to place their medical history into containers, which will be stored in the refrigerator or freezer to be found for emergencies.

“We wanted to make sure that it was publicized that the whole build-ing is run by volunteers, and we work hard to keep it good,” Ms. Robinson said.

The senior center accepts member-

ships for residents 50 years and older for a fee of $20 a year.

Members particularly enjoy taking day trips, which are offered each month, to larger over-night trips to New Orleans and Ireland that are more spread out throughout the year.

“The facility itself was purpose built by Brevard County, so every-thing in it was geared toward seniors,” Ms. Robinson said. “We have a great bingo group that comes twice a week that we couldn’t do without.

“We have bridge, which is really taxing and keeps your mind agile; we have loads of exercise classes from the simple to the sublime – every-thing from chair yoga to Tai chi, jazzercise to Zumba; and we have seminars from time to time to help seniors with legal or financial mat-ters,” Ms. Robinson added.

A visiting nurse will attend to seniors to give flu shots once a year, and will check seniors’ blood pres-sure levels monthly.

Volunteers are still needed to help run the self-funded senior center, and donations are welcome to pro-vide raffles and door prizes for the open house.

gram, so I did, and I like it.”“Mr. McInnish is really dedicated to this

program,” added Colby Wilson, a junior who also received his AAA certificate. “I’ve always loved airplanes since I was a little kid, and I’ve always wanted to work on them and be around them. This program is a perfect opportunity to do that.”

In the Aviation Fabrication and Assem-bly program, students get a hands-on opportunity to work on planes and learn crucial skills to become an aircraft techni-cian.

These skills include painting, welding, riveting, working with the plane’s hydraulic systems, wiring and more.

Last year, Mr. Scott was instrumental in donating a Mitsubishi Diamond 1A air-craft from Tampa for the students to assemble.

“One of the most challenging aspects was that someone had cut the wires,” Colby said. “We also had trouble with the landing gear and hydraulics system.”

Students come from all over the county just to participate in this course, said Mr.

McInnish. He added that he can take up to 125 students per school year, although most of those seats are occupied by stu-dents who elect to take multiple courses under his program.

As a former Vietnam War veteran who joined the United States Coast Guard for 22 years, Mr. McInnish retired from active duty to teach technology for the Alabama educational system. Just as he was retiring from teaching and moved to Florida for his wife’s health, he was asked to work for Eau Gallie High School.

“I was asked if I’d start this program because of my aviation background,” Mr. McInnish said. “I’m a master level school teacher, and an AMP, which means Air-frame and Powerplant Mechanic FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).

“I’m still working because I love to see the success of the kids,” he continued. “I like seeing kids going on and not just get-ting a job, but having a future.”

As Mr. McInnish prepares his classes for the next AAA certification exam, he said he hopes to see more students passing, now that he is more familiar with what the exam covers.

Service dogs a bit too muchThere is a time and a place for every-

thing. I believe a guide dog assisting a blind person is no problem, but a senior citizen bringing in their so called “service dog” into a doctor’s office or a hospital waiting room is a bit too much. Especially, when the dog growls at you when you walk past them.

If the person needs a medical proce-dure does the dog accompany them to the operating room? My nephew is an Iraqi veteran, who lives in Montana, and will be visiting me this winter. He told me he could bring his service animal with him. We’ll visit that same doctor’s office.

I hope no one will object. It’s an Alas-kan Timber Wolf.

Blame for immigration problemCongress is to blame! Obama put

together a committee to resolve it (gang of eight) after some in Congress didn’t like his DACA decision and nothing hap-pened.

Thank you Rubio! Speaker Ryan said they can’t pass comprehensive plan so they’ll pass it piece by piece; not one bill was introduced. Where’s E-Verify? Thank you Posey!

Trump declares an emergency and where’s Congress? Thank you Posey, Rubio and Rick Scott! Congress inaction has been dividing the country and enough is enough. Vote them out if they aren’t part of the solution!

The evidence may not be credible

This concerns the May 24 rant, “There is evidence”, that cites the work of an archaeologist named Ron Wyatt. The rant states the information can be found at www.wyattmuseum.com/discoveries. Does anyone believe this website will pro-vide honest, objective information?

I checked out other sources and the consensus on the Internet is that Ron Wyatt was a fraud. According to Wikipe-dia, although Wyatt was noted for advo-cating almost 100 alleged Bible-related discoveries, “He has been dismissed by scientists, historians, biblical scholars, and other creationists.” To cite another source (of many), the Christian Courier website states, “His work has been debunked thoroughly by professional archaeologists and respected biblical scholars.”

I am not stating that our Lord never existed, but please do not cite the work of Ron Wyatt as proof that He did exist.

High school from homeThe Florida Department of Education

needs to begin implementing and advo-cating online learning for students to obtain a certified high school diploma.

If the technology infrastructure is there to obtain a college degree online from numerous universities, why not a Florida high school diploma? Kids today are so adept with technology that the idea of a physical classroom seems obsolete. But more importantly, they’d be safer at home than inside a school classroom.

If I had a child attending high school this fall and the ability to obtain a high school diploma via online learning was available, I’d have them learn at home full time until they graduated.

Going the distance

Alex Schierholtz/Staff photographerMichael Scrapiglia, of Melbourne, drives a disc during the ‘29th Annual Melbourne Open Disc Golf Tournament’ on June 1, at Wickham Park.

May 27, Memorial Day, brought back memories of where and what had happened in my life 66 years ago.

I was standing with a large group of men in a barbed wired enclosed POW compound in North Korea. Our cap-tors had brought us together for an announcement. We stood there with bodies that stunk from not bathing, lice running down our emaciated bodies, wondering what hellish demands they were going to put us through this time. The Korean camp commander stood facing us with a big grin announcing that an armistice had ended the war, we would be going home soon.

We all stood there showing no emotion, not believing what we had just head. They’ve told us so many lies over the years that this seemed

impossible. However, thank God, it turned out to be true. I went through the “Big Switch” and was home in October of 1953.

On Memorial Day, as usual, the news agencies remembered World War II and the Vietnam War as they should. The Korean War, where over 33,652 American military men lost their lives is seldom, if ever, men-tioned (included in that number are six courageous crew members who did not get a chance to bail out of our bullet riddled B-29 bomber before it crashed).

It is a forgotten war, but I can remember.

inspections for private HOAsThe city of Melbourne is offering free

stormwater system inspections during the month of June to private homeowner associations (HOAs) to encourage pre-ventative maintenance before the first big storm of the season.

An engineering inspector from the city will check outfall structures, ponds and other parts of a private community’s stormwater conveyance system to ensure it is working properly. However, the exist-ing stormwater conveyance piping will not be inspected. If any deficiencies are found, the city will provide a courtesy rec-ommendation for measures that the HOA can take to correct the problems. The city will not perform work to correct the defi-ciencies.

June 11 city council meeting to be held at Hilton Melbourne

Rialto PlaceThe June 11, regular city council meet-

ing will be held in the Wakefield Ballroom at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place, located at 200 Rialto Place in Melbourne.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

The meeting is being moved due to large expected turnout for the first read-ing and discussion of an ordinance to rename Airport Boulevard to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard.

The Government-in-the-Sunshine Manual recommends that when a large turnout is expected, public boards and

commissions should take reasonable steps to accommodate the expected public audience, such as moving the meeting to a larger room. During the May 14 meeting (the last time Council discussed renaming a street in Melbourne in honor of Dr. King) attendance exceeded the room capacity of the City Hall Council Cham-ber, which can hold 215 people. The ball-room area of the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place can accommodate between 450 and 500 people.

The City of Melbourne has sold the parking lot at the corner of Strawbridge Avenue and Waverly Place behind Meg O’Malley’s restaurant. It is no longer a public parking lot. Construction of the new hotel is expected to begin on that site in June.

There is public parking available in the City Hall parking garage, in the lot east of the railroad tracks and on other lots throughout downtown Melbourne. On-street parking is also available along New Haven Avenue, on intersecting side streets and on the streets around City Hall.

South Brevard Historical Society will host a presentation for the month of June on "Good Old Days: Growing up in Melbourne". The discussion will be headed by Beth Glover and Sally Stewart, Melbourne residents since the 1940's.

From the SBHS flyer: "Life was a lot different on the Space Coast in the 1950s and 1960s. It was like watching the Andy Griffith show growing up in Mayberry. Everybody, and I mean everybody, knew everybody. Life was simple with simple pleasures. Days were spent fishing hunting and watching chicken fights and dirt road horse races." The presentation will take place on Saturday, May 11 at the

‘Americana’ to be musical reflection of historyBREVARD COUNTY — As summer

kicks off, the Community Band of Bre-vard will present the final concert of its 2018-19 season, “Americana,” a patri-otic presentation featuring music from a wide range of historical eras.

The concert will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9 at the Merritt Island High School auditorium, 100 Mustang Way off North Courtenay Parkway.

Admission is free and no ticket is required.

“Music has accompanied much of American history and events, whether performed in town squares, on the bat-tlefield, in movies or cartoons, sports venues, dance halls, etc.,” said Mike Freeman, the band’s publicity manager, spokesperson and flute/piccolo player.

“We’ve done a cross section of Amer-ican history, as told through music, whether in the form of patriotic marches, folk dance and folk melodies, humor, or classic dialog,” Mr. Freeman added. “There is something to reflect

upon in every number.”Led by conductor Marion Scott, the

set list will include “America The Beau-tiful,” “Yankee Doodle,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “American Civil War Fantasy,” “American Folk Rhapsody” and the “Looney Tunes Overture.”

Additionally, the band will present two pieces narrated by Mr. Freeman: the baseball-inspired musical poem “Casey At the Bat,” which was pub-lished in 1888, along with Aaron Cop-land’s orchestral work “Lincoln Por-trait,” which was composed while the United States was involved in World War II. The latter closes with portions of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

“As the narrator, I look forward to entertaining the audience with stories set to a musical background,” Mr. Free-man added. “I’m also excited about the closure of our 34th concert season, with season 35 beginning in Septem-ber.”

MELBOURNE — Orlando Melbourne International Airport announced that American Airlines is increasing its week-end flights to and from Philadelphia International Airport beginning Dec. 19.

Flights will be operated on a two-class Bombardier CRJ-700, with nine business class seats and 56 main cabin seats. The flight from PHL departs at 8:20 a.m. daily, arriving in Melbourne at 10:58 a.m. Flights depart MLB at 11:35 a.m. and arrive in PHL at 2:02 p.m., providing

greater access and connectivity to Ameri-can’s trans-Atlantic gateway.

“New daily service between Orlando Melbourne and Philadelphia provides our customers more freedom and choice in their travels,” said Jim Moses, Vice Presi-dent of PHL Hub Operations. “Whether escaping the cold on one of Florida’s renowned beaches or taking a dream trip to Europe, PHL connects customers across the globe to more than 120 destina-tions in the United States, the Caribbean and Europe.”

Philadelphia has been a top develop-ment market for MLB Airport Executive Director Greg Donovan, A.A.E. The announcement comes just a handful of

months after American Airlines added both Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National to MLB’s schedule. MLB is the closest airport to Port Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center—and provides convenient access to Orlando-area attrac-tions and the region’s pristine ocean beaches.

“As predicted, both routes are perform-ing exceptionally well,” said Mr. Donovan. “Expanding to daily service was a natural transition to feed the pent-up service demand along the eastern seaboard. It’s also an indicator that the local Space Coast market is supporting the routes we are bringing to serve them.”

According to Space Coast Office of

Tourism Executive Director Peter Cranis, the region is poised for tremendous tour-ism growth, and increased nonstop daily service from a legacy carrier such as American Airlines, is critical to that growth. “We have all of the ingredients necessary to attract and serve even more tourists at our great hotels, attractions and within our natural Florida environment. We look forward to growing our partner-ship with Orlando Melbourne Interna-tional Airport even further.”

MELBOURNE — The Continental Flambé has been serving patrons of Downtown Melbourne for a number of years, and although ownership has changed hands within the past two years, the Ortiz brothers have kept its menu faithful to what diners enjoy most.

Inside the restaurant, diners will find a peaceful atmosphere with artwork of colorful fish by Juan Valdez Perez and black and white photographs of New York City by Karen Gamez for sale on the walls.

Owners Bladimir and Ramon Ortiz decided to take over the restaurant after it was closed for nearly three years. Although the Continental Flambé is their first restaurant, the Ortiz broth-ers’ passion for the business shows in the restaurant’s revival.

The Ortiz brothers also own 321 Tapas Bar, which is located next door to Continental Flambé, and is available for party rentals.

“We partnered up with the previous owner [Ratib Ahmad] of Continental Flambé, and he was the one that helped

us out with the menu and all of the same old recipes,” Bladimir Ortiz said.

“MCO Tours the USA” will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, June 12-13, at the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd.

Attendees are welcome to bring cool-ers and boxed dinners to enjoy while the Melbourne Community Orchestra performs popular American classics such as “America the Beautiful” and John Denver’s “Take Me Home Coun-try Roads.”

The orchestra will take a moment to honor our military by performing the “Armed Forces Salute,” and service members in attendance will be asked to stand in recognition when their service branch is played.

Maestro Mark Nelson will sing “God Bless the USA” featuring several musi-cians, and audience members are encouraged to wear red, white and blue to the concerts.

“I believe the audience will reflect on how lucky we are to be an American and to live in the greatest country in the world. God Bless America!” Mr. Nelson said.

much done so he moved on to differ-ent ventures, but it’s pretty much true to the original Continental Flambé.”

For those unfamiliar with the Conti-nental Flambé, it serves a variety of French cuisine. The menu includes a few new dishes outside of the entrees, such as a special of the day, which is created by the head chef, according to Mr. Ortiz.

He added that many of the diners enjoy the prix fixe menu, which offers four courses for the cost of $28.

On the weekends, a jazz musician entertains evening diners. Whether dining for lunch or dinner, celebrating an anniversary or just in the mood for fine dining, the Continental Flambé will not disappoint.

My guest and I shared a wonderful meal last Wednesday evening. The restaurant had an intimate environ-ment where we could enjoy a conver-

sation without feeling like we were bothering the table next to us.

We each started the night with a glass of wine – a Sauvignon blanc and a white Riesling. Accompanied with our wine was a basket of fresh, warm bread with herbs and olive oil for dip-ping.

We chose to go with the prix fixe menu, as everything on the menu looked delicious. For our appetizers, I ordered the soup du jour, which was a cream of asparagus and mushroom soup. My guest ordered mussels, toma-toes and artichoke in a lemon butter sauce.

Each dish was light and savory, without filling you up too quickly before the salads arrived.

Our entrees included angel hair pasta with chicken and tomatoes, and mustard and maple coated salmon with braised leeks and tomatoes.

After finishing our entrées, we each commented on the wonderful season-ing of our dishes. My chicken tasted fresh and a little zesty, and the toma-

toes had a sweet, juicy burst of flavor with each bite.

My guest said she enjoyed the coat-ing on the salmon, and that if you were looking for something light for dinner that was as satisfying as a heartier dish, this was a great item to select.

Lastly, our desserts came out and we still managed to have room to enjoy them. My guest ordered chocolate covered strawberries, and I received the crème brulee. It was the perfect way to end an evening after being served a series of fine dishes.

We also have to give credit to our server, Maria, who was wonderful to us throughout the night. She was very attentive and knew when it was appro-priate to bring the next course. She also took some time to show us the private room next door that is avail-able for larger parties up to 30 people.

The Continental Flambé is open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. Monday through Sunday. It is located at 936 E. New Haven Ave., Melbourne.

For more information, call (321) 372-6002 or search for Continental Flambé on Facebook.

and soloists include Angelica Ramirez, cello; David Borst, bassoon; Laura Earle, English horn; and David Ewing, trumpet.

Although this season will end with “MCO Tours the USA,” Mr. Nelson said he is looking forward to celebrating the orchestra’s 30th anniversary season beginning in the fall.

“It’s always a bittersweet feeling when we arrive at our last concert of the season,” Mr. Nelson said. “Howev-er, the music committee and I have already started planning for next sea-son. We will continue to thrill our audiences with many of their favorite selections and continue introducing them to music that is due to become their ‘new’ favorites.”

Reflecting on the past season, Mr. Nelson said that one of his favorite concerts to conduct was the Melbourne Community Orchestra’s Broadway concert.

“My daughter, Elizabeth Bublitz, a professional singer and musician, appeared as our guest soloist,” he said. “It was a thrill to work and conduct with her. Based on the audience reac-tion and feedback, I’m sure she’ll be appearing with the orchestra in the not too distant future!”

The Melbourne Community Orches-tra is a nonprofit organization that puts on a series of seven free concerts each season. The orchestra is comprised of 50-plus volunteer musicians from stu-dent players to adult hobbyists, and full-time professionals.
