13:30 POLICY SESSION 2: THE SOCIAL CHALLENGES FACED BY AGRICULTURE

In addition to agriculture’s primary function, namely to make its full contribution to the production of food and fibre, various policy documents of government also emphasize the importance of agriculture’s contribution to sustainable employment and to improve living conditions of farmworker communities. The congress will receive elucidation on the related policy dispensation, as well as the nature and extent of the required contributions to meet the stated developmental objectives.

15:15 POLICY SESSION 3: LAND REFORM AND FARMER DEVELOPMENT

The need for land reform is widely accepted. It is a challenge to implement land reform in such a way that it contributes to a sustainable dispensation from an economic, a social as well as a natural resources perspective. In this regard, fairness to all parties is an important prerequisite. Considerations such as the capacity to manage transformation successfully, partnership relationships, the implications for job creation and the unlocking of opportunities within the food value chain, are also important.

Santam upbeat about sustainable farmingEffective risk management (in the form of adequate crop and asset insurance) is vital – and this is where Santam Agriculture is making a real difference to help farmers and producers create a sustainable future.

For this reason Santam Agriculture endeavours to make insurance even more accessible, affordable and attractive to farmers and producers.

While Santam Agriculture undertakes to illustrate the fundamentals of insurance to farmers and producers, they also want to give them real solutions and sound advice, relevant to their specific circumstances. Insurance is often seen as a grudge purchase – Santam Agriculture’s challenge is to make it more practical. It’s all about knowing clients and deciding what will work best for them and their specific circumstances.

Santam Agriculture want farmers and producers to know that they understand their businesses, which they value their contribution to the economy and sustainable food production, and above all that they share their passion for farming.

Santam Agriculture’s research farm, Mooihoek (near Bloemfontein), is a good example of how Santam Agriculture can add value for farmers and producers. The scientific research done at Mooihoek gives farmers and producers invaluable information about the potential damage to crops at various growth stages. Santam Agriculture is still the only South African insurer to date with such a research facility.

Land BankThe Land Bank is a development finance institution whose mandate is to support, promote and facilitate the development of the agricultural sector. The Land Bank is the sole shareholder of the LBIC, which provides insurance products to farmers. As a key delivery agency of government in the agricultural sector, the bank plays a strategic role in implementing measures to reduce rural poverty, strengthen economic performance and drive development in the agricultural sector.

SanlamSanlam and agriculture have a long history together. Over the past nine decades the company has supported farmers by its involvement in various agricultural initiatives, while the Sanlam Group offers the farmer tailor-made financial solutions via Cobalt Solutions for Business Owners, the company’s portfolio of financial services for self-employed people.

Together with Landbouweekblad, Sanlam will be presenting the eight annual Sanlam/Landbouweekblad “Women Entrepreneurs in Agriculture” competition this year, honouring the entrepreneurial spirit of women who owns and manages businesses on agricultural land or in rural areas.

Senwes positioning itself for a new eraIn agriculture, change is essential and inevitable. An exciting new season has come for all role players in the local and international agricultural industry that is focused on creating food security on a sustainable basis.

Agricultural businesses are currently braving two extremes. On the one hand the food value chain, where active consolidation on primary production level is taking place at a rapid rate, and on the other hand a strong component of international competitiveness is becoming a reality, with multi-national role players positioning themselves globally, which includes South Africa. The consumer also requires a shorter, simpler and cheaper supply chain and wants to participate in deliberations regarding the end product. Indications are that the value chain will be shortened and that the current specialisation model is becoming obsolete.

In reaction to the above, Senwes is in the process of positioning itself strategically within the milieu of more extensive integration between the producer and the end consumer, together with an unavoidable more extensive participation in the grain value chain.

I would like to express the hope that Agri SA, through your 2012 congress, will shed new light on the value chain as well as the role of agriculture therein.

Kind regards

Francois Strydom

AGRI SA’S BUSINESS PARTNERS WITH WHOM THERE IS A SPECIFIC AGREEMENT

Agri SA acknowledges business partners who make a contribution on various levels of the organisation:

Absa AgriBusiness, CrisisOnCall, Nissan SA, T&E FinOps, Vodacom and Sanlam.

Absa Agribusiness - Your Partner in AgricultureThe agricultural sector serves as one of the cornerstones of the South Africa economy. Although its direct economic contribution amounts to only about 2,5%, the significant role of the agricultural sector becomes more prominent when one considers that around 32% of the economy is influenced by the sector by virtue of its linkage effects in other sectors within the economy. This is even bigger if the retail food sector is taken into account.

Agriculture not only plays an important role in terms of its economic contribution but also provides more than a million formal and informal job opportunities. Through its export industries, the sector is an important source of international trade and generator of foreign currency. With regard to international trade, South Africa is one of the top seven countries that export agricultural products. These are major achievements, especially if one considers the sector’s seasonality, generally dry production environment and exposure to unfavourable climatic conditions.

Absa is committed to the agricultural sector and has, since the turn of the previous century, been a strategic and financial partner of this sector of the South African economy. Its commitment is driven by a holistic approach that will ensure long-term sustainability and optimum profitability. Absa Corporate and Business Bank, with the support of our Commodity Specialists, have been meeting the needs of our farming clients for many years.

Our commodity specialists focus on financial planning and offer a wide variety of products and services that will meet unique farming needs.

Our specialist services include the following:

- Risk analysis and strategic planning;- Feasibility studies;- Cash flow planning and profit management;- Analysis of financial needs;- AgriBusiness seminars; and - Short-term financing.

Absa’s financial product range is designed to meet all the financing needs of the agricultural producer. The product range include the following:

Transaction products, including electronic banking services, cellphone banking services and credit and debit card pay ments.

Credit products, including short-term overdraft facilities for production credit, term loans for purchasing land, asset purchases and international banking services.

Investment products such as fixed deposits, term deposits and securities.

Specialised farm products aimed at financing agricultural commodities and the marketing chain.

Insurance products including crop insurance, life insurance, short-term insurance and employee benefits.

Financial planning which includes financial and estate planning, income tax and estate tax services, retirement planning, long-term assets, trust services, wills and portfolio management.

You don’t have to be a farmer to be part of the agricultural sector. In fact, you could head up an extremely successful co-operative or business which forms an integral part of the agricultural supply chain. Whether your core business

focuses on the processing or packaging of primary farm products or you supply inputs to the sector, Absa can help you with secondary agribusiness expansion.

Contact your Business banker at the nearest branch or call Absa AgriBusiness on (011) 350 6854 for further information or assistance.

Nissan SANissan SA would like to make use of this opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to promote rural security by means of a contribution to the Agri Securitas Trust Fund.

This commitment of Nissan SA to the support of the Trust Fund has been ongoing for a period of twelve years whereby Nissan SA makes a contribution of R1 000.00 to the Trust Fund for every Nissan vehicle purchased by a member of the farming or agricultural community. The usual method of using a Fleet Code, F14911 to qualify for a discount when a vehicle is purchased from a dealer is still in operation.

Contributions to the Trust Fund is applied, as an example, to provide a counselling service to the farming community, the operation of an information service in the Free State which has led to great success in prevention of farm attacks, providing communication systems to the farming community for crisis communication in the implementation of security strategies and so on.

It comes as no surprise, therefore, that Nissan SA has such a strong affiliation with the farming sector. This motor manu-facturer has a history of 70 years in this market with the most comprehensive range of commercial vehicles currently on the market. The range comprises from the NP 200 half tonner which replaces the 1400 bakkie, the reliable range of one tonner Hardbody to the Navara double cab and Kingcab models and the ultimate work horse vehicle, the Patrol pickup.

During the congress, some of the above mentioned vehicles will be on display and we welcome you to come and have a closer look..

VodacomVodacom an African mobile communications company and Agri SA a federation of agricultural organisations, recently announced a partnership agreement for a satelite based communication solution for Agri SA’s members and the wider rural community. This agreement follows a resolution abopted by Agri SA’s congress in 2011 whereby Agri SA was instructed to investigate alternative telecommunication systems for rural users.

“Vodacom is well aware of the fact that rural areas of South Africa are under-serviced with regard to connectivity. This has presented real challenges to not only the farming community, but to their customers, service suppliers and rural communities in general. Agriculture is a critical sector for development, employment and the economy of the country and they need leading-edge technology to market and grow their businesses. Partnering with Agri SA will bring Vodacom’s Satellite based voice and data solutions to the rural community including their members.
