OVERALL EXCELLENCE AWARDS The Father Paul Kane Award acknowledges the Year 7 student who most enthusiastically embraces the challenges of secondary education. Father Kane was chair of the College Board and Parish Priest of St Matthew’s North Fawkner for over 30 years. He always showed unstinting support of Mercy College. The Giuliana Bianchi Award acknowledges the Year 8 student who shows commitment, passion for learning, good humour, compassion and courage at all times. Giuliana Bianchi was a teacher at Mercy College for 20 years from 1972 to 1992. The Milton Anderson Award is bestowed in the memory of Milton Anderson, a member of staff who passed away suddenly in 1997. This award acknowledges the Year 9 student who shows initiative, participation and commitment to all aspects of College life. The Moreland Rotary Award acknowledges the Year 10 student who actively participates in the College and local community. The Ivanka Vrkic Award is bestowed in memory of Ivanka, a Year 10 student who was tragically killed in 1992. It acknowledges the best ‘all round’ student in Year 10 who commits herself to the pursuit of excellence. The Commitment and Dedication Award is supported by Source Central Partners and goes to the student who has displayed commitment and dedication to her studies and focused on improving her results in all areas of her work. The Angela Connellan Award is presented to the Year 11 student who has remained dedicated to her studies and others in memory of Mrs Connellan who was a librarian at Mercy College for over 20 years until her death in 2001. The Caltex Best All Rounder Award is given to the student who consistently excels in all areas of school life and encourages school and community spirit. The Oscar Romero Social Justice Award is presented to the student who has been most actively engaged in Social Justice projects within the College. It is named for Archbishop Oscar Romero who was martyred by the military government of El Salvador for his defence of the poor. The Peter Khalil Debating Award recognises dedication to debating, debating skills and team spirit. The Co-Curricular Music Award is presented in recognition of a student’s dedication and involvement in the co-curricular Music program offered at the College. Mercy Education Scholarships are sponsored by Mercy Education Ltd and are presented to students who have shown genuine concern for others, are active in their involvement with awareness and fund raising, are involved in community service and take a stand on human rights and social justice. ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award is sponsored by The Australian Defence Force and awarded to students who demonstrate skills in leadership, teamwork, problem solving and resourcefulness within a community setting and a strong values framework. The Faye O’Leary Board Leadership Award acknowledges the contribution of a student leader who has made an outstanding contribution to the student leadership team. Faye was the first College Captain and modelled leadership as service to others in her outlook and in her actions.
