First draft, then training camp, and from there a new roster of Petes are born at the beginning of every season. In the mixture of returning players and those who were drafted in the OHL priority selection, there are the anomalies: the walk-ons. These players are invited to camp to assess their off and on-ice skill and are expected to compete with those who were previously chosen by maroon and white scouting team and executives. Among these Petes rarities is alumnus Jack Hardill (’97-’99).

Tonight’s game is the fifth of seven meetings between these East Division rivals. The Petes had their first win against the Bulldogs this season less than two weeks ago when rookie netminder Tye Austin recorded his first OHL win.

In the same game, Max Grondin recorded his first OHL hat trick which makes him Peterborough’s leading scorer against the Bulldogs, having played two less games against Hamilton than most of his teammates this season. For the ‘Dogs, Arthur Kaliyev leads the way with 2 goals and 7 assists in 4 games.

Although he’s not in the top ten of OHL defencemen points leaders, Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Nicolas Mattinen is third in d-men goal scoring with 9 goals in 28 games. He leads rearguards in shorthanded markers (2) and shots (108).

The Petes have won their last two Teddy Bear Toss games. Throw your teddies, toques, mitts, and more when the maroon and white score their first goal tonight! If you forget something to toss when we hit the net, Roger stuffed dolls are on sale in The Petes Store for $10, and select Petes toques are on sale for $14.95.

good experience, especially as a walk-on. When I made the team, they had a few open spots because they had a lot of guys graduate from the year before. It gave me an opportunity to get out there and make a mark in training camp and from there, develop my role and continue to play,” explained Jack.

Hardill was a forward for two seasons with the maroon and white, playing alongside Petes staples like Kurtis Foster, Jason Williams, Scott Barney and Matt Carkner. While playing for the patch Jack earned the Donnie Marsh Award as the Petes’ most dedicated player.

The forward went on to describe his reconnection with former teammates at events like the alumni homecoming, “It’s been 20 years since I’ve been back with the Petes and the organization. It was nice being invited to be a part of it. When you get back and you see the guys, it feels like yesterday. It was a fantastic experience and I’m glad that Peterborough is embracing it.” Hardill currently coaches his son alongside Petes teammate and d-man Jeff McKercher in the Newmarket initiation tyke program.

Jack was not barred from the reality check that is, “where do I go, if not pro.” Upon entering his final year of junior hockey, he explained, “I still wanted to play hockey but I knew going to university, school would be my focus. Western University had an exceptional hockey program at the time and they also had the academics I was looking for.”

Although his time in the OHL did not steer him in the direction of a professional hockey career, Jack admits that there were plenty of life lessons and experiences taught to him from figures like Jeff Twohey. “Everyone obviously wants to take it to the next level and play pro, but the life lessons you learn at Peterborough: commitment, preparation, work ethic are certainly transferrable into the world outside of hockey.”

For many of the same reasons he enjoyed his time in junior hockey, Jack is passionate about his current position a Discretionary Portfolio Manager and Associate Investment Advisor at Canaccord, Genuity Wealth Management, “I Iike the unknown challenges that every day brings and the opportunity to help people reach their financial goals.”

Hardill’s journey on the way up required a grind, starting at a call centre at the Royal Bank and later getting hired by RBC’s brokerage firm, Dominion Securities. From there, amidst the 2008 financial crisis, Jack made his move to Canaccord - Canada’s largest independent full-service brokerage firm. Alongside his business partner Wolfgang Klein, Jack helped grow the business into its current state as a Bay St. powerhouse. Atop his economics degree and demanding financial career, Jack also served for 10 years as an Officer in the Canadian Reserves and is the proud father to 3 young children.

Since his arrival to the Petes training camp, Hardill has faced each life challenge with drive and determination to move upward. He stresses his passion throughout life, whether it be a career in finance or junior hockey, stems from a sheer love of all he pursues.

So you’re booked and confirmed for your winter sun getaway. The time is counting down to your trip and now you have the daunting task of packing your bags. To help you out we have a few tips and tricks to get you ready for some fun in the sun…or wherever you are going.

My best advice is to look for wrinkle free clothing. No one wants to mess around with a hotel iron while on vacation. Marlin Travel now offers cruise and resort wear for ladies with all wash and wear material handy for packing. Now the age old question, fold or roll? Well it is up to personal preference however I find that you can fit more in and clothes wrinkle less if you roll so I am definitely on team roll.

A new trend in travel accessories is travel cubes. You can find these online or at your local luggage store. I found that the packing cubes took up more room in my suitcase however were very handy for separating clothes, packing shoes and dividing dirty clothes from clean.

Be sure to have a travel checklist to make sure you remember to pack everything you need. A hair brush from the resort or toothpaste at the airport can be quite pricey. When you book your vacation through Marlin Travel we will supply you with a checklist to make life easier. For more travel and packing tips you can contact Marlin Travel today. Travel to a lot of people is a long awaited dream, travel agents are dream makers.
