General InformationDate & Time: The sale will begin at 1:00 p.m. MST on February 24, 2011.

Location: The sale will be held at the Blume Ranches sale barn near Castor, AB. Blume Ranches is located 5 miles east of Castor and 3 ½ miles north. Castor is located 180 miles north and east of Calgary or 150 miles south and east of Edmonton. Both Calgary and Edmonton can be easily reached by any means of transportation.

Sight Unseen Program: If you can’t make it to the sale: please let us know and we will go over the sale cattle together. If you wish to bid we will have a representative do so on your behalf within your price range. Telephone bids welcome. Please contact Les, Walter or Allen for more information.

Guarantee: All cattle guaranteed breeders. Standard Canadian Hereford Association Guarantee applies.

Health: Cattle will be sold in compliance with the health laws of the Province of Alberta. This is in a tuberculosis and brucellosis free area. Females are all vaccinated for I.B.R. All sale cattle have been treated with Ivomec. All bulls have been tested free of Hypotrichosis, Idiopathic Epilepsy & Dilutor. Holloway sale animals are dehorned with paste at birth.

Delivery: Free delivery to central points in the Western Provinces. Commercial animals will be delivered at cost.

Terms: Terms of sale are full cash payment sale day, unless prior arrangements have been made with Les or Walter. Animals are at buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be well cared for until loaded out.

Insurance: Insurance will be provided at the sale. It is recommended that animals left for delivery be fully insured.Announcements: Announcements from the auctioneer supersede any printed material.

Welcome!

A very sincere welcome to this first Holloway Hereford sale with Blume Ranches as guest contributors. This is the 51st sale welcome we are writing. It would appear to be the last, as the 14 Wabash bulls in this sale are the final group to be sold from the Blume Hereford program.

Hereford cattle have been at the forefront of our ranch since Father, John E., bought the first three registered heifers home from S.P. Gould in 1941. Bull sales, Production sales, as well as private treaty business have been the order of the day for 70 years.

The many friends we have made over the years are the reward for having been in the industry as Hereford breeders.

Our wish is that you support the Holloway family as the Blumes have been supported. Les and his crew have assembled a great set of registered cows, along with an excellent bull battery. The cattle are handled in a practical manner alongside a large commercial herd of straight Herefords. The registered cattle MUST perform to make it in this herd.

The top end is on offer February 24, 2011.

Herd History....Our roots in the Hereford industry go back to when my Dad (Dave) started his herd in 1945. He was a firm believer in always using the best bull he could afford and keeping the best quality heifers for breeding

When I started my own herd in the 1970’s, I experimented with other breeds but came back to settle with Herefords because of their temperament and the economics of raising easy doing, highly productive cattle.

Holloway Farms was started in the 1980’s with my Dad and then my brother Nelson joining full time in 1986.

We bought our first Blume bull in 1983 and liked him so much we have been buying Blume bred Herefords every year since. Several times over the years we have purchased the top selling animal at the sale including 78Z in 1992. Our first Blume female was purchased in 1989 and we have been building our own purebred herd since then. We started using the purebred herd we developed to raise purebred bulls to service our commercial herd while increasing the registered female numbers as well. We still do that today, breeding 400-500 commercial females and about 200 registered purebred Hereford females.

We were very fortunate to be able to purchase the good females that the Blumes kept in December of 2009 and are proud to join with them in our first production sale in 2011.

We selected 34M for his thick easy fleshing quality combined with good conformation. He has given us many good years of service. He improved our herd through both males and females. We have 8 sons in our herd bull battery at present and think very highly of 34M progeny.

We chose 19R for his big, rugged, long frame with the intention of raising good commercial cattle. We liked him so much that we decided to spread him over our herd. 52U, the dam of our feature yearling heifer, 21X, is a daughter of 19R. Several of his sons are also in the sale.

18S was the high selling yearling bull at the Midwest Sale and Intermediate Reserve Champion at the Saskatchewan Field Day. We lost him after three years of service. When we picked sale heifers we just did a gate run sort so we are selling the same quality of heifers that are going into our own herd, serviced by the same sires. We expect very few calving difficulties. Last year we calved 430 cows and 120 heifers without needing the services of a vet for anything. Our steer calves have gone to YT feed lot for the past 10 years where the late Russell Jones said they averaged just short of 4 lbs per day gain. Take a close look. These cattle cross well with any breed out there.
