For Halloween, three days of Dundead fun kicks off with Seth Rogen’s animated (but definitelygrown-ups only) Sausage Party and closes with1980s cult classic Fright Night. But don’t wait untilthe end of the month to satisfy that craving for horror: we’ve been granted an exclusive sneak preview of a film that everyone is talking about,Under the Shadow, before it goes out on general release across the UK.

There’s a plethora of special events coming up too – we have satellite Q&As with Louis Theroux andWerner Herzog as well as a live discussion eventafter a brand new documentary about growing uptransgender, Real Boy, which has been organisedby the Scottish Queer International Film Festival. And as if that wasn’t enough, the new releases inthis guide include two of the very best films fromCannes 2016 – Andrea Arnold’s American Honeyand Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake. These two films areamong the best of the year and we are extremelyproud to be able to bring them to you.

Captain Fantastic Fri 23 – Thu 29 September

From the moment we meet them, it’s clear that the Cash clanaren’t your typical family. Deep in a forest somewhere in theAmerican Pacific Northwest, a group of youngsters are beingput through a gruelling training programme that would putBear Grylls to shame. But physical endurance and survivalskills are only part of the teaching that Ben (Viggo Mortensen)wants his children to learn. They also must have a comprehensiveunderstanding of philosophy, literature and music.

The Cash family’s unique way of life changes dramaticallywhen Ben gets the news that his wife, who has been struggling with mental illness, has passed away. Her conservative Christian parents, who never approved of theirdaughter’s extreme life choices, forbid Ben from attending the funeral. Devastated and determined to give their mum theBuddhist burial she wanted, Ben packs up the children andtakes them on a road trip which will change their lives for ever.

Viggo Mortensen was born to the play the role of the idealistic(and oh so charismatic) father who walks a fine line betweenwanting to protect his children and control them. All the youngcast are terrific, particularly George MacKay (Sunshine onLeith), as the eldest child; cautious and sensitive, taking hisfirst steps into an adult world.

Hunt for the WilderpeopleFri 23 – Thu 29 September

We’ve been huge fans of Taika Waititi since Boyfeatured in our 2010 Discovery Film Festival, andhis vampire mockumentary What We Do in theShadowswas one of our favourite films of 2014.Hunt for the Wilderpeople continues that trend:this is an odd-couple adventure film with a hugeheart.

Julian Dennison (last seen in another Discoveryhit, Paper Planes) is Ricky, a 13 year-old who hasbeen in and out of foster homes for most of his lifeuntil being placed on an isolated farm with a newfoster mum, Bella, and her grumpy husband Hec(Sam Neill). Feeling nurtured by Bella, Ricky finallysettles in, but when tragedy strikes he decides torun away into the bush rather than risk beingtaken back into care. Hec follows him and thusbegins a series of hilarious misunderstandingswhich lead to the police launching a manhunt forthe pair. The unlikely duo has no choice but to join forces, and after a rocky start they form a firmfriendship that neither is willing to give up withouta fight.

Dennison brings the perfect blend of wisdom beyond his years and vulnerability to Ricky, whichmeans you’ll be rooting for him from the openingshot to the final scene. Neill’s Hec is a joy to watchas he develops from an isolated older man into akindly caring protector, and all along the way ouroutlaws encounter the memorable and extremelyfunny cast of characters we’ve come to expect in a Waititi film. This film comes with the highestrecommendation you can think of, with a cherryon the top – that’s how much we love it!

Hell or High Water Fri 23 – Thu 29 September

Scottish filmmaker David Mackenzie makes a foray into genrefilmmaking with this outlaws-on-the-run drama, written bySicario screenwriter Taylor Sheridan. With an ensemble castthat includes Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster, this is aclassic American tale told with the fresh eye maybe only anoutsider can bring.

Brothers Toby and Tanner Howard are like chalk and cheese.Recently released from prison, Tanner (Foster) is a loose cannon and certainly doesn’t seem to have learned any lessons from his spell behind bars. But his law-abiding youngbrother Toby (Pine), struggling to meet the mortgage paymentson the family ranch, needs his help – they must raise somecash or lose everything. Their plan to rob only small regionalbanks in Texas starts off well, but soon Tanner’s trigger happypersonality starts to get in the way. It doesn’t help that theyare being tracked by Texan Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Bridges)and his half-Comanche, half-Mexican partner Alberto (GilBirmingham), who doggedly pursue the outlaws across thestate.

A delicate game of cat and mouse begins and you can’t helpbut root for both sides. Pine has an everyman quality thatmakes him very appealing and the odd-couple pairing ofBridges and Birmingham makes for some great comic reliefamongst all the tense robbery set pieces. The ‘ordinary’ folkthey all meet along the way in diners, banks and motels are allstraight out of a Coen Brothers film. With a score by NickCave and Warren Ellis, Hell or High Watermight not be themost original film you’ll see all year, but it is a very entertainingwatch.

Under the Shadow Fri 23 – Thu 29 September

After the surprise hit A Girl Walks Home Alone At Nightwe know we aren’t the only ones who’ve been eagerly awaitingthe next Persian-language genre film. We’re delighted then to be able to offer our audience an exclusive sneak previewof Under the Shadow, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year to glowing reviews.

The setting is late 1980s Tehran, where an atmosphere oftension permeates daily life in the post revolution and Iran-Iraq war era. Shideh (Narges Rashidi) lives with herdoctor husband Iraj (Bobby Naderi) and young daughterDorsa (Avin Manshadi). With her own medical career cutshort because of her left-wing political affiliations, Shidehclearly feels dissatisfied with her home life. When Iraj iscalled up for military service, he pleads with his wife tomove to his parents’ home up North but she flatly refuses, determined to stay in their flat in the city. After a missilestrikes the apartment block and most of the residents flee, Shideh is left alone with little Dorsa in a building whichseems to be taking on a sinister life of its own.

Like Berberian Sound Studio or The Witch, Under the Shadow uses sound design brilliantly to evoke not only theclaustrophobia of communal living but the menace of war and of course, internal psychological demons. The historicalperiod is also a rich well of symbolism from which first-time filmmaker Anvari draws to convey the threats against thedefiant Shideh, both imagined and (perhaps more terrifyingly) real.

Bridget Jones’s Baby Fri 30 September – Thu 6 October

In 2001 the British rom-com was at the height ofits success. What had started with Four Weddingsand a Funeral and continued with Notting Hillwasa celebration of affable and foppish Britishnessthat cinema-going audiences lapped up withpleasure. Then an emphasis on the female perspective was added to the formula, and produced another box office hit in the form ofBridget Jones’s Diary. The story of a chaotic 30-something professional juggling aspirations ofa successful career with dreams of the perfectman, it became one of the best-loved comediesof its time. Fifteen years and a sequel later, we’rebeing treated to Bridget’s triumphant return inBridget Jones’s Baby.

Having broken up with her long time love MarkDarcy (Colin Firth), Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) finds solace in her career as a newsproducer. Focusing on work, she is soon bowledover by love in the form of a suave and handsomeAmerican named Jack (Patrick Dempsey). Hilarityensues when Bridget learns she is pregnant, butdoesn’t know which of her romantic interests thefather is.

Bridget Jones’s Baby is by no means a ground-breaking shift for the romantic comedy, and nordoes it need to be. It is a very funny comedy oferrors with a brilliant lead performance from Zellweger, who has settled back into the role with ease after a 12 year break. Supported by greatcomedy performances from all the cast, includingthe ever-brilliant Emma Thompson, this is a filmsure to have you in fits of laughter.

AnthropoidFri 30 September – Thu 6 October

Based on the true story of a group of Second World WarCzech resistance fighters who dared to attempt to assassinateone of the highest ranking Nazi officers, Anthropoid is one of those rare films about heroes these days which doesn’t involve superpowers, but instead real nerves of steel.

The story has already been the subject of several film adaptations, but writer director Sean Ellis focuses on thecourageous men who carried out the plot. Anthropoid was thecodename for a dangerous mission to assassinate SS officerReinhard Heydrich, the Butcher of Prague, who was one ofthe key players in the Final Solution, Hitler’s third in commandand the leader of the Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia. Two soldiers from the exiled Czech army, Josef Gabcik (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubis (Jamie Dornan) were parachuted intotheir occupied homeland in 1941. With very limited limited intelligence on Heydrich and hardly any equipment, they hadto navigate a city under siege to carry out their mission. Fullyaware that the success or failure of their attempt will shape thefuture of their nation forever, these two men must also live withthe knowledge that their own lives are likely to be sacrificed either way.

Murphy and Dornan are very well cast – one determined andfocused, the other optimistic and hopeful – and both have undeniable screen charisma. Shot in tense close-ups, thecharacters’ emotions become almost palpable, so that whenthe film’s frenetic pace builds to a crescendo for the final confrontation, your heart will be beating alongside theirs.

Little Men Fri 30 September – Thu 6 October

Ira Sachs, who brought us the gem Love Is Strange, returns to New York with an intimate story of friendship between twoboys from very different backgrounds. Beautifully observed,Little Men says a lot about class, gentrification and the painsof growing up.

Shy 13 year-old Jake (Theo Taplitz) has just moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn with his parents (Greg Kinnear andJennifer Ehle) to live in the home they’ve inherited from hisgrandfather. The lower half of the house is occupied byLeonor (Paulina Garcia), who lives with her outgoing teenageson Tony (Michael Barbieri) and runs a small boutique dressshop. Tony and Jake quickly strike up a firm friendship, whilethe adults are drawn into a disagreement over property rights. The two boys are inseparable; rollerblading around the park, going to a teen disco, talking about their dreams for the future: for the first time in his life, Jake feels like he has a real friend. But as tensions mount between his parents andhis friend’s mother, the gulf between the boys’ economicbackgrounds will eventually play a key role in their lives.

Both young actors are utterly engaging and you’ll feel it keenlywhen their friendship starts to falter. Sachs maintains an even-handed approach and the story is truthfully balanced – you’llfeel anger and sympathy for all sides at some point. This is afilm which feels real, as if you’ve just opened the door to yourneighbours’ brownstone and walked in to watch their livesunfold.

The Clan El ClanFri 30 September – Thu 6 October

Definitely falling into the category of ‘truth isstranger than fiction’, Pablo Trapero’s new filmThe Clan is the story of the infamous Puccio family, who made their fortune through a veryshady mix of kidnapping, ransom and murder in1980s Argentina.

On the surface, Arquimedes Puccio (GuillermoFrancella) was a model citizen, but underneaththe veneer of respectability was a domineeringbully. Using his rugby star son Alejandro (PeterLanzani) as a lure, Arquimedes chose his victimsfrom well-to-do families, capturing them andkeeping them in solitary confinement in his basement. Pretending to be part of a secret government operation (very believable given thepolitical climate) he would extract a ransom fromfrantic relatives before having the victim shot. As horrifying as it sounds, for the Puccio family thiswas business, and domestic life went on as normal around them. Shielded by corrupt policeofficials, they continued unchecked until choosinga victim from a family too high-profile to be ignored.

In this parable of the horror which permeated lifein Argentina under the Junta’s rule, Trapero’s contempt for those who participated, colluded or ignored what was going on is palpable. Stylishbut tough, this winner of the Silver Lion for BestDirector at the Venice Film Festival is a compellingwatch.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Fri 7 – Thu 20 October

Beetlejuice. Edward Scissorhands. The Corpse Bride. Dark Shadows. Frankenweenie. When Tim Burton creates another parallel world to share with cinema audiences, the results are always strangely unique. And now we get tomeet Miss Peregrine and her apparently peculiar children. This latest adventure, combining the visionary talents of Mr Burton and the hugely popular best-selling novel by Ransom Riggs, promises another lipsmackingly enjoyable tripto the cinematic candy store.

When Jake follows a series of mysterious clues,he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, he realises that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, andwho he really is.

With a screenplay crafted from the novel by Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class), and a cast of screenheavyweights – including Eva Green, Terence Stamp, Samuel L. Jackson plus everyone’s favourite, Dame Judi Dench– this adaptation promises much. But often films for younger audiences depend on the strength of the younger castmembers’ performances, in which case Miss Peregrine lies in safe hands. Asa Butterfield has demonstrated his considerable skills with leading roles in films including The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Hugo and X+Y, so playing Jakein this big budget affair should come naturally to him. Even when he has to demonstrate his own range of peculiar skills...

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is screening in our Discovery Holiday Films strand. Tickets are £5for under 21s / £5.70 for over 21s, or a family ticket for four costs £16.

The Girl With All the Gifts Fri 7 – Thu 13 October

Scottish filmmaker Colm McCarthy (whose memorable Outcast played in Dundead in 2011), is perfectly poised tomake the leap to the big time with this post-apocalyptic genrefilm. With novelist Mike Carey adapting his own bestseller forthe big screen, this is a very exciting addition to the canon ofrecent zombie films.

Humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims intoflesh-eating ‘hungries’. Only a small group of children seemimmune to its effects. At a secure army base, the youngstersare being studied and subjected to cruel experiments by DrCaroline Caldwell (Glenn Close). One little girl, Melanie (SenniaNanua), stands out from the rest: she excels in the classroomand loves her favourite teacher Miss Justineau (Gemma Arterton). When the scientific facility is attacked by a crazedmob of hungries, Melanie escapes with Miss Justineau, Sergeant Parks (Paddy Considine) and Dr Caldwell. Againstthe backdrop of a ravaged Britain, Melanie must now discover what she is and ultimately decide both her own future and that of the human race.

With terrific production design that makes this world seemterrifyingly believable, what sets The Girl With All the Giftsapart from other zombie films is the moral dilemma at its core, beautifully embodied by young actress Nanua (only 12 yearsold at the time of shooting), who is able to express Melanie’sphysical and emotional needs beautifully.

The Magnificent Seven Fri 7 – Thu 13 October

‘Remake’ has become something of a dirty wordwhen it comes to movies. To take classic filmsand attempt to re-envision them is downright sacrilege to some people. To others it’s viewed as an attempt to pay homage, incorporating aunique take on the original story to create a different yet equally rewarding viewing experience.Director Antoine Fuqua clearly took the latter viewwith his remake of The Magnificent Seven (itself a remake of Seven Samurai), and we think he hassucceeded.

In the old American West, a small town under the shadow of a corrupt industrialist namedBartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) seeks theaid of a group of hired guns made up of outlawsand gunslingers, killers all. Led by bounty hunterChisholm (Denzel Washington) these seven mercenaries, at first fighting for money, realise thathelping the town of Rose Creek means more thanjust financial reward – it means redemption.

The cast of the 1960s original was unbeatablycool, with Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson and SteveMcQueen saving the day. This updated versionalso boasts an outstanding cast, including EthanHawke, Vincent D’Onofrio and Chris Pratt. Aidedby a polished script and the benefit of modernday movie making techniques, Fuqua has createda highly entertaining western that is a credit to thegenre and proves that not all remakes are badideas. Absolutely fantastic fun.

The Girl on the Train Fri 14 – Thu 27 October

The Girl on the Train is already tipped to become this year’sGone Girl, and there are similarities between the two films:both are based on best-selling novels and both are intricatethrillers with unreliable narrators at their core. We are definitelyexcited by the prospect, as nothing quite beats an atmosphericwhodunnit as the autumn nights are drawing in.

One of the significant changes to Paula Hawkins’ originalbook in this screen adaptation has been the transposed location from London to New York, but the same darknessand danger run through this story of personal meltdown.Rachel (Emily Blunt), devastated by her recent divorce and struggling with her own addictions, spends her dailycommute fantasising about the people she sees from the window of her train. Every day she’s been watching a perfectcouple, Megan and Scott Hipwell (Haley Bennett and LukeEvans) and they’ve renewed her hope in love after the disintegration of her marriage. But when Rachel sees Meganwith another man, she is sent into an explosion of fury. Whenshe wakes up the next morning covered in cuts and bruiseswith no memory of the alcohol-fueled events of the night before and the terrifying news that Megan has gone missing,it’s no wonder that Rachel’s greatest fear is herself.

Covering such topics as addiction, loneliness and voyeurismall wrapped up in a Hitchcockian web of intrigue, The Girl onthe Train is without a doubt a perfect vehicle for the terrific talents of Emily Blunt, who’s fast becoming one of thestrongest leads on screen.

War on Everyone Fri 14 – Thu 20 October

Corruption is an ever-present theme in the films of brothers Martin and John Michael McDonagh. From In Bruges to Seven Psychopaths, The Guardto Calvary, the audience is thrust into tales of murder and blackmail populated with charactersso unscrupulous and crooked, that one cannothelp but be shocked by their presence. Shocked, quite simply, because they find themselves rooting for them. John Michael McDonagh makesus love the bad guys, and the bad guys in War onEveryone are hilarious.

What is the point of being a cop if you can’t benefit from a little extortion here and there? This is the ethos that partners Monroe (AlexanderSkarsgård) and Bolaño (Michael Peña) follow onthe mean streets of New Mexico. Any opportunitythat presents itself to frame and blackmail thecriminals they come across is destroyed by theirtrigger-happy fingers. Unfortunately, when thereprehensible duo attempt to strong-arm a villainmore dangerous and nefarious than themselves, things take a turn for the worse.

The onscreen chemistry of Skarsgård and Peña is elevated not only by McDonagh’s sharp, darklycomic script, but by their brilliant comedic timing.Peña stole the show in recent Marvel movie Ant-Man as a fast-talking thief, so it’s no surprisethat in War on Everyone, his enthusiasm forbreaking the law in the name of the law is a ridiculously obscene joy to behold.

Lo and Behold: Reveriesof the Connected World Thu 13 October, 18:00

In 1969, the first brief message to be transmittedover the Internet was sent from a modest computer lab at UCLA to eagerly awaiting scientists a few hundred miles away at StanfordUniversity, launching an astonishing revolutionthat has woven itself into every aspect of modernlife. Since that day, the boundaries of cyberspacehave expanded into a complex web that ties together almost every piece of information in theworld. Majestic, enigmatic, sometimes dangerousand seemingly infinite, the connected world has, almost unnoticed, redefined life for humankind.

In Lo and Behold: Reveries of the ConnectedWorld, the Oscar-nominated documentarianWerner Herzog chronicles the virtual world fromits origins to its outermost reaches, exploring thedigital landscape with the same curiosity andimagination he previously trained on earthly destinations as disparate as the Amazon, the Sahara, the South Pole and the Australian outback. The endlessly inquisitive eye that tracedthe journey of doomed bear enthusiast TimothyTreadwell and dared to imagine the creation of theancient, exquisite Chauvet cave paintings findsbeauty, mystery and staggering potential in thislatest unexplored wilderness.

American Honey Fri 21 October – Thu 3 November

Andrea Arnold (Red Road, Fish Tank) returned to Cannes this year with her latest project, yet another unforgettablystrong film to add to her filmography. As always, Arnold’s commitment to fully exploring the world she’s chosen for hersubject comes through loud and clear in American Honey: from the visual style to the casting and the soundtrack, thisis an authentic portrait of contemporary American youth.

We first meet small town 19 year-old Star(Sasha Lane) as she is searching for food in alocal supermarket skip to feed her young siblings. When a white van pulls up carrying a group of rowdy teens, Starfinds herself drawn to their leader Jake (Shia LaBeouf). He quickly offers her an opportunity to join the crew and hit the road to travel around American selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door. Desperate to escape from the toughreality of her day-to-day life, Star spontaneously decides to take up the offer. Spending hours on the road, she gets toknow the other members of the team and learns the harsh truth (as well as the joys) of being part of this close-knitgroup, who are all just trying to survive.

Working over 56 days with largely non-professional actors, Arnold, her cinematographer Robbie Ryan and the ensemblecast have captured something here which feels utterly vital, urgent and relevant to our understanding of what theAmerican Dream means today. Arnold uses her trademark academy ratio, in which the small square frame focuses intently on the performances. The two leads, newcomer Lane and LaBoeuf (giving one of the best performances of hiscareer), are quite simply mesmerising. With a soundtrack as fresh and pulsating as the film itself, American Honey is ajolt to the system, full of energy and ultimately, one hopes, of freedom.

I, Daniel Blake Fri 28 October – Thu 10 November

Winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, veteran director Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake proves thathe has lost none of his touch. This is an important, relevant, moving film about the way ordinary people are beingtreated by the bureaucracy of our modern welfare state.

At the core of the film is Daniel Blake (comedian Dave Johns) a decent blokefrom Newcastle who, for the first time inhis working life, needs to claim benefitsafter a heart attack has left him unable to work. From the form-filling to the impersonal tone taken by the staff who administer the payments, Blake has entered into a world which is both bewildering and humiliating. When he comes to the defence of Katie (Hayley Squires), a young mother at a job centre who has missed a deadline to be eligible forbenefits she desperately needs, they form a friendship which will carry them both through some very difficult times.

When the film was screened in Cannes it reduced many to tears and there’s absolutely no denying that Loach and his long-time collaborator Paul Laverty have created a film which will be a call to action for anyone who watches it.Carefully researched and fact checked, I, Daniel Blake passionately gives a voice to those often ignored in our societyand shines a light on a situation which is still very much part of everyday reality for so many people in the UK. Now inhis 70s, Loach’s work is as vital as ever and this is without a doubt one of the most important British films of the year.

Celebrate the enduring talent of the Nicholas Brothers with a unique cinematic event hosted by legendary programmer Bruce Goldstein, followed by a chance to see one of their classic performances in Stormy Weather.

Stormy Weather Sun 30 October, 13:00

Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson was the best paid African American actor during the first half of the last century andStormy Weather, which is a highly fictionalised film of his lifestory, remains the high-point of his career for many reasons. One of the very few all African American films produced bya major studio during Hollywood's golden age, StormyWeather tells of Robinson's rise to fame after his return fromthe First World War. The real purpose of the film, however, isto showcase some incomparable talent. Over its 80 minuteduration the film features some 20 musical numbers fromRobinson and other luminaries such as Lena Horne, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Dooley Wilson and tap-dance legends the Nicholas Brothers (many of whom play themselves). Accusations of minstrelsy fall by the waysidein the face of such sheer talent, and the film should foreverbe remembered as a massive step forward in the dignifiedtreatment of African Americans on screen. Essential viewingin so many ways.

The Fabulous Nicholas BrothersTue 25 October, 18:00

We’re delighted to welcome Bruce Goldstein, Director ofRepertory Programming at Film Forum in New York, to DCAfor this very special cinema event. Goldstein, a legendarycinema programmer and writer, will present a unique compilation tribute to the Nicholas Brothers, featuring a collage of rarely seen home movies, photographs and film clips. As co-producer of 1991 documentary on thebrothers, he is perfectly placed to share this celebration of their cinematic legacy.

The Fabulous Nicholas Brothers, Fayard (1914 – 2006) andHarold (1921– 2000), rank among the greatest dancers ofthe 20th century. Despite racial hurdles, the self-taughtAfrican-American entertainers became one of the biggestmusical acts of their time, headlining on Broadway, radioand television and in vaudeville and nightclubs. Their dazzling, show-stopping numbers in movies such as DownArgentine Way, Sun Valley Serenade and Stormy Weathermade them international icons. Known for effortless balleticmoves, elegant tap dancing and perfect rhythms – alongwith a consummate grace and sly sense of humour – thebrothers are in the end impossible to categorise. Their fanshave included Gene Kelly, who teamed up with them in ThePirate; Bob Fosse and Gregory Hines, whose first acts weremodelled on them; ballet legends George Balanchine andMikhail Baryshnikov; Michael Jackson, who once had Fayard as a dance coach; and Fred Astaire, who namedtheir Stormy Weather ‘staircase’ number the greatest of allmusical sequences.

VintageEl SurSun 25 September, 13:15

If any great filmmaker has lived by the credo of ‘quality overquantity’ it is the Spanish director Victor Erice. His 1973debut, The Spirit of the Beehive, confounded GeneralFranco’s censors with its opaque symbolism, but was hailedaround the world as one of the most beautiful, lyrical andmysterious movies ever made. Since then, the 76 year-oldErice has completed only four more films, two of themshorts. Every one, however, is a masterpiece.

El Sur is his second film and the closest in subject and toneto Beehive. Both films are seen through the imaginative eyesof a young girl living in a remote location; both mix the mundane realities of country life with something more magical and eerily Gothic; and both are whisper-quiet, delicately paced, and ravishingly beautiful, with many shotsevoking the chiaroscuro of Rembrandt or Vermeer. The film, however, has languished in obscurity, largely due to a strange occurrence during filming. Erice had originally wanted tomake a three hour film, but the producer shut the production down half-way through, telling the director he had shot enough.

While it is tantalising to wonder what the full film would have been like, the 94 minutes that Erice assembled in no way feelstruncated or incomplete. On the contrary, the half of El Sur that exists is far more rich and satisfying than most fully realisedfilms. Arguably Erice's best film, El Sur is an ‘unfinished’ Spanish masterpiece to file alongside Gaudi’s Sagrada Família.

Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Hiroshima, the Cold War, theCuban Missile Crisis, protest, medical research, Chernobyl,MRI scans, Fukushima. The atomic world has been a paradise lost. Using only archive footage – news reports, cosmic imagery, x-ray photography, astronaut training films– Mark Cousins’ acclaimed film captures the dreams andnightmares of the atomic age. Sausage Party Fri 28 October, 21:15

Sausage Partymight be animated, but it definitely is notfor kids. Irreverent to its core and pushing the limits ofbad taste, it will shock some and delight others. With acast that includes the voice talents of Seth Rogen,Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Kristen Wiig and film references peppered throughout for the die-hard fans, this is a real hoot. Frank is a hot-dog sausage waiting to be selected by human customers (whom he and hisbuddies call gods) so that he can be taken to The GreatBeyond, a Heaven-like paradise. But after he and hissausage pals Barry (Cera) and Carl (Hill) are separatedand Frank is left behind in the supermarket, he begins towonder if everything he believed in is a lie. Maybe theyare all about to be prepared by the gods and eaten.Alongside his girlfriend Brenda (Wiig), a hotdog bun,Frank goes on an odyssey across the shop floor to learnthe truth. Moving from comedy to action to horror withreal skill, the cast are clearly having a blast rippingthrough their dirty dialogue, especially Rogen as a foul-mouthed sausage who is thrust into the role of hero.

Mom & Me / A Wee Night In (Double Bill)Sat 1 & Thu 6 October

A Wee Night InChrissy was a sickly child, so no one expected her to live to a ripe old age. Nevertheless, this Scottish woman is now 95, frailbut full of life. From her house in a village near Glasgow, she engages in activities that keep her active and involved with life.Today, Chrissy’s 91-year-old boyfriend Bill is coming over for a nice evening that will pass by according to the slow rhythm ofage. They rub shoulders in her cozy little kitchen, enjoy a big meal, watch TV and chat like it’s going out of fashion. These twochatterboxes are – in Chrissy’s own words – “well matched.” This relatively new couple have fun bickering together; old ageand the approaching end magnify life’s little pleasures, lending them almost a miraculous sheen. Chrissy talks about how theymet and proudly says that she has never been one to rush into romantic entanglements. Bill spent two years calling her, askingif she would like to go out with him. She always liked to take her time, and still does. This is an intimate, heart-warming portraitof love in old age, full of recognisable, comedic moments.

Mom & MeOscar Wilde wrote, "All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his." With these words,Ken Wardrop opens Mom & Me, in which he travels to America to investigate the role mothers play in the lives of Oklahoma'stough guys. These men come from all walks of life, ranging from a war veteran and a prison inmate to a cowboy preacher anda district attorney. Their mothers are just as complicated: spunky, resilient, demanding, generous, and iconoclastic. As thesemothers and sons ride horses, shoot guns, and discuss their deepest feelings, Wardrop's skill for selecting subjects is matchedby his ability to draw out moments of emotional intensity, revealing their softer sides. From the drug addict trying to re-establisha connection with his mother, to the man whose mother is losing her memory to Alzheimer's, Wardrop’s compassionate observation reveals the universality that underlies this most particular relationship.

Robin and Marian Sun 2 October, 13:15Richard Lester’s Robin and Marianwas greatly misunderstood upon its release. The executives at Columbia were expectingthe usual Robin Hood film: an historical romp full of laughs, action and romance. Lester and screenwriter James Goldman instead produced a dark, mature, morally complex work that they wanted to call The Death of Robin Hood. The studio responded by changing the title, inserting an inappropriately slushy score and marketing it as a romantic comedy. Critics andaudiences were understandably confused when they were confronted with an ageing Robin who returns home from 20 years in the Crusades to find everything has changed – except him. With career-topping performances from Sean Connery, AudreyHepburn and Robert Shaw (the definitive Sheriff of Nottingham), an immaculate script and masterful direction, Robin and Marian is a lyrical, immensely poignant film about what happens when a legend manages to grow old and outlive his time.

The Grump Thu 13 October, 10:30Based on Tuomas Kyrö's popular novel, Dome Karukoski's The Grump juxtaposes the rural values of yesterday's Finland with the country's contemporary urban reality, with alternately hilarious and touching results. The eponymous, unnamed hero(played by legendary Finnish actor Antti Litja) is an 80 year-old farmer who, following a domestic accident, must come toHelsinki and stay with his youngest son, an unemployed New Age sad sack, and his Type A businesswoman daughter-in-law.From the outset, the new houseguest is hell on wheels. His social attitudes are, at best, prehistoric: he's terrified of change andis generally averse to displaying any emotions save rage and frustration. Nevertheless, his generosity, dogged independenceand slow-food work ethic contrast vividly, and favourably, with the trendy attitudes and self-absorbed behaviour of thosearound him – and despite his gruff manner, it soon becomes apparent that the Grump is harbouring painful secrets that he isloath to address.

45 Years Sun 9 October, 13:15Adapted from a short story by David Constantine, 45 Years is a quietly devastating film about a marriage in crisis, navigated bytwo actors at the absolute peak of their game: Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling. It’s the lead up to their 45th weddinganniversary and Kate (Rampling) and Geoff (Courtenay) seem to have an idyllic retired life. Their relationship is an easy one, clearly filled with love and care, even more so as Geoff has just recovered from a serious illness. But despite all their years together, when a letter arrives from Switzerland that reveals some news about the woman Geoff loved before they met, thingsbegin to unravel. Kate starts to question the foundation of their relationship, and Geoff starts to question his life choices. Asmuch a film about memory as it is about marriage, 45 Years explores the very notion of how we construct our lives in theshadow of other people.
