The district final will be held at Homebush Public School on Thursday, 27th June. These students will be working hard over the next four weeks to enhance their prepared speeches and training to deliver successful impromptu speeches. World Environment Day June 5th World Environment Day is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. “Air Pollution”, the theme for World Environment Day 2019, is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time. We can't stop breathing, but we can do something about the quality of air that we breathe. We encourage you to build awareness of this vitally important message at home http://worldenvironmentday.global/ Wet Weather Parents are reminded that students are not to bring umbrellas to school in wet weather. Students are to wear/bring a rain jacket. Umbrellas are a hazard on slippery, wet stairs, and when students walk.

Parking at School Parents are cautioned about the following safety issues regarding parking around our school. We appreciate it is difficult to find parking around school, however parents are reminded to;

1. Join the Walking School Bus

2. Drop students off further away and let them walk

3. Park further away and walk

4. Drop your child in the Kiss and Ride Zone.

5. Delay picking up your child by 5-10mins when parking is less congested.

Please be aware;

The local council ranger and highway patrol are fining parents who break road rules. A classic example is a U-turn on our surrounding streets, another is double parking.

It is not okay to park in the driveways of our neighbouring apartment blocks. This is offensive to our neighbours who require anytime access and creates hazards for pedestrians and other vehicles.

Be patient. Build 10-15mins into pick up times. There is no deadline worth putting anyone’s safety at risk. It is an enjoyable way to bring people together to raise funds that will make a big difference to those impacted by cancer. We invite parents to join us at this event, held on Wednesday 12 June at 11am in the Chapel. Money raised will go to the Cancer Council’s life-saving research, prevention, support programs, and information. We hope to see you there. Uniform Shop News

We are excited to announce the arrival of our new HWPS Music Bag. They will be available to purchase for $15 from the Uniform shop in the coming weeks. They come with HWPS logo and are made of excellent quality.

We are encouraging all students in Stage 2 and Stage 3 to purchase a music bag to keep their sheet music and recorders protected. This will be a mandatory requirement in 2020.

The Uniform Shop is looking for an additional volunteer to support with the running of the uniform shop and sales. Please contact the school office to express your interest in volunteering.

Peer Support, Keeping Friends Types of friends is the focus in Peer Support this week. Children will explore what encourages them to form friendships with different people including common interests and admirable qualities. Through various activities children will identify that their friends can fall into the categories of “best friends”, “friends” and “people we know”. Children will also discuss the fact that friendships can change over time for various reasons. Discuss with your child the different friends they have in their lives and how friendships may change. Some friends may be more important at different times in their lives.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Serviceman and Servicewomen Commemoration Service On Friday the 31st of May, our school leaders went to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Serviceman and Servicewomen Commemoration Service held at Hyde Park. This Service marked the 13th Annual NSW ceremony commemorating the service and sacrifice of Indigenous Veterans. A smoking ceremony commenced the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Servicemen and Servicewomen Commemorative Service. This was followed up with an incredible welcoming dance performed by a High School group. The Royal Air Force came in with a march and after this a Psalm was read from the Bible. Margaret Beazley (the Governor of NSW) carried out a commemorative address and read a famous poem called the ‘Coloured Digger’. As the ceremony continued there was a key address from Australian Navy CPO, Tina Elliott (Murri). The wreath laying was a fun and exciting experience for two of our leaders (Yuuki and Ridhwan). After the wreaths were laid at the front of the memorial, The Ode of Remembrance was recited. This was followed up by a special version of the Australian National Anthem which included a verse written in a traditional Aboriginal language. This was followed by the last post, one minute of silence and the reveille. The leaders had an amazing day reflecting on the sacrifice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during the time of War. They also had an opportunity to see significant buildings and views of our city. School Representatives Yuuki, Ridhwan, Layla, Yaliniyan, Suhaan, Pravin, Nameera and Sandeep.

Zone Cross Country Stars On Wednesday the 29th May, 32 students made their way to Henley Park to complete against the best in the Western Suburbs Zone area. The blustery conditions were not conducive for running personal best times but the energy was clearly evident amongst all runners. After walk through the cross country track, the junior competitors kicked off proceedings with blistering pace. It was great to see so much support from the school community with Mrs Ellis, Mr and Mrs Cooney, Mrs Hiwatashi, Mr Langi, Mrs Seino, and Mrs Jaseetharan all cheering Homebush West entrants. Congratulations to all 32 competitors who represented the school with great pride and passion for running. Jerra was able to place 5th in his age event, and qualified for the regional cross country carnival. We wish him the best of luck! Mr Fung and Mr Johnston

Every year schools across New South Wales are invited to participate in Operation Art – an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, in association with the New South Wales Department of Education. The Operation Art program provides a forum for schools and students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. On Monday 20th May 2019 (Week 4), Homebush West celebrated and appreciated the artistic efforts of all students in our annual Homebush West Art Exhibition. The annual Homebush West Art Exhibition provides students with an authentic learning experience, whereby students exhibit a completed artwork and participate in a ‘gallery walk’ through K-6 learning spaces. Congratulations Homebush West for creating such colourful, vibrant and meaningful artworks! Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to represent HWPS in the 2019 Operation Art Competition. These students will have their artworks exhibited at the Armoury Gallery in Sydney Olympic Park in September. Well done! Thank you to Ms Pene, and the team for our participation possible.

PSSA Reports Senior Girls Soccer Ms Pashley Junior Girls Soccer Ms Pene Senior Boys Soccer Ms Smith Junior Boys Soccer Mr Penman Senior Mixed Netball – Ms Tuazon Junior Netball – Ms Joseph Senior Girls Soccer The sun shone bright upon our now familiar Centenary Field as we stepped up to play against Newington Public School! From the very first touch Homebush West was significantly dominant in possession! Antonina tore up the field with her speed and determination on the ball! Amani ran her absolute heart out, playing all over the field and delivering quality passes to her team mates - Alisha and Miray who all came so, so close! Homebush West were unstoppable but we needed to get one in the net! Just before half time, Koharu made a superb run through the middle passing it to Melanie (our super sub from juniors today) who played a nice one two back to Koharu to put her through the gap! The Newington keeper made an incredible save keeping the score at nil all at half time. After a quick and positive half time chat, the girls were back on! Victoria, Selina, Lillian and Claire held our back line with such confidence! Some of our kicks went so far! It was amazing how our back line switched us from defence to attack instantly! During the second half, Koharu was looking very dangerous near the goal when unfortunately for Newington, a defender made a hand ball in the box. Koharu made short work of this by slotting one past the keeper as cool as a cucumber! Our team really shone bright today and should all be incredibly proud of themselves! The game continued with so many near goals we just couldn’t believe it! This game was truly a positive display of our progress as individuals and as a team! Another win to add to the belt! Here we go Homebush West! Ms Pashley Senior Boys Soccer Last Friday the Senior Boys played against Enfield. In previous years Enfield have proven to be a tough opponent and this year they lived up to their reputation. We started well and almost scored off the kickoff. The game settled into some rhythm and Enfield began to attack down the wings and peppering crosses into the goal box. Eventually the raids began to reap dividends and the half ended 4-nil. The second half played out in a similar fashion with our team seeing few chances to score. Although we kept our spirits up and manufactured some great highlights like Zac making a great save and Krish, Ian, Juan and August all making saves in one attack alone, we succumbed to a 9-nil score line. Once again we played with determination and sportsmanship in a proud effort. Mr Smith Junior Boys Soccer On the 31th of May at Henley Park Homebush West squared up against Enfield. The team had a phenomenal game, their attacking and defending was on point. Krish had our first attempt on goal and sadly hit the goal post. The team kept the momentum and approached the rest of the game with their head held high. Unfortunately the results weren’t in our favour however a 1-0 loss is nothing to take for granted. The team have been improving every game and I feel like a win is on its way! Keep up the effort. Our training was focussed on attacking and defending in their positions during a game. The students are becoming more of a team and learning to communicate effectively with each other during training and on the field. Mr Penman

Junior Girls Soccer

On the last day of Autumn, the Junior Girls Soccer Team played against Newington PS in a close, thrilling match! Although we lost, walking away with a final score of 0-2 (Junior As) and 1-0 (Junior Bs), the girls played extremely well and continue to show great improvement and progress each week. The students bring so much passion and determination each week and never give up or lose hope! Thank you team for your consistent effort - keep it up! Our hard work pays off! A few highlights from today’s game include: Junior As

Sudharshana’s speedy run up the field, taking hold of the ball and heading straight for the goal with only one opposite in sight - amazing!

Faith’s fierce nature, protecting our goal like a penguin protecting its egg - fantastic!

Ally’s strong defence and confidence, not being afraid to ‘get in there’ and tackle the opposition - well done!

Junior Bs

Akshika’s strong defence and confidence, tackling the opposition and not letting them get past with the ball - outstanding!

Chloe’s fierce kicks down the field, with great force and accuracy - too good!

Melissa’s energy and enthusiasm on the field, although a sub for first half, she came on the field strong and ready to win!

Overall, the team did so well today! Although we didn’t win, we know we are getting better each week and we will continue to give it our all and keep our eyes on the prize! Ms Pene and the Junior Girls Soccer Team Senior and Junior Mixed Netball There is no report as both teams had a Bye last Friday. Ms Joseph and Ms Tuazon

The safety and wellbeing of our children is paramount. As parents and carers we can’t always be with our children to advise and protect them.

When out and about, children can be confronted with situations where good decision-making is vital. With this in mind, advising our children with appropriate responses to certain situations will help them avoid trouble and danger.

Here are some simple tips to give your children for when they are out and about.

Protect your child walking home

■ ALWAYS identify safe places on the way home from school.

■ DO NOT stop and talk to people you don’t know. Go straight home or to your intended destination.

■ ALWAYS find a safe place if you feel frightened. These include schools, shops, churches or police/fire/ambulance stations and tell them that you are frightened.

■ NEVER get into a car with someone you don’t know.

Protect your child on public transport

■ NEVER travel in isolated areas. Find crowded carriages, guard’s compartment (marked with a blue light) or at the front of the bus.

■ ALWAYS try to travel in groups of friends if possible.

Protect your child when in public spaces

■ ALWAYS carry a contact number for your parents. (On a card attached to your clothing, written on your arms or in your phone).

■ DO NOT walk away from family or friends without telling them where you are going, when you’ll be back and who you are with.

■ ALWAYS walk away from fights or arguments, unpleasant or aggressive behaviour and take your friends with you.

■ REMEMBER, always tell your parents, carer or teacher if something has happened.

Peer Support, Keeping Friends

Zone Cross Country Stars

School Swim Caps for Sale

Operation Art 2019

Aki Kau (KW), Eric Yang (2/1K), Bianca Yu (4/3S) and Viktoria Volytskyy (6/5C)
