UPCOMING EVENTS
Liturgical Ministers Needed!!
Liturgical Ministers are needed at our
Sunday 11:45am Mass.
If you would be willing and/or able to serve as a
Sacristan, Communion Minister or Lector
please call the Parish Office and talk to Kiley.
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
The Christmas season ended with a bang
last Sunday as we thanked our volunteers with
an appreciation dinner fit for a king. Over 100 people
who volunteered in 2017 attended this event and had a
great time feasting on fine cuisine and hearty drink. It
takes a lot of good and faithful people to make a good
and faithful parish. I believe that we are truly that kind
of parish and may we continue striving to be one. I
personally thank all of our volunteers for the goodness
you are to so many of God’s people. Without you, we
would not be in the good place that we are.
I want to thank our staff who worked hard and fast
and furiously to put this event on and make it a
memorable time for all who attended. A special ‘thank
you’ goes to the Quest Team members who were called
upon at the last minute to help with décor. Without
them, we would probably still be getting ready for the
party.
I want to introduce to you our new employee, Katline
Lopez who began last week. Please welcome Katline
as you see her in the office each afternoon. Beginning
this week, you may also see her in the late afternoon as
we begin extended office hours. To better serve you,
every Tuesday and Thursday, the office will be open
until 7 p.m. to assist in your needs.
In a week, I will be travelling to the east side of the
diocese with Bishop Cantú for the United In Ministry
kick-off dinners. For me, it will be like the movie “If
It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium” as we are at a
different parish each night with a full day of meetings
and other events. Our parish of Holy Cross is the host
for the hors d’oeuvres for the Las Cruces kick-off
dinner on Friday, February 2nd at the New Mexico Farm
and Ranch Heritage Museum at 6 p.m. Hope to see you
there. On a side note, we did reach our goal for UIM
this past year and will receive a small rebate. Thank
you very much to you who supported this important
cause.
Also on February 2nd, Fr. Joel Alméndras will be
arriving in Las Cruces. Fr. Joel is a retired priest who
will be living in the rectory with me and helping around
the area as needed. He is perfectly bilingual and that is
an important quality that will be appreciated by many to
whom he ministers.
This past week we returned to Ordinary Time after
an enjoyable Advent and Christmas season.
The Sunday Gospel will emphasize St. Mark during the
Sunday Masses of Ordinary Time. For instance,
today’s Gospel we hear in Mark about the first disciples
of Jesus and how their hearts were open to hearing the
truth and responding to it. May we do the same.
God bless you, Fr. Richard

Respect for Life
From our vantage point in the year 20018, we can
now see that the twentieth century was a time of
tremendous contrasts. The century ended with
millions liberated from enslavement to communism
and other ideologies of terror that marked the last 100
years. Yet the 20th century was among the most
barbaric periods in human history because millions of
babies were slaughtered from decriminalized
abortion. Call our “Respect for Life” couple from Holy
Cross Church: Kurt & Lucy Rathgeber

Does your group use a room in the Church or

If so it is time to come in and request it again
for the year.

Active Parishioner Status
We receive many requests from parishioners to qualify for weddings here, or to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at Holy Cross Parish. Part of that request is to be able to verify that a person is an “active member” of the Parish. Because of the na-ture of our congregation, it is difficult to know everyone.
An “active member” of the parish is one who: Is properly registered and on the parish
census Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and
Holy Days Participates in parish activities when
possible Uses the parish envelope provided
While assessments of an inquirer's status will be made individually, the above points are the main factors that will be considered in making that determination.
