Why we offer Masses for the dead…Part I

The practice of offering the holy Mass for the

repose of the soul of the deceased originates in the early church. The catechism teaches, “From the

beginning the church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them,

above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of

God” (No. 1032). Praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased is rooted in the Old

Testament. Judas Maccabees offered prayers and sacrifices for the Jewish soldiers who had died

wearing pagan amulets, which were forbidden by the Torah. II Maccabees reads, “Turning to

supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out” (12:43). Continuing, “(Judas Maccabees) took up a collection among all his

soldiers, … which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, in as much as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he

were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone

to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus, he made atonement for the dead that they

might be freed from sin” (12:46).

at their first bake sale of the year! On November 12th, the 8th grade class will be holding a bake sale in the basement of the church. Donations of bake goods are needed and would be greatly appreciated! Please bring them to church on today, Sunday the 29th. We

BIBLE STUDY

Fr. Brendon will we running an Advent Bible Study after the 12:15 pm Mass on Fridays. We

will begin on November 17, 2017 with an introduction to understanding the Bible. After Thanksgiving we will return on 1, 8, 15, and

22 of December to go over the readings for the four Sundays of Advent.

ANNUAL PRIESTS CONVOCATION

There will be no Mass from November 8th - 10th due to the Annual

Priests Convocation. Holy Ghost Parish at 417 Carlton Ave. Bethlehem,

PA 18015, will have the celebration of Mass during the Convocation of Priests on Wednesday

and Thursday at 8:00 AM and Friday at 12:00 PM.

Special Olympic Collection

This weekend, the Knights of Columbus will be at the doorways at the end of all Masses to receive donations to aid our brothers and

sisters who will attend the Special Olympics. Thank you for your generosity. The Knights are a great

organization of Catholic men that support the Church in many ways. Please talk to the Knights this weekend

about how you can join them!

Por que oferecemos missas pelos mortos ... Parte I

A prática de oferecer a Santa Missa para o repouso

da alma do falecido é originária da igreja primitiva. O catecismo ensina: "Desde o início, a igreja homenageou

a memória dos mortos e ofereceu preces para eles, acima de todo o sacrifício eucarístico, para que, assim

purificadas, possam alcançar a visão beatífica de Deus" (N ° 1032 ).

Orar pelo repouso das almas do falecido é enraizado no Antigo Testamento. Judas Macabeus ofereceu orações e sacrifícios para os soldados judeus que

haviam morrido usando amuletos pagãos, que eram proibidos pela Torá. II Macabeus lê: "Voltando à súplica, eles oraram para que a ação pecaminosa

pudesse ser completamente apagada" (12:43). Continuando, "(Judas Macabeus) tomou uma coleção

entre todos os seus soldados, ... que ele enviou a Jerusalém para providenciar um sacrifício expiatório. Ao fazer isso, ele atuou de maneira muito excelente e

nobre, na medida em que teve a ressurreição dos mortos em vista; pois se ele não esperava que os caídos subissem novamente, teria sido inútil e tolo orar por eles

na morte. Mas se ele fizesse isso com a visão da esplêndida recompensa que aguardava aqueles que haviam descansado na piedade, era um pensamento santo e piedoso. Assim, ele fez expiação pelos mortos

para que sejam libertados do pecado "(12:46).

Quem se exaltar será humilhado, e quem se humilhar será

exaltado

Hoje o Senhor faz-nos um relato dos notáveis de Israel (fariseus, mestres da Lei...). Estes vivem numa situação superficial, não são mais que aparências: «Fazem todas as suas ações só para serem vistos

pelos outros» (Mt 23,5). E, também caem na incoerência, «Pois eles falam e não praticam» (Mt 23,3), fazem-se escravos da sua própria mentira ao buscar só a aprovação ou a admiração dos homens. Disto depende a sua consistência. Por si

mesmo não são mais que patética vaidade, orgulho absurdo, vacância... Necedade.

Desde os inícios da humanidade continua sendo a

tentação mais frequente; a antiga serpente continua sussurrando ao ouvido: « no dia em que comerdes da árvore, vossos olhos se abrirão, e sereis como Deus, conhecedores do bem e do

mal» (Gn 3,5). E continuamos caindo nele, fazemo-nos chamar: “rabi”, “pai” e “guias”... E

tantos outros opulentos qualificativos. Demasiadas vezes queremos ocupar o lugar que não nos

corresponde. É a atitude farisaica.

Os discípulos de Jesus não hão de ser assim, pelo contrario: «o maior dentre vós deve ser aquele que vos serve» (Mt 23,11). E como que temos um único

Pai, todos eles são irmãos. Como sempre, o Evangelho deixa-nos claro que não podemos

desligar a dimensão vertical (Pai) e a horizontal (nosso) ou como explicitava no domingo passado,

«amarás o Senhor, teu Deus (...). Amarás teu próximo como a ti mesmo» (Mt 22,37.39).

Toda a liturgia da Palavra deste domingo está

impregnada pela ternura y a exigência da filiação e da fraternidade. Facilmente ressonam em nosso

LA CONVOCACION ANUAL DE LOS SACERDOTES

No habrá Misa desde el 8 - 10 de noviembre debido a la Convocación Anual de los Sacerdotes.
