I miss you when something really good happens because youre the one I want to share it with.

I miss you when something is troubling me because youre the only one who understands me so well.

I miss you when I laugh and cry because youre the one who makes my laughter grow and my tears disappear.

I miss you all the time but I miss you most when I lie awake at night.

And I think of all the wonderful times we spent with each other for those were some of the best memorable times of my life.

Challenges facing farmers today and tomorrow Though farming was once big business in the United States, by 2012 less than 1 percent of Americans were professional farmers. Many challenges face todays farmers, many of which are largely unknown to the general public. Many people have an ou tdated view of a farm as a small, family-owned and operated parcel of land where livestock is raised in open pens and crops are hand-harvested when ripe. The reality is that modern-day farms have had to overhaul operations to meet demand and remain competitively priced while adapting to the ever -changing ways technology infiltrates all parts of life. Each of these factors present obstacles for todays farmers.

Technology Rural farming communities are expected to make an effort to integrate modern technology into an indu stry that has been around for centuries. But such a transition in rural areas, where communications systems may not be as up-to-date as those in urban areas, is not always so easy. According to the Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council, a shift from a resource-based to an information-based economy, compounded by the rapid introduction and expansion of new technology in the workplace, has altered farm operation and the skills in demand. Older workers who have been schooled in one way of agriculture may have a significant impact on labor supply and the vitality of farming as a career. Younger adults who are knowledgeable in technology may no longer seek out agricultural careers.

Decrease in farming as an occupation The United States Environmental Protection Agency says that only about 960,000 Americans claim farming as their principal occupation. As that figure has dwindled, the average age of farmers continues to rise, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that roughly 40 percent of the farmers in

this country are 55 years old or older. This continued on next page

has led to concerns about the long-term health of family farms throughout the United States. Environmental concerns Many farmers have come under scrutiny for how farming impacts the environment. A growing emphasis on sustainability and conservation has led many people to protest certain farming practices. Protesters claim that certain practices, such as r aising livestock, can pollute water, while the use of fertilizers and chemical pesticides is bad for the environment. Many farmers, however, have altered their methods to be more environmentally

friendly and self-sustainable in the process. Climate change is another environmental issue farmers must deal with. Strong storms and severe droughts have made farming even more challenging.

Financial fall-out The ongoing recession of the last half-decade has also affected farmers. In November of 2012, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that the unemployment rate within the agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting industries was at 13.6 percent, far higher than the nati onal unemployment rate. As a result, many farm families have found themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place, as rising costs for equipment and technology are being coupled with decreasing profits and rising unemployment.

Further complicating matters is competition from corporations and international food producers who have made it difficult for family farmers to turn a significant profit. Many family farmers rely on loans and lines of credit to survive, but thanks to changes in the financial sector that saw banks become less willing to extend lines of credit, some

farmers are facing bankruptcy. Though it can be easy for those who do not work in the agricultural industry to overlook the struggles facing todays agricultural professionals, a greater understanding of those struggles and the challenges that lay ahead can benefit the industry and its employees down the road. TF132913

Greater public awareness of agricultural challenges could help the industry in the future.

Clearing rocks from fields made easy One of the biggest obstacles to the production of field crops in many areas of the world has always been rocky terrain: wide swaths of land where stones seem to grow better than any other crop. Even today, farmers are constantly fighting this problem, which can be very demoralizing because it s such heavy work. In the past, the farmer and his or her helpers often the family s children, a great source of cheap labor had to clear rocks from fields by hand, without any mechanical help other than a horse and cart. Picking rocks was a thankless job, one that the grandparents of today might even remember doing as children. These days, farms and fields have grown. In colder climates, winter frost continues to heave the land and spew up rocks every year, even on fields that have been cultivated for a hundred years. Fortunately, there is now a wide range of equipment and machines to do this horrible job. The increasingly sophisticated (and above all, tireless) machines include wind rowers, rock rakes, hydraulic or mechanical rotary rock pickers, rock buckets adaptable to tractors, rock crushers, and skid steer rakes. These machines are available in different widths and have one-pass variable working widths. Many farmers now use a wider rotary rock picker in order to pick up rocks in a larger area in one pass. There is even a piece of equipment with two rotary rakes measuring 4.5 meters each, extending the working area to 9 meters in one pass. Now that is a real labor-saving device!

Fallow land used for biofuels Countries around the world are searching for ways to reduce their dependence on petroleum products. For many of them, economic development could be achieved through the use of fallow land for the production of biofuels. Ecologists believe that unpr oductive fallowland constitutes an enormous economic

waste. In their view, choosing to leave such land fallow is essentially a lack of long-term vision, especially because dedicating fallow land to the production of plants with energy potential in no wa y curtails the production of other crops on any given territory. Subsidizing biofuel manufacturing pla nts should be secondary to supporting the production of agricultural biomass, whether from fodder or forestry products. Let s take a look at Brazil, for example. During the last century, many rural people moved away from the countryside, abandoning their farms to swell the ranks of city dwellers. Today, the revitalization of the Brazilian countryside has seen Christmas tree plantations springing up like mushrooms. Once the demand for Christmas trees has stabilized, the cultivation of energy rich plants

should take over, limiting the need for new plantations. One example of an energy rich plant is canary grass, one of 16 plants that have been identified as having good potential as a biofuel source.

Questioning the merits of organic agriculture The discussion around organic agriculture continues with a recent study showing that organic food is neither more nutritional nor less polluting than traditional agriculture. Here are the conclusions of two studies that attack current beliefs re garding organic agriculture. One study from l Institut pour l environnement de l Union europenne, published in the Journal of Environmental Management, is a synthesis of 71 Europea n studies. The good news they rustle up in favor of organic produce is that energy consumption per kil ogram of food is not as high as in traditional agriculture. According to this study, pollution per kilogram of food would be higher for organic agr iculture although it would be less per acre. However, as this farming method isnt as productive, traditional agriculture is less polluting in th e long run. The other study in question was conducted by the University of Stanford, in California, and published by the magazine Annals of Internal Medicine .According to the Stanford study, an amalgamation of several studies conducted in the United States, if the proportion of fruit and ve getables containing pesticide residues higher than government norms is taken into account, there is no difference between organic and traditional methods. The fact remains that for people who are uncomfortable trusting government regulations concerning pesticide use in agriculture, organic produce is still a valid choice. In organic meat production, the Stanford study shows that organic pork and chicken have 30 percent less bacteria with antibiotic multi-resistance than in traditional farming. These antibiotics are dangerous if meat is undercooked.

Last years drought shows up on grocery bills Last summers record-breaking droughts hit it home: the agricultural landscape is changing like we h avent seen in our lifetimes. The North American Drought Monitor, a collaborative think tank within the U.S.s National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, tagged many unlikely Northern zones as abnormally dry in 2012. The problem was especially severe in the U.S., where drought hur t crops and incited farmers to cull animal herds because of the high cost of feed. What does that mean for the average Joe and Betty? Higher prices a t the grocery store in 2013 and beyond. The CIBC s chief economist, Avery Shenfeld, says that this years food prices will rise by three to four percen t. As the harvest season concluded last fall, production forecasts for soybeans, corn, eggs, milk, and pork came in low, with the added speculation that beef production will drop this year as well as feed costs begin to catch up with producers. While domestic food prices creep up, particularly hard hit will be devel oping countries that depend on stable world food prices. Research scientists writing in the August 13, 2012 New York Times Sunday Review affirm that climate model projections show extreme weather conditions are here to stay, and that most of them are the result of our consumption of carbon-based fuels. If that is the case, every familys effort to modify their consumer habits by buying locally produced food and goods will help in the long run. As will making the switch to shared transportation or non-carbon fuels. It is a drop in the bucket, but as food prices rise we will all want to keep those drops dripping st eadily.

Now is not the time to become complacent especially concerning growing your market share. For many, the first reaction is to cut, cut, cut and advertising is one of the first things to go. However, experts caution that companies who slash advertising during a downturn, leave empty space in consumers minds for aggressive marketers to make strong inroads and gain market share. Todays economy provides an unusual opportunity to differentiate your business and stand out from the crowd.
