The name” Adam”, for example, meant both “man” and “dirt”, showing both what Adam was and what he was made from. In the case of our Lord, “Jesus” meant “God Saves” in Hebrew. This name was doubly appropriate, since Jesus was both fully God and fully human, and died to save all from their sins. This choice subtly displayed both the na- ture of Jesus and the mission of his life. Ironically, “Jesus” was actually a very common name for boys during this time. In having such a common name with so profound a meaning, Jesus also communicated that his mission was not only for the great, the wise and powerful, but also for the common and the humble throughout the world. So how many little boys were named Jesus? Archaeolo- gists have unearthed the tombs of 71 Yeshuas from the period of Jesus’ death. (this is the transliteration of Jesus’ name, Yeshua, into Greek and then English.) When you are reading your bible, you found that the name appears 30 times in the Old Testament, referring to four separate char- acters, including a descendent of Aaron and a man who accompanied former captives of Nebuchadnezzar back to Jerusalem. A long version of the name, Yehoshua, ap- pears another few hundred times in the Old Testament. So how do we get from the Hebrew hero of Yehoshua to our Christian Messiah Jesus? Ok, here’s your history lesson of the day: The New Testament was originally writ- ten in Greek—not Hebrew or Aramaic or English! Greeks did not use the sound “sh” (believe me, I’ve been to Greece, and their alphabet is definitely different!), so the evangelists substituted an “S” sound. Then to make it a masculine name, they added another “S” sound at the end! The earliest written version of the name Jesus is Roman- ized today as Jesous. Then there is the initial J—which didn’t come until much later. That sound was foreign to Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek and Latin. Even in the English Language, the letter “J” was not distinguished from the letter ‘I” until the mid 17th century! So if you happen to have a King James Bi- ble from the 1600’s, you would find Jesus referred to as Iesus and his father was “Ioseph”. Our current spelling of “Jesus” probably came from Switzerland, where J sounds more like the English Y. When English Protestants fled to Switzerland during the reign of Catholic Queen Mary 1, they used the Geneva Bible and the Swiss Spelling. Trans- lators in England adopted the Geneva spelling by 1769— and thus “Iesus” became our familiar “Jesus”. On Christmas morning, dazzle your family with these facts! Merry Christmas to all! THE NAME “JESUS” We will soon celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. And as always, I got to thinking and so started looking and researching. My question was about Jesus’ name—where did it come from? Were there a lot of little boys running around back then named Jesus? Here are some interesting things I found:
