PASTOR’S CORNER

Results of a recent Gallup survey showed that Mass attendance in the U.S. has gone down to a 39% weekly average from an average of 45% in 2008 and 75% in 1955. If you’ve been going to Mass weekly over many years, you don’t really need a survey to notice the decline in attendance over time. It’s important to note that this survey covers the whole United States where the statistics vary from region to region. In fact, the Northeast is now considered the least practicing population within the United States across denominations. Presently, here in the Archdiocese of Boston, the average weekly Mass attendance is, conservatively, 15%. Still, that figure does not necessarily represent the same people coming each week; there is a steady, faithful core who do. However, there is a growing number of Catholics who no longer take the weekly Sunday Mass obligation seriously and so, they may attend periodically - twice a month or monthly or less frequently. Anecdotally, many of these are drawn away by sports schedules or other activities.

Here at Holy Family, as do all parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston, we report a count of the number of people who attend Mass weekly in the month of October. The October Count average attendance in 2006 was 1695. In 2010 it was 1252. Last year - 2017, it was 995. For a while now here at Holy Family, we’ve been counting the attendance at all Masses throughout the year. An unfortunate trend downward has developed since the beginning of this new year where the average count of the number in attendance weekly has dropped to about 875 at the present time. I’ve brought this to the attention of our parish staff and Parish Pastoral Council for their insights and recommendations. Various factors have been considered including weather related conditions which would affect the attendance of the older members of our community. It’s important to remember that the general trends we are experiencing are not representative of our parish alone, but what is taking place across our Archdiocese and across denominations.

I offer these sobering statistics, not to discourage you, but to provide you with the reality we face as a Church and an important reason for the call of our Holy Father, Pope Francis and our Archbishop, Cardinal Sean to carry out our important role in evangelizing our brothers and sisters. The Pastoral Plan of our Archdiocese entitled, Disciples in Mission, reinforces this emphasis. And, as our parish enters phase 7 of this Pastoral Plan in a year from now, we will be hearing more and more about what we can do to enliven the faith of those who no longer join us for Mass each week. Let us keep them and all of us in our prayers!

God bless you! Fr. Bob
