This book was put together by the two of us - Ryan Rivard and Jennifer von Schleinitz - owners of The Combine Restaurant in Simcoe, Lago Trattoria in Port Dover and Magnolia Hospitality Co.

We noticed that during the holiday season, things can sometimes get stressful and overwhelming... especially for the hosts of family get-togethers and the social convenors in your circle of friends.

We decided to step out of the kitchen and find a way to help alleviate some pressure. This Holiday Party Book is the result of our efforts. It includes 8 awesome holiday party ideas that will not only enhance your holiday festivities from a culinary perspective, but are ridiculously easy for you to put on. We want you to plan something your guests will rave about. Heck, we want you to plan the party of the year! All you have to do is select an option from this guide, and you’re on your way.

We’re not joking - it really is THAT easy, especially when you let us do the heavy lifting.

As always, should you crave something a little bit different, let us know! We are ALWAYS willing to personalize and customize your experience, - whether your event is in one of our restaurants or at an offsite location. So please use this guide to generate ideas, but not to stifle or limit your creativity. We can quite literally do anything you can dream of (...within reason!).

LET’S GET STARTEDNo matter where you choose to host your party, or who you choose to cater it… if you have put some thought into these five areas, you are on track to planning an AMAZING event.

MUSICMusic has the power to incite feelings, emotions and general dispositions of the people in the room. Make sure you put some thought into your music playlist so it ties in the overall vision of your event, and encourages people to take the actions you want them to take. Perhaps something upbeat, fun, and well known. Spotify is a great app for searching for music based on “moods” - give it a try!

FOODYour food choices should tie in to your overall vision, and you must take your guests allergies and sensitivities into consideration. If you hire a caterer, choose someone you trust and then - we’re going to be blunt here - get out of their way. If you’re preparing the food yourself, make a list of all the preparations you can take care of in advance, and decide early on how you will structure your time and kitchen space on the day of.

PEOPLEYour event is all about the PEOPLE who are there, the energy they bring and the things they value most. When making choices about your event, think about the personalities that will be in the room and make a list! Even if it’s a small get-together. You definitely don’t want to risk forgetting someone or mis-counting your guest numbers.

DRINKSEven if you’re hosting a non-alcoholic event, it’s essential to think about beverages. What types of drinks would pair well with your food and overall vision? Aim to offer a signature beverage (or two) along with the staples you know your guests will be looking for.

VENUEStart with a vision that incorporates all five senses: the sights, the sounds, the smells, the tastes and the touches. Then find a venue that best supports that vision and can provide at least a couple of the feelings/sensations you envisioned. When making any of your decisions, always bring it back to the experience you want people to have at your event. Are your choices supporting that vision?

• SIT DOWN MEAL The most formal option, and works well when everyone will be arriving and eating all at the same time.

• BUFFET A buffet works really well when you have a very “mixed bag” of guests who are all going to enjoy very different things.

• FOOD STATIONS In our opinion, food stations are the BEST. They are a fantastic way of providing a high quality experience that also feels relaxed and fun. It encourages people to mingle, and walk around to check out all the various stops.

• STROLLING DINNER This cocktail style approach is PERFECT for social events where people aren’t expecting a full-on meal, but are spending most of the evening chatting, watching a band, or dancing.
