Student Welfare is paramount in
all teacher’s minds. Somemes we
hear the term Student Welfare
and we think that something has
gone wrong. This week Mrs
Nurdin introduced a posive be-
haviour system. This will reward
the vast majority of our students
who do the right thing all the
me. More informaon on the
new part of our welfare system is
printed on another page in this
newsle"er. All students were told
about the rules and rewards at
assemblies this week. Please dis-
cuss them with your child.
Athlecs Carnival will be held to-
morrow at the Olympic Park
Warm Up track. Parents are wel-
come to join us for the day. It is
important that all children a"end
and parcipate in this event. Dur-
ing this year it is a great me to
for children to experience what
they are seeing on TV during the
Olympics and recognise the effort
that is required to be successful.
Thank you
Mr Brian Lambert
A lot of students and parents or-
dered the special lunch from the
canteen. We are lucky to have
such healthy and tasty food avail-
able for the students. Don’t forget
a lunch special goes home every
week.
UNSW English Test was conduct-
ed this week and a great effort
was made by many teachers to
facilitate the si/ng of the exam. It
is important we recognise these
efforts and I thank the teachers
who were here at 7 am to be
ready for the students at 7.30.
Details for the third and final test
will be coming home shortly.
Principal’s Report
What a great start to term 3. Stu-
dents are learning, having fun and
trying their best on all occasions,
while showing an altruisc a/-
tude towards their schooling life.
Last week was ‘Educaon Week’
and here, at Homebush Public
School, we showcased some fan-
tasc events. The ‘Science Fair’
was enjoyed by all the students
with a young fellow in Kindergar-
ten stang “This is the best day
ever!” This is a credit to all the
students in years 5 and 6 who
have worked really hard to put
together their experiments and
presentaons. Well Done!
Many parents came up to school
and enjoyed the day with their
children. One parent commented
to me “I think I have learnt a lot
today as well.” It was great to
have so many parents and friends
in the school enjoying the oppor-
tunity to learn and have fun with
their children.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
The end of the Premier’s Reading
Challenge is fast approaching. All par-
cipang students in Kindergarten,
Year One and Year Two have been
reading the books in class and will
have their entries validated shortly.
Students who are parcipang in
Years Three, Four, Five and Six must
have their online reading logs com-
pleted by next Monday 13 August so
that their entries can be validated.
Those students who have returned
their parcipaon note and complet-
ed the challenge will receive their
cerficates in Term Four.

This semester Homebush Public School will be iniang a new student welfare program. The program incorpo-
rates a revised Homebush Public School rules and values system.
The school rules follow three main areas of social development. These rules are:
Be Safe, Be RespecDul and Honest, Be a Considerate, Responsible Learner.
There will be new posters explaining these rules around the school and in classrooms.
Teachers will implement lessons based on the school rules and the school cizen values of: Be Safe, Be Responsi-
ble, Be Considerate, Be Honest and Be RespecDul. Teachers will unpack, explain and model to students HPS rules
and values system during class sessions. We will have special weeks with a theme surrounding the values and
rules. The first being “Be Safe” (week 4)
Posive behaviour will be rewarded by the following: Class Merit cerficates, Silver awards and Gold awards
and Assistant Principal award for outstanding cizenship. Merit cerficates and AP awards will be given out
weekly at assembly. Once a term, a special assembly will be held for the recipients of the silver awards.
In summary, if a student has no negave comments in our Welfare Sentral Record system, they can achieve a
silver award in term 3 and in term 4 2012. If students earn two silver awards by the end of 2012, they will re-
ceive a Gold award which will be presented at a special assembly towards the end of term 4. Should a student
have a welfare entry they will not receive a silver award for that term.

Children who won’t
take no for an answer
You know the type of child who keeps
asking for a favour or a treat unl they
get the response they want?
These kids generally use one of two
strategies. They may either nag or
hound you unl they get an affirmave
or they will seek out an adult who will
give them the answer they want.
The first method, which is based on
persistence, is generally very effecve
to use with red parents and sole par-
ents who are more suscepble to this
type of behaviour.
“All right have the treat. Anything for
some peace and quiet” is a response
that most people who have spent me
around
children are familiar with.
The second method is a li"le more de-
vious but very effecve and usually
occurs in dual parent families. You
know the situaon. A child’s request
for a treat, favour or oung is turned
down for good reason “No Jessica you
can’t have an ice cream now. Wait un-
l aMer dinner” but the child goes to
the other parent who may well give
them the affirmave they are seeking.
Minor happening but very irritang.
These situaons are indicave of two
people who are operang on different
parenng planes. If it happens every
now and again then it is no big deal.
However, if one parent is always
granng a child his or her wishes with-
out consultaon or thought of how the
other parent thinks then it is probably
me to step back and reflect on how
you can both work together. If it hap-
pens frequently your children will learn
how to play one parent off against the
other or manipulate situaons unl
they get what they
want.
It sounds sinister
but it is not. It is
just how we hu-
man beings tend
to think and be-
have.
behave. This type of parental ma-
nipulaon can occur for many rea-
sons. Either it is due to different
standards of behaviour or
thoughts about bringing up chil-
dren or a lack of understanding
about what has happened in a
child’s day.
Regardless of the reason it means
that parents need to communicate
and also get the message across to
children that it is taboo to keep
seeking out a parent unl they get
the response they want.
Parents should be firm with a child
who goes to another parent in
search of a yes aMer they have re-
ceived a knock back from another.
The other technique that you can
use is to defer to the other parent
whenever children catch you una-
wares with a request.
“Okay, I’ll just check with dad and
I’ll get back to you” is the type of
response parents may need to use.
This strategy can be a li"le wear-
ing and even arficial but it
demonstrates that you are a dou-
ble act.
Vitamins for Parents
Don’t tell them more than once!
Somemes we ask children to help
or give them advice but we get
li"le response. The natural reac-
on is to repeat ourselves as if say-
ing it one more me reinforces our
message.
If you repeat yourself just to un-
derline your message there is a
good chance that parent deafness
will become permanent or they
will do the opposite of what you
want, just to annoy you. Rather
than repeang yourself get in the
habit of acng. For example, ra-
ther than remind children a num-
ber of mes to come to the dinner
table just serve the meal aMer in-
forming them the meal is on the
table.
2012 BOOK WEEK/ LITERACY WEEK
The annual book week parade will be held in the school assembly hall at 2.00pm on Wednesday 22 August. The
parade will involve children in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two. The children need to wear a costume to
school dressed up as their favourite book character. They do not need to wear their school uniform on this day
as it is recommended that they wear the book costume all day as part of this occasion.
Another feature of Book Week at our school this year is an invitaon to parents to have literacy me with their
children in class before lunch on Wednesday 22 August. Parents are invited to join their child for literacy acvi-
es in the classrooms at 12.15pm. This will be followed by a picnic lunch with your child at 12.45pm. The book
character parade will then commence at 2.00pm in the school hall.
The book fair, which is being held in the library from Monday 20 August unl Thursday 23 August, will open from
8.30 am to 9.00 am. Please come along to buy a book to donate to the library. We are looking for volunteers to
help sell the books at the book fair. If you can help on any day during Book Week please fill in the form below
and return to the Front Office as soon as possible.
