From the Pastor’s Desk...As Jesus preached and ministered
to the people, He preached the presence – and the coming – of the Kingdom of God. That may seem very familiar to us, but even the presence of God’s kingdom confronts the reality of the hardships of daily living. As we await the end time fulfillment of God’s justice and mercy, the world is, for many, a difficult place.
In Luke’s Gospel today, we heard what may be called Luke’s version of the Beatitudes, but they are presented in a different form than in Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus addresses all who suffer misfortune in this life – poverty, hunger, sorrow, and persecution. They are called “the Blessed.” “Happy are you,” Jesus told all who experienced the sad and unjust realities of life. In the kingdom of my Father, Jesus said, your situation will be changed because you will experience the justice and goodness of God’s kingdom.
Jesus does not condemn or write off those who experience life otherwise. He does issue a warning, however, and laments their situation in life. Those who are self-satisfied, well-fed, content and admired, must understand that the coming of the Kingdom belongs first to those who experience heartache and injustices in this world. The Kingdom will come, Jesus taught, to bring relief and hope to those whom the world has written off.
We are all invited and indeed challenged to become citizens of the kingdom. But the self-righteous, the well-educated and well-fed, the successful and well thought of need to recognize with whom God identifies: the lost, the forgotten, the trampled and left out. All are called to salvation and discipleship, but with whom do we identify?
Have a Good Week!
Fr. Bill Arnold
