As winter approaches, homeowners know they must do certain things to ready their homes for the coming months. Wrapping up the grill and closing the pool are no-brainers, but homeowners also must prioritize win-terizing their homes to ensure homes withstand the winter.Winterizing tasks range from small to big, but each can protect a home and its inhabitants and some can even save homeowners a substantial amount of money. The following are four simple ways to win-terize your home.

1. Plug leaksLeaky windows and door-ways can cost homeown-ers money year-round, al-lowing cold air to escape on hot summer afternoons and letting cold air in on brisk winter nights. When such leaks aren’t fixed, homeowners are more liable to turn up their air conditioners or heaters, unneces-sarily padding their energy bills along the way. Before winter arrives, check areas around windows and door frames for leaks, as well as any additional openings, such as chimneys, that may allow cold air in. Use caulk or weather strips to plug these leaks, and enjoy your warmer home and lower energy bills as winter weath-er gets colder and colder.

2. Inspect your chimneyIf your home has a chimney, chances are you have not used it since last winter. During that time, the chimney has likely accumulated some dirt and grime, and may even have served as home to some uninvited critters. As the season for fireside chats approaches, have your chimney serviced by a professional so it’s ready for use and you are not greeted by some unwanted guests upon lighting your first fire.

3. Clear the yardAutumn days, particularly late autumn days, can be gusty, and strong winds can cause branches to fall off

trees. Branches big and small can cause damage to cars, siding and roofs, and smaller branches can get clogged in gutters, potentially causing gutters to back up and leading to leaky roofs that damage a home’s interior. Take a walk around your property at least once per

week during the fall, clear-ing any fallen limbs and trimming branches that appear one strong gust away from falling off of trees. Remove any branch-es that are hanging over your home and driveway so they don’t pose a threat to your house or vehicles.

4. Turn off outdoor water suppliesWhen temperatures get especially low, pipes with water still in them can freeze and burst, poten-

tially leading to significant water damage. When you no longer need to water the lawn and when tempera-tures get too cold to wash your car in the driveway, be sure to shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and sprinkler systems. Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip.There are many ways to winterize a home, and home-owners should take every precaution necessary to en-sure their homes are safe and warm as the cold weath-er season approaches.

You Can Manage the Construction of Your Own HomeFriday, October 9, 2pm; Saturday, October 10, 2pm;

Sunday, October 11, 2pmJoin Paul Hamre, UBuild-It Spokane’s owner/super-star, as he in-structs you on the ins and outs of managing your home con-struction. It’s easy to sit back

and let your contractor take the reins, but why not ensure that your home is built to your needs? Originally from North Dakota, Paul is a third generation contractor and knows all about con-struction in the Inland Northwest. Let Paul help you get your home construction under control. He’ll be available to answer any questions you may have. For more information, call 509-326-0544 or visit www.ubuildit.com

Eco Friendly Home DesignFriday, October 9, 3pm; Saturday, October 10, 3pm;

Sunday, October 11, 3pmAre you thinking about designing your own home, but you want to keep your plans green? Let Glen Hyman and Great House Designs guide you in the

right direction. Glen’s seminar delves into de-signing for solar gain, insulated concrete forms (ICFs), 2x6 or 8 construction, SIPS panels and other things that you can do that may cost a little more at the time of construction. However, you will gain that investment back, making the ini-tial cost and effort worth it. Plus, Mother Earth will thank you too! Glen will also go over longev-ity, maintenance, overall flow and comfort. Glen won’t only cover these areas, but he will open the seminar up for any questions or comments you may have. For more in-formation, call 509-276-5426 or visit www.great-housedesign.com

Asbestos In Your HomeFriday, October 9, 5pmAsbestos can be danger-ous. Asbestos is a natu-ral mineral widely used in building construc-tion, including your home. Left undisturbed and in good condition, these products can per-form as intended. Prob-lems arise when they deteriorate, fall apart or are disturbed during demolition or renovation work. With so many health problems associated with asbestos exposure, it’s important to know every-thing about the building materials in your home. Let Margee Chambers with the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency inform you of everything you need to know about this hazardous material. For more information, call 509-477-4727 or visit www.spokanecleanair.org

Turning Spoils to Soil: Home CompostingSaturday, October 10, 4pm; Sunday, October 11, 1pmComposting is an economical and convenient al-ternative to bagging yard debris for disposal or hauling it to transfer stations. Composting, a form of “natural” recycling, takes ordinary green and brown yard waste and transforms it into a supe-rior soil amendment that improves the health of plants. Composting also helps reduce the amount

of trash in your home. So much of what we con-sume can be re-cycled. Compost enhances water absorption and is an attractive mulch that pro-motes weed and erosion con-trol. In Spokane County, there are several different ways to make sure your clean green material is composted. Kris Major with Spokane Regional Solid Waste Systems will be going over compost-ing for homeowners. For more information, call 509-625-6580 or visit www.solidwaste.orgMain Stage DemonstrationsFriday-Sunday, Various TimesThroughout the weekend, there will be multiple home demonstrations on the main stage. Few home improvements can transform a home more than the installation of new siding. Replacing siding can be a costly venture, but the right siding will main-tain its appeal for years to come.Updated siding can improve home’s energy value by enabling owners to save on heating and cooling costs. A new design and color also can improve a home’s property value and set it apart from neighboring prop-erties. According to the Professional Builder’s Home Exteriors Survey, exterior design and materials used are a top priority for new home buyers.Project costs depend on the size of the home as well as which siding material homeowners choose. Consider-ing new siding is a major renovation, it pays to get the job done right.Choose a qualified contractorIt is important for consumers to do their research when

it comes to siding materials and contractors. A con-tractor who takes shortcuts or improperly installs the siding may void a manufacturer’s warranty. Always ask family members and friends for recommenda-tions before choosing a contractor, and check out each prospective contractor’s work for yourself. Interview more than one contractor and compare both their costs and what they offer. Ask plenty of questions of the contractors, and avoid those who try hard-sell meth-ods. Questionable contractors may try strategies like a promise of a considerable discount if you “act now” or scare tactics that your home is unsafe in its present condition.Be sure the contractor carries general liability insur-ance as well as workers’ compensation insurance for their subcontractors. Ask for a license number as well and verify its accuracy. Select a durable material

Siding comes in all types of materials - from wood to plastic to fiber cement - but vinyl is among the most popular due to cost and availability. Research how well particular brands of siding stand up to conditions and which are the least likely to crack, warp or discolor. Find this information from online reviews or through consumer advocacy groups. Also remember, vinyl and other synthetic materials have improved and can now mimic the look of many other materials for a fraction of the cost.Calculate how much you needBefore you price out siding with contractors, estimate how much you will need for your house. Consumer Reports suggests multiplying the height times the width of each rectangular section of your house in feet, going by what you can measure from the ground, to determine their areas. Multiply the approximate height and width of gables and other triangular sur-faces and divide each total by two. Then add all the totals. To allow for waste, don’t subtract for doors, windows or other areas that won’t be covered. Finally, divide the total square footage by 100 to estimate how many squares of siding you will need. A square repre-sents 100 square feet. Knowing how much you need can save you money.Vinyl siding can completely transform the look of a home and make it more energy efficient. Consumers who do their homework will get the best value for their investments.

According to the Work Safe Center, power tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room vis-its in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping safe is of the utmost priority when using power tools. Here’s how:• Read all manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines

before use.• Keep tools clean and in proper operating condition.• Use the right tool for the job.• Always wear eye protection, such as safety glasses

or goggles.• Wear standard cotton or leather work gloves to pro-

tect hands.• Consider the use of earplugs or earmuffs with loud

power tools.

• Don’t use power tools in proximity to flammable vapors, dust or construction materials.

• Always check that wires are kept away from blades.• Maintain a tight grip on a tool.• Do not overreach when using tools, and maintain

balance.• Pay attention when working with any power tool.• Only use attachments specifically recommended

for the power tools and ensure proper installation.• Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime

when tools are not in use.• Routinely inspect tools for damage.• Keep tools stored in secure locations when not in

use.
