FAZtor’s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Welcome back to our school chil-dren! It was “Back to School” last week for both our Holy Name Preschool and Grade School. Our Preschool, in its first regular school year, will have 40 stu-dents coming in at different

times. At the Grade school, we have approximately 340 students.

One morning a mother was trying to wake up her son. "Wake up now! It's time to go to school." "I don't want to go to school," the son replied. His mother said, "Give me two reasons why you

don't want to go to school." "Okay. One, all the children hate me. Two, all the

teachers hate me." "Not good enough," the mother replied. "Fine," the son said. "Then you give me two good

reasons why I SHOULD go to school." "One, you're 50 years old. Two, you're the princi-

pal of the school."

I would like to welcome a new faculty member to our school, Vanessa Faulkner, who will be our new teacher in 6A. Vanessa, who has a degree in Elemen-tary Education and a Masters in English, comes from West Virginia. She has been teaching English, reading comprehension and writing skills at various grade lev-els for three years. Vanessa will teach 6th grade Eng-lish and literature and 7th grade English. We also have a new part time aide for the 3rd grade, Aline Lebbos. Welcome to our community!

Congratulations to our newest couple, Joseph and Kimberly Lau, who recently entered a lifelong partner-ship of life and love through the Sacrament of Matri-mony last Saturday, August 18, 2012. I was honored to officiate at the mass here at our church. Welcome to married life!

It is really nice to know that there are still people who value the importance of the Sacrament of Mar-riage and not just any type of marriage. You wish all the happiness for the couple, with a prayerful wish that they will keep the vows they made on their wedding day. If you have been married for a long time, maybe you can give our young couples of today your good advice.

Here’s an example: At my granddaughter's wedding, the DJ polled the

guests to see who had been married longest. It turned out to be my husband and me. The DJ asked us, "What advice would you give to the newly-married couple?"

I said, "The three most important words in a mar-riage are, 'You're probably right.'"

When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity, and he told his followers:

“ Give them some food yourselves.” - Mark 6:37

ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL 2012

The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is the method chosen by the pastors to fund the operation of the Arch-diocese. Eleven pastors (the Archbishop’s Stewardship Council) oversee the process and recommend individual parish assessments. This funding supports ministries provided by the parishes, provides direct ministry when the scope of that ministry is too large or complex for any single parish to accomplish, maintains centralized ser-vices and support for all the parishes and schools, pro-vides continuing education and other services to priests and deacons, maintain communication with the California Conference of Bishops, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Vatican, and provide financial support to these entities to demonstrate once again that “Catholic” means “universal” and that our Church is big-ger than any parish or diocese. The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal helps individu-als, the parish and the Archdiocese realize their respec-tive opportunities as Christian stewards. To date, we have received $35,286.00 (63.69%) in pledges towards our goal of $55,400. Thank you for your generosity and continued support.

PLEASE HELP US REACH OUR GOAL! SEND IN YOUR AAA 2012 DONATION NOW!

A LIFE WITH GOD People find some of Jesus’ teachings very hard to accept. Some of the disciples mentioned in today’s Gospel are no exception. They could not ac-cept what Jesus had just said about himself as the bread of life, so they left. Jesus did not beg them to stay or run after them to call them back. He knew that they were not ready or able to hear what he was saying. The fact is, God does not demand that we believe, but once we are committed to a life with God it is demanding and all-consuming. We often hear, “I am not religious, but I am very spiritual.” Ei-ther the person has seen and rejected a life of faith, or has not understood what a life of faith requires and is seeking meaning and emotional comfort else-where. We bear some responsibility for this. The best way for people to recognize Jesus is through our example. If we live a life worthy of our calling in Christ, there is no knowing who will be brought to faith by seeing what we do and who we are. We do not have to stand on street corners and preach, or tell people they’ll go to hell if they don’t believe. We simply need to act like Jesus. Bracelets inscribed with the letters WWJD? (What Would Jesus Do?) have become very popular recently. Perhaps a bet-ter way to say this is “What Would Jesus Have Me Do?” The responsibility is not on Jesus but on us, for he is not asking us to do impossible things, only to live up to our full God-given humanity. We all at some point have to be like Joshua in today’s first reading. “Decide today whom you will serve . . . we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications.
