Holy Cross Catholic Church A community of disciples of Jesus Christ called to celebrate, proclaim, and share the love of God with all people. September 9, 2018 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Good People of Holy Cross, Everyone is aware of the many wild fires in California and throughout the West, and the floods in the East, and the terrible mudslides. Everyone is aware of our Church’s horrible criminal behavior and cover-ups. Children have lost their innocence because of these crimes and sins, and many of us have lost a piece of our hearts regarding our Church, our leadership and our focus on who is most importantpersons who are victims, or an institution. People have lost their lives, their homes and their possessions, and their confidence in the clergy. Loss, loss, loss. Last week I wrote of a bluebird sighting, so what could we tell people who have suffered great loss? What difference could a bluebird make in the midst of suffering and loss? What does prayer really mean when rivers of mud are pouring through the front door and flooding the kitchen, higher than the granite countertops? What good is prayer for our Church in crisis? All we ever learn in prayer is that we’re not in control and that we are not God. Only God is God and God’s grace is enough for all of us. A few years ago, my +Dad died of dementia. He lost his ability to communicate, remember, and be present, but never lost his smile and delight in living day by day. A sweet memory for all of us was when he would break out in song “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me!” (The only line he remembered, but oh, how he belted it out!). I hear his voice now as clearly as I did then, and believed beneath my Dad’s illness there was hope, and faith, and love. A bluebird on the birdfeeder is so lovely when you stop to look. Amazing grace, amazing grace, how lovely it is when we repent and believe in the Gospel. Fires, floods, accusations, mud, crime, sin will not prevail; God will make a way with God’s amazing grace! Fr. Working in St. Vincent’s Vineyard

Two Vincentians recently visited a client who was in an automobile accident, which caused her, hopefully a temporary disability. The client is a single parent of a young man who lives in another state at this time. At the time of the accident, the client was a driver for Uber and Lyft transportation services. The main assistance the young woman needed help with at this time was help with her August rent. We were able to help with a substantial amount toward her rent. She was also given the number of a Tucker association, a cooperation of local churches, Networks, which may be able to help her with an electric bill. Gratefully, the client also has family who are willing to help at this time. She was also given the name of Mercy Care, a satellite of St. Joseph Hospital, which may be of help with some dental needs. In addition, the client was given information regarding St. Martin dePorres’ food pantry. She was also referred to the St. Vincent DePaul Family Support Center, which will provide a shopping opportunity for additional groceries. The client was also given information on the Stephen’s Ministry at Holy Cross should she need additional support during her time of recovery. In July, through your generous contribution of $5800, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist 10 families including 9 children providing $320 in temporary lodging, $620 for utility and $4894 in rent. Thank you for your generosity and May God continue to bless you abundantly. Amen! The Ministry is reaching out for men and women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to our brothers and sisters in Christ. If you are interested, please email [email protected] for more details.
