Message from Pope Francis

Dear People of God,

Our Easter Season continues! I would like to share with you a letter written by Pope Francis to Cardinal Cupich and the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago earlier this month. Pope Francis totally endorses the efforts of the Archdiocese of Chicago promoting anti-violence in our city. This is a marvelous letter that Cardinal Cupich would like to share with all of you. May we pray for an end to violence in our city, nation and world.

Walking with you,

Fr. Greg

P.S. A very warm welcome to Deacon Dan Welter who will join our Staff part-time beginning this week. Dan spent the last two years serving the people of God at St. Gertrude’s Parish in Chicago and is the new Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Welcome aboard! Dan will be a marvelous addition to our Staff. Our prayers are with you, Dan.

Stewardship Stewardship is a two-sided perspective. Today’s Gospel Reading recounts Jesus’ appearance to two disciples who were on the road to Emmaus. In various scriptural passages, there are 12 accounts of Jesus appearing in the flesh, a few times to just one person, but once to 500 people. What is interesting about today’s account is the two, although evidently familiar with the Lord, do not recognize Him. This is a challenge for us today as well. St. Teresa of Calcutta once wrote, “I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus; I must feed him. This is sick Jesus. I must wash him and tend to him. I serve because I love Jesus.” That should be our motivation for serving, for being a disciple, for practicing stewardship. Like the two disciples going to Emmaus we must be alert and prepared to see Jesus in places we least imagine Him. Stewardship is, of course, a two-sided perspective. Not only do we need to seek and search for Jesus in others and then serve, but also others need to see and recognize Jesus in us. The original Greek word for what we read as “throes of death” could also be translated as “the birth pains of death.” Jesus’ resurrection is as if He was in the womb, and being raised in this way He was born to new life. That is what we, too, can expect and hope for.

Easter Liturgical Music

The Easter Season is a joyous part of the church year that is reflected in the seasonal liturgical music.

The hymn, Jesus Christ is Risen Today is among the most well-known hymns in the hymnody of the church. But with the Easter Season is also the return of the Glory to God in the Ordinary. The Paschal Gloria is a setting by Richard Proulx arranged by H. Ricardo Ramirez.

The Easter Mass is intimately connected with the solemn rite of baptism, and, as a reminder of our baptism, today’s liturgy includes the Renewal of Baptismal Promises and the Rite of Sprinkling. Today’s setting is by Leo Nestor, formerly the Director of Music for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

New Ushers Whether it is seating, greeting, or assisting our brothers and sisters in faith, the Usher always does it with a tremendous sense of hospitality. Certainly a part of being an Usher is the taking up of the regular Sunday collection, and the occasional special second collection, but more than that Ushers provide the service of making our visitors and parishioners feel at home and welcome during our Eucharistic celebrations.
