• Legionella is a rod-shaped bacterium which belongs to the genus L.pneumophilia

• Around 50 species of Legionella have been identified withL.pneumophilia responsible for approx 90% of cases

• It is naturally occurring in soil and water environments• At low temperatures (under 20oC) the bacteria survive but do not multiply, over 60oC the bacte ria die

• The bacteria multiply rapidly in nutritious environments created by biofilm and sediment

Legionella bacteria can only infect your body through inhalation of contaminated water droplets.

Legionella bacteria flourish undercertain conditions:• Temperature between 20-50oC with optimum growth occurring at a temperature of 37oC

• Little or no water movement as stagnant water provides an excellent breeding ground for the bacteria

• Water systems which enhance the spread of bacteria through producing aerosols/ water vapour which can then be inhaled

High risk systems which produce watervapour/ aerosols include:• Showers taps and baths (especially spray taps)• Cooling towers• Air conditioning units• Hot tubs/ JacuzzisOrigins of Legionnaires' DiseaseInfection by Legionella bacteria causes Legionnaires’ Diseasewhich is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia and typically affectsmen more than women. It is not contagious but it can be fatal. Thedisease was first identified in 1976 after an outbreak at theconvention of the American legion in Philadelphia where over 220people were infected resulting in 34 deaths.Since then, numbers of cases have slowly risen with latest figuresshowing 200-250 reported cases of Legionnaires’ disease eachyear in the UK.The risk of contracting the disease from a contaminated watersource is minimised by following the Approved Code of Practiceby the HSE (ACoP L8).

Who is at risk?Everyone is susceptible to infection, but there are those who are athigher risk:• Those over 45 years of age• Smokers and heavy drinkers• The elderly and infirm• Those suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease• Those with impaired immune systems e.g. transplant patients

Fatality RateInfection can be fatal in approximately 20% of reported cases. Thisrate can be higher in a more susceptible population.

A milder form of the disease known as Pontiac fever orLochgoilhead fever can be contracted by those who have healthierimmune systems. These symptoms are typically flu-like and areusually less severe.

Your Legal DutiesAs a person who is responsible for water systems you have certainduties under Health and Safety law. The Health and Safety at WorkAct 1974 (HSWA), Control of Substances Hazardous to HealthRegulations 1999 (COSHH) and Management of Health andSafety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR) all cite the HSE’sApproved Code of Practice L8 as the recommended guidelines forthe management of risk of exposure to Legionella.

Your Legal Duties and ObligationsWhenever water is stored or used in a way that may create areasonable foreseeable risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria, there is a statutory responsibility which must be upheld. If you are......an employer or a person responsible for managed premises; forexample a building with hot/cold water services or wet coolingsystems......then you have certain duties to carry out under Health and Safetylegislation.

The Five PrinciplesACoP L8 stipulates that the person responsible for your watersystems must follow these five basic principles:• Identify and assess sources of risk• Prepare a written scheme for controlling the risk• Implement, manage and monitor precautions• Keep records of precautions• Appoint a person to be managerially responsibleThe control of legionella bacteria in water systems -http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/l8.htm

The LegalsThe Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA), Control ofSubstances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH) andManagement of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999(MHSWR) state that there are guidelines which must be followedto protect employees and the public from the risks associated withLegionella.Health & Safety at Work Act –http://www.hse.gov.uk/legislation/hswa.htmControl Of Substances Hazardous to Health –http://www.hse.gov.uk/coshh/The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1999/3242/contents/madeFor more information and advice talk to W.E.T. Ok, so Coventry in February is noteveryone’s idea of a holiday but forthose in the holiday parks business,

it’s the only place to be! SPATEX 2014 at theRicoh Arena is the pool and spa Industry’sone-stop shop Exhibition and a must-attendevent for anyone involved in wet leisure.

Today’s holiday-maker is becoming more discerning and wetleisure is an important and often integral part of holiday parkprovision. By attending SPATEX 2014 you can find ways ofsatisfying, and potentially surpassing, your customers’expectations, becoming more environmentally friendly andsaving valuable time and money on running costs. A host ofinnovative new products; leading industry experts offeringfree, impartial advice and technical ISPE (Institute ofSwimming Pool Engineers) Workshops, plus the bestnetworking opportunities in the Industry – are just some ofthe ingredients that make the SPATEX Exhibition un-missableand why it is now entering its 18th year.

Shop window With over 100 Exhibitors displaying everything from wet anddry safety flooring, water play features, pool enclosures toenergy saving chemical control and heating and ventilationunits, SPATEX 2014 is the go-to Exhibition for anyone that isrunning and operating a holiday pool or facility. A vastproportion of the many innovative new products launched atSPATEX each year are geared towards commercialoperators. There’s a well known saying in the Industry: “If it’snot at SPATEX, then you probably don’t need it” and this yearperhaps more than ever, never has a truer word been said!

More than just an ExhibitionAside from being a great showcase, SPATEX is well knownfor attracting the Industry’s experts and its excellent ISPE(Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) Workshops give the

Show an important technical and educational element whichset it apart from other Exhibitions. Due to their popularity, wehave increased the number of Workshop sessions to 25 overthe three days of the Show, of which 20 feature brand newtopics. These are diverse in content and range from the newelectrical requirements for pools, spas and saunas to thedifferent types of insurance a pool company should consider. All delegates attending the Workshops receive a Certificate ofAttendance.

The line-up of experts is impressive with a roll call of many ofthe Industry’s most distinguished names. Following her talkat SPATEX 2013 to a packed audience, the Head of theNational Cryptosporidium Reference Unit in Swansea, Prof.Rachel Chalmers is returning for a second year to give apresentation on how to reduce the risks of Cryptosporidium. With outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis regularly linked toswimming pools, the prevention of the infection anddetection of the contamination, which can potentially affectall swimming pools, is of major concern to all pool operators. What makes Cryptosporidium control problematical is that itis resistant to normal chlorine levels used for pooldisinfection.

SPATEX is the hot ticket for 2014!

Swimming pools are expensiveand valuable assets, it makessense to enable them to be

used earlier and later in the seasonor throughout the year.

The fact that the “Great British Summer”has failed to make an appearance for thelast few years makes putting them undercover them even more important.

A pool is undoubtedly the campsitesmajor attraction and is even more so if thepool is enclosed. When it comes tobooking one of the questions most oftenasked of campsites is whether or not theyhave a covered pool.

For camping enthusiasts who are naturallymore inclined to put up with the vagariesof the weather, it’s reassuring to choose

anestablishmentwith a coveredpool. It meansguaranteedswimming

whatever the weather. It’s even moreimportant for families, for whom it’sessential to have activities to keep thechildren occupied. A pool enclosure isalso a strong argument in favour of off-season holidays.

For any holiday park or campsite, acovered pool is a major source ofattracting new customers andencouraging them to return in future years. With an enclosure an average 20% +increase in the occupancy rate wasrecorded by a French campsite survey.

Lower financial investment less than 20%of a brick and mortar building

Very importantly a pool building will- - Take control of the weather – wind, rain and cold. - Ensure no cancellations due to bad weather.- Guarantee your daily timetable.- Provide safety. Access to the pool is controlled. Itis inaccessible outside of opening and supervisiontimes.- Reduce costs of heating, Even on dull days solargain through the roof will provide free heat to theinterior. - Reduce costs of cleaning, chemical usage andgeneral maintenance

Although Arch enclosures suppliesenclosures from 5m wide we are knownfor our larger enclosures up to 25m wide

(16ft – 82ft) andany length. Toaccommodatethese largerwidths we havefive differentstructural archdesigns.

A great feature of an Arch enclosure is thespecial side panel between the archeswhich are sliding windows. Thesewindows give you three opening andventilation options; fully open 2m x 2m,half open 2m x 1m or a ventilation slot (inthe middle) of 10cm x 2m wide.

The windows are made up in two sections. This allows the top half to be openedseparately to assist ventilation whilstkeeping the lower half in situ to ensuresmall children and pets are kept awayfrom the water. When both sections of theside panels are opened up, they slideopen to a height of 2 meters, allowingeasy access to the surrounding areas.

The factory 10 year guarantee underpinsits reliability and resistance to externalconstraints (wind, snow...)[email protected] 01444 411 411

I: Lets talk about Maxxton….S: Maxxton has been in the holiday parks industry for 18years and is now the leader in the Benelux area. OurCEO started Maxxton as consultants for holiday parksbecause of the extensive sector knowledge. Ourcustomer base varies from single small-sized holidayparks to large international holiday park chains. Our system; Newyse ERP, is very stable and deals withhundreds of bookings per day serving customers withup to 600.000 bookings per year. We have just opened our new office in Birmingham andare very excited about what we can offer the UK holidayparks market.

I: So, what are the main challenges of holiday parksorganizations in the UK?S: The utility costs increase has obliged parks andcampsites to find cost efficiencies and constantimprovements on-site. Also, the UK holiday market iseven more seasonal than Europe and depends not onlyon the main school holiday periods but also on thefamously known British weather. We notice that, especially outside school holidays, the capacity is notbeing used fully due to incapable systems. As it is now,a large number of holiday parks are highly dependenton OTA’s (online tour operators) to fill their parks whichbrings along massive costs. When we talk about digital media,it is also hard to keepup and take advantage of the digital and social mediaopportunities to directly engage with customers, missing important direct sales. Campsites still relyheavily on call centres as online booking facilities arelimited and systems are often not able to deal withguest preferences and specific requests.

I: What exactly do you think is the solution? Why istechnology so key?s: I think a fully integrated solution, flexible and with lowinvestment, is the solution. It needs to provide e-commerce and your supplier needs to work with youlike a real partner, as Maxxton does. Newyse ERP, our solution, is used on a pay perperformance basis, has integrated e-commerce andreal-time booking. You can book a single unit, based onspecific requirements, unique pictures, all in onedatabase, online and offline. This makes efficiency andcustomer friendliness go hand in hand. You can keep ahead of your competition and meet yourever changing customers’ expectations.

I: Many suppliers out there claim to have the besttechnology… What differentiates you from the others?S: I would say, ask our customers! We offer a true newtechnology concept which is implemented since 18years and has proven to be very successful for ourcustomers. We work as a true IT partner for ourcustomers. Since we started working, we did not haveone single customer leaving us. With Newyse, we areable to offer our customers a solution that keeps themahead of the crowd. Thus we are very confident aboutour software. Please get in touch for a trial of Newyse ERP and youwill notice the difference..

If you are interested, please contact our UK office on 0121 222 5125 or email [email protected]

What is the link betweensales, performance andinformation technology?Séverine Obertelli, Head of Sales and Marketingfor Maxxton UK explains how choosing the rightsoftware for your organization can be the moresubstantial improvement.

The ever increasingnumbers of leadingleisure operators

installing indoor battery ridestracks from World of Rides, has confirmed their absolutebelief that the despite thecontinuing financialrecession… ‘Family Fun’ ishere to stay!

‘Families who play together…staytogether’ was more than proven by thelarge number of owners and operatorsof Holiday Parks who moved theirpollution-free World of Rides batteryrides indoors during all the wet weatherof 2012, and the early part of 2013, andas a result they were rewarded withcontinued high earnings throughout!

These were the same owners andoperators who had also bought theirbattery rides to put ‘All The Fun of TheFair’ back into their businesses, in orderto keep their holiday makers and visitorsreturning for more again and again…despite the very inclement UK weather!

World of Rides coin-operated andpollution-free ‘Parent & Child’ range ofjunior and adult battery rides are nowestablished as the most popular andprofitable choice that have re-filled thevoid of needing more family attractions, that can be played together, due to theirconstant high earnings… and the fastestreturn on investment in the entire pay-to-play children’s ride sector… although

they can also be runon Free-Play forparties andpromotions at theflick of a switch!

New models, including theupgraded FormulaOne racing teams, and MOTO GPtrikes, Off-RoadJeeps and the largersized Quad Bikes,as well as theirexciting Soft-ImpactBumper Cars andBumper Boats havealready emerged astop earners for2013… with forwardplaced ordersalready outstrippingthose of last year!

With both of thisyear’s FORMULAONE and MOTO GPracing seasons nowin full swing, andwith all-major TV

channel’s coverage of both racingseries, this has ensured that millions

of younger children and their familiescontinue to follow their favorite youngdrivers and riders on a daily basis… withthe kind of total adoration normallyreserved for leading film and musicstars!

In addition, the larger capacity dry-batteries now last throughout a fullworking day, instead of needing to bechanged every four hours… and theycan also be safely recharged in-situovernight without them ever needing tobe removed from the rides… using theirplug-in fully automatic battery chargerssupplied with every ride!

The new slot together portable trackbarriers means that a 6m x 12m trackcan installed either indoors or outdoorsin under four hours!

Battery rides always enjoy constantmulti-use by children and their families,so their income levels are neverdependant upon footfall alone, andneither are they weather dependant, asthey can also be safely operated eitherindoors or outdoors… on any hard levelsurface, in order to keep visitorsreturning again and again for more! All their new rides can be seen in actionon their website…

Holiday parks operators will need noreminding that there are many facetsto their businesses. In addition to the

basics of property and facilities management, the modern operator will have to contendwith, to mention but a few, attractions andentertainment, amusements, F&B and retail. To stay ahead of the market we all need tokeep ourselves informed of the products andservices available to us; no easy task!

Some of us may visit one or two exhibitions a year, be theynational or local but in truth, we are time-poor and need to besure about the relevance of any show before investing timeand money in attending.

This year the Holiday Parks Management team took a standat EAG International, taking place at London’s ExCel, with aview to meeting visitors and seeking out innovations and newproducts for our sector. The show is aimed at coin-op,amusements and the smaller end of the visitor attractionsmarket and is now in its fifth year, building upon the 70 yeartradition of an amusements show held in London during thethird week of January.

In common with the industry in general, the show’s base isbroadening as operators strive to add more value to theirfacilities, catering to the ever-increasing expectations ofvisitors.

What is different about EAGInternational? The first think most visitors say about EAG International isthat it’s a very friendly show which has a different feel frommany of the expos backed by huge media corporations. EAGInternational attracts around 5,400 visitors, so it’s not small, and counts both global and local players amongst itsexhibitors.

The real difference is that EAG International is put on for theamusements and attractions industry by the amusementsand attractions industry, with visitors and exhibitors able toinfluence the show’s management and directions –there areno remote shareholders to please.

EAG International is owned by trade association BACTA, thevoice of the British Amusement Industry. Representing allDivisions from large manufacturers through to small seasidearcades, BACTA is focused on improving the image of theindustry, encouraging good practice, and creating an optimaltrading environment.

In 2012, the show’s base was widened considerably when itattracted the support of BALPPA (British Association ofLeisure Parks, Piers and Attractions). BALPPA is a non-profit-making Trade Association representing the interests ofowners, managers, suppliers and developers in thecommercial leisure parks, piers, zoos and static attractionssector. Stonehenge Campsite, where summer solsticefestivals and pagan

weddings are among theattractions, is one of SouthernEngland's greenest places to

stay says botanist David Bellamy.

The camping park, which also provides "glamping pods", hasscooped a top gold accolade in the David Bellamy ConservationAwards to add to its ever-growing list of honours.

The award, said Professor Bellamy, was very well deserved thanksto the "fantastic achievements" of business owner William Grantwhose family has farmed in Wiltshire for over a century.

A raft of different conservation initiatives, he commented, is makingthe park as welcoming to wildlife as it is to those coming to view theworld-famous stones.

Located in Berwick St James, two miles west of the new £28 millionStonehenge visitor centre, the park opened five years ago on part ofa nine-acre smallholding of naturally screened pastureland.

From the outset, William (53) - who is the third generation of hisfamily to farm in Wiltshire - was determined to run the campsite inan eco-friendly and sustainable way.

A recent report by assessors from David Bellamy's ConservationFoundation, which administers the award scheme, said the parkwas a haven for many different types of fauna and flora.

More than 5000 indigenous hedges, trees and shrubs have beenplanted, it said, and provide invaluable habitats and breeding andfeeding resources for birds and other wildlife.

Bird boxes around the grounds also attract a wide range of species, and high nectar-bearing flowers draw both common and less-familiar butterflies to their blooms.

Professor Bellamy also praised the campsite's near self-sufficiencyin non-polluting energy, thanks to a discreet bank of high-efficiencyPV solar panels installed in a nearby field.

Stonehenge Campsite encourages guests to join its recyclingefforts, and shielded illumination on the park reduces light pollutionand allows visitors to enjoy the spectacular night skies.

It is open all year, and in summer provides up to 35 pitches fortents, caravans and motorhomes. There are also two luxurious "glamping pods" to hire which areproving extremely popular.

Stonehenge Campsite, said William, attracts guests from all overthe world, especially during the annual summer solstice festival inJune.

Two pagan weddings have already been held on the park, andothers booked and planned.

"We were really amazed to achieve the top gold-level award fromDavid Bellamy after only three years, and it's great to know he isfully supporting our work," said William.

"For over a hundred years my family has farmed this area throughthree generations, and it is a very special part of England both to usand to many other people.

"I believe it's right that nature should be fully respected and notcompromised by man's presence.

"I hope we are showing that tourism enterprises such as ours canwork in harmony with the natural world whilst bringing significanteconomic benefits to rural regions," added William.

Everyone has a website these days: But howmany of them really work and produceincome and results?

It’s all too easy to have a website built and then expect to get newbusiness. But there is so much competition out there how do youget your website seen? Then once people visit it how do youattract them s clients?

The website itself is just part of this puzzle. There are a few basicsteps that lead to a new client:

1. People who are interested in what you offer visit your website(targeted traffic)2. Your website is simple to use and navigate 3. You capture peoples information whilst they are at your website4. You follow up with quality messages 5. You offer them great service and they spread the word

Targeted Traffic Website traffic is easy. I can get thousands of visitors to anywebsite with ease. However getting targeted traffic is harder. Ittakes time and effort. And targeted traffic is the key to success.

A website is like a shop window. If you had a shop in your localhigh street for your business would it work? Chances are no.There may be thousands of people passing by but how many areinterested in what you offer – at that time?

Your website needs to be visible to people at the exact momentwhen they are looking for an offer like yours. So if you sell holidaylodges in North Wales you need people to find you when they arelooking for a holiday lodge in Wales.

This means you need to be on the front page of the search resultswhen people put in the relevant terms. But not everyone can beon the front page – there are only 10 spots. Luckily there are otherways to get hot leads. These involve social media, PR, articles, blogs and other forms of inbound marketing.

You may have noticed, as many of our clients have, a fall off in thereturns from print advertising. It’s been in decline for years. Iremember when I could put an advert in the Mail on Sunday orthe News of the World and the phone would ring all day andMonday. Happy days; but they are no more.

80% of people research purchases online before actually buying. So if you place an advert in the paper people may like the idea:They will visit your website or make an enquiry: But they will alsoresearch online your competition. So you need to have a strong

presence and reputationonline to still stand achance at this newbusiness. At the end of theday a combined approachis what is needed.

Data CaptureOnce you get people toyour website you need tocapture their data. Simpledata catchment forms canhave a huge effect. Mostpeople will only visit yourwebsite once. So while theyare there get their email andname. Then you can sendthem emails and engagewith them. In this way youbuild your reputation andgive people reasons tomake their purchase fromyou and not yourcompetition. Social media now offersyour brand the chance toengage with prospects andcustomers. You can offerthem great service andvalue. And in this way youwill be the natural choicewhen it comes time for theirnext booking or purchase.

Constant MarketingLeads to SuccessMarketing now must be a constant stream of actions andengagement. In this way your business will be the first choicewhen it comes time to book. Best of all social media allows youraudience to recommend you to their network, thus your offerspreads organically. Personal recommendation is more powerfulnow than ever before. Reputation is key to this and businessesneed to have a plan to manage this online.

While some clients and suppliers are using the German (DIN79000) or French national standards (XP S 52-904), others areusing the UK BS EN1176 Playground Equipment standardwhich relates only to children’s play equipment or the BSEN957 Stationary Training Equipment standard which appliesto indoor gym equipment. Meanwhile, the PAS888 Publiclyaccessible outdoor exercise equipment specification waspublished in May 2013, which is not a national standard andhas been commercially sponsored. Adult Outdoor FitnessEquipment is designed to provide a free access facility offering thebenefits of Cardio Vascular and repetitive exercise patterns. It offers manyadvantages to local communities, helps promote healthy living andprovides a gateway for wider fitness activities. The equipment is intendedfor people aged 14+ with an overall height of 1.4m and over and is notdesigned, intentioned or proportioned for children.

Work is underway to develop a new European standard for general safetyrequirements for the manufacture, installation, inspection andmaintenance of permanently installed, freely accessible outdoor fitnessequipment. It is hoped that the new standard (EN 16630) will bepublished in 2014 and will address any remaining confusion. UntilEN16630 is available, the API advises those planning to install OutdoorAdult Gym Equipment to use the existing German or French nationalstandards.

The German and French national standards clearly distinguish OutdoorFitness Equipment from Children’s Play Equipment, provide a clear routetowards both compliance with a recognised safety standard and theforthcoming European Standard, are already used by the RPII forinspection purposes and allow greater alignment with the new Europeanstandard once published. They also provide clear distinction in scope onrecommended adult age and height range and address health and userhazards.

When positioning Adult Outdoor Fitness Equipment, the APIadvises specifiers and suppliers to undertake a rigorous Risk:Benefit assessment as some items pose a higher risk thanothers, for instance, those with moving parts. It thenrecommends the completion of assessments of the proximityof unsupervised children’s play equipment, the age rangesuitability of other facilities or equipment close by, the suitabilityof the surface onto which the products will be installed and the

need for screening or other separation to reduce inducement to children. Finally, it advises that equipment is clear and permanently marked as notsuitable for children’s play and with instructions for use.

API Chair Michael Hoenigmann says: “Adult Outdoor Fitness Equipmentprovides clear health and well-being benefits to users and is a growingtrend in public leisure spaces where local authorities are looking toencourage participation in active outdoor physical activity. There has untilnow been some uncertainty around standards but the API’s newguidance provides much-needed clarity. We look forward to theintroduction of EN 16630, the new European standard, as soon aspossible.”

The use of widely different standards and specifications when installing Adult Outdoor FitnessEquipment is causing confusion in the marketplace, according to the Association of Play Industries

New play and activity zonescan help holiday parks tomeet increasing demand,

as the trend for more familieschoosing to ‘staycation’ in the UKcontinues.

The provision of high quality playfacilities is one of the key decision-making factors forparents when they are researchingand booking a family holiday. Thisis particularly true for families withchildren under 12.

However, studies demonstrate thata well thought out outdoorplayground will not only attractbookings and improve thecustomer experience of a park, butwill also drive up revenue aroundbars, restaurants and other paid forfacilities. Better play facilitiesencourage families to spend more

time on-site at holiday parks, andto spend more money while theyare there.

A high-impact playground, usingsignature pieces of play equipmentto stand out and deliver the ‘wow’factor, can also become significantin encouraging repeat visits toparks, demonstrating the impact of

‘pester power’ on parents. Havingan exciting and dynamic play areafor children can create amemorable, positive experience forfamilies, making them more likelyto return to holiday sites time-after-time. Michael Hoenigmann, Managing

Director of Proludic and Chair ofthe Association of Play Industries, comments:

“We know that play areas are atthe heart of the holiday experiencefor families. Play is always a crucialactivity for children, and‘staycation’ holidays in the UK offerthe perfect opportunity for familiesto spend time together and havefun outdoors.

“We have also found that whensuccessful play areas are locatednear to cafes and restaurants inholiday parks, clients can seedouble-digit revenue growth inthose outlets. This creates realopportunities for businesses tomaximise the return on investmentin their play facilities.”

A true story of how one business owner dropped his yearly electricity bill from £22,284 to £4203

A precis of a report issued by Rob Williams ofTrawsdir Park Barmouth to Adam Beckett of LeisurePark Energy.

Why choose to install renewable energytechnology? Looking back 10 years at what we were paying forour utility costs - to what they are today shows alarge percentage increase to us all. Looking forward10 years in the future, there is no reason to see thischanging.

In terms of costs, the system was roughly £66,000.We were fortunate that at the time in 2011/2012 wecould claim 100% Capital Allowance which has now fallen to 20%. I do believe that this has nowchanged, but in my opinion, even though the feed intariff has dropped from 39.5p to 21p, I would do itagain, bearing in mind the cost of the panels havecome down too.

Annual costs Before installing the system in late October 2011, wewere paying £1857 per month to Scottish Power. Wereviewed these figures with Scottish Power in Augustand agreed on a figure of £1005. So the immediatesaving was £852 per month.

The initial estimate we received from Arizon Energyfor the system was 18,000kwh per year. As from the1st January 2012 - 6th December 2012, we haveproduced 19,400kwh, and this is in what may be oneof the worst years weather wise. This equates inmoney terms to £7566 in feed in tariff. On top of this,50% of this figure which is 9700 X 3% has an extra£291 in export tariff.

The annual saving from Scottish Power is £10224,adding to that the feed in tariff of £7566, and exporttariff of £291 equates to a total difference of £18,081.

2011 Scottish Power bills £22,284 - 2012 ScottishPower bills £12,060. Our actual annual cost now is£4203. All our renewable heat incentive paymentsand feed in tariffs are all index linked so these figureswill change for the better each year.

Summary These figures go to prove that the solar PV isdefinitely working for us. In addition to this, we alsomade a conscious effort of changing all the lightbulbs for low energy LED's where possible, andlooking at all our electrical equipment to run asefficiently as they could. Also, all our SeasonalTourers were fitted with meters and the savings hereare plain to see. (People did not leave HalogenHeaters on in awning when they went out as theynow pay for their own electric)

Funding/Investment We did not receive any funding, or indeed find anysuitable sources. Predicted return on investment onthe figures above is approximately 4 years.

Solutions Whilst funding is a hurdle, Leisure Park Energy ismaking every measure available to access alternativeenergy.

Acouple who have just scooped a topenvironmental accolade for their TeesValley holiday park in NE England are

"green tourism role models" according tobotanist David Bellamy.

Husband-and-wife team Chris and Helen Brown ofDrovers Way Holiday Caravan Park in the village of Eltonhave achieved the prestigious David BellamyConservation at its top gold level.

The ten-acre park is one which Professor Bellamy haswatched closely after accepting an invitation to declare itofficially open three years ago.

Based on a farm which has been in Chris Brown's familysince 1952, the couple declared from the outset theirintentions to run the business on sustainable lines.

It brought them the David Bellamy award in the first andsecond year, and now they have achieved a hat trick bysecuring the honour for the third year in succession.

The accolade is presented to businesses makingexceptional efforts to protect and enhance the naturalworld, and is based on an audit by Professor Bellamy'sConservation Foundation.

The report found that a raft of initiatives by Chris andHelen was ensuring that wildlife in the grounds werebeing made just as welcome as human guests.

The rich bird life at Drovers Way is supported by thesiting of many bird boxes and the planting of hundredsof indigenous trees and shrubs which provide nestinghabitats and food resources.

Recently, the British Trust for Ornithology began a birdringing project at the park which will help track themovements of species such as swallows, woodpeckersand owls.

Birds, including kingfishers, are alsodrawn to the park's two private fishinglakes which also act as a magnet for awide variety of aquatic species including fresh watermussels and dragonflies.

The park's woodland areas and ancient hedges - plus aconservation buffer zone around the grounds -additionally provide a vast range of habitats for animalssuch as deer and badgers.

Guests can enjoy spotting wildlife from a willow-domebird hide, and there is also a nature trail withinterpretation boards to help identify both animals andplants.

Flora includes the park's proliferation of wild flowers withhigh pollen-bearing blooms which attract a wide rangeof butterflies, including both common and less familiartypes.

The park will eventually provide almost 70 luxury holidayhomes for private owners, and has already attractedbuyers from the north and south of Britain, as well asoverseas.

Helen Brown said that she and Chris were delighted tohave been considered worthy of the top gold DavidBellamy award for three years in succession:

"The family farm on which we are based has alwaysbeen managed with careful consideration given to thenatural environment, and our park is an extension ofthese practices," she said.

"I hope the award will go some way to benefiting otherlocal tourism providers by throwing the national spotlighton the what a wonderful place Tees Valley is for aholiday," added Helen.

John Deere’s new 4M and 5E Series line-up ofsmaller utility tractors from 49 to 95hp is aimedat a wide range of professional customers,

including greenkeepers and groundsmen, localauthorities, landscapers and contractors.

The newly designed 4M Series consists of the 49hp 4049M and 66hp4066M models, which have been designed to combine high levels ofcomfort with low operating costs. They are versatile mid-specificationtractors for applications where a narrow, low-profile compact tractoris needed.

Powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, both modelscan be equipped with a highly efficient and easy-to-use hydrostatictransmission with exclusive TwinTouch pedals, or a 12x12-speedmechanical transmission. The latter features an electrically engagedpower reverser to enable simple changes of direction at the press ofa button. As a result, the easier and faster shifting helps to save fueland reduce costs.

The ergonomic flat-floor open station operator platform is easy toaccess and also features a foldable ROPS, which allows the tractorto be parked in a normal garage. An independent pto sets the 4MSeries tractors apart from similar competitive products and can beengaged on the go without stopping or pressing the clutch pedal, forextra versatility and operator comfort during pto operations.

Both these new 4M Series tractors have a maximum lift capacity of1400kg, enabling the operation of a wide range of implements, including an optional, easy to attach John Deere front loader. In addition to the 4M Series, the new larger four-cylinder 5085E 85hp

and 5095E 95hp tractors featureStage III B diesel-onlyPowerTechE 4.5-litre engines.The existing 5E Series three-cylinder models from 55 to 75hpcontinue to be powered byStage III A engines.

Equipped with a spacious cab oreasy-to-access open operatorstation, the three-cylinder 5E tractors are now also available with a12x12-speed power reverser in addition to the existing 9x3synchronised transmission. The 12 speeds between 1.2 and 24mph(2 and 38kph) offer a wider selection of gears for each applicationand can reduce fuel consumption while driving at lower engine revson the road.

The cab features a tiltable and telescopic steering wheel for improvedaccessibility and driving comfort, a tilting passenger seat withoptional safety belt and an onboard computer on the power reversermodels to control driving speed and engine rpm.

Since Kevin Matthews arrivedat St Neots Town Councilfive years ago as operations

manager he has had one aim inmind: to turn the existing fleet ofmachinery Toro red.

“When I arrived at St Neots TownCouncil it was immediately obviousthat the machines being usedweren’t the best for the job,” hesays. “There had been no clearstrategy in place when makingmachinery purchases up to thatpoint and as a result the kit waswrong for the job intended.”

“I’ve been ‘making-do’ byincreasing cutting frequencies withthe machines we have, whilewaiting for the budget to startbuilding a proper fleet of machines.I was confident that Toro was the

best way forward in terms of qualityof cut and build quality. “For effective grounds maintenanceit’s imperative to consider themachine in relation to the type ofgrass being cut and the desiredfinish. You want the best possiblecut for the best possible cost. TheToro CT2120 delivers just that. It isthe first capital piece of equipmentwe’ve had since 2007 and the startof my dream Toro fleet!”

The CT2120 was chosen by Kevinfor its ability to produce a fine cut

and will be used for cutting villagegreens and lawn cemeteries. “TheCT2120 is lightweight and easy tomanoeuvre around smaller spotsand has a lovely fine cut for highvisibility spots. The fact that it’slightweight and compact means itcan be easily moved between siteson a trailer drawn by one of ourvans, too,” he says.

“It’s absolutely brilliant to have adecent bit of kit at last. It’s not onlymade a difference to the results weproduce, but it’s also made thegrounds team’s job that much moreenjoyable.”

Going forward Kevin has a three-year plan that will see all oldmachinery replaced - with Toro ofcourse!

Proven over years of use in the agricultural and industrialmarkets, Brigadiers clear anything from oil, sludge andmuck to general cleaning tasks without the need for filterchanges. Featuring a massive 20,000cm filtration area, the Brigadier DS-3450 is built to extremely highstandards and fitted with three heavy-duty 1150Wmotors which are all independently switchable formaximum efficiency. Small but significant details includeextra cable gland protection, heavy-duty motor housingclips and smooth rolling castors. When the Brigadier’scollection tank is full, emptying is quick, safe and easy. You simply raise the handle to lower the container androll it off to a skip or waste bin. There are no motorheads to remove and there’s no struggling with heavyand cumbersome barrels. The container is simply re-fitted by reversing the process, positioning the containerunder the Brigadier, lowering the handle and it’s neatly inplace ready for use. The Brigadier DS-3450 comes witha whole host of high quality and genuinely usefulaccessories. such as 10m of high-grade suction hose,
