This weekend we are instructed by Jesus to live out our Catholic
Faith by our worship at Mass, our devotions, and by serving our
fellow human beings. The Lord teaches us the importance of
serving our neighbor, and the poor in our midst.
Many Scripture scholars believe that Mark’s Gospel is the old-
est, since both Matthew and Luke (the two other authors of the
three synoptic Gospels) draw on Mark’s short and demanding
story of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. In the Col-
legeville Bible Commentary (Liturgical Press: 1992, Vincentian
Father Philip Van Linden tells us that the characteristics of
Mark’s Gospel are 1) He presents the human side of Jesus; 2)
He bases discipleship in trust in Jesus; and 3) He believes that
we take up Jesus’ Cup and Cross by serving others. Today we
read of twelve working-class men, fishermen, who give up their
lives to follow Jesus, trusting Him, unaware of the cost! Why did
they do it? Perhaps the questions raised in our Processional
Hymn, The Summons may give us a clue.

Amazing and informative talk! * There is Life in the Womb Archbishop Fulton Sheen is an absolutely brilliant speaker, and the topic of our culture of death is extremely important for our society to hear…I wish I had heard this talk years ago. Nothing is Impossible with God John Michael Talbot has been inspiring audiences around the world for decades with his music and message. At a time when so many people are discouraged, he delivers a message filled with encouragement and hope. This book will inspire you to live as a Catholic Christian with faith, hope and joy! We will always have hu-man problems of Church, civil government, the workplace, family relationships, and even ourselves. But Jesus says to us, “I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have con-quered the world.” (John 16:33) Nothing is Impossible with God is a journey through the life and teachings of one of the most incredible Catholic voices of our age. Join us as we take time to explore the many possibilities God provides us. A group of men are meeting at 7 pm every other Thursday to read & discuss this book. Meeting dates are 2/5, 2/19, 3/5 & 3/19. Meetings are one hour long. Contact Deacon Dare Dutter at [email protected] or call 446-0473.
Monday February 2nd, the Feast of the Presen-
tation of the Lord, is the World Day of Prayer
for Consecrated Life. On this day the Church
thanks God for the gift of the different forms of
consecrated life, and prays for an increase in
vocations to the consecrated life, so that the life
and witness of monks and nuns, religious broth-
ers and sisters, members of secular institutes,
hermits and consecrated virgins will continue to enrich our
Church.

Sign up Sunday for Small Christian Communities
next weekend! Please consider joining a small group. Groups will meet starting
the week of Ash Wednesday, February 18th, and will continue
every week for 6 meetings during the Lenten season. Small
groups are the ideal way to meet other parish members and to
deepen your understanding of the Catholic faith. No previous
knowledge is assumed: everyone will benefit from reading and
discovering new insights using the wise and entertaining words
of Joe Paprocki from Loyola Press. Small Group members share
their own life experiences and listen to others while considering
how the Catholic faith impacts their life.
Several parish members have generously offered to host a small
group either at church or in their home. Meetings are offered
evenings, daytime, or on the weekend. Stop by the sign-up table
after mass on Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1st, or
sign up online at www.holycrossdewitt.org

My hope is that more and more people will discover that the
peace we all yearn for is not just the work of governments, but
the task of each one of us. We can all become makers of peace.
We can do our part . . . (in) rediscovering a vision, a path of
hope for all humanity. Jean Vanier, L'Arche Founder
February’s Parish Service: February, 2015
Recently it was noted in this column that people with disabili-
ties are more likely to live in poverty than other demographic
group: in 2012, the poverty rate for people living with a disabil-
ity was 28.4%. That’s 4.3 million people living with a disabil-
ity—in poverty.
L’Arche is an international faith-based organization that
helps people with developmental disabilities to live in a family-
style setting with dignity and respect. There are four L’Arche
homes in Syracuse. To raise money needed to support their work,
L’Arche families make new candles out of old ones and then
they sell them. Another fund raiser for the organization is an an-
nual flower sale on Mother’s Day weekend at Shop City. In order
to help L’Arche homes raise the money they need to continue
their mission, Faith in Action will collect used candles next
month. If you have any unwanted candles that can be melted to
make a new ones, bring them to the basket in the gathering area
or in the box in the downstairs closet marked L’Arche Candle
Donation during the month of February.
