MISSION STATEMENT ✝ Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

Dear Parishioners: As you know, I lead a retreat experience as part of the Assisi Performing Arts Festival every July. The festival takes place in the city made famous by St. Francis and is a beautiful setting for a retreat and music festival. Today the choir from the festival is singing at one of the principal masses at the Basilica of St. Francis and, next Sunday, they will perform at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Know that I will remember all of you and your intentions at both Masses. I hope that someday, perhaps next year, more of our parishioners could take advantage of this wonderful experience. A retreat is always a time of renewal and insight. It prepares us to better

embrace the mission to which the Lord, in today’s Gospel, sent His disciples and sends each of us in our day-to-day lives. His instructions to them apply to us, though in a different way, regarding the details of the way they would present themselves. He instructed the disciples to “carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals and greet no one along the way...” In other words, He called them to witness to Him by their lifestyle so that they would raise the right questions regarding their purpose and He asks the same of us - - by our lifestyle to witness to the Kingdom’s presence in our midst and raise the right questions. STATUES MAKE WONDERFUL GIFTS! Patricia Little, who heads our Arts and Environment committee, now has beautiful, brand new statues for sale. Some of the statues are on display in the Church vestibule. These statues are made of either cement or fine plaster, hand painted and airbrushed details (faces, flowers & gold trim), with long-lasting lacquers. Plaster statues are for indoor use; cement statues may be left outside all year and withstand the

elements. There are several sizes to choose from: 9", 12", 18", 24" & 36" and a portion of the proceeds from the statues purchased will go to Holy Family Church. Patty also restores statuary. Whether it is an indoor statue or sculpture with chips, cracks or missing parts, or an outdoor statue which has faded or discolored from age or acid rain, Patricia can make your statue look like new. Visit www.restorationsbypatricia or call Patty for a free estimate: 973-985-5303.

Our Italian Festival is coming up... Thursday, September 19, 6-10 pm

Friday, September 20, 6-11 pm Saturday, September 21, 4-11 pm

Sunday, September 22, Noon-9 pm

The first thing we need to do is get those raffle books on the street so we have a hefty Super 50/50 jackpot in September! The books will be mailed out soon but, in the meantime, they are available at the rectory. Tickets are $2 a piece and there are 10 tickets to a book. Please have a few books on hand for summer gatherings — graduation parties, barbecues, block parties – we need to get that prize going! If anyone has BRAND new religious items to donate - rosaries, rosary bead cases, jewelry, statues, etc. - for our Religious article table we would sincerely appreciate that! But they must be brand new for us to sell. Call Gina: 973-751-4187, if you have any questions.

MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA OFFERING BLANKET

Several years ago, we introduced the “Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the

deceased, or is offered for a very special intention. On the 2nd Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for their intentions at 7:00 P.M. During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian Café for the entire 4 days. The presentation of the blanket will take place on Saturday evening, during the candlelight procession following the 7:00 PM Mass. If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you wish for the blanket. Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always, the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows. For more information, please call Gina Tamburri at 973-751-4187.

Many volunteers are needed to make our 21st Annual Italian Festival successful. If you would like to meet new people, form lasting friendships and have a lot of fun, consider giving a few hours of your time. In the meantime, if you would like to help out during the day arranging the garages,

shopping for supplies, taking inventory, or whatever else may arise, give Gina Tamburri a call as she can always use a helping hand! 973-751-4187.

TENT SPONSORS If you wish to sponsor a tent at the feast, the cost is $100.00. As you are aware, this booth sponsorship helps the parish pay the very costly rental fee of the tents. The committee has beautiful signboards that are placed in each tent with your name or company name on it. Thank you for your help.

Regarding Memorial Candles… Rather then mailing letters every month to those who have memorial candles in the Maria SS. Addolorata Chapel, Gina Tamburri has been gracious enough to call and remind people when their candle renewal is due. Some phone numbers are no longer in service and we are unable to reach those donors. In order to make this job even easier for Gina, I will attempt to list those candles which are up for renewal and save Gina the time of making the call. Pastor’s Desk, continued from page 2… QUESTION BOX Our Good Shepherd Academy school children ask many wonderful questions through their class question boxes. Here are some of the questions: If the 5th Commandment is, “You shall not kill,” why do we kill animals? When Jesus didn’t go back home with Mary and Joseph, wouldn’t that be disobeying his parents? How much can the Holy Spirit change in your life? Why do they call Jesus, “the Rabbi,” and what does it mean? God bless their inquiring minds! GOOD STEWARDSHIP A Word of Gratitude To Antonio & Anna Vacca who conducted the raffle of St. Anthony and St Pio statues on the feast of St Anthony; $120 profit was realized.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live.” By a curious coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situates us in community, and evokes a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life.

A REMINDER ABOUT APPROPRIATE SUMMER

ATTIRE AT MASS

Dressing for Mass is simply a matter of showing proper respect, not only for God, but for others around you. Remember the days

when we wore our “Sunday best,” our finest outfits, to Mass? Dress codes at Mass have certainly relaxed over the years. With the warm weather upon us, it is particularly important that we dress appropriately and modestly for Mass, so here are some rules to follow for modest and proper Mass attire during the summer months: ❀ Hemlines on dresses and skirts fall at or just above the knee ❀ Hemlines on shorts fall near the knee (no short-shorts) ❀ Shoulders and midriffs are covered ❀ Necklines are modest - not low-cut ❀ No beachwear - swimsuits with cover-ups for females, swim trunks for males ❀ No muscle tee-shirts ❀ No exposed undergarments.

Catholic social teaching covers a broad range of important issues. But among these, the teaching on abortion holds a unique place. Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia. There may be a legitimate diversity of opinion even among

Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not with regard to abortion and euthanasia. - Archbishop Levada, “Reflections on Catholics in Political Life and the Reception of Holy Communion”

NOMINATION FOR STEWARD OF THE MONTH

When deciding to nominate a person for the Steward of the Month Award, we should consider the following: The TIME that this person dedicates to parish activities, community events, personal time with

others in need of assistance, spiritual aid and/or companionship. The TALENT that this person offers to the parish and community, willingly and lovingly. The TREASURE this person offers to the parish and community. Has he or she accepted the divine call to extend God’s blessings on those less fortunate through personal sacrificial giving? These are important factors to consider when proposing a person for nomination. Often a prayer to the Holy Spirit is helpful, too, in discerning the name for nomination. Please fill out the nomination form and return it in an envelope marked “Stewardship Committee” to nominate a parishioner as Steward of the Month. ✄-------------------------------------------------------------------------
