HOMEGATEIPv6 Issues
IETF76November 2009
Overview
• Lack of widespread availability of IPv6-capable home gateways impacts IPv6 service enablement
• Specifications to facilitate development generally have been lacking– Situation is improving
• Most deployed gateways today are likely not able to support IPv6– There are some signs of next generation gateways
that support IPv6– What to do about legacy gateways, if anything?
Specifications
• v6ops DRAFT outlining IPv6 CPE requirements is progressing– draft-ietf-v6ops-ipv6-cpe-router-02
• Phased approach at defining IPv6 requirements– Represents requirements across different types of
providers– Phase I is underway; Phase II is forthcoming
Objectives• Goal is to ensure that IPv6 CPE requirements are
comprehensive– Provide additional feedback to v6ops as needed
• Potential HOMEGATE areas of work:– Best practices– ISP/network deployment considerations and models– Home network deployment considerations and
models– Dual-stack operation recommendations– Security recommendations– DNS and DHCPv6 considerations
Next step
• Produce documents as part of HOMEGATE• Identify areas of work for other working
groups– v6ops informational and or BCPs documents
