Relax by the fire

The daunting winter weather is here and it is becoming hard-er to find the motivation to suit up and go trudging through the snow. After a long day, all you can think about is curling up in the warmth of your home and enjoying a relaxing moment by the fire.

Sounds like the picture per-fect setting. Now, if only you had the picture perfect fire-place to go along with this tempting vision. A trip to Erb’s Stove Center sounds like the perfect shopping destination as winter’s cold sets in for good.

Ed Erb started the business from his home in Sugarcreek in 1982. “There was a need for appliances in the Amish com-munity and we just grew from there,” explained Duane Erb, Ed’s son and store manager.

Duane Erb started working for the family business in 2000. “Dad still continues to do the installs and repairs,” he said.

In 1990, Erb’s Stove started incorporating patio furniture

into its inventory to attract more business during the summer months. Around the same time, it added fireplaces to become more diversified, Duane Erb said.

In 1996, the business relocat-ed to Berlin, close to Hiland High School and then to its current location, (just east of Berlin on state Route 39) in 2007.

Along with everyday appli-ances such as kitchen stoves and refrigerators, Erb’s Stove carries a variety of wood-burn-ing, gas and electric fireplaces and stoves. Choose from beau-tifully hand-crafted wood and stone set fireplaces.

“We specialize in custom mantels. Customers can pick the wood and stain they like,” said Duane Erb. “It’s very important for us to be able to offer that to people.”

School gets rooftop HVAC recommendationThe Building and

Grounds Committee for the Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center Board of Education rec-ommended the board begin a project this sum-mer to replace part of the school’s aging rooftop heating, ventilating and air conditioning units.

Plans presented by main-tenance supervisor Joe Bowman at the board’s regular meeting Jan. 15, call for using permanent improvement levy funds to replace three of six units that serve academic class-rooms, three program class areas, Adult Education and administrative offices.

Bowman said the three HVAC units that will be removed will be used for parts to repair the other three until they are replaced in probably two to five years. The cost of the first half of the project is estimated at $450,000.

Committee member Rick Ewing, who repre-sents the Ashland City School Board, said it is a matter of replacing the units as they hit their 20-year life expectancy rather than wait until one of them totally breaks down and officials have to scramble to replace it.

The project also will allow officials to address con-trol problems in several rooms.

“It will give us a head start on some potential problems down the road and also frees up dollars to address those things that people really notice and will improve the com-fort of individual spaces,” Ewing said.

Officials now will take the recommendation to Comfort Control, a Rich-field energy consulting firm, to determine wheth-er to buy and install the

March 22 at Hotel Mill-ersburg. Performance reg-istration is at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Actors must be ages 18 and older.

Admission is a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $3 for students. Per-formers are free.

The event is sponsored by the Killbuck Valley Writ-ers’ Guild. For more infor-mation call 330-464-0624.

equipment through the regu-lar bid process or use one of two other procurement alter-natives.

In other business, Superinten-dent Mike McDaniel told the board he is working to devel-op support from area industry for an Advance Manufactur-ing program that could be a pilot in the 2016 school year. Under the program, students would take technical training in the sophomore and junior years and move into coopera-

tive placement or apprentice-ships at area businesses in their senior year.

McDaniel said the program is an outgrowth of an effort to develop a regional manufactur-ing coalition to match training with available jobs.

“We think we’re moving into a situation where it would be wise to support an initiative to form a manufacturing coali-tion for employers to attract the prepared employee to their employment opportunities,” he said. “We have a need to be responsive in terms of our

programming and as we work with local employers here, we have come to the conclusion it would be a value to everyone to speed up the launching of a new advance manufacturing program.”

In addition to Ashland and Holmes counties, McDaniel said he is working with officials and employers from Medina and Wayne counties to develop a multi-county initiative.

The board also approved a general fund tax planning bud-get totaling nearly $5.4 million for fiscal 2016, which starts July

1. The figure includes over $2.5 million in estimated property tax revenue and more than $2.7 million in estimated state edu-cational funding.

Treasurer Julie Smith noted 2015 is the final year for a 1-mill operating levy that pro-vides a significant portion of local dollars. The board has until Aug. 5 to put a renewal on the November ballot.

Smith said officials also are looking to refinance bonds that paid for past energy sav-ing equipment retrofit projects. She said current interest rates

are nearly 2 percent lower than the 4.67 percent annual interest on the current bonds.

The board also held its annu-al organizational meeting just before its regular January meeting — electing West Hol-mes School District represen-tative Dave Kick as president and Mapleton Local School District representative Tom Donley as vice president. The board also voted to continue to hold regular meetings on the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in the board meeting room.

Mark1.1-20

In many towns there exist havens for the hungry…shelters providing nourishing meals for those who, for various reasons, are unable to nourish themselves. A house of worship is often the provider of this nourishment; a shelter for hungry spirits, where all are welcomed and encouraged. Life is not always fair; giving help to those in need is more than physically filling; it fills the spirit with hope. God has promised in Matthew 5.6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” As the New Year begins, visit our Father’s sanctuary and experience the sustenance only He can provide.

selection of outdoor room accessories, from grills and stoves, to furniture and fire pits. The store also can hook custom-ers up with a landscaping crew to design a patio.

Duane Erb said the fam-ily transitioned from wood outdoor furniture to poly vinyl furniture because of its growing popularity, low maintenance and easy cleaning. A propane refill station is available for fill-ing up RVs and grill tanks.

Also in the summer, Erb’s Stove offers a Sum-mer Preventative Mainte-nance check of stoves and furnaces. “We clean and service all the products we

sell,” said Duane Erb.“It’s very important to

us to give the customers a great experience when they come here. Being able to customize things for customers is impor-tant. You can’t find that everywhere,” he said.

With more than 6,000 square feet of showroom space, almost every inch is filled with stoves and fire-places of every style and size. Corner wood-burning stoves might bring custom-ers to reminisce of their grandparents’ old buck stove that used to sit in the corner of the old farm-house. Massive wall fire-places with stone and wood details could bring so much character and coziness to

the family room.If you can’t find exactly

what you are looking for in the showroom, talk with one of the staff members. They can help customize a piece or they may have it in the 5,000 square-foot ware-housing facility out back.

A spring sale is held every April and an anni-versary sale takes place in September.

Even if you are not in the market for a new stove or fireplace, simply “come in and enjoy the fireplaces burning,” said Duane Erb.

Erb’s stove is located 4100 State Route 39, Millersburg. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For more informa-tion call 330-893-3903.

Erb’s’

Stoves of every style and size are available at Erb’s Stove Center. All the accessories needed to keep the fires roar-ing and the chimney flues clean can be purchased at the store.

Pomerene Board welcomes new surgeon to staffThe Pomerene Board

of Trustees welcomed the newest member of the hospital surgical staff at the January board meet-ing.

Dr. Art Maldonado has joined the staff as a gen-eral surgeon. He is a New Jersey Medical School graduate, earned a PhD in molecular developmental biology from University of Cincinnati, and com-

pleted his general surgery residency at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, and did his fellowship in surgical critical care at Orlando Regional Medi-cal Center.

“Not very often does a physician on a recruit-ing trip ask business type questions,” Hospital Chief Executive Officer Tony Snyder said. “He asked those questions and I thought they were good questions for any physi-cian to ask. I thought it

was important for him to see this group here, all from the community, that meets every month and is our ultimate oversight.”

“The hospital I came from really taught me the importance of gover-nance,” Maldonado said. “Once I found out that this hospital is a top per-former in many different categories, I pretty much fell out of my chair. It is amazing that a 40-bed hospital had this much power to give great care

to patients.“It struck me meeting all

the department heads that you have an all-star team, and that’s a credit to you, the leadership, that you’ve been able to bring such wonderful people to this hospital,” he added. “You have such a great team, great chemistry amongst colleagues, and I’d be hon-ored if this worked out for me.”

“Art and his wife joined us a couple Fridays ago for the employee banquet,”

Snyder said. “They were good enough to drive up and join us for that eve-ning, and I think it was a pretty good time.”

“If there is anything we can do as a board to help you with this process, we have our local Chamber of Commerce director on board here who would be more than happy to show your wife around the com-munity,” board President Dan Mathie said. “Shasta is quite the tour guide.”

“I was practicing my

Dutch with the pharma-cist, and I heard from out of visual range, ‘That’s all wrong’ and I look over and there’s a patient say-ing ‘No, no, no.’ My wife makes fun of my Span-ish accent when I speak English,” Maldonado said. “My Dutch is going to be horrible.”

But he assured everyone that he is willing to learn.

In other business, the board approved the pur-

Chief Financial Officer

Jason Justus also presented a financial review of the fourth quarter at the hospi-tal that showed net revenue up for the quarter.

Nicole Kolacz, chief nurs-ing officer of Pomerene, provided a quality update to the board regarding the QA/PI requirements. The hospital must estab-lish, implement and main-tain an effective program that assesses the quality and safety of its services, identify opportunities for

improvement and work to address those opportunities.

Data must be aggregated, analyzed and reported into Pomerene’s QA/PI Pro-gram to identify oppor-tunities for improvement and understand why those opportunities exist, and develop and implement actions to address oppor-tunities and determine the success of those actions.

Winter instincts draw her to eating, sleepingI get sleepy in the win-

ter. Some may argue it’s grouchiness, some may argue it’s the winter blues. My husband often tells me to go stand in the sunlight or hop on a plane to Flori-da because he nearly can’t stand my constant moping around that begins after the holidays and ends by St. Patty’s Day.

But I’ve got another theory. I think I’m just tired. All the time. And it’s not my fault.

If given the chance, I probably would forego the alarm clock completely and spend what few wak-ing hours I would have

in sweat pants and fleece sweatshirts eating foods that are extremely high in fat content and salt.

My grandmother’s chick-en noodle soup, for exam-ple, that when left over in the refrigerator becomes a solid gelatinous mass of deliciousness, would be a perfect food. Also, beef jerky and anything having to do with potatoes and

cheese.These terrible habits —

the eating and sleeping — is what gets me through the winter.

It’s almost as if I am an animal.

But wait — I sort of am.Although frequently

debated, biologically speaking humans are mammals and mammals are animals and all ani-mals live where they do because of their special adaptations for their envi-ronment. Any elementary science book will tell you the same thing.

When the weather gets cold, animals have a few

choices as to how to get through the winter. They can migrate to warmer climates, like birds and retirees who are fortunate enough to be able to do so. They can adapt, like deer who grow extra fur and fat, and also like my husband who likes a full bushy beard from hunting season onward.

They can hibernate, like the groundhog whose body temperature drops to 37 degrees and breathes only two-three times per minute. Other animals go into a type of dormancy called torpor, which sounds pretty amaz-

ing to me.In torpor, animals such

as bears (yep, you heard me, they don’t actually hibernate) and skunks go into a state of mental and physical inactivity. While true hibernation is based on length of daylight, torpor is based on the temperature. So if it gets really cold, they just go to bed and sleep. They don’t have do any thinking, like calculating shopping bills or helping with algebra.

Torpor can last for a day, a few days, or more, but eventually when the sun randomly shines, animals will wake up and venture

out to find a snack, head to the restroom, check sports scores and post updates on their Facebook pages.

I can’t find a single thing wrong with torpor.

When winter hits and there’s a sunny day, there’s no place I’d rather be than out and about, playing in it. But when the mercury falls, I want to be snug as a skunk in a rug. And if someone wants to bring me a pot of gelati-nous chicken noodle soup, even better.

Just ignore my beard.Stop by and say hi at www.

House guest ignores standards of good behaviorAdmittedly, we’ve had

very few house guests over the years. Of those, some have been relatives, and some friends, but

most have been the teen-aged pals of our children. The latter tend to arrive three, four, even eight at

a time and proceed to cre-ate an atmosphere of gen-eral madness.

Cranked on high-fruc-tose corn syrup and hor-mones they laugh, yap and thump their way through the night until finally (and thankfully) one-by-one their young pancreases begin to surrender. Before noon the next day each returns to his or her own abode with a ragged voice, droopy eyes and a raging case of sleep deprivation psychosis.

Yet, as loud and crazy as it’s ever gotten, none of our house guests has ever beaten up my cat, terror-ized my dogs or peed on my belongings — until now!

Our outdoor cat, El Gato, actually was more of an “invited menace” than a house guest. He’d lived under our roof before,

enjoying such feline-pleasing luxuries as sunny windowsills, warm carpet underfoot, and an indoor “sandbox” in which to create tiny sculptures; but the indoor life also carried a heavy burden of good behavior.

In El Gato’s own words, “There were places where you simply couldn’t BE without some crazy lady screaming and chasing you around with a squirt bottle filled with this god-awful lemony crap. Gosh sakes, lady, it’s a coun-tertop not an operating table!”

In her own defense, the resident “crazy lady”, my wife, Kristin, points out the fact that each time El Gato was “actively dis-couraged from commit-ting banned behaviors” he would act out in one way or another.

His typical modus ope-randi would be to back up to something important-looking and “tag” it with his own liquid graffiti.

It was a war of wits and wills but ultimately the creature with the larger brain and the opposable thumbs (thus the ability to open and close doors) won out.

Still, ever the compas-

A celebration in pink on a Saturday afternoonA new baby girl is

expected to be born into our family early in March. It will be the first baby for my granddaughter and her husband. And so a baby shower to honor her and her mother was held last weekend. Everything was

beautifully decorated in pink. A good-sized crowd was on hand, from a few months of age into the 80s. There was a lot of noise and happy chatter among the gals who attended. Many do not see each other except at gatherings like this, so it is an oppor-

tunity to catch up on what has been happening with everyone’s family. A light lunch of soup, sandwiches and cake was enjoyed by all and then it was time for the “baby shower games.”

It doesn’t seem to mat-ter what kind of shower is being held, there are always games that must be played. I don’t get very excited about shower games, but even they can sometimes be educational.

In playing the “baby ani-mal name game” I learned that a baby swan is called a cygnet, a baby fish is a fingerling or fry, a baby pigeon is a squab, and a baby frog is a polliwog or tadpole. Needless to say, I did not win the prize for getting the most right. I completely missed the number of M&M’s that a baby bottle will hold. I did better on the word scram-ble that was all about baby things.

Then it was time to open the large array of gifts. There are so many different things available these days to aid mothers in caring for their babies and just about all of them were given. I can’t help

but wonder how moth-ers of my generation got their kids raised without all these new and mod-ern things! My kids were bathed in just a plain plastic tub, there was no “Fisher Price My Little Lamb Calming Vibra-tion Tub.” Car seats didn’t exist, so when you had to go somewhere you just laid the baby on the seat beside you. If you sudden-ly had to hit the brakes, you flung your right arm out and held the baby in place. That reflex became so automatic that if you had to make a quick stop in their teenage years they just automatically got hit in the chest by your right arm. There were no baby

monitors back then, but most babies had healthy lungs, and you heard them when they needed atten-tion. Throw away diapers hadn’t been invented, so a necessary item was a dia-per pail for soaking dirty diapers. Getting them washed nice and white again could be a chal-lenge, especially if your child couldn’t wear any-thing soaked in water with Clorox added. I didn’t dare use it on anything my youngest son wore or he looked like a constant case of the measles. Dreft was always advertised as being the best and mildest wash-ing soap for baby clothes.

There are usually a cou-ple “special gifts” at baby showers, and so it was this day. One was the special blanket crocheted by a cousin of mine, who over the years has made so many sweater sets and blankets for members of the family. The other was a beautiful handmade quilt with tiny cowboy boots on it. Those special handmade gifts are always treasured over the years and often passed on to future generations.

This baby will grow up to be a “farm girl” and will probably love horses, red tractors, dogs and cows,

just like her mother. She received a cute pair of pink cowboy boots and Car-hartts to grow into. She will be so loved and probably just a little spoiled by grand-parents, great-grandparents

and family. There were so many nice gifts at the show-er for this new baby, all an expression of the love and caring of the friends and family. We are all anxiously waiting for Emily to arrive!

W. Holmes Vo-ag holds lock-in West Holmes FFA Chap-

ter held its annual Green-hand Lock-in Nov. 14 at West Holmes High School.

Members checked in before the seniors and officers started the intros and icebreakers to get better acquainted with one another. After having groups rotate and do ice-breakers, the officers and seniors performed a Parlia-mentary Procedure demo to the Greenhands. Later, everyone gathered for a game of dodgeball before rotating through stations to teach Greenhands about the importance of the contests, the fruit sale, trips and camps and classroom activities.

FFA trivia tested the knowledge that the Green-hands have learned so far in Ag. Two groups worked together in a team building activity to make a passage-way for a robotic bug to make its way into the barn. After the activity, everyone ate pizza before electing the Greenhand officers. Those elected were: Presi-dent, Cade Patterson; vice president, Regina Miller; historian, Jarrett Snow; sec-retary, Alyx Morris; student adviser, Whitney Miller;

treasurer, Thane Kaufman; reporter, Marissa Lamp, and sentinel, John Maki.

State officers Mandy Tay-lor, Caroline Miller and Alex Miller presented a workshop on team building and building a positive rela-tionship with those around you. Greenhands then went through more chapter work-shops before playing glow-in-the-dark tag in the gym. Greenhands made their own shirts to wear on initia-tion day. Everyone had the opportunity to play football,

euchre and cornhole. Chap-ter sessions helped explain the importance of the things FFA does. After chapter sessions, it was time to play minute to win it games. This was a team building activ-ity and a fun way for the Greenhands to bond and get to know one another better. Members enjoyed basketball, line dancing or board games before the offi-cial dress relay. The night’s activities finished up with euchre and cornhole before watching a movie.

Greenhands were told about the importance of the contests, the fruit sale, trips and camps and classroom activities at the lock-in held recently at West Holmes High School.

Interestingly, nearly all of the “important-looking things” in the basement (bicycles, camping gear, power tools) belong to ME so Kristin’s sacrifice has been minimal.

Perhaps the biggest loser in all of this is my beloved indoor cat, Moses, who has had to bunk in the base-ment — on account of a single litter box — with Mr. Bad Behavior himself. His world (and vast por-tions of mine) may never

Nice neighborly chat at site of new homeWe are one step closer

to moving again. Last week was the pre-dry wall inspection with our builder. This was to go over where all the electrical and plumbing is located and make any changes before the insulation and dry wall-ing takes place. That part will take place this week.

We already had been out to the site at Del Webb so many times before the official meeting, so there were no surprises. The Man of the House took his tape measure along because he

was feeling the garage was longer than our current one. He was pleased to learn it is three feet longer. That will give him more wall space for his shelving to store his artist supplies and other manly items.

There are five houses going up on our street in very close proximity so we will all be moving in around the same time. We met the couple who will be our next-door neighbors. They happened to show up late one Sunday afternoon at the same time we did.

Jerry and Marcia are from Kansas and have a little dog that looks like a fox.

We did not meet the dog, but that’s how they described it. We hope their dog and Shiloh will become best friends since our houses are something

like 10 feet apart. (We also hope their dog is not a barker.) The couple has one adult son and no grandchildren. They said they might like to borrow some of ours since we have 12.

We’ve had our current house off the market for the last month. It has been nice not having to rush around and clean every time the phone rang to say there was to be a showing. Especially over the holi-days and last week when the Strong family kids were all home and we had so many events going on.

Now they have all returned to their respective places and things are quiet again. We are putting the house back on the market on Groundhog Day. That way, if someone wants to buy it we should be able to

stay here and move right into our new home in a somewhat leisurely fash-ion. I have it all planned in my mind.

The Man of the House is in charge of the actual move. He has been pricing trucks. At any rate it will be much less expensive than our move from Ohio to South Carolina. I like the fact we will not have to carefully box up all of the breakable items.

That takes a long time and a lot of boxes and newspapers and bubble wrap. I will be able to put a bunch of stuff in a clothes basket, drive the 12 miles to our new home, put things away and come back for another load.

I have a few more household hints for you that came from a very old book:

1. It is best to leave bird droppings alone until they dry, then brush off.

2. A tablespoon of ammonia to 1 quart of water makes a fine solu-tion for sponging shiny spots on clothes. Use a thick wet cloth for press-ing. (Does anyone still do this?)

3. Gold picture frames are best cleaned by going over them with a brush dipped in alcohol. Brush with light strokes. (Who has gold picture frames?)

4. Chopped dates mixed with apples in an apple pie will offer a pleasant surprise. (Or an unpleasant one if you hate dates.)

5. After oiling your sew-ing machine, sew through a blotter to absorb any cell oil before sewing your material. (Do they still make blotters?)

Sportsmen voice concerns over deer numbers to DOW

AKRON — At a cross-roads, The Ohio Division of Wildlife is reaching out for help in the manage-ment of the state’s white-tail deer population.

This past Saturday across the state, the DOW held five deer summits to listen to the outdoorsmen and women, and to inform them on deer herd condi-tion trends, the transition to deer management units, and to update sportsmen on the department’s effort in the fight against Chron-ic Wasting Disease.

And because the largest number of sportsmen pre-registered for the sum-mit at the District Three headquarters in Akron, the state’s top deer biolo-gist, Dr. Mike Tonkovich, drove all the way from Athens to address the group of concerned deer hunters.

And, it was a room of

passionate people who aren’t happy with the cur-rent state of deer hunting in Ohio.

To open the summit, moderator Susie Vance had everyone in atten-dance introduce them-selves and tell why they were there. From indi-viduals representing hunt-ing clubs, to taxidermists, farmers, fathers and sons, the general consensus was concern.

Included in the com-ments from the room were:n The ODNR is not lis-

tening to hunters. What happened to all our deer?n I’m concerned with

the deer damage permits you guys issue.n I’m a taxidermist, and

this is the worst year I’ve had in years.n You guys work for us,

we’re the license buyers.n I’m not seeing deer,

and it’s difficult to pass on our hunting tradition when we take our kids out hunting and they’re not seeing any deer.n If you want to carry on

the tradition of hunting, you have to have a good deer herd. n Our Farmers and

Hunters Feeding the Hun-gry donations are down, and as a result, we have a lot of hungry people.n Deer farms — why

can’t they keep their deer in the fences?n The ODA has dropped

the ball (in response to the Ohio Department of Agriculture now oversee-ing deer farms). n I’m concerned with

the tagging system….it’s made it a lot easier for people on the fence to get

away with (cheating).n We’ve got way too

many coyotes. I’d like to see a bounty on them.n Is there any chance the

state can put food plots on government land?n Does fracking have

anything to do with (our poor) deer hunting?n The lack of deer is sad

to see in this great state.“I couldn’t be happier

to have this discussion of deer numbers, even if it’s negative,” said Tonkovich.

The DOW’s deer project leader then told the crowd that a revision to the deer management goal is in the works, and sportsmen will have a big say in where it goes from here.

“We’re going to ask you where should the deer population be?” he said.

“We’re going to send out a random survey to those who bought a hunting license or deer permit in June or July. We’re send-ing out 40,000 surveys, and the question is how many will we get back?”

Tonkovich noted that there is no right answer to the number of deer in Ohio.

“Everybody in this room has a different answer,” he said.

And while someone in the crowd noted that low deer numbers is not just an Ohio issue, that harvest totals are down in a lot of states, Tonkovich said that didn’t matter to his staff.

“We collect data to make the best decisions we can. I don’t care about Iowa, Wisconsin or Illinois,” he said.

CWD UPDATE — District Three Wildlife manager Scott Peters addressed the crowd on the DOW’s plan to monitor Chronic Wast-ing Disease, after a deer at a Holmes County high-fence hunting preserve was discovered to have the disease this past fall. Peters noted that Ohio has checked for CWD in the state’s wild population since 2002, and that cur-rently 19 states, including bordering Pennsylvania and West Virginia, have had CWD outbreaks in the wild herd.

During his PowerPoint presentation, Peters showed where hunters are from that have harvested deer from Holmes County

in the last three years, and it not only spreads to over half of the counties in Ohio, but to several states as well. That information is easily accessed, thanks to the new checking sys-tem.

The point is, deer car-casses have moved throughout the state and nationally from Holmes County, which concerns the DOW. So, steps have been taken to minimize the potential spread of CWD.

“A crow feeding on a car-cass can transfer (CWD) prions,” said Tonkovich. “Any scavenger can.”

Peters said his depart-ment is going door to door to get as many samples of deer in Holmes County as possible, including those taken on damage permits, road kill and during the hunting season. When it’s all said and done, he hopes to have 325 deer samples from the eight townships within a six-mile radius of ground zero to check them for CWD.

“We’ve also made a dili-gent effort to remove ear-tagged deer in the wild,” said Peters, noting eight of those such deer have been checked for CWD. “We hope to sample enough deer to know that there’s no CWD in the wild deer herd.”

With the recent snow cover, the DOW did an aerial survey in Holmes County and estimated the current deer population in the eight townships at 3,500.

No losers in girls matchup of No. 1 Div. III, IV teamsDOYLESTOWN —

There have been many great moments in area girls basketball history, but none quite like the top-ranked tussle at Chippewa Monday night.

As far as regular-season games go, it would be hard to argue there was ever a bigger local contest than Chippewa’s 49-38 win over visiting Hiland in the first matchup between No. 1-ranked Associated Press boys or girls teams in area history.

On top of that, both teams were unbeaten and led by coaches who are members of the 500-win club.

The excitement and intensity in the gym was palpable and the game lived up to the hype. Chippewa didn’t pull away until going on an 11-2 third-quarter run, which broke open a game that it led only 26-21 at the half in front of a standing-room-only crowd of around 1,000.

Twenty-eighth-year Chippewa coach Denny Schrock had the flu so badly that he might have sat out any other regular-season game, but he wasn’t about to miss this one. Afterward, Schrock looked exhausted, but you could see in his eyes how proud he was of the show both teams put on.

“The atmosphere in this gym for two No. 1 teams in the state of Ohio, from the same area, was amazing,” said Schrock, whose No. 1-ranked Div. III team improved to 17-0. “What it did for girls basketball speaks volumes.

“(Hiland coach) Dave (Schlabach) and I said to each other before the game that it was going to be a win-win situation for us both with the way we looked at it.

“I’m glad it really was a win and win for me.”

The Chipps showed fans that not only do they have height, but that their girls are extremely quick all over the floor as they harassed shooters from Hiland (15-1, ranked No. 1 in Div. IV) and completely shut down the paint.

No one stood taller than 6-foot-1 Chipps junior Ashley Richardson, who led all players with 20 points. Sophomore Taylor

Richards (6-0) added nine points, while seven different girls scored in the balanced attack.

“At first it was very nerve-wracking, but once you get out there, it’s just a lot of excitement,” Richardson said. “It’s definitely nice to know the community is behind us and we have all the support from the students.

“I know this will definitely help us when it comes to the tournament.”

Presale tickets allotted to Chippewa and Hiland were sold out soon after going on sale for the Chipps’ tiny 875-seat gym. Some longtime community members said it was the first sellout since the late Terry Dennison coached the boys team from 1981-1991.

Despite suggesting that fans carpool, there were even fewer parking spaces. A good number of people had to park at

the nearby middle school and be shuttled over to the gym.

Tracy Bailey, whose

husband, Jeff Bailey (CHS class of 1987), played for Dennison, said it felt like the old days — only this time it was a girls game that packed the Chipps’ gym.

“When we would come to boys games back then, there would be cars parked on Valley View, Coal Bank and it was crazy like this,” said Tracy, whose son Zach plays for the boys team. “I think it’s good for this town.”

There’s no telling how many more fans might have attended if the game had been moved to a bigger gym, but everyone connected with Chippewa High School and the team agreed it should stay in their gym.

Chipps athletic director Drew Conyers, a 2002 graduate of the school, said Hiland was given 200 presale tickets. Both schools made sure that family members of the players had the first opportunity to get seats.

“This is something where our community deserves to have it as a home game,” said Conyers, of what might have been the first girls game in Wayne County to sell out. “We wanted

to play it here, it’s a home-court advantage and you don’t get many opportunities to host something like this. We were pretty adamant about keeping it here.”

The architects of the night were 500-win club coaches Schlabach and Schrock. The latest in a long line of hard-working girls they’ve coached are carrying out their plans this season.

Neither Schrock nor Schlabach could have imagined the basketball programs they would build, but both are glad they’ve spent their careers coaching girls.

Schlabach just wanted to coach and he got his foot in the door as a Hiland Junior High girls bench boss in the 1980s. He quickly moved up the JV and then the varsity in 1991-92.

Now, girls basketball wouldn’t seem the same without Schlabach leading the Hawks’ small-school powerhouse.

“We have a community with a great work ethic No. 1, but then girls tend to be great listeners,” Schlabach said. “I have always had kids that work hard and they’ve wanted to learn.

“In the girls game, skill level still matters. You don’t have to just be an athlete and have great size. If you can dribble, pass and shoot you can still have success. That part of it I enjoy.”

Schlabach, no doubt, will use last night’s game as a big teaching moment. He said the environment was awesome, starting with 200 people lined up to get in when his team arrived at 4:30 p.m.

The Hawks coach lamented that he just didn’t have enough players step up once the game started.

“We had to play extremely well to win this game and we did not do that,” Schlabach said.

Schrock used to keep the scorebook at the girls games in the 1970s, but when his best friend, Ed Noviac, stepped down to become the football coach he took over the girls team in 1979-80.

“It was relatively a new situation when I got involved with it, as far as excitement for girls basketball and at Chippewa,” Schrock said.

“At this time, I just like bringing the young ladies along and hopefully they get better skill-wise and become productive citizens.”

While the Hawks may have gone home disappointed, there were no losers on this night.

Both teams received excellent learning experiences for the fast-approaching postseason, where both could advance to Columbus. And, girls basketball was showcased in a spotlight fans far and wide could appreciate.

SPORTS FANS!Glenn Carano had a modest six-year career

as a backup QB with Dallas in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Likewise David Humm – 10 years as a backup QB with the Raiders and the old Baltimore Colts. But their single shared experience made NFL history. Each quarterback started only one game in his entire career, and it just happened to be against each other. Of thousands of NFL games played, this was the only time two QBs making their one and only starts faced each other. Dallas won, 37-13.

The 2014 college football season was indeed historic, but in ways other than the obvious first-ever playoffs. The sport’s oldest continuous rivalry – Lehigh and Lafayette – played at a neutral site (Yankee Stadium) to commemorate their 150th meeting, which Lafayette won 27-7. Over at MIT, the football team had won just 80 games from 1944-2013, which is exactly as many Nobel Prize winners as the school produced in those 70 years. But in 2014 the Engineers (of course) went a perfect 8-0.

College football history was made through the air as well in 2014. In October, Cal and Washington State combined for the most passings yards ever in a single game – 1,261 – 734 by State’s Connor Halliday, breaking the mark of 716 posted in 1990 by Houston’s David Klinger. At Kansas State, receiver Tyler Lockett set school records for career catches and touchdowns. The player whose marks he broke – his father, Kevin, who established them more than two decades earlier.

Solar installation cutting costs at Swiss Valley Fence

Swiss Valley Fence Ltd., the oldest fencing compa-ny in the area meeting the needs of its clients since 1981, is now generating 81 percent of its annual electricity needs through the use of a recent solar installation.

“They have an ideal setup for solar, ade-quate roof space, ideal slope, shade free for the high production time of day,” explains Sheldon Stutzman, solar consul-tant from Paradise Ener-gy Solutions. “By covering such a large percentage of their electric bill, Swiss Valley Fence is guarding themselves against elec-tric rate hikes, and can relax knowing that the bulk of their long-term energy costs are protect-

ed from the volatility of the energy market.”

The 24.3 kilowatt solar installation consists of 81 solar panels and is expected to produce 25,960 kilowatt hours of clean energy every year. After 4.7 years, the solar system will have paid for itself, and is expected to produce electricity for another 20-plus years. Over 30 years, Swiss Val-ley Fence expects to save close to $100,000 in elec-tricity costs.

With a visible loca-tion on state Route 39, the attractively installed solar array will also show that solar is attainable for local businesses.

“When we considered the option of solar, Joe Hershberger, Swiss Val-

ley Fence General Man-ager said, “the tax cred-its, overhead cost sav-ings and the long-term investment benefit with a short ROI, it really just made sense. It is also a way to utilize the clean renewable energy from the sun each and every day.”

“Taking the time to understand the num-bers, hearing how solar has benefited other busi-nesses in the area made this a clear choice,” com-mented Jeff Mullet, CFO for SVF.

“Renewables are catch-ing people’s eyes. We have had a few people stop by our business that may have otherwise con-tinued down the road,” he said.
