Declarefor high school students

During the rhetoric stage of learning, students learn to apply the rules of logic to their knowledge in order to DECLARE their conclusions both verbally and in writing.

My Father's World integrates Bible, history, and English to help students grow in their understanding of a Biblical worldview.

High School Overview . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 46

Ancient History and Literature (Year 1) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 48Declare God’s Glory

A verse-by-verse reading of the entire Old Testament encourages challenging, practical, daily application. Worldviews of ancient societies and their literature are studied and compared to a Biblical worldview. Each year of high school includes scheduled participation in student-selected community service projects.

World History and Literature (Year 2) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 50Declare God’s Sovereignty

A verse-by-verse reading of the New Testament is combined with personal application from Experiencing God Youth Edition and other impacting resources. Church and world histories are studied from the time of Rome to the present.

U.S. History to 1877 (Year 3) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 52Declare God’s Kingdom

Investigatefor family learning through 8th grade

In the logic stage of learning, children INVESTIGATE cause and effect as they begin to think more analytically and understand how facts fit together into a logical framework.

Integrating Bible, chronological history, geography, science, literature, music, and art helps children to understand the world around them.

Multi-Age Family Learning Cycle Guide (3rd – 8th Grade) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24

Exploring Countries and Cultures (Year 1) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26Investigate God’s Heart

God calls us to share His love with the world. A study of the Gospel of Matthew and stories of missionaries help children understand God’s heart for all people. Students are introduced to the physical and spiritual needs of mankind as they learn about ecosystems and lifestyles in different parts of the world. This foundational year prepares students to view the upcoming study of chronological history with God’s heart and mind.

Creation to the Greeks (Year 2) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30Investigate God’s Law

See God’s hand and His plan throughout ancient history. An overview of the Old Testament, which serves as a key history text, allows students to study the Bible and ancient history side by side. Old Testament stories and celebrations come to life as families experience the Old Testament feasts, the ten plagues, and much more. Science experiments point to God’s design and purpose in Creation. Creation science teaches about dinosaurs and other discoveries from this time period.

Rome to the Reformation (Year 3) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 34Investigate God’s Mercy

Gain an overview of the New Testament and the life of Jesus including a special focus on the books of Luke, Philippians, and 1 John. Roman civilizations, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Reformation are viewed in the context of Christ and the early church. A study of astronomy and the human body is viewed from a Biblical perspective.

Exploration to 1850 (Year 4) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 38Investigate God’s Faithfulness

Studying and memorizing the book of James helps children understand man’s struggles in world exploration. Inspirational true stories of faithful men and women encourage us to press on in difficult times. God’s creative hand is revealed through a scientific study of plants and animals.

1850 to Modern Times (Year 5) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 42Investigate God’s Call

Stories from around the world and a life-changing Bible study teach basic Christian beliefs and invite families to live out the amazing privilege and responsibility of sharing God’s story of love with all people. Learn how prayer greatly impacts situations in our world, including many notable historical happenings. A beginning study of chemistry and physics offers many hands-on opportunities to recognize God’s ultimate power in our universe.

Basic or Deluxe Package—What’s the Difference? We are often asked, “What is the difference between the Basic and Deluxe Packages?” and “Do I really need the items in the Deluxe Package?” The option of a Basic Package was created to offer choices for our customers. Because the Deluxe Package has excellent books that may already be part of a family’s library, offering a Basic Package gives families a great discount as well as the option of purchasing any items needed to complete their Deluxe Package. We also wanted to provide families on a tight budget with an option that includes all of the basic elements for each year’s study. The Basic Package has the essential items needed for the year, but choosing the Deluxe Package will bring a richer, fuller experience.

What Are Student Sheets?Student Sheets are convenient, consumable pages designed to make life easier for Mom! Create lasting notebooks for each child as you complete activities scheduled in the Teacher’s Manual. Student Sheets include history or geography notebook pages, map work, hands-on projects, science activities, writing projects, games, and timeline figures. One set of Student Sheets is included in a Deluxe or Basic Package. Purchase additional sets so that all your 2nd – 8th graders have their own. (Student Sheets include cardstock, color printing, and colored paper and may not be photocopied.) We recommend purchasing Student Sheets for age 3 to 1st grade as well—building unity in the family as younger children participate in games, activities, and projects with big brothers and sisters.

Hands-On Activities Enhance LearningStudents using My Father’s World not only read about important concepts and places but also discover them with simple hands-on experiments. For example, using just four items found in the average kitchen, and approximately 10 minutes of time, a student learning about Antarctica experiences first hand what it feels like in the bitter cold water and discovers why a penguin can withstand these cold conditions when a human cannot.

We recognize school days are busy, so most projects are completed in 15–20 minutes once or twice a week. My Father’s World hands-on activities—easy and time-efficient for Mom and Dad—are designed to create learning that will last.

Charlotte Mason InfluenceCharlotte Mason’s educational philosophy has influenced the development of My Father’s World. The following key principles and ideas are integrated into our curriculum:

• Structured mornings that feature short, effective lessons with unstructured afternoons left for other activities

• Study other countries and cultures early in the educational process to avoid an “arrogant” habit of mind (Year One, Exploring Countries and Cultures)

• Study history in chronological order and compare across countries in any given time period

• Read great literature aloud at grade level and above with featured living books and more

• “Century Books”—create timelines and history notebooks

• Weekly nature walks, including notebooking• Children are given direct contact with the Bible

God's Creation from A to Z DISCOVERGOD’S WORLD

God’s Creation from A to Z is a year-long hands-on learning adventure for young children. This

complete kindergarten curriculum contains all necessary subjects and is ideal for homeschool or classroom. The first two weeks focus on the Creation story from Genesis, followed by 26 hands-on, easy-to-teach thematic units that focus on the wonders in God’s creation. The sun, moon, rocks, vegetables, elephants, butterflies, and dinosaurs are just a few of the exciting topics you will explore.

ReadingThis highly successful multi-sensory phonics approach makes teaching reading easy. Hands-on and workbook activities are combined to teach letter names, 26 letter sounds (consonants and short vowels), sound blending, and correct handwriting. Students learn to read and write short vowel words. By mid-year they are reading

very simple stories. The reading lessons may be used successfully with 5-year-old and mature 4-year-old children, or with older children who are just beginning to learn letter sounds. See the next page for placement recommendations. Each unit also recommends a children’s literature book (and alternate choices from a list of over 400 books) related to the theme that becomes the focus of related activities. Borrow these books from the library, substitute picture books of your choice, or purchase the Kindergarten Literature Collection (see adjacent page).

MathAn informal, integrated approach assists parents and teachers to easily teach math concepts. In addition to the daily hands-on math routines and worksheets for each unit, many skills are woven into the lessons as students cut an apple in half, measure and compare the lengths of dinosaurs and whales, and order leaves by size. All typical kindergarten goals are taught, including counting objects, writing numerals, preparing and understanding charts and graphs, comparing, classifying, sequencing, and understanding ordinal numbers, fractions (whole/half), clocks, money, and an introduction to addition and subtraction.

Bible, Science, Creative Thinking, Children’s Literature, and ArtThese subjects are integrated into the 26 easy-to-teach thematic units. Each six-day unit focuses on one alphabet letter and one corresponding science topic. For example, in Unit 1, “S-s-sun”

• Students learn letter “s” and number 1• Study about the sun, construct and use a sundial, observe and

chart grapes as they become raisins, paint a sun, and listen to a funny book about shadows

• Learn that, like the sun, Jesus is the Light of the World

Character DevelopmentThis special focus is integrated into each unit.

• The turtle unit teaches “I don’t quit – I persevere!”• The horse unit teaches “I obey right away.”• The zebra unit teaches “I can’t hide anything from God.”

Daily LessonsClearly written step-by-step, 60–90 minute daily lessons in a grid lesson plan chart for each week are of great help to new homeschool teachers. Daily work is presented in three parts:

• 100 chart and monthly calendar• Reading lesson

By mid-year, students are reading simple stories.

Is My Child Ready for Kindergarten? We usually recommend waiting to begin kindergarten until the year your child will be five years old in September. Some older four-year-olds are ready for kindergarten. When it is time to make this decision, you can ask yourself several questions about your child:

• Is he ready to sit down and do 20–30 minutes of written work each day? • Does he have the manual dexterity to begin writing letters and words, and is he interested in

doing so? • Is your child taking time to sit down to draw and color on his own initiative?• Is he excited about starting school?

If you can answer yes to these questions, your child is probably ready for God’s Creation from A to Z kindergarten curriculum. If your child is not strong in these areas, we recommend our Preschool Package (p. 9).

What If My Child is Already Reading?Even if your four- or five-year-old is already reading, we still recommend using our kindergarten program. It is so much more than just a phonics program (and includes suggestions for advanced students). Powerful Biblical truths—many that adults wrestle with—are perfectly sized for a five-year-old. Children gain a wealth of knowledge about God’s love and His character. Hands-on thematic science units, interwoven with Biblical concepts, build a love of learning as your natural-born explorer interacts with nature. Time spent cuddled up together with a good book and doing related activities will create memories for a lifetime. Almost all young children benefit from the fine motor skill development in the program and time to mature physically, emotionally, and spiritually before advancing to the next school year.

Kindergarten Literature Collection“Mommy, read it again!” Children will love listening to this treasured collection of classic picture books, with a story corresponding to each of the 26 kindergarten thematic units. Includes stories such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Frog and Toad Are Friends, Mouse and Mole, The Tortoise and the Hare, and Katy No Pocket.* Simple, fun activities related to each story are included in the Activity Book. (These activities are a lso included in the Teacher’s Manual.) This set is ideal for those who live overseas or find it difficult to visit a library, and for anyone who prefers to own these memory-making stories. Visit our website for more information.

routine for him to know what’s next and enough variety tokeep things interesting. Most of all, we love the fact that

so much of the curriculum points him to Jesus!” –H. T.

Learning God's Story DISCOVERGOD’S WORD

Is My Child Ready to Begin First Grade? If your child has not successfully completed God’s Creation from A to Z kindergarten curriculum, please take some time to determine if your child is really ready to begin first grade:

• Does your child know the 26 letter sounds (consonants and short vowels)? Letter names are not as important.

• Is your child generally able to print alphabet letters correctly? Is he generally able to place letters accurately on kindergarten-sized lined paper?

• Can he easily read short words such as hat, pig, and men without your help and without any accompanying pictures? (Was he taught how to blend sounds, not just memorize words?)

• Is he developmentally able to sit long enough to copy 4–6 short words on kindergarten-sized lined paper without complaining or becoming tearful?

• Is your child mature enough to sit cooperatively for 20–30 minutes at a time for structured school activities? (Learning God’s Story first grade curriculum will take up to 2 hours each day to complete.)

• Will your child be six by September 1st? (We do not recommend first grade for a four-year-old, even if he appears to be ready. A mature five-year-old about whom you can answer yes to all of the above questions may be ready to begin first grade. However, we still encourage you to consider using God’s Creation from A to Z kindergarten curriculum because of all the wonderful things your child will learn about a relationship with Jesus through the integrated Bible and science. Kindergarten reading and writing assignments can be adjusted to meet the needs of a child who is already reading simple words.)

If you can answer yes to all of the above questions, your child is most likely ready for first grade. If not, we recommend that you begin with God’s Creation from A to Z kindergarten curriculum. The skills taught in kindergarten—especially reading short vowel words fluently for many months—give a child the foundation needed for success in first grade. Learning God’s Story first grade curriculum quickly reviews these skills in the first month of school and then moves on to new skills at a rapid pace.

Learning God’s Story is our newly revised complete first grade curriculum with a phonics-based

reading program that focuses on the Bible. The integrated lessons also include language arts, social studies, science, math, and art. Easy-to-teach lesson plans guide you through an entire school year.

Using a thematic approach, this learning adventure focuses on Bible history from Genesis to Revelation. Phonics lessons develop the needed skills to read Bible stories from our Bible Reader. Students retell (narrate) the Bible story and create a lovely keepsake Bible Notebook in which they summarize and illustrate Bible stories. Weekly memory verses selected from Proverbs help strengthen handwriting skills as well as Biblical character.

Hands-On ProjectsThese projects help students understand and experience the world of the Bible. Creating a timeline helps them visualize Bible stories as actual events that fit into history. Making a Bible times costume and celebrating a Sabbath meal help students understand the culture of the Bible.

ReadingStep-by-step instruction in phonics makes teaching reading easy. Learning God’s Story begins with a quick review of letter names and sounds, followed by in-depth teaching of all necessary phonics to produce an independent reader. The Teacher’s Manual provides easy-to-follow daily lesson plans that teach new skills and allows continuous review. Student worksheets reinforce phonics, spelling, and handwriting skills. By week 13 students are reading Bible stories in a special beginning level Bible Reader included with the curriculum.

ScienceLearn about nature, using three age-appropriate, engaging science books included with the curriculum.

MathThe Teacher’s Manual includes goals and activities for a hands-on approach to best develop foundational math principles with manipulatives and a supplementary math workbook to reinforce skills.

The first grade program is an ideal follow-up to the My Father’s World kindergarten program, but may be used by any student who is ready for first grade reading. If your child is not yet reading simple short vowel words, he may be more successful if he begins with our kindergarten program. See the next page for placement recommendations.

Overview

“The first grade program is hands on and easy to teach. It makes learning funfor both child and parent.” –H. C.

Meet the Author of My Father's WorldMarie Hazell is a speech and language specialist with a master’s degree and teaching credentials. After completing her degree, she taught in a special language kindergarten where her interest in teaching children and adapting to their various learning styles developed. She then taught kindergarten and first grade in a Christian school, which challenged her to develop a program that focused on both strong and weak learners, often at different levels. With her background in the educational system, and then becoming the mother of six children, she realized the importance of the family in the educational process. Combining her experience and knowledge, she developed a Bible-based program for both homeschools and classrooms. Writing from her deep desire to further God’s kingdom, she continues to develop curriculum that is a unique combination of her own observations, Charlotte Mason’s ideas, and classical education, providing an international focus and Biblical worldview.

Phonics-based reading instruction includes the Bible Reader with

over 50 stories

Adventures in U.S. History

“It is very thorough, yet gentle... an amazing

introduction to American historyfor this age group.” –Heather

Is My Child Ready for Adventures in U.S History?

A child should have a strong foundation in these skills to begin Adventures in U.S. History:• Can your child write or copy 1–2 sentences fairly easily and cheerfully? • If you were to read the story of David and Goliath to your child, would he be able to write

several simple sentences about the story? (Spelling and punctuation do not need to be correct.)• Have your child read a sample from our Bible Reader (www.mfwbooks.com/biblereader). Can

he read it fairly easily? Please note that needing to sound out words is common at this age.• If you are considering Adventures for an advanced six-year-old, is he prepared to spend 3–3½

hours each day doing school?

If you can answer yes to these questions, your child is probably ready for Adventures. However, if he is younger than six years old, older than eight years old, or studied U.S. history recently, please call our office for placement help.

If your child is not strong in the above areas, we recommend Learning God’s Story, our first grade curriculum (p. 14).

MODERN TIMES multi-age familylearning cycle

Integrates Bible, literature, science, music, ar t, and character

development with geographyand history

What is the Multi-Age Family Learning Cycle? My Father’s World’s unique INVESTIGATE Multi-age Family Learning Cycle is designed for children through 8th grade to be taught together using the same program. Bible, geography, history, literature, science, music appreciation, and art activities can be enjoyed by a range of ages. Our INVESTIGATE Teacher’s Manuals provide guidance for grade level expectations as needed. A 7th grader will complete assignments more thoroughly than a 3rd grader while using many of the same resources. The Multi-age Family Learning Cycle keeps the family together when possible and assures that the parent is only teaching one complete curriculum package each year. A family purchases only one INVESTIGATE package per year for all 2nd – 8th graders and adds grade level language arts and math for each child. All our recommendations for 2nd – 8th grades are designed to be completed together with INVESTIGATE curriculum packages in about four hours each day for all children in all grades. Each 7th and 8th grader will have an additional one to two hours of independent study in more advanced math and science.Five year-long programs are included in the INVESTIGATE cycle, beginning with a one-year foundation in geography and cultures, followed by four years of chronological history. A 2nd or 3rd grader will continue in the cycle for 6–7 years. So 7th and 8th graders repeat material previously learned in 2nd or 3rd grade at an advanced level.

Why Begin with Geography? We highly recommend that your family complete Year One, Exploring Countries and Cultures, before beginning the chronological study of history. This foundational study of countries, cultures, geographic terms, and God’s heart for all people makes the future study of history more understandable and retainable. Watch your interest in the history of the world come alive when you pray for specific people groups, prepare and eat authentic meals, and learn about cultures, geography, and ecosystems before you study history!Because this unique and focused study of geography and cultures is not repeated in high school, we strongly recommend all 2nd – 8th graders complete Exploring Countries and Cultures. A 5th – 8th grader new to our program may need to skip a year or more of the history programs in the INVESTIGATE cycle. History will be thoroughly taught again in the DECLARE high school years.

How Do I Teach K and 1st While Schooling Older Children?Kindergarten and first grade students, who are in the learning-to-read process, will still complete God’s Creation from A to Z and Learning God’s Story for their language arts and math. These DISCOVER programs are designed to be completed alongside INVESTIGATE curriculum packages when there are older siblings. Children in 2nd – 6th grades will complete 60–90 minutes of independent work each day. This provides the parent time to complete kindergarten or first grade with younger children. High schoolers complete most of their studies independently and have a scheduled meeting with the parent on Friday. Friday is a shortened day in the DISCOVER and INVESTIGATE years allowing time for everything to be accomplished!

Where Should I Start? (refer to the chart on the right)If You Have Children in Preschool – 3rd Grade:Start each child in the appropriate DISCOVER curriculum. Your 2nd or 3rd grader (with no older siblings in 4th – 8th grade) will use Adventures in U.S. History for one year and begin the Multi-age Family Learning Cycle the next year.If You Have Children in 4th – 8th Grade (and siblings in 2nd – 3rd grade):The INVESTIGATE Multi-age Family Learning Cycle begins with Exploring Countries and Cultures for all 2nd – 8th graders. Younger children will still use the appropriate preschool, kindergarten, or 1st grade program while enjoying some of their older siblings’ activities. Your family will advance through the Multi-age Family Learning Cycle each year. When younger children reach 2nd grade, they fully join their older siblings in the same cycle year the others are studying. Each child will continue through the Multi-age Family Learning Cycle until completing the 8th grade. If You Have Children in 9th – 12th Grade:Your student is ready for parent-guided independent work in our DECLARE curriculum for high schoolers.

MFW’s curriculum simplifies your teaching schedule and unifies family learning.

1850 to Modern Times InvestigateGOD’S CALL

1850 to Modern Times is the final year of a chronological history-based study for students in

2nd – 8th grade. Enjoy learning U.S. and world history as you solve cryptography puzzles, bake Vietnamese Apricot Coconut Cake, recite the Gettysburg Address, and sing catchy states and capitals songs. Read about Hudson Taylor, a pioneer missionary to China, and Sergeant York, a humble mountain man and Christian who became a great World War I hero.

1850 to Modern Times is a complete curriculum for history, Bible, and science. The Deluxe Package includes music and read-alouds. Your 2nd and 3rd graders will also need the 2nd – 3rd Grade Supplement for 1850 to Modern Times.

This program uses The Story of the World, Volume 4, as well as the corresponding Activity Book. Because the

content this year is more difficult, the activity book’s review questions are needed to reinforce learning. It includes maps and activities as well as assignments for outlines or summaries for each chapter to help students develop writing skills.

Teacher’s Manual• Daily lesson plans are in an easy-to-use weekly chart format that lists each subject with the

appropriate book titles and page numbers to complete each day. Many simple hands-on activities are included in the Teacher’s Manual to reinforce the study of history. We do the lesson planning for you so that you have more time to enjoy teaching!

Bible• Learn about basic Christian beliefs with stories from around the world that illustrate key Bible

passages by using A Young Person’s Guide to Knowing God by Patricia St. John.• Be inspired by the stories of faithful Christians from In God We Trust (p. 38), Trial and

Triumph (p. 34), and Tales of Persia.• Scheduled, guided prayer for the United States (or your country of residence) and other

countries around the world with varying beliefs and customs.• A six-week Bible study focusing on God’s faithfulness to mankind and the call for all believers

to be a blessing and a witness to others. • Sing the great hymns of our faith and learn their stories (coordinated with this year’s history

study) using Then Sings My Soul (optional).

History• Study world and U.S. history from 1850 to modern times with a number of informative books

and a detailed timeline book (all fully scheduled in the Teacher’s Manual).• Integrate history with composition and handwriting as you make a history notebook. Enjoy

cooking delicious recipes from the past.• Learn about U.S. presidents and U.S. geography with a brief trip through all 50 states,

completing a two-year study that began in Exploration to 1850.• Library books provide enrichment for topics that you study. We provide an extensive list of

recommended books for independent reading, but none are required. Learn more on page 58.• To add history content for 2nd and 3rd graders, you will need the 2nd – 3rd Grade Supplement

for 1850 to Modern Times.

Science• Study chemistry and physics with many hands-on experiments. The Deluxe Package includes

the Wired! electricity kit and a magnet kit.• 7th and 8th graders use Apologia science instead of the above (purchase separately; see p. 64).

Read-Alouds• Selected books are integrated with the study of history to inspire and develop godly character

(in the Deluxe Package). Learn more on page 58.

Art and Music• Enjoy hands-on projects related to history, science, and Bible.• Focus on U.S. patriotic songs and composers such as Foster, Sousa, Armstrong, and Gershwin.• Sing the great hymns of our faith and learn their stories (coordinated with this year’s history

study) using Then Sings My Soul (purchase separately; see p. 39).• Continue to develop a variety of art skills with lessons from God and the History of Art

(purchase separately; see p. 31).

Math, Language Arts, and Foreign Language• Add math (p. 62)• Add language arts (p. 58)• Foreign language is optional but highly recommended (p. 57).

Note for 2nd – 3rd Grade: The content of 1850 to Modern Times is difficult for 2nd and 3rd graders; many of the books are written at a higher comprehension level than in our other history programs. The history content is often troubling—describing wars and human cruelty—and not suitable for younger students. The author of The Story of the World does not recommend using Volume 4 with 3rd grade or younger, and we agree. However, 2nd and 3rd graders can still join you for Bible, science experiments, science readings (the easier sections), and president and state studies. (Your 2nd and 3rd graders will have an opportunity to repeat 1850 to Modern Times in 7th or 8th grade, when they will have the maturity needed to fully comprehend the complex information.)

2nd – 3rd Grade Supplement for 1850 to Modern Times (required for 2nd and 3rd graders)Fascinating literature books as well as two activity books help make history and U.S. geography come alive for younger students. You will find all of these books conveniently scheduled in your lesson plans. They are great books, and you won’t want to miss any of them! 79.78 59.55

Composition and Grammar in High School

In Year 1, Ancient History and Literature, composition focuses on the argumentative essay. The Ancient Literature Supplement with Grammar and Composition instructs students step-by-step how to write a strong five-paragraph argumentative essay. Five unique argumentative essays are written during the year to help students improve their skills. Detailed instruction explains how to write a thesis statement and format each of the five paragraphs. Grammar lessons related to this type of writing are included. These essays draw from what is being studied in Bible, English, and history to help students mature in their understanding and ownership of a Biblical worldview. One essay prompts the student to compare and contrast the gods’ motivations and relationships in Bulfinch’s Mythology to that of the Living God. As students think through and write this type of essay, they cannot help but grow in their understanding of their God. Students also create original psalms and complete less structured essays on history topics.

During Year 2, World History and Literature, a traditional research paper is written during the first ten weeks. This project includes research and bibliography note cards, footnotes, and a bibliography. The student also learns to write ten other types of compositions in response to literature read during the program. Writers INC provides instruction for the research paper and other assigned compositions, and serves as an excellent resource on language usage.

In Year 3, U.S. History to 1877, American literature is analyzed from a Biblical worldview using reading and writing assignments in the American Literature

Supplement. The Progeny Press study guide for The Scarlet Letter also includes assigned essays. In addition, grammar review is included using Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 11.

Year 4, US History 1877 to the Present, includes one semester of modern American literature and one semester of speech. Each classic novel read from this time period is analyzed using a novel review included with the lesson plans. A research paper is highly recommended.

Bible, History, and EnglishMy Father’s World’s comprehensive four-year curriculum integrates Bible, history, and English. Each year has detailed daily lesson plans and a complete book package.

• Ancient History and Literature (includes Old Testament)• World History and Literature (includes New Testament and Church History)• U.S. History to 1877 with Government, American Literature, and Biblical Worldview• U.S. History 1877 to the Present with Economics, English/Speech, and Bible

Our high school curriculum covers all needed language arts including writing instruction and assignments (composition), grammar, literature analysis, and reading lists. No supplementation is needed. However, an incoming student weak in formal grammar should complete Applications of Grammar (p. 61). Likewise, a student weak in composition skills should complete Writing Strands Level 4 (p. 60).

Math and Science We recommend high school level Apologia science (p. 64), Saxon math, and Jacobs Geometry (p. 63).

Foreign LanguageMy Father’s World has developed daily lesson plans for Rosetta Stone with helpful hints and additional activities to meet high school credit requirements (p. 57).

Other ElectivesIncluding health, personal finance, logic, drafting, and others (p. 56).

Why Ancient History and Literature in High School? While reviewing the sequence of the high school program, you may be asking, “Can my student skip Ancient History and Literature since it is not a state requirement for graduation?” Though not state-required, My Father’s World believes Ancient History and Literature is critical to a Biblical scope and sequence for high school. This program provides high school students with a solid foundation in Bible that includes reading the entire Old Testament. Integrating Old Testament readings with the study of ancient cultures and literature meets the greater goal of educating children with solid Christian beliefs, while achieving strong academic goals. Ancient History and Literature helps high school students embrace a strong Biblical worldview by developing analytical skills and spiritual maturity. Students will be faced with many thought-provoking life issues including, “Will I live for my pleasure, or will I live for God’s glory?” Ancient History and Literature is important for all high school students, even those who have recently studied this time period. Don’t miss this great opportunity to give your children more of God’s heart for His people and His creation while preparing them for college or a career.

Package

Ancient History and Literature is a one-year curriculum that integrates history, English, and Bible (3 full-year credits). Ancient History and Literature lesson plans are written to the

student for parent-guided independent work. On Fridays, the student and parent have a conference to discuss the week’s topics and review completed work. There are 36 weeks of lessons, five days a week, with a somewhat lighter schedule on most Fridays. Parents assign grades based on informal

discussions and daily written questions, vocabulary quizzes in the literature program, and essays for English and history. There are no formal tests for history, Bible, or literature. You will need to add science, math, and electives such as foreign language.

Bible and History• Read through the entire Old Testament, applying its truths to your life with insightful

questions from Taking the Old Testament Challenge. Parents, especially fathers, are encouraged to purchase their own copy of this book and complete the study to help in guiding a weekly discussion with their child, as well as for developing personal spiritual growth. Journey through the Bible adds in-depth information. Unwrapping the Pharaohs and The New Answers Book include archeological discoveries and apologetics related to the Bible and history being studied.

• Study history from Creation through the time of the Greeks. Assignments include reading with comprehension questions, map work, and in-depth information about Creation and early man. Students also create a detailed timeline book. The Old Testament readings are a central focus of the history lessons and are integrated chronologically with the other history studies.

• Participate in service projects chosen and/or developed by the student and the parent-teacher.

English• Develop composition skills with comprehensive lessons for writing essays (see p. 47). • Enjoy and analyze (from a Christian perspective) literature written during or about the

ancient period: the Bible, The Epic of Gilgamesh (condensed version), The Cat of Bubastes, Bulfinch’s Greek and Roman Mythology, The Iliad, and The Odyssey. Vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension and critical thinking questions included.

We love how you weave God’s Word into the lessons. The result has been many family discussions on living for God and not for ourselves.” –Beth

Language Arts

My Father’s World is a literature-rich curriculum that strives to provide the best choices for reading while keeping annual curriculum costs at a minimum. All required books are

included in the curriculum packages. In addition, an extensive list of highly recommended (yet optional) library books—organized by week, theme, and reading level—is included with each year of our curriculum. This list allows My Father’s World to provide excellent options for children of all reading levels. There are four types of reading in our programs for 2nd – 8th grades: read-alouds, thematic independent reading (Book Basket™), independent reading at grade level, and reading for comprehension.

Read-AloudsEach year of curriculum for 2nd – 8th grades provides a core set of books scheduled in our Teacher’s Manuals for Bible, history, and science. These books are read aloud together as a family. Reading time is followed by parent/teacher-led discussion, narration, and other activities designed for retention. Engaging literature for the entire family, including missionary biographies and other life-impacting classics, is also scheduled in our Teacher’s Manuals and included in the Deluxe Package.

Thematic Independent Reading (Book Basket™)Book Basket is designed to develop a love for reading using “living” books. Each of our Teacher’s Manuals recommends hundreds of colorful picture books, chapter books, fascinating biographies, videos, and DVDs related to the history, geography, music, and science being taught each week. Some of these books may be borrowed from the library and placed in a simple basket (or box) at home. Students are then able to choose those titles that most interest them, exposing them to a wide variety of literature, while enriching their learning experience. Children who love to read also love to learn.

Independent Reading at Grade LevelIndependent reading from chapter books is scheduled daily for 20–30 minutes. Books may be selected from a list of over 100 classic titles organized by grade level, the Book Basket recommendations, or other chapter books of your choosing.

Reading for ComprehensionCustomers choosing to follow My Father’s World’s recommendations for language arts complete activities by grade level that provide both written and oral comprehension activities in response to various reading assignments. These activities are found in Primary Language Lessons, Intermediate Language Lessons, and Progeny Press Study Guides.

Kindergarten – 1st GradeGod's Creation from A to Z and Learning God's Story Deluxe Packages cover all needed language arts; no supplementation is needed.

2nd – 8th GradeMany language arts skills are integrated into history, science, and Bible activities in our curriculum:

• Narration, copywork, dictation, and memorization• Informal handwriting practice• Read-aloud literature in Deluxe Packages• Book Basket™ - extensive library lists for read-alouds and readers• Vocabulary (Exploring Countries and Cultures, Creation to the Greeks, and Rome to the

Reformation)• Letter writing (Exploring Countries and Cultures)• Composition in science and/or history• And more!!

You will need to add grade-specific resources as a supplement to assure a well-rounded, complete language arts program. We recommend:

2nd Grade Primary Language Lessons (first half of the book) and Spelling by Sound and Structure

3rd Grade Primary Language Lessons (last half of the book), Spelling Power, and Modern Style Cursive Connections

4th Grade Intermediate Language Lessons (first third of the book), Writing Strands Level 3, and Spelling Power

5th Grade Intermediate Language Lessons (middle third of the book), Writing Strands Level 4 (see note below), and Spelling Power

6th Grade Intermediate Language Lessons (last third of the book), Writing Strands Level 5 (first half of the book; see note below), and Spelling Power

Students who are academically strong may use All-in-One English Series in 6th grade and Applications of Grammar in 7th grade.

8th Grade two literature guides from Progeny Press, Applications of Grammar, Writing Strands Level 6 (see note below), and Spelling Power (if needed)

NOTE: Writing Strands levels in the above chart are for students who begin Writing Strands in 4th grade. Your 5th – 7th graders who are new to Writing Strands begin at Level 3 and complete one level each year. Any 8th graders new to Writing Strands begin at and complete only Level 4.

See page 60 for 2nd – 8th grade items. For more information, see page 61.

9th – 12th GradeOur high school curriculum covers all needed language arts including writing instruction and assignments (composition), grammar, literature analysis, and reading lists. No supplementation is needed. However, an incoming student weak in formal grammar should complete Applications of Grammar (p. 61). Likewise, a student weak in composition skills should complete Writing Strands Level 4 (p. 60).

Language Arts

Why Does My Father’s World Recommend Primary LanguageLessons (PLL), Intermediate Language Lessons (ILL), Spelling Power, and Writing Strands?

1. When you combine the above books with the practical language arts skills already in My Father’s World curriculum, the coverage of language arts is very thorough. This combination follows a Charlotte Mason approach better than any other program we know.

2. The moral content is excellent. PLL and ILL are reprints of public school books from the early 1900s. ILL even begins with a story about Moses.

3. The programs are very efficient and quick to teach. They teach skills without “fluff” and “extras” that really aren’t needed. Spelling Power takes 15 minutes, scheduled four times per week. PLL takes about 15 minutes and is only taught three times per week.

4. They are very flexible. You can adjust lessons to your child’s needs or a particular day’s responsibilities. If a child has already focused on writing earlier that day, you can often give the PLL or ILL lesson orally. This can really speed up the lesson.

5. They are cost-effective. These books may be reused with any number of children. PLL is only $10.95 for two full years! Spelling Power is a one-time purchase to teach spelling to all of your children for as many years as it is needed.

6. Minimal parent preparation time is needed. Writing Strands provides specific, step-by-step instructions; parents simply open the book and read it to the student. In addition, Writing Strands is recommended because students are guided through complete compositions, not just sentences or isolated paragraphs. The amount of weekly work is very reasonable. It is written for the individual student, not a classroom. It doesn’t assume or rely on knowledge of parts of speech—which we believe should be taught at a later age.

7. This gentle approach is less stressful for children and parents. We are concerned that so much energy goes into language arts that children are worn out for the day, before you even get to the “good stuff” in homeschool.

When is it best to teach parts of speech?Respected homeschool expert Ruth Beechick advises parents to wait until junior high to teach parts of speech. Students don’t need to diagram sentences or formally learn about prepositions, adverbs, etc., when they are young. Why teach the same concepts year after year at the elementary level? These concepts are learned more easily at an older age when students are able to think more abstractly. Parts of speech are taught informally in PLL and ILL, and you may not even realize it. In the last year of ILL (6th grade), when children are old enough to retain it more easily, parts of speech are covered more directly. Older children understand abstract concepts more easily than 3rd and 4th graders.

We have found that 7th grade is an ideal time to begin formally teaching parts of speech in a thorough manner. For 7th graders, All-in-One English Series is an excellent, simple-to-use, first-year course that teaches the eight parts of speech and reviews capitalization and punctuation. For 8th graders, Applications of Grammar thoroughly covers parts of speech, diagramming, and more.

Math

Overview 7th – 12th Grade

Kindergarten – 1st GradeGod's Creation from A to Z Deluxe Package and Learning God's Story cover all needed math; no supplementation is needed.

2nd – 6th GradeSingapore Math® was developed in the country of Singapore. Students in Singapore are distinguished among their international counterparts for receiving high marks in math. Singapore’s Primary Mathematics U.S. Edition includes additional information for teaching math relative to American culture (U.S. currency, pounds, ounces, inches, etc.).

Singapore Math’s primary strength is a strong mental math component (unlike many U.S. programs). Logical, unique strategies are taught that help students truly understand mathematical concepts. Students are then able to solve problems mentally without always relying on paper and pencil.

Creative problem solving is encouraged as students are taught several methods to solve the same problem. We also appreciate the manageable number of workbook problems that students are expected to solve on a daily basis. Its effective parent- and student-friendly format makes this a program we highly recommend.

7th – 12th GradeWe recommend Saxon Math with one year of Jacobs Geometry. Our complete math packages include the tools you need for older students to work more independently.

• Daily Lesson Plans developed by My Father’s World assign specific problems each day.• DIVE CDs used with your computer teach each lesson in the Saxon textbooks.• Solutions Manuals (highly recommended) show each problem worked out step-by-step.

Sequence of CoursesA 7th grader who has completed Singapore level 5B should begin Saxon Math at level 8/7. All other 7th – 12th graders new to Saxon Math should take the Saxon Placement Test (available free on our website) and begin where placed. (Any 7th or 8th graders who test below 8/7 may call our office for recommendations.) Students who complete Saxon 8/7 with test scores consistently at 80% or higher may skip Algebra ½ and go directly into Algebra 1.

After completing Saxon Algebra 1, students are strongly encouraged to study a year of geometry using Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding by Harold Jacobs (not published by Saxon) before continuing in the Saxon Math sequence with Algebra 2, Advanced Math, and possibly Calculus.

MFW Encourages Every Family to Join HSLDA!

My Father’s World has always appreciated the efforts of the Home School Legal Defense Association to preserve and advance the educational freedom we have as homeschoolers. HSLDA works on behalf of homeschoolers to protect our ongoing freedom to home educate by monitoring laws introduced by state and federal legislators and defending our rights in court when litigation is necessary. Their staff writes letters on our behalf when school administrators or government agencies try to unlawfully limit our homeschooling activities. For all of this we are eternally grateful. A great debt is owed to HSLDA for the freedom all of us enjoy.

What Makes My Father’s World Unique?• Combines the best of Charlotte Mason’s ideas and classical education with a Biblical

worldview, an international focus, and our own observations of how children learn.• Recognizes the Bible, God’s truth, to be the foundation of wisdom and education.• Utilizes hands-on unit studies with daily lesson plans that are easy to teach.• Enables families and schools to teach children of multiple ages and grades together. • Uses a comprehensive, sequenced learning program beginning with preschool learning toys

to develop readiness skills. Our complete unit-based curriculum includes a phonics-based learning-to-read program focusing on God’s amazing creation (kindergarten), the world of the Bible (first grade), and U.S. history (second or third grade). Then a year of geography sets the foundation for chronological world and U.S. history (through eighth grade). Our high school curriculum provides a Biblical framework forEnglish, history, and other subjects.

• Provides easy-to-teach, integrated curriculum that is enjoyable, academically strong, and focused on character development.

• Is committed to the Lord of All, who tenderly searches for people from every tribe and language. A portion of our profits helps support mission work overseas, especially Bible translation projects. Our heart’s desire is that someday soon all people would be able to read of God’slove in their own language.
