    2011 ROYAL

    CHRISTOPHER JOHN TRAUTMAN 1957 - 2011

This is a tribute to an amazing man, a REAL MAN, and a unique and talented person, whose contribution to progress and success, has been an enduring benefit for so many of us. In fact all whose lives he has touched in so many different ways over the past 26 years.“Before elaborating on this, I would just like to fill in some of the dots relating the Chris’s formative years, to which few of us have been privy.

Born in Bulawayo, Chris’ introduction to Black and White cows started with his father being give two heifers in return for helping fix a neighbours’ tractor. From that pair he grew to a herd of 500 head of registered Frieslands on their farm in Kadoma. So the seed was sown.

Chris was a passionate and very talented sportsman and he excelled in every sporting code he played.

The bush war in Zimbabwe saw Chris enrol in the Police where he served his country in action. He was identified as being more combatant with a hockey stick, than a pistol, and was selected for the National Hockey Team. He captained the team with distinction for several years, and represented Natal in hockey after his migration south.

Chris joined Stock Owners in 1987 marketing Dairy animals. This post he filled with distinction, enthusiasm, and innovation and with his great people skills, and coupled with his knowledge as a good cow-man, he met and befriended many dairy farmers, the length and breadth of KZN, and indeed the whole country.

Chris’s trademark was true grit and determination. “A NEVER GIVE UP and DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE BEATEN.” The latter edict referred as much to not allowing a challenge to defeat him, as to not being beaten by others. A testimony to this attitude was borne out by a Silver Medal in a Comrades Marathon.

Chris had initiative which, coupled with his amazing organizational skills, made him the “go to man” and the man for all occasions. His planning was careful and precise, and his execution always meticulous. Whether the National Champs at the Royal, the on farm challenge, a sale in the platteland, his modus operandi was the same and the result a success.

As a strong proponent of Breed Improvement through performance testing and classification, Chris encouraged many farmers to persist with both disciplines, and coupled with the breeding advice and the genetics, has left an indelible mark in the Dairy Industry across ALL the Breeds.

The Dairy Industry has lost a giant and a gregarious one at that. Our challenge is to perpetuate the legacy, and to build on what one inimitable man was able to catalyse, in a mere two and half decades of selfless, tireless, and imaginative endeavour.

Chris’s absence will be all the more conspicuous because he always quietly got on with the job. The vacuum will only be felt when we ask the question – “who can we get to …….” His positive geniality, wry smile, mischievous expression and trademark suffix, “and what have you” will not longer be an everyday part of our lives, but the rich and proud memory of this Father, friend, colleague and mentor will endure.

Rest in peace Chris, the industry and all who knew you will miss your inimitable presence.”

    AGM & Information day – 24 & 25 May 2011

The AGM of the East Cape Holstein Club was held on the evening of the 24th of May, in Cradock. This was preceded by a visit to the Mooimelk Koeihotel of the Landman family just outside Cookhouse. We were impressed by the scale of the operation and the management and planning that goes into the running of a successful business like this.

During the AGM semen companies were given the opportunity to do a presentation on a selected Holstein bull. They also donated semen from these bulls, which was used in a lucky draw. The new committee as elected at the AGM is as follows:

Chairman Andrew MastersonVice Chairman Bull van RensburgSecretary Colette MastersonAdditional members Stephen Mains-Sheard Anton Bredell Charles Heathcote

The AGM was followed by a spitbraai and was enjoyed by all till late

The next morning a Holstein information day was held at the Wait & See herd of the Sieberhagen family. Various topics were discussed by Herman Duvenage as well as Cliff Harrington from Meadow Feeds, who was one of the sponsors for the event. John prepared two of his cows for practical demonstrations which created interactive discussions. The information day was followed by a lovely lunch to close off two very successful days.

We’d like to thank the Landman and Sieberhagen families for their hospitality and for accommodating the large group of visitors to their farms.
