"Improving the human condition" in action

Our program’s mission “To cultivate graduates of ability and conviction to provide patient-centered care guided by respect for the infinite worth of individuals…” is more than just a statement, it has become an action. Our students have embraced our mission and two of our inaugural class of 2016, as they near the conclusion of their training, provide shining examples of our program’s mission and vision.

Brianna Hawks

While on a flight from Indianapolis to Denver in August 2015, a passenger abruptly rose from his seat during the flight and appeared to be having some difficulties moving down the aisle. As he neared the lavatory area, he fell to the floor. Noticing the entire incident, Ms. Hawks went back to the flight attendant, the passenger’s wife, and the passenger to offer assistance as a health professional in training - pharmacy student. By questioning the passenger and his wife, Ms. Hawks concluded that he was probably experiencing a hypoglycemic event.

The flight attendant brought back the emergency kit and Ms. Hawks asked requested a cup of orange juice for the passenger. To confirm her thoughts, Ms. Hawks searched the emergency kit for a blood glucose meter or any other related items that could be used to confirm a blood sugar imbalance. However, none of these items were in the kit.

Within a short amount of time, the passenger began to recover from the incident and confirmed her suspicion of low blood sugar. The flight crew asked her to sit with the passenger for the remainder of the flight, which gave Ms. Hawks time to educate the passenger and his wife about low blood sugar and encourage him to see his physician.

Not only did Ms. Hawks help a fellow passenger, her actions have also led to the airline reviewing the need to add diabetic related supplies in their emergency kit to assist in future situations.

Danny Bartoli

Mr. Bartoli is a pharmacy intern at the CVS Pharmacy in Columbia City. As reported in the Columbia City Post & Mail newspaper by reporter Nicole Minier, Mr. Bartoli’s actions on one given day helped save a woman’s life.

One particular evening in November, a gentleman approached the pharmacy counter to inquire about a cold medicine recommendation for his 75 year old mother. Although a busy night in the pharmacy, Mr. Bartoli asked the gentleman a number of questions and was able to check his mother’s pharmacy record as well. Based on the information that he collected, Mr. Bartoli refused to recommend any cold medicine product and actually instructed him to get his mother to a physician immediately. Even with a bit more pleading by the gentleman to appease his mother’s request, Mr. Bartoli reinforced the importance of having his mother see a physician as soon as possible.

The gentleman followed Mr. Bartoli’s advice and took his mother to a near-by after-hours clinic for evaluation. The clinic sent her directly to a hospital emergency room where they discovered that she had a pulmonary embolism – a life-threatening condition.

In both cases, these two students drew upon their training to calmly and confidently assess the situation, ask the right questions, and provide advice and care to the individual in need. Congratulations to Ms. Hawks and Mr. Bartoli for being wonderful examples of Manchester University Pharmacy Program students: improving the human condition through service.

Manchester Pharmacy Career

Fair & Interview Day - September 25

The program’s inaugural Pharmacy Career Fair and Interview Day was held Friday, September 25 . The event was designed to introduce our student body to local, regional and national employers. While the primary focus of the event was to feature our P4 class to potential employers and residency programs, all four classes had the chance to participate in:

the exposition - featuring over 10 potential employers and residency programs where they set up displays and provided information about the opportunities they have for jobs, residencies, and internships; ANDemployer interviews - specific interview times where interested P4 students had a chance to speak directly with potential employers regarding pharmacist positions, as well as P1 - P3 students interview slots for internship opportunities.

During the exposition, the University's Office of Career and Professional Development on the North Manchester campus coordinated a professional photo booth to provide electronic head shots for students.

In addition, this day featured specific programming for the P4 class, since this day is the only day the entire class will be on campus together until graduation week. The programming featured:

APPE review and updates - Office of Experiential EducationSelf-study overview and update - Dr. Tommy Smith, Assistant Dean for Assessment and Accreditation

Contract and benefit evaluation and negotiation - Debra Allen, Health and Wellness Market Director, Walmart

Financial management post pharmacy school - Dustin Mendenhall, Wealth Advisor/Financial Planning Specialist, Legacy Practice Management

Manchester students host Regional

Pharmacy Student meeting in

Dearborn, MI

Over 425 students descended upon host city Dearborn, Michigan for the 2015 APhA-ASP Region 4 Midyear Regional Meeting October 30 - November 1. Manchester University served as this year's meeting host, led by P4 student Nikhil Patel who served in the role of Midyear Regional Meeting Coordinator. Region 4 is represented by over 23 pharmacy programs in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.

The meeting was a great success! There were excellent programs and plenty of opportunities to network with other ASP chapters, as well as bond with classmates. Some highlights from the meeting:

Manchester had 55 students attend this year – a new record! Dean Rospond participated in the opening general session of the meeting as one of the keynote presenters - sharing with the audience her thoughts about the general theme of MRMs this year - Discover, Share, Live Your Why - as well as Region 4's theme of Become a Pharmacy Hero.Manchester earned the Most Spirited Chapter Award after finishing in first place after 10 chapter challenges. For a second consecutive year, one of our students has been elected as one of three regional officers for the next year; Morgan Land, P2, will serve as the Regional Member-at-Large for 2015-2016.

Congratulations to our APhA-ASP chapter and all those who helped our chapter achieve so many recognition's this year! Great job all!!!

2015 Fall Day of Service

From our start in 2012, service has been an area of distinctiveness for the pharmacy program. Service has been defined as:

a progression requirement for all students (minimum of 2 3-hour events per semester;self-reflections for each event placed in student portfolio;one poster presentation annually about one service event; andsemester day of service (one day each semester completed dedicated to celebrating the service accomplished that semester).

With the beginning of this academic year, service continues to be an area of distinctiveness for the program. However, the program will be readdressing service and a variety of other co-curricular components as we prepare for the 2016 ACPE accreditation standards and through our new strategic plan - strategic priority 4 focuses on advancing the health and well-being of our community through service.

This fall, the following changes have begun related to the program's service component:

service opportunities related to healthcare have increased (examples are increased health fairs and immunizations clinics);creation of health related service requirements for second year introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPE); andcontinued changes to the day of service activities.

Immunization clinic opportunities significantly increased this academic year. Working with Walgreens, SuperShot and Lutheran Hospital, over 50 flu shot clinics featured Manchester student involvement this fall. The program has also established connections with other potential immunization partners, such as CVS, for future flu shot clinics. With the changes in the IPPE2 requirements, additional service offerings have been identified within area safety net clinics such as Matthew 25 and Neighborhood Health Clinic.

This fall's day of service event featured over 60 posters and identified 35 different organizations. In addition, changes that were introduced to the day's event included:

formal faculty review of student posters;development of mini-educational sessions (4 30 minute sessions) that were created for those not presenting posters and featured topics such as mission trips, specialty patient camps, philanthropy and patient clinic involvement.

As the newly updated vision statement of the program describes, "to improve the human condition through service." Service will always be a distinction of our program and updates will continue.

P3 Nichelle Logan is preparing to administer a flu vaccine.

Formation of the Pharmacy Student Leadership Council

(PSLC)

With a critical mass of pharmacy student professional organizations being formed within the program, Fall 2015 witnessed the establishment of the Pharmacy Student Leadership Council (PSLC). This council was created to serve as our program's student government, serving as a liaison for the exchange of ideas and information among the program's students, organizations, faculty and administration. In addition, the council will serve as coordinator and organizer of various program activities and events throughout the year.

The council consists of two councilors from each of the four classes, as well as one councilor each of the nine student organizations that currently exist within the pharmacy program. This fall, the PSLC elected an executive committee, ratified the council by-laws and mapped out plans for spring semester. The council will begin holding regular monthly meetings once classes resume in spring.

Full Accreditation Self-study and site

visit approach - March 14-16, 2016

During early fall 2015 Dr. W. Thomas Smith, assistant dean for assessment and accreditation, assigned standards that were relevant to the team leaders of the 6 standing committees for review and edits. Next a steering committee was formed. The committee was charged with bringing comments and edits to the 6 team leaders.

Many town halls were held to allow students, faculty and staff to ask questions and provide feedback. The completed document was sent to an editor in November. Revisions were made in December with expectations of the final document being sent to ACPE at the end of January 2016.

The full site visit is scheduled for March 14-16, 2016. Any questions can be directed to Dr. Smith.
