Philosophy of Nursing

A nursing philosophy gives guidance to the nurse’s approach to caring for clients. Although a nursing philosophy is not fully formed at the start of one’s nursing education, there are several beliefs that are an essential part of nursing.

First and foremost, compassion should guide all interactions with patients. However, it should go beyond just having the sincerest desire to alleviate their suffering. A nurse needs to develop a compassionate understanding of all human experiences and extend this wisdom to not only patients and their families, but coworkers as well. This entails having insight into the complexity of human behavior and with this insight, never judging others.

Work ethic is also an integral part of nursing. Nursing is not known to be easy, but nurses must accept responsibility for their own work and the role they perform in the optimal care of their patients. Given the reality of the current healthcare system, that may not always seem possible. However, this is not an acceptable excuse. Instead, part of being a patient advocate is to advocate for change in the system, whether on a nursing unit or throughout the entire system.

Nursing is complex and a multitude of factors are at play with any given patient on any given day. Yet, it is simply compassion, understanding, and perseverance that should guide nursing.

Students will prepare a 2-3 minute verbal presentation of their personal values and beliefs about nursing. The philosophy should also include your core belief statement about treating human responses to illness.

Make it personal – philosophy statements are not “one size fits all”

Be creative – the use of incorporating additional technology into your presentation is strongly suggested.You may want to consider speaking about:

oWhy you choose to enter the nursing profession?oWhat do you believe makes you different from other nurses?oWhere do you see yourself in five years?oWhat do you think will be your major contribution to the nursing profession?

Incorporate a comparison of at least one nursing philosopher with your own beliefs.
