A year to celebrate:Homefield boys have had another fantastic year of experiences and opportunities. In sport our boys reached the last round of the National Rugby Finals yet again. It was so pleasing to note that our young Under 8 team remained undefeated in competition this year – what a promising future for them! More widely, whether it be chess, karate, judo, cricket, or squash… it is so good to see such varied competition and enjoyment for all of the boys. In fact our chess players excelled themselves when the Under 9 team came second in the National Chess Finals.

In music did you know that more than 80% of our boys now take up a specialist musical instrument? Whether it’s at local or national competition level, or for our own concerts and performances, music remains such a vital part of our school.

In academics we’ve really tried to push ahead to enthuse the boys with competition. With some old favourites like the Townsend Warner History Prize we improved on previous performances and received a special commendation this year. New opportunities got the boys really excited and with the ‘Mangahigh’ online maths competition we were actually the UK winners by a very significant margin! Elsewhere events such as national French Speaking, Religious Studies or Geography competitions were also very successful. We want our boys to do their best and achieve highly and this year was no exception. Our hard working Year 8 boys realised another stellar set of results at Common Entrance with 48% scoring A* or A grades and 74% scoring A*-B grades. For those taking scholarship papers 47% scored A* or A and 92% scored A*-B. Hats off chaps!

In the community we also ensured boys experienced both civic service and leadership responsibilities, be it performing for the old folks at the Royal Star & Garter retirement home, manning the Sutton Food Bank or helping clear London parklands, they took a commendable hands-on approach to their duties.

St. Paul’sCathedralAs part of their study of Christianity Year 6 visited St. Paul’s Cathedral, with its world-famous dome, stepping inside to experience the Cathedral’s awe-inspiring interior. They uncovered fascinating stories about its history and the worship that takes place there.

Boys had the unique experience of lying down to reflect on the intricate detail of the three saucer-domes of the Quire ceiling which depict the biblical idea of creation.


Year 5Year 5 created shoebox sized ecosystems and biomes in Geography.

Holocaust AssemblyAs part of their Religious Studies Common Entrance Ethics course Year 8 reflected on the 2017 Holocaust Memorial Day theme of ‘How can life go on?’ They created an assembly around Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece that was stolen by the Nazis. The whole school brought in a picture of an item they cherished creating a very special ‘Remembrance Board’ of our own.

Wimbledon Synagogue

As part of the ‘World Religion’ section of their Religious Studies Common Entrance course Year 7 visited the Wimbledon Synagogue and the Jewish Museum. Boys had a hands-on experience with religious artefacts and spoke to specialist curators during the day, deepening their understanding of this world faith.

Best memory: A lesson in Science when we had an ethical debate really sticks in my mind because the very next week at my entrance interview for Whitgift they asked me my views on exactly the same subject. I was able to give a confident answer because I had spent the time the previous week talking it through and working out my own opinion.

Best school trip: The residential trip to Wales because we had an amazing instructor who helped us work on our teamwork skills.

Best memory: When we were up in the mountains on the Outward Bounds trip and the instructor said “Don’t fall down”… it was like a chain reaction as one person fell and then everyone else followed suit! It wasn’t funny at the time but became so later.

Best memory: An English lesson with Mr Brett stays in my mind. We were having a vocabulary test and we came to the word ‘narcissistic’. Mr Brett explained the definition by sauntering over to his reflection in the window and saying “I’m so handsome” while adding gel to his hair – we all got to join in and will always remember the meaning of ‘narcissistic’!

Best school trip: The Pompeii trip because Mr McCaffery made sure the timetable was packed with expeditions from Vesuvius to the Colosseum.

Message to the school: Only when you have the will to succeed will you do so.

Best memory: When I led my team scrambling up a mountain on the Outward Bounds trip. It was really foggy and it wasn’t even possible to see 10 metres in front of your face!

Best school trip: The Outward Bounds trip because it was fun pushing myself and doing independent activities.

Best memory: When I first joined the school in Reception I remember loving the area with the building toys and playing there on the equipment for the entire day.

Best school trip: The trip to Hever Castle because of the water maze – if you put a foot wrong the water sprayed you in the face!

Best memory: When we were camping on the mountains it was really funny dealing with toileting outside!

Best school trip: The theatre trip to watch the play Antigone by Sophocles. I enjoyed studying the play beforehand and seeing it performed live.

Message to the school: I would like to share my Dad’s motto which is ‘work hard and enjoy it’.

Next school: Academic scholarship to Hampton School

Best memory: When we went to Hever Castle and got wet in the maze. I remember having to lie in the sun to dry out before I was allowed back on the coach!

Best school trip: It is difficult to decide but it would definitely be either the Outward Bounds trip to Wales or Maison Claire Fontaine in France because both were residential and I loved staying overnight with school friends.

Message to the school: Work hard because it will pay off.
