SIGNIFICANCE Briefly state historical andlor architectural imponance (include dates, events. and persons associated with the site.)

Hidden by trees and shrubs, the white-spired church on Argyle is a religious insti- tution with its roots in the entertainment industry. Southern evangelical preacher,, Dr. William Hogg came to Hollywood in 1932. With the idea that radio would be an ex- cellent medium for his message, he began a program on KFAC. "The Country Church of Hollywood" proved so successful that Dr. Hogg, with the aid of volunteers, builE an actual country church on this site. Rev. Hogg, or "Parson Josiah Hopkins" as he was known, made daily national broadcasts until his death in 1937. The'program was con- tinued by his wife until 1956. The nondenomingtional church has a membership of several hundred, holding regular services under the guidance of the Hoggs' daughter. It is a favorite for weddings, and a landmark on ~ r ~ ~ l e north of ~oll~wood ~oulevard.

One of the "rare" pre-1905 houses of Hollywood. this structure has had a Colonial Revival addition as its orientation changed from Hollywood Boulevard to Bronson Avenue. Originally, the home of local citizen, J.C. Newitt, this home has survived the commerciaX development of the Boulevard. An early Colonial Revival, this structure combines the verticality of the Victorian era with that of the newer more simplified Oolonial style.

7b. Briefly describe the prarentphy~uldescriprion of tho site or structure and describe any major alterations from i ts original condition:

A nearly unaltered example of the commercial vernacular of the first decades of the twentieth century. this is a two story brick, utilitarian structure. It is a mere two bays wide on its street elevation. Two large segmented arch openings, topped by bulls-eye windows are in the lower story bays. Keyshones and moldings accent the openings, which contain a wood-framed storefront on the north and a . recessed pedestrian and vehicular entrance on the south. Pilasters frame each floor, interrupted by a brackeaed cornice between stories. Six-oved-six double hung windows appear in each upper story Ley. Atme a stringcourse and plaster frieze, the original cornice has been removed. A vintage, non-working neon sign is appended to the facade.

The Hollywood Auto Transfer and Storage Building is significant as the most intact reminder of the historic function and archi- tecture of Cahuenga Boulevard. Always the primary access route to the San Fernando Valley via 'the Cahuenga Pass, Cahuenga developed in the teens and twenties as a service street containing numerous gas stations, garages, and public storage facilities. Several such structures were erected on this block. including the Hollywood Storage Building, the.Tick Tock Restaurant (originally a garage), and the building now housing Bob Smith Volkswagen. Typically these buildings were brick, with classical building elements such as cornices and moldings added for disti
