LuAnn Oatman, President

Dear Reader –

With one month of 2017 under our belts, the glimmer of the holidays fading away, and winter greyness a nearly constant

companion, it’s important not to lose motivation or our curiosity, joy, and wonder as we continue onward into this new year.

But of course that’s easier said than done. Each winter we see the advice, articles, and directions on how to avoid the winter doldrums and stay safe and healthy this month and beyond. Of course, you’ll fi nd some similar advice in this issue—it’s always good to have a gentle reminder—but you’ll fi nd some tips focusing on a topic I fi nd more salient to my life, both in terms of New Year’s resolutions, wintertime life, and beyond: taking control of your life.

At Berks Encore, we offer many opportunities to take control: of your retirement, your health and wellbeing, your social life. I hope you’ll take the opportunity this month to take ownership of your life. Challenge yourself. Live with purpose. Take aim. Even with small goals (“Today I will journal a memory or a vision for the future”) and small actions (decluttering your home or calling a friend or family member you haven’t seen

THE SIMPLE LIFE:

Declutter, Reduce Stress, and Downsize in Your Golden Years By Sarah Hunter-Lascoskie, Editor

Whether you plan on aging in place or moving to a retirement community, you’ve probably heard the phrases “downsize” or “declut-ter.” While we accumulate years, we often accumulate the stuff to go with it. It’s part of creating memo-ries and creating your home. But there also comes a time when we may need to part with some of our stuff, or even much of it. Whether you’re moving to a smaller home, moving to a retirement community, or simply making your home a better place to live as you age, decluttering can help.

WHY IT’S HARD…Of course, it’s easier said than

done when it comes to parting with your stuff. Why?

It might be hard to know where to start. If you look around and get overwhelmed by the daunting task of organizing a lifetime of memories and items, you’re not alone. The work can seem hard or insurmount-able. What’s more, we know that the items we accumulate are more than “just stuff”: they’re memories. Ridding ourselves of an item—even if we have no use for it or don’t want it anymore—to which we’ve assigned a meaning or memory can be painful or anxiety-inducing. Ad-ditionally, where will be go with the items we get rid of? Yes, there can be a significant amount of anxiety tied to this process.

Don’t forget that downsizing and decluttering can apply to more than just material possessions, bringing a more personal anxiety to the mix. The things that clutter our lives can be bad friendships or relationships, those bonds that might not bring us any joy. Or we can choose to forge new bonds and rekindle old rela-tionships that can help us focus and find joy in our lives.

…AND WHY IT’S NECESSARYThe many benefits of downsiz-

ing outweigh potential resistance to starting the process. Safety is just one reason: the presence of clutter, due to small furniture, knickknacks, or just the material buildup of daily life, can contribute to the risk of falls for older adults.

Access is yet another great reason to organize. You may have special memories, photos, and mementos that you’d like to have easy access to in your home. Perhaps other items in your home should be more easily ac-cessible than a messy drawer or closet. You might think you’ve lost certain things, when they’re simply the victim of clutter. Ensure the things that are important to you are within your reach.

Additionally, you can treat declut-tering as a means to create a “fresh start”: clutter can be a source of stress or ties to the past. Consider your de-cluttering a way to start anew in this new year.

WHERE TO STARTKeep, toss, donate. It’s a mantra you

can use while organizing and declut-tering. Create three categories/boxes that can allow you to easily sort and manage your things. Take a strategic look at your home: what do you really use? How much space do you have for your items before it’s difficult to find things? Target a local consignment store where you can sell things that are in great condition so your “donate” box doesn’t languish in your home.

Some items might seem more diffi-cult to part with, so develop a strategy for these items: ensure you’re probably disposing of medications. If you’re having a difficult time parting with a nostalgic object, take a photo and save in a photo album or other memory box. Set a timeframe for clothing: if you haven’t worn it in a year or

more, or it’s an item that makes you feel bad about yourself, donate it! If your paperwork is a large source of clutter, consult your attorney or ac-countant about what you need to keep or what you might be able to save as a scan on a computer or hard drive.

Experts say it takes anywhere from 20 to 30 hours to get organized in your home. Really, truly, organizing and decluttering isn’t a brief cleanup job: it’s something that should be treated as a blocked off appointment, such as a doctor’s appointment or dinner date.

Decluttering isn’t something you have to do by yourself, if the job seems overwhelming. Family mem-bers or close friends can provide a helping hand, especially considering they might know your “stuff” almost as well as you do. Paid help is avail-able as well: personal organizers make their living coaching you through the process and creating a doable organization plan, and junk haulers can make your stuff disappear with-out you worrying about transporting it yourself. If you’re moving, Senior Move Managers can provide special-ized help for moving, organizing, and arranging. Prices for assistance vary. As with any professional service you utilize for assistance, check references, get recommendations, and go with a price and assistance level that you are comfortable with.

Once complete, keeping your living space in an ordered and clutter-free state can take just a few minutes each day.

While the process may start as pain-ful, it can be freeing. In 2017, take control of your living space and create the home you want!

The beginning of a new year means that tax season is under-way. Many senior citizens and low- to middle-income families (generally $49,000 and below) simply cannot afford to hire an accountant to assist them with completing their taxes. If you find yourself in this position, Berks Encore can help. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), volun-teers can assist you with completing returns.

Returns are completed at the Fleetwood, Mifflin, Reading, Strausstown, and Wernersville centers by certified volunteers. These volunteers – the majority of whom are senior citizens – prepare for the tax season by completing tax training for Federal returns and for Pennsylvania State returns including the Rent and Property Rebate Forms. The volunteers must also pass a tax test following their training sessions.

The VITA volunteers can prepare federal, state, and local tax forms as well as property tax and rent rebate forms. They can also direct you to someone for help on your PACE/Pacenet applications.

Note: To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. If your spouse cannot attend, please reschedule your appoint-ment so our staff can assist others.

This year, Berks Encore and all VITA locations nationwide will be utilizing a new software program due to changes made by

the IRS. Because of this change, your appointment may take a bit longer as information will need to be entered into this new system.

Berks Encore will begin taking appointments on Monday, January 23. Please call (610) 374-3195, x209 to schedule your appointments. Appointments will begin on February 6 and will continue until April 14. Berks Encore is now taking tax appointments.

Let Berks Encore Prepare Your Taxes This Year

What Documents to Bring When Having Your Taxes DoneWhen you arrive for your Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) appointment, it is important that you bring along the proper documentation. Without it, your VITA volunteer cannot complete the process, which may delay the completion of your return or require that you reschedule your appointment. To keep things on track, be sure to bring the following with you when having a VITA volunteer complete your taxes.

Stay Safe This Winter! No matter how many winters you’ve seen — with ice,

snow, winds, or freezing rain — it’s never a bad idea

to revisit tips to keep you safe, healthy, and warm this

season.

1. Dress warmly – Dress in layers, whether you’re indoors or outside. As we age, we generally produce less body heat, which makes your clothing and outerwear even more important. If you’re going outdoors, be sure to wear a hat, gloves, and warm socks. Use a scarf to cover your mouth. Drink a hot cup of tea or coff ee to warm up.

2. Avoid slips and falls – Be sure your steps or walkways are cleared before you venture outside. Wear shoes with good traction and/or nonskid soles. Replace your worn cane tip with a new one.

3. Be wary of fi res and carbon monoxide – If you’re using a fi replace or natural gas/kerosene heaters, take a few precautions: get your chimney inspected, take advantage of smoke detectors. Don’t use something to heat your home—like a stove—that isn’t meant for home heating. Be sure space heaters are at least three feet away from things that are fl ammable. Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning: headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision.

4. Driving dos and don’ts – Be sure your car has been serviced lately. Your car’s tires, battery, wipers, and fl uid levels can make a big diff erence when the weather is bad. Remember your cell phone when you drive in bad weather, stock your car with basic emergency supplies, and avoid driving on any icy or untreated/unplowed roads.

5. Pay attention to your diet – Because we’re cooped up indoors during much of winter, we might tend to eat with less variety, and we certainly eat less fresh fruits and vegetables. A poor diet can lead to nutritional defi cits and general poor health. Be sure to continue eating a variety of foods, especially those fortifi ed with Vitamin D.

6. Stay connected – Another potential side eff ect of being indoors more due to the weather is greater isolation from friends and family. To help combat any feelings of loneliness or isolation, reach out: call friends or family members to say hello. Even brief calls can make a world of diff erence.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT

Sodium, one of the chemical elements found in table salt, has multiple uses in food processing and preservation. Our bodies also need small amounts of sodium to maintain a balance of body fluids and to keep muscles and nerves running smoothly. However, most Americans eat too much of it – and they may not even know it. Americans eat on average over 3,400 mg of sodium per day, much higher than the recommended limit of 2,300 mg per day (equal to about one tsp. of salt).

Doctors and medical researchers agree that too much sodium can raise blood pressure, which can lead to an increased risk of heart problems and stroke. Adults with high blood pressure then should further reduce their sodium intake to 1,500 mg per day.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO LOWER OUR DAILY SODIUM INTAKE?

• Read nutrition labels. Packaged foods can contain high levels of sodium, even when they don’t taste salty. It is important to use the Nutrition Facts label to check the sodium content per serving. Also be sure to check the serving size; if a serving is one cup but you eat two cups, you have consumed double the sodium.

• Understand nutrient claims. Products claiming to be sodium-free may contain less than 5 mg of sodium per serving, while “Lightly Salted”

means that the product contains 50 percent less sodium than the regular product. Be aware that “Low Fat” or “Lite” does NOT mean low sodium. In fact, some products with lower fat or reduced sugar may actually have MORE salt than regular products.

• Buy fresh or frozen vegetables with no sauce or seasonings added. If you prefer canned foods, choose reduced sodium options. Rinse canned foods such as beans, tuna or vegetables before eating.

• Choose fresh meat, poultry or seafood rather than processed varieties. Bacon, sausage and most deli meats are high in sodium.

• Make lower sodium choices in restaurants. As of May 5, 2017, many chain restaurants will be required to provide written information on the nutrient content of menu items, including the amount of sodium. Choose options that are lower in sodium.

• Limit the amount of salt you add to foods when cooking, baking or at the table. Try no-salt seasoning blends or herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor your food.

At Berks Encore centers, there are certain people who make the little things happen—the details you might not notice that make centers run smoothly. At the Birdsboro Center, Barbara Nonnemaker is one of those people. “She’s a helper,” says Christine Loos, Center Manager.

Each day, Barbara arrives at the center to help with a number of vital tasks. Barbara, a Birdsboro resident, often walks to the center. According to Christine, Barbara is a beloved figure around town. “She’s awesome,” says Christine. “She’s there for everything, and she helps me with everything.” Barbara packs bread for Meals On Wheels delivery, and helps Christine with general set up of the center: anything from setting up for bingo to getting the center party-ready. She helps get coffee, including the cups, for the day, and helps with meal service.

Barbara’s reason for volunteering is simple: the people. “I love to help people,” she says. “And I like all the people here. I have lots of friends here, and they’re really nice.” Before she started volunteering a few years ago, she says, “I didn’t really do anything—I stayed home a lot.” Even when not volunteering, she enjoys taking part in all the center has to offer, especially the coloring

activities. Barbara only

volunteers at Berks Encore, simply because “it’s the only place I want to be.” When she’s not at Berks Encore, Barbara enjoys spending time with her dogs and family—including a new grandbaby!

For anyone considering becoming a volunteer, Barbara says, just come by a center near you: you’ll be hooked. “Come and meet the nice people here—you’ll want to come back,” she explains.

Thanks, Barbara, for your dedication and help. If you’re interested in volunteering or stopping by a center near you, contact Lisa Lorah, VP of Center Operations, for more information at 610-374-3195, x214 or via email at [email protected].

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is a distant memo-ry! Now the wish of many of us is for warmer weather and long, sunny days. At Berks Encore we are still enjoying the spirit of the Christmas season as we continue to dis-

tribute the remaining food and toiletry items that were donated as part of the Subaru Share the Love/ Stuff the Trunk events that took place at Steve Moyer Subaru, First Priority Bank, and at all Berks Encore locations. To say that this year was a success is an understate-ment. We were amazed at the amount of people that gave of their time, their food, and financially to support those that needed to feel the spirit of the holiday season. We can’t thank you enough for helping us to make the holidays a little brighter for over 600 seniors in our community.

It’s this same spirit of giving that allows us to enter into this year with confidence that we will be able to reach our new goal of raising $590,000 this year. Much like the many different programs we offer at Berks Encore, there are many different ways that you can support Berks Encore. All forms

of support help us accomplish our many goals. Many times the gifts are instant, like cash or stocks, and focus on sup-porting a specific program at an organization. Other times the gifts are a planned gift, like a charitable gift annuity that can provide security and generosity simultaneously. The av-enues of supporting Berks Encore are vast, but the one con-stant is you, the generous donor, who is helping us fulfill our mission and vision to support the older adults in our com-munity. We are thankful to the many donors that choose to support Berks Encore and its mission to enable older adults to achieve a better quality of life by engaging the community in providing a comprehensive program of services, referrals, education, and advocacy.

In 2017 we hope that you will again support Berks Encore. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 610-374-3195 if you would like more information on serving as a volunteer. If you would like to make a gift to Berks Encore is can be made online at berk-sencore.org/donate. Thank you again for helping to shape Berks Encore and position it to provide the greatest impact for Berks County’s senior citizens as well as their family members and caregivers.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE LOVE: Today And In The FutureBy Cameron Martin, Vice-President of Development & Marketing

Obtaining a Certifi ed Birth Certifi cateBy State Representative Mark Gillen

As of April 1, 2011, all birth certificates are required to have the full names of both parents. A certified birth certificate will have a raised, embossed, impressed or multicolor seal, the registrar’s signature, and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar’s office.

Copies of birth certificates are available through the state for anyone born 1906 and later. There are multiple ways to request a copy for yourself or a relative. You can order online at the Vital Records website, order by mail, or order and pick one up in person at one of six public offices in Erie, Harrisburg, New Castle, Pittsburgh, Scranton, and Philadelphia. The processing times vary for all three methods. You can call the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Vital Records at 724-656-3100 to learn more about these times.

There is a $20 fee for each certified copy. Check or money order should be made payable to Vital Records. Cash is not accepted. This fee may be waived for individuals who served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces or their dependents.

Anyone seeking a birth record prior to 1906 should contact the courthouse in the county of birth.

My office can help with this application and any other state government-related matters. Please feel free to call 610-775-5130 or stop by 29 Village Center Drive Flying Hills, PA 19607.

Don’t Let The Winter Cold Get The Best Of YouBy: State Rep. Tom Caltagirone

We’re entering the coldest time of the year in our area, and it’s more important than ever to ensure that your heating system is working properly and your home is warm. An extended cold streak can cause serious damage to a home without heat or even cause serious health issues for those living in it.

With that in mind, I want to remind you of Pennsylvania’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that was created to help people pay their heating bill and also help deal with unintended heating emergency. LIHEAP offers both cash and crisis grants to individuals and families that qualify.

The cash grant helps with paying heating bills. These one-time payments are sent directly to your utility company or fuel provider. Cash grants range from $200 to $1000 and are based on household income, size and fuel type.

A crisis grant may be available if you have an emergency situation and are in danger of losing your heat. You can receive more than one crisis grant, but the maximum benefit is $500 during one heating season. Crisis situations may include broken heating equipment, lack of fuel or termination of utility service.

This season’s income guidelines for LIHEAP cash and crisis grants are $17,820 for one individual and increase by at least $6,200 for each additional person in the household. Last season, 345,791 households statewide received $156.3 million in LIHEAP assistance, an average of $452.

You can apply for LIHEAP online at www.compass.state.pa.us, however my offi ce is more than willing and capable to help you with LIHEAP. To apply, you’ll need the name of every person in your household, the date of birth for all household members, the Social Security numbers for all household members, proof of income for all household members and a recent heating bill.

Please reach out to my district office, located on the 3rd floor of 645 Penn St. in Reading, by calling (610) 376-1529. We look forward to hearing from you about LIHEAP or any other state government-related issue.

Although winter is upon us, we still need rain to replenish our water resources. Much of the state was under a drought watch or warning since August 2016, and that included us in Berks County. While drought watch and warning declarations in late fall/early winter are uncommon, they have happened as recently as 2011. Despite rain events in December, we were still 4 inches below normal rainfall amounts.

According to the Department of Environmental Protection, Berks is under drought watch status and the department encouraged Berks residents to voluntarily conserve water by 5 percent. We all must do our part to conserve.

If you depend upon a well as your water source, this guideline is especially important to you.

DEP HAS SEVERAL STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO REDUCE YOUR WATER USE:

• Run water only when necessary. Don’t let the faucet run while brushing your teeth or shaving. Shorten the amount of time you let the water run to warm up before you shower.

• Run the dishwasher and washing machine only with full loads.

• Check for household leaks. A leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water each day.

• Replace older appliances with high-efficiency models. For example, front-loading washing machines that use about 30 percent less water and 40 to 50 percent less energy.

• Install low-flow plumbing fixtures and aerators on faucets.

• Additional drought monitoring information is available on the DEP Drought Information website: http://www.dep.pa.gov/Business/Water/PlanningConservation/Drought/Pages/default.aspx

• The Governor has not proclaimed any county in the commonwealth under drought emergency. If that were to happen, the state would issue mandatory restrictions on nonessential water use to protect water supplies and public health.

Until we receive adequate rain or snow to stem the drought I hope this information is helpful in managing your water supply.

As always, if my office can be of assistance on this or any other state-related issue, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 610-929-2151. We’re here to help!

A COMBAT VETERAN OF WWII REMEMBERS

Catastrophy at Division Headquarters During 10 January at 1330, hundreds of B-17’s passed over the 104th Division zone in the assault on Cologne and other strategic targets along the Rhine River. Suddenly the Bomb Bay doors opened on twelve of the planes. At the Division HQ, everyone scurried for cover, but still there was a toll of 24 lives and 28 wounded. More than 365 bombs churned the Division CP in the Weisweiller Factory and in the area occupied by the 1st Battalion, 415th Infantry. The 1st Battalion had only the day before moved back from the front line into reserve position at Weisweiller for some “Rest and Relaxation.” In this particular incident, my Co. G of the second Battalion was in a “safe” location on the front line. It would be over five weeks til we got back into “hot” action by crossing that roaring Roer River. Of course this was to be militarily planned.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE, ONE ON ONE:

Become a Friendly VisitorBerks Encore’s Friendly Visitor Program connects homebound

seniors with adult volunteers who agree to call or visit for about one hour per week. Volunteers are thoroughly screened and must pass a Criminal History Background Check before being matched with a senior in their area. While location is the most important criterion considered in matching the volunteer with a senior, interests, hobbies, work history, family and pets are all considered before the first visit is scheduled.

By becoming part of the social network matching isolated adults with community members who care about them, the Friendly Visitor Program can have a tremendous impact on the life and well-being of homebound seniors as well as those who get to know them.

This is a flexible opportunity with amazing benefits. Contact us at 610-374-3195, x233 if you’re interested in learning more, or email us at [email protected].

Berks Encore is looking for APPRISE Telecenter Volunteers. No experience necessary; we will train! Volunteers will answer

phone calls coming in on the PA Hotline on Wednesdays and answer general questions about Medicare and assistance programs as well as refer calls to their local APPRISE offi ces for individual counseling.

APPRISE Volunteers Needed!

SENIOR BERNERSThe frigid temperature did

not discourage the Senior Berners from attending their fi rst meeting of 2017. They came to Bern Lutheran Church on West Leesport Road to be with their friends and enjoy a delicious meal.

Martha Sitler was there too. She installed the new offi cers, took their picture, and shook everyone’s hand as she congratulated them for accepting the various positions. They were Bob Frey, President; yours truly, Marie Fies for Vice President; Secretary Faye Beissel; and Treasurer, Nancy Rickenbach. The Committee Chairpersons are Membership, Margaret Gehrig; Phone Caller, Nancy Malandra; Encore Article, Marie Fies; and Lunch Menu, Lillian Hess. Our nominating committee was made up to Jerry Straub, Richard Smith and Harry Yocum. Good job, guys!

Our lunch today consisted of beef and turkey barbeque and a variety of side dishes and, of course, desserts. I would have loved to eat just dessert, it was so hard to pick. They all looked

delicious but just like most of us this time of year. My new year’s resolution is to try to eat healthier (which means limited dessert!!).

Our fi rst trip will be May 17 to Strasburg Railroad. The trip sounds like a fun time, and for $52 it even includes a meal at the Golden Corral in Lancaster. If interested please call Bonnie at 610-926-4163.

Just remember… think SPRING… even if the temperature is below freezing.

Happy New YearMarie J. Fies

UNITY

Well, here it is, in the New Year, already the month of Febru-ary. Hope everyone stayed well in January!

Getting back to our travel update, December 8, 48 Blandon Seniors and Friends, boarded the Elite Coach and headed down South to Washington, D.C. Our fi rst short stop was at the Wegmans in Hunt Valley, MD, and then it was on to McLoone’s Pier House Restaurant in Oxon Hill, MD. Everyone received a lunch of soup and a salad, and then it was on to ICE featuring “Christmas Around the World” at the Gaylord National Harbor. What a most spectacular show it was! Never saw anything like it, Fantastic! Then we had a little time to spend at the Gay-lord National Harbor. Next we headed for the Capital Wheel overlooking the harbor. Beautiful. Then we started out for our dinner at the Cracker Barrel in Linthicum Heights, MD, and following our evening meal we departed for Blandon, which we arrived back at 10:30 p.m. What a most enjoyable trip it was. Thank You again, Shirley Frazer, Trip coordinator, for another outstanding trip!

BLANDON SENIOR CITIZIENS

On December 14 we had our Christmas Dinner at the Fleet-wood Grange, with 72 attending. Mr. Chris Nygard, leader, and several musical students, with their instruments, from the Fleet-wood Middle School, played several Christmas carols, while the seniors enjoyed their noon meal. Martha Sitler installed the offi cers for the upcoming year of 2017: President: PATRICIA ROHRBACH

Vice President: JACK HOLUBEC

Secretary: SHIRLEY L. READINGER-ZIEGLER

Treasurer: ANNA MAE KERSCHNER

Thank You, Martha, for a job well done! Sylvia Knouse introduced our entertainment, Mr. Carl Hausman, on the piano. Carl is a truly wonderful piano player, and he can make his fi ngers just dance on those keys. It was indeed an enjoy-able program! At this time, Anna Mae Kerschner mentioned that everyone that had signed up, would receive a box of fi ne Chocolates, from the makers of Russell Stover Candies, which is a gift from the Club, and Anna Mae, at the end of December, will be the Treasurer of the Blandon Club for 25 years; however, she does not think she will be treasurer for another 25 years. In honor of this 25th year, she herself has given everyone a little gift, which was handed out by our own Santa Claus, Paul Weller, which was a delicious orange. Thank You, Anna Mae! President Pat at this time wished everyone a very Merry Christ-mas and a Happy, Healthy New Year and our next meeting will take place at the Maidencreek Church on February 8 at 1:00 p.m.! Anyone is welcome to join us then!ATTENTION TRAVELERS: Trip Coordinator announced the following trips for 2017: June 1: Mystery Trip

June 18: American Music Theater/Terry Fator

July 31: Mystery Trip

GOOD SHEPHERD U.C.C. PEOPLE OVER 50

As I’m composing this article after Christmas for this newsletter, I hope that everyone had a wonderful Holiday! Our club had a great Christmas party this past month, starting with Rev. Dr. Stewart installing our offi cers for 2017, followed by a delicious county-style lunch of roast beef and ham catered by Dorie Martin. Lunch ended with freshly homemade apple pie ala mode. Our entertainment was supplied by Sam Faranda, playing and singing many favorite Christmas songs.

Despite the fact that February is the coldest and snowiest month of our winter, we have many great meetings and trips planned to keep us warm and happy. Our February program meeting will include an informative discussion from Keystone Villa, the Fleetwood retirement community. As usual, this will be followed by lunch and lots of socializing among our club members.

Great trips are planned for 2017! A few of the upcoming trips include Ace in the Hole- Mardi Gras, at Stony Hill Inn on February 28, Chesapeake City, MD Progressive Dine-A-Round on April 20, and American Music Theater- Vegas Legends at Eden Resorts on May 2.

The monthly meetings of People Over Fifty are held at Good Shepherd UCC usually on the fourth Wednesday at noon. Annual dues are $5, with a $3 per meeting charge to defray expenses for lunch and entertainment. At the same time we renew memberships, accept new members and make reservations for special meeting events.

PRIME TIMERS OF ZION’S CHURCH, HAMBURG

The Prime Timers organization at Zion’s Church, Hamburg has existed for 15 years. It has been made up of persons who were part of what is called The Greatest Generation (the World War II generation).

Recently those who still survive have recognized the need to do a better job of recruiting more people from the younger Baby Boomer generation. This is a challenge because this generation has a very different mindset and interests. They have a differ-ent cultural attitude. Also, some of them are still working. The challenge for our Prime Timers is to bridge the gap that stands between the two.

In the meantime, the winter months remain, making the seniors activity diffi cult. Some of our Zion’s prime timers spend the winter months in Florida. As a result our February events mainly consist of the following:• The fi rst Saturday of each month features a Friendship Circle breakfast

held at the Perry Restaurant at 9:00 a.m.• The monthly Lunch/Bingo event also continues in the winter and will be

held at Zion’s Church on Monday, February 13 at noon.

The 2017 Prime Timers program and schedule of events has been prepared and sent to every prime timer in the congrega-tion. Anyone desiring a copy may request it from the church offi ce at 610-562-2300. Members of the Prime Timers Council are: Mabel Adam, Anita Knoblauch, Betty Kreider, Sandy Kun-kel, Florence Leiby, Linda Schappell, Sandy Stitzer and Linda Wentzel.

PARISH-DANA RETIREESFebruary already? Time defi nitely fl ies when you are having

fun. How are those New Year’s resolutions working out for you? By this time America should be well on its way to being great again. “A chicken in every pot,” as the old saying goes.

Are you suffering from the dreaded cabin fever from all the snow, ice, frigid temperatures, heating bills? Why not join us on Thursday, 2 February 2017 (!) for our monthly meeting? The password for the month is “Chevy line.” Former President Obama and his wife will be giving a presentation. Get there early. Then again, probably not.

Wegman’s Restaurant is still the place — 4401 Pottsville Pike (Route 61) in Reading. The private meeting/dining room is still on the lower level. 11 o’clock a.m. is the time. If you are really suffering from cabin fever, roll in earlier. The love-fest generally concludes at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The hot buffet is served precisely at 12 p.m. when President Carl Ramich drops the gavel and appoints the lucky table to be fi rst in line. The entrée selection will be savory spaghetti, meata balls slathered in tomato sauce, tossed (lightly) salad, fruita cup, garlic bread, isa crema.

As always, this month is the memorial service when we acknowledge all the members who have passed during the previous year. We genuinely encourage all former employees to join us. THINK SPRING!
