Parish News
Please notify the church office in advance of a surgery or
scheduled hospital stay so that you may receive the
Sacrament of Anointing. The Church has always prayed
for the sick to be freed from pain and restored to health.
This sacrament originated in the healing ministry of
Jesus. An anointing may be scheduled before or after a
Mass or during the week.

SMALL GROUPS UPDATE:
WHAT? Small Groups is a ministry at Holy Martyrs
which will make our large church small and personal, as
small groups gather together for the purpose of grow-
ing in relationship with God and one another. Resources
will focus discussion on spiritual topics that are relevant
to adults’ daily lives.
WHOM? Small Groups are currently open to all adults of
HM. We plan to form groups for the following: married
couples, single adults, men, women, parents of PSR stu-
dents, parents of HS teens, and parents of pre-school
children.
WHERE? Small Groups may meet in members’ homes
on a consistent or rotating basis, or at Holy Martyrs
Church.
WHEN? Small Groups will meet weekly from November
through May. There will be breaks at Thanksgiving,
Christmas, mid-Winter, and Easter, so that groups will
meet a total of 22 times between November and May.
WHY? Next week the bulletin article will address:
Why is Small Groups ministry valuable?

Throughout the Diocese
Today, we will take up the collection for the Catho-

lic social media activities and enriches our faith through
podcasts, television, radio, and print media. Please be
generous in this week’s collection and support this im-

our diocese to support local communication needs. The
CCC is how we share our experience of faith, worship,
and witness to the world.

Take Your Kids to Church
(Part I of a 4 part article)
Parents often feel self-conscious taking their small children to Church. We worry that our little ones will
disturb others or prevent us from “getting anything out of Mass.” While we do need to be sensitive to people
around us and it can sometimes be hard to attend to what is going on when we are trying to manage a crying
baby or squirming toddler, the truth is, our children are a valuable member of the faith community. As
baptized members of the Body of Christ, it is not only good that infants and toddlers come to Mass, they have
a right to be there. As Pope Francis recently put it, “Babies cry, make noise, go here and there. But it annoys
me when a baby cries in church and there are those who say he needs to go out. The cry of a baby is God’s
voice: never drive them away from the church!”
~Dr. Gregory Popcak is the Executive Director of the Pastoral Solutions Institute an organization
dedicated to helping Catholics find faith-filled solutions to tough marriage, family, and personal problems.

TIME TRAVELERS
The first Time Travelers was a real success. Children were
excited and participated well throughout the period they
spent away from their parents.
Our shepherds, leaders and technicians are very willing and
anxious to grow in their roles so that is very encouraging.
We do need additional adults who might be interested in help-
ing with this ministry. Many helpers make for light work.
If you would be interested in being a part of this ministry on
Sunday mornings please talk with one of the TT adults or Diane
Bruce.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Part II of II: Making Moral Choices and Applying Our Principles This brief document is Part II
of a summary of the US bishops’ reflection, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, which
complements the teaching of bishops in dioceses and states.
How Does the Church Help the Catholic Faithful to Speak
About Political and Social Questions?
Avoiding Two Temptations
Two temptations in public life can distort the Church’s defense of human life and dignity: The first is a moral
equivalence that makes no ethical distinctions between different kinds of issues involving human life and dig-
nity. The direct and intentional destruction of innocent human life from the moment of conception until natu-
ral death is always wrong and is not just one issue among many. It must always be opposed. The second is
the misuse of these necessary moral distinctions as a way of dismissing or ignoring other serious threats to
human life and dignity. Racism and other unjust discrimination, the use of the death penalty, resorting to un-
just war, environmental degradation, the use of torture, war crimes, the failure to respond to those who are
suffering from hunger or a lack of health care or housing, pornography, human trafficking, redefining civil
marriage, compromising religious liberty, or unjust immigration policies are all serious moral issues that chal-
lenge our consciences and require us to act.
