The Royal Society for thePrevention of Accidents(RoSPA) will run a free healthand safety clinic offering helpand advice at the UK’s largestannual gathering for leisureprofessionals.

The clinic will take place fromTuesday, September 18 toThursday, September 20 in theAttractions Industry Lounge atthe NEC in Birmingham as part

of Leisure Industry Week (LIW).RoSPA’s approach to leisuresafety is that it should be “assafe as necessary, not as safeas possible” and specialistswill be on hand to offer adviceand information to visitors.

On the Tuesday, there will alsobe a presentation titled As Safeas Necessary, which will outlineRoSPA’s approach to leisureand play, using case studies to

demonstrate how to strike theright balance when dealingwith competing demands. Itwill run from 10.45 - 11.15am.

During the session, DavidWalker, RoSPA’s leisure safetymanager, and Nathan Davies,RoSPA’s water and leisureteam leader, will highlight someof the key lessons and toolsthat can be applied to leisuresafety, whether it is within a

on revision of the ManagingHealth and Safety in SwimmingPools guidance, why theguidance is being updated andwhat it plans to achieve.

Nathan Davies said: “TheRoSPA leisure and water safetyclinic is a chance for visitors tospeak to us on all areas ofleisure safety. RoSPA hassubstantial experience offeringadvice and training onactivities, site management and

site design. We also reviewhealth and safety managementsystems and accidentprevention arrangements atrecreation facilities andwaterfront sites, as well asundertaking accidentinvestigations and expertwitness work.

Albion Canvas Co has recently supplied Yurts andGeodesic Domes to Perran Sands Holiday Park,Cornwall’s largest holiday park which opened in

1947. The 550 acre site has exceptional leisure facilitieswith indoor/outdoor pools, entertainment and clubs.The Yurts and Geodomes are in addition to existingtraditional static caravans, chalets, Euro Tents andtouring pitches and add a new style of holidayexperience.

Nick Cook, Holiday Experience Manager at Perran Sands notedthe rise in the trend for Glamping and felt that the stunning naturallocation (awarded a Gold Level David Bellamy Award) of the sitelent itself perfectly to the back to nature with luxury style ofaccommodation. He commented, “Perran Sands likes to keep upto date with new, fresh holiday experiences. The yurts andGeodomes will help to broaden our traditional customer base andgive us an opportunity to expand.”

The Geodomes have been positioned next to the sand duneswhere they blend seamlessly into the landscape. Whilst theyappear rustic on the outside, inside the living is easy with woodenbases which have been carpeted, a fridge and cooker, plus a verycomfortable double bed, two singles and a corner sofa that addsspace for two more to sleep. There are lockable wood doors and acoloured serge inner roof lining. There is space for 6 people whichoffers great value with prices startingfrom £249 for a three night weekend

outside school holidays.

At present Perran Sands isthe only Haven park to havetried the accommodation. Cook reports that the response to thenew style of Glamping accommodation has been excellent. At theend of the season he will conduct consumer research and mayincrease the offering in Cornwall and at other sites.

TheGeodomes are made and finished to the highest standards usinga strong aluminium frame, with stress points having double andtriple reinforcement where necessary and all seams sewn with aFrench seam for strength and superior water exclusion. IT’S FACT: IOG SALTEXVISITORS HAVE REALBUYING POWER!IOG SALTEX continues to attractinfluential buyers and decision-makers from the turf and openspace management industry, withnearly three-quarters (72 percent) of the 9,267 visitors to lastyear’s show having responsibilityfor specifying products andservices.

Indeed, 32 per cent of visitorswere from organisations thatspend up to £50,000 a year onproducts and services, 19 percent from firms that spendbetween £50K and half a millionpounds a year, and over 13 percent had budgets above£500,000.

In addition, the independentresearch by Vivid Interface alsostates that 81 per cent of visitorswith purchasing power said IOGSALTEX influenced their decisionto find a new product/supplier orto place an order that they wouldnot have placed if they had notvisited the event at Windsor.

The research also showed that, inan average month, 37 per cent ofvisitors involved in purchasing donot see any non-supplier salesrepresentatives and 12 per centsee only one, while 38 per centwere likely to ask for a quotewhile at the show.

In 2012 Fordingbridge were delighted to design and install alarge canopy at Paultons Park in the New Forest. Our clientwanted to create an extensive covered picnic area next toconcession kiosks to keep guests under cover whatever theweather. Due to the scale of the project Fordingbridge designed amulti span barrel vault timber canopy covering 441 metressquared. The structure consists of three 7 metre spans, 21metres long. The canopy is clad in a fire retardant Opal 60fabric; this fabric allows high light penetration while providinggood UV protection.Our canopies and walkways are ideal for amusement parksand holiday centres. Holiday parks set to court single parents

The Best of British holiday parks group islaunching a summer campaign to woo singleparents. It says that for single mums and dads

going away with children, holiday parks tick all theboxes which are left blank by hotels, guest housesand rented cottages. The 50-strong group ofindependent holiday parks believes that for manysingles, the biggest holiday headache is trying tokeep youngsters amused without straining thebudget.

"The dread question of "what can we do now?" is often thetrigger for going out and spending more money," says BOBchairman Claire Jeavons.

"But on a holiday park, that issue just doesn't arise. Childrenare often straining at the leash each day to explore thegrounds, enjoy the inclusive activities, and meet otheryoungsters.

"Children are naturally gregarious, much more so than mostgrown-ups, and will often strike up friendships with otherchildren at the drop of a hat," added Ms Jeavons.

Many single parents, she says, accuse hotels and cottages ofproducing a sense of isolation which is met by getting in a carand heading off somewhere different each day.

But by keeping the holiday focussed on the park, Ms Jeavonscomments, it's less stress for everyone - and single parentsthemselves sometimes form impromptu communities duringtheir stay.

As well as saving on the cost of constantly seeking outentertainment, BOB points out, parks also provide much moreaffordable accommodation.

Rented holiday caravans and lodges offer excellent value, anddon't impose any surcharges for under-occupancy. Or there isthe option of taking a tent to keep costs to a real minimum.

Parks in membership of BOB, most of which are family ownedand with top tourist board gradings, offer a variety of inclusiveattractions depending on the preferred style of holiday.

Some have features such as swimming pools, children's clubsand nightly entertainment - all included in the price - with anon-park shop and cafe, bar or restaurant.

Others offer simply peaceful surroundings with attractivegrounds to explore, sometimes in easy walking distance to abeach or countryside trails.

"Single parents often say that they feel most relaxed when theyknow that children are happy, engaged and safe, and a holidaypark provides exactly the right setting," says Ms Jeavons.

"Almost all of our parks' single parent bookings are repeatvisitors, or are made as a result of a recommendation fromanother mum or dad who has stayed there.

"Unlike hotels, parks are created purely for pleasure - andwe've yet to hear anyone complain that they miss the mini-bar,trouser press or conference facilities!" she added.

Polaris announces jointventure in India

Polaris has announced a joint venturewith Eicher Motors Limited, a publiclyowned $1.3 billion (U.S.) manufacturer of

commercial vehicles in India. The agreementcreates a new operation in which Polaris andEicher will each control 50 percent. The jointventure will be headquartered in India andmanufacture products for India and otheremerging markets. The overall investment isexpected to be approximately $50 million,shared equally between the partners over athree year period. The long and the short of it

Long or short grass is no problem for the Wessex ProLineSTC flail collector. It's fitted with a large diameter steeldrum rotor, featuring four rows of closely spaced flails,

and two rows of draft paddles to create the suction forcollecting the grass. Because the STC has no narrow throat, asdo many collectors, long or short grass will be collectedefficiently without blocking, even in wet conditions, which makes it ideal for long grassapplications i.e, end of season clearance of wild flower meadows or golf course rough. Not onlythat, the STC leaves a fine finish on short turf as well. The ProLine STC comes in 1.2m and 1.8m working widths and is semi-mounted to the tractor to allow the brush tofollow the ground contours in work, and then be lifted out of work for transport. As the whole machine is not liftedon the linkage, the STC can be operated behind a small tractor with limited lifting capacity. The machine runs onits own four wheels, totally independent of the tractor. The front wheels are fully castoring and are re-positioned bya simple pin mechanism to adjust the working height, whilst the two rear wheels have flotation tyres to keep turfcompaction to a minimum. Power is transmitted from the tractor through a heavy cast gearbox and belt drive tothe rotor. The STC collector series is an all-year- round machine and ideal for various applications in its differentmodes.
