Welcome to UTC Bolton, I feel privileged to be leading such a forward-thinking and innovative college, and I hope that you will be as excited as I am about the opportunities that we offer young people.

UTC Bolton exists to meet an urgent need for STEM skills in the North West region. Together with our sponsors, University of Bolton, we provide the combined academic and technical education to equip local young people to take on highly skilled roles in health sciences and technology engineering.

Our aim is to prepare students to meet the demand for highly skilled STEM careers in either Health Science or the tech sector. We will do this by ensuring that every student maximises their academic potential and experiences a range of STEM enrichment activities.

The students of UTC Bolton are the next generation of health scientists, practitioners, technologists and engineers. I look forward to sharing the journey and watching them secure highly skilled careers.

UTC Bolton is an aspirational place to learn. We raise aspirations by providing hi-tech facilities, quality teaching and links with higher education and local employers. Our day starts with Activate – a programme of study including mindfulness, growth mindset, critical thinking and research skills, to prepare students to breakthrough their education and aspirational goals.

BREAKTHROUGH

Our students are the next generation of health scientists, practitioners, computer scientists and engineers. Our curriculum is designed to innovate, explore, discover and break through traditional boundaries and expectations. We embrace STEM project-based learning. Our students acquire skills, knowledge and experiences that enable them to secure their aspirational career goals.

CULTIVATE UTC Bolton is sponsored by the University of Bolton and works in partnership with local employers to provide industry-standard experiences for our students. Students plan their industry experiences to support their career goals, choosing from a STEM themed enrichment programme, industry visits, specialist workshops and internships, to ensure that they have a portfolio of evidence to support their university and apprentice applications.

Located within the University of Bolton campus, UTC Bolton has an outstanding £10 million facility for 14-19 year olds which includes specialist laboratories for Optometry, Clinical Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Consulting, Medical Simulation, Robotics, Electronics and 3D Printing. Our facilities uniquely inspire and motivate our students to succeed in their studies and propel their careers forward.

The UTC Bolton day begins at 8:30am with Activate, a learning activation programme taught in form groups to prepare students for learning. The Activate programme includes mindfulness, developing a growth mindset and the necessary skills to excel in our STEM based project learning, including critical thinking and research skills.

Our students are supported in their learning and personal development by a team of teaching and support staff. Every student has personalised learning goals and are encouraged to breakthrough their goals with independent study and enquiry.

The UTC Bolton offers a wide and varied enrichment programme on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, extending the school day until 5pm. The enrichment programme helps students to develop the softer employability programme skills that employers value alongside academic qualifications.

Breakthrough - Project Based Learning

Breakthrough provides a gateway for students to develop a range of work-based skills and professional competencies within the health sciences and engineering technology sectors by instilling the sense of inquiry and discovery intrinsic to all scientific, engineering and healthcare innovations.

Each project has thematic scenario set in the context of either the science, engineering and the health sector. The scenarios are used to develop sector based skill competencies. Students develop professional skills at the same time, which has a significant impact on students’ confidence, motivation, self-respect and academic achievement.

For example, through the theme of ‘Cardiology’, health science students learn how to carry out A-Z patient assessments, conduct physiological measurements, including ECG traces, and use Early Warning Scores to determine the level of patient care required, while working alongside a cardiologist from the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

We aim to teach STEM skills with a creative and innovative programme of project based learning. Our curriculum is designed to support students in their chosen career pathways with a broad range of subjects in health sciences, technical engineering and complimentary careers.

Years 10 and 11

The Year 10 and 11 curriculum provides students with an excellent foundation in STEM based subjects. The key emphasis is to ensure all students achieve their potential within the core aspects of STEM and national curriculum subjects, including English and Maths. At this stage in their education, it is important that students continue to explore a broad range of subjects so that they can make an informed decision about which career path they want to choose in Sixth Form. Therefore, students study all GCSE core subjects and can choose three additional options subjects.

UTC Bolton Sixth Form

Sixth Form is a distinct moment in time within which students can harness their infinite potential and find a pathway in the world. As well as this, personally and socially during these next two years students experience great personal growth.

When applying to become a student at UTC Bolton Sixth Form we support students to select a pathway that supports their career ambitions. Our Curriculum Pathway matrix (Page 12-13), is an excellent starting point for your research.

Competition for university places and apprenticeship vacancies is fierce. Students need to demonstrate their independence in learning and skill development and a passion for their career, alongside their academic qualifications.

Our students have access to a careers platform careers software that provides students with clear, comprehensive and impartial information that’s always relevant to them. Connected to live labour market information and course data, ‘Start’, allows users to create a personal profile which generates suitable jobs, qualifications and new destinations to explore.

Our location within the University of Bolton campus gives students access to enviable resources and academic skills. Students also have access to both Bolton One (sports facilities) and the University of Bolton Library Services.

In addition, we access support from higher education institutions and programmes to support UCAS submissions. For example, our aspiring medics participated in the Medicus programme to improve their applications.

We are building connections with local employers operating in the health sciences and engineering sectors. Our aspiration is to collaborate with local employers to deliver Breakthrough specialist workshops, support project based learning and provide internships so that our students will develop a portfolio of experience that puts them first in the queue for a university place or apprenticeship vacancy.

Step 2 Register for a Taster Day and an Activate Meeting with a member of our Leadership Team.

Step 3 Attend your Activate Meeting.

Step 4 You will receive either an unconditional or conditional offer from our admission team.

Step 5 You and your parents must formally accept your offer

Step 6 Continue to attend Taster Days.

Step 7 Attend Enrolment in July (Years 9 & 10) or August (Year 12).

Step 8 Attend September Induction Days.

Step 9 You are now a UTC Bolton Student.
