Blessing for a Christmas Tree
Lord God, Let your blessing come upon us
as we illuminate this tree. May the light and cheer it gives
be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts, May all who delight in this tree
come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord
~Amen
PRAYER AND REFLECTION December 6, 2015 2nd Sunday of Advent
On this Second Sunday of Advent, we hear more promises of hope. Hope is proclaimed to the exiled people longing to return to Jerusalem, to the Philippians from the imprisoned Paul, to those caught in political turmoil during Jesus’ lifetime. And we hear voices all around us yearning for hope. Pope Francis has called for this Year of Mercy to be a time for hope for all of us. Our hearts are open to new possibilities.
We pray now for all those in need of hope in this community and throughout the world.
For all of us in the church who are called to be a sign of hope … in this time of hope and mercy, we pray, For hope for those in exile today: for prisoners, refugees, undocumented immigrants, runaways, victims of human trafficking … in this time of hope and mercy, we pray, For hope for those in deep poverty or any kind of economic stress … in this time of hope and mercy, we pray, For hope for those suffering from chronic or incurable illness, depression, anxiety or addictions … in this time of hope and mercy, we pray, For hope for those in dangerous political situations, especially in the Middle East and in Africa … in this time of hope and mercy, we pray, For hope for those still burdened by racism, sexism, ageism, classism or any kind of dehumanizing discrimination … in this time of hope and mercy, we pray, For hope for all who are in need of mercy … in this time of hope and mercy, we pray, For those caring for the ill or grieving for the dead; and for those who have died … (names) … in this time of hope and mercy, we pray, Prayer: Merciful and loving God, you have sustained your people for generations with promises and signs of hope. Keep our hearts open to your ongoing love and show us how to give hope to all who cross our paths. We pray in the name of Jesus, the great sign of hope. Amen. Celebration 2015

A simple St. Nicholas Day celebration adds a bit of welcome festivity in the early days of Advent. It provides an opportunity to tell the story of St. Nicholas, a man of faith whose goodness and generosity grew out of his love for God. It enriches our understanding of Santa Claus by showing the real historical person who inspired the familiar legend and traditions.
So tell a story of St. Nicholas' generous example of giving in secret to those in need. Then encourage children to identify a kindly "Nicholas deed" to do for someone else. Have children fill their shoes with pieces of carrot or bits of hay for his white horse or donkey. Place shoes outside bedroom doors or on the hearth. See that a candy treat (a candy cane represents Bishop Nicholas' crozier) and simple gift appears by morning on December 6th.
FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE
CONCEPTION
Mary the Mother of God is venerated on December 8th as the Immaculate Conception. This feast commemorates the preservation of the Blessed Virgin from the stain of original sin from the first moment of conception. Mary played a special roll in God’s redemptive plan. She was sinless in order to be a worthy channel for Christ Mary’s obedience was the condition for the coming of the Savior. She did not understand God’s plan but she accepted it totally. Like, Mary, we too should be open to God’s will.
December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses for the Holy Day are as follows:

HOLY FAMILY PARISH SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
II Dom do Advento (Ano C): – Baruc 5,1-9; Salmo 126(125); Filipenses 1,4-6.8-11; Lucas 3,1-6

HOLY FAMILY PARISH SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
We can share the light of Jesus. Jesus taught that all of us can be a light of love for others. During Advent,
we use the candles and offer prayers to remind us of the ways we can let the light of Jesus shine in us. Write or draw something that shows how you can let
the light of Jesus shine in you during Advent.
Saint Nicholas Day
Saint Nicholas was a bishop who loved children and took care of the poor. In the country of the Nether-
lands, children celebrate Saint Nicholas Day. At nighttime they set out their shoes and in the morning they wake up to find them filled with nuts, candy, and
other gifts.
