Can you believe it? Next week is Palm Sunday! It seems like it was Ash Wednesday and we are now preparing to celebrate Holy Week and Easter. You should all have received my Easter letter with the schedule for Holy Week and your Easter Offering Envelope. If you have not received it, please call the Rectory. For your convenience, we are printing the Holy Week Schedule at the bottom of my column. We ask you to bring your Rice Bowl Offering next Sunday and place it in the bowl at the entrance of the Church. This offering will be sent to help the poor in our Archdiocese and in the world. We thank you in advance for your generosity. Palm will be distributed by the ushers next week as you come into the Church. It will be blessed at the beginning of Mass.

This Friday, April 11th, we will have the Living Stations of the Cross performed by our 8th Graders of St. Laurentius School, a spiritual talk by Catherine Joanne and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The service will begin promptly at 7:00 P.M. You will be inspired by Catherine and the Way of the Cross that she wrote. It is called “He Knows My Pain.” Bring a relative or friend. Make time and plan to attend. Catherine Joanne runs a Retreat House in Ludlow, Vermont, near the Weston Priory. I go to her retreat house, called St. Joseph’s Dwelling Place, every year for my annual retreat. We will have a Penance Service this Tuesday, April 8th, at 7:00 P.M. in Holy Name of Jesus Church. I have invited several priests to come and help you to reconcile with the Lord. Please take advantage of this opportunity to prepare yourself for the celebration of Easter. We thank everyone who supported the Say Goodbye to Winter Raffle Drawing and Beef and Beer last weekend. The event was a success. The winners of the raffle were: 1st prize $3000.00 - Marge Maines 2nd prize $1000.00 - Caitlyn Ellis 3rd prize $500.00 - Carl Bender

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There is a geography to the liturgy of baptism that distills the journey of faith. Each part of the liturgy is assigned to a distinct part of the church building. Baptism, whether of infants carried to church by their parents or of adults following the paschal candle into a darkened church at Easter, starts at the door. First, a threshold must be crossed and a new community of meaning and memory encountered for the first time. Then, the celebration moves to the place for God’s Word. Next, as the litany of the saints is sung, there is a procession to the font. Finally, the movement is to the table, the altar of the Eucharist. There, newly baptized adults are brought to the sacred meal, or the parents of infants are blessed and reminded that their child will one day share fully in the table’s banquet. Many Catholic churches honor this geography by placing the font near the door, or at least small vessels with water. The doorway of our church is a place of memory, and a passageway to a new way of living. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The St. Laurentius/Holy Name CYO is looking for responsible individuals for coaching (soccer, basketball, baseball, etc.) positions for the upcoming school year. These positions will need to be filled in order to continue our program. If you are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of our children, please contact Tim Breslin 215-764-9361.

FROM THE DEACON’S DESK. In today’s second reading we have St. Paul’s instruction to the Roman Christians, we have a direct reference to the future resurrection to a life of unending glory for all those who during this time on earth were loyal to God and Christ. This resurrection in a new body, which will never again be subject to death or pain or suffering, has been won for us by Christ who, having died for our sins, was raised by the Father, on Easter morning. The thought of this glorious future should never be far from our minds. It was this thought that enabled the martyrs to face their executioners with joy in their hearts. It was this thought that made the saints rejoice in their bodily sufferings. It was this hope of eternal happiness which sparred on millions of ordinary men and women like ourselves, whose life on earth was a monotonous sequence of one drudgery after another, one misfortune following on the heels of the previous one. It is by imitating these people that we too will join them when our call will come. It is by bearing the burdens of each day, by welcoming, and seeing God’s will in all the ups and downs of our very ordinary lives, that we can join them. You have the Spirit of Christ in you, St. Paul tells us, if you are striving to live a Christian life. This means taking each day as it comes, offering to God its joys and its sorrows, its honest pleasures and its pains, its sunshine and its showers. All this means: living in peace with God and with your neighbor. This may sound easy but it is not so; it will mean much self denial, but then think of what awaits us at the end of our road, a resurrection to a new life, an unending life of happiness. May God grant that we may all have this happy ending to our earthly ending.

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER On a gloomy, rainy Sunday, while walking home from the 9:30 A.M. Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Church, I felt as though even the heavens were feeling my pain. Suddenly, my umbrella got caught on a low-lying limb. While trying to detangle it, of course, I got soaked. However, when looking more closely at the limb, there on the wet, dark brown wood, were tiny green leaves. Hope and renewal, my friends. The Lord works in mysterious ways. Thank you to all of you who helped support the parish/school fundraiser last week at Holy Name of Jesus Church Hall and who bought raffle tickets. Tiny, little green leaves! The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be received for the first time by our 2nd and 3rd graders, and students from the PREP program, on Thursday night at 7:00 P.M. at Holy Name of Jesus Church. Please pray for these children and their families as they enter into the mysteries of our faith. A Scholastic Book Fair is being held on Monday and Tuesday this week. This is an opportunity for our children to have a book store come to them. Proceeds help maintain our school library. Our 8th grade students will perform the Live Stations on Friday night at 7:00 P.M. at Holy Name of Jesus Church. This is truly a moving presentation and I hope many of you can find the time to come. As we draw closer to the holiest of seasons in our faith, let us all continue to pray for each other. Have a joyous week, everyone. Look, really look, for signs of hope and renewal. God bless you. – Mrs. McKnight

ST. LAURENTIUS SCHOOL The tenth tuition payment is now due. Please use your Smart Tuition Account. Non-Smart payments may be made at the Holy Name of Jesus Rectory during normal business hours.

LIFE FROM DEATH Lent is about Easter, and Easter is about life after death. As we draw closer to Easter, the Sunday readings become more and more explicit about this. In a rather dry, matter-of-fact way, today’s reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans teaches that our “mortal bodies” will be raised to life. But in a far more gripping way, the Lord shouts at us through the prophet Ezekiel, “O my people, I will open your graves . . . I will put my spirit in you . . . I have promised, and I will do it.” When Jesus saw the people weeping over the death of Lazarus, he was troubled in spirit and moved by the deepest emotions. Approaching the tomb, Jesus himself began to weep. He loved Lazarus. In fact, Jesus loved Lazarus so much that he snatched him out of his tomb, back to life. That’s how God loves us. Copyright © J.
