I want to thank every member of the Charger family for your contributions to our outstanding work this year. We came into the year on a footing of uncertainty and with the hope of better days. That has come to pass. It is my sincere belief that we have taken significant advantage of the better times that came our way, and that we will con-tinue in that very positive vein into the future.

There is so much that I appreciate about Cypress College. I am always grateful for the continuing connection between the College and our retirees, several of whom attended this week’s holiday reception. Collegiality and inclusiveness are key components of our core values that are on constant display — however, they are especially evident at

this time of year at event after event across our campus and out in the communities we serve.

Most important to me is what I see happening every day. An unyielding commitment of the College to the success of our students. As final exams are coming to an end and as the last papers are graded, I hope you will pause and reflect upon your contributions, whether in the classroom, the Library, in our service areas, or other support pro-grams of the College, that you will take pride in your work, in your dedication to our students, and your nurturing of their success.

For near l y a ha l f -mi l l i on s tudents , Cypress Co l lege has been a spr ingboard to the i r d reams. Cypress Co l lege : Mot i vat ing Minds .

Donations from across the campus helped the Associated Students to feed 35 student families for Thanksgiving. A.S. mem-bers assembled baskets of food, complete with turkeys, as part of their annual program to help fellow students who are in need.

“Associated Students would like to thank you for your gener-ous donations to help feed families from our college this holiday,” A.S. President Jocelyn Zaragoza said. “In total we were able to make 35 baskets and donated 35 turkeys. We would especially like to thank the LLRC Dean, Dr. Cassens, for contributing to the food drive by coordinating the library’s ‘Food for Fines’ event with A.S. This was a great collaboration and we are looking for-ward to many more collaborations in the future.”

The myGateway portal will be completely offline December 27, 28, and 29 for necessary maintenance. The system is used for a variety of purposes, including registration, student records, and information sharing.

The outage will allow the IT staff of the North Orange County Community College District the opportunity to conduct needed scheduled work to Banner, myGateway and all of its sup-porting systems between the current semester and the start of the spring 2015 term.

Waitlist notifications will be suspended from December 20 through January 5, so that waitlisted students are not adversely affected.

The outage also should not negatively impact students seek-ing fall 2014 grades. Grades not entered into the system prior to the start of the College’s holiday period — the campus is closed December 24-January 1 — will not be available until the campus reopens. Monday, January 5, is the deadline for instructors to sub-mit grades.

Cypress College is highlighted as the cover photo for the California Community Colleges Facebook page. The photograph was taken by student Derrick Coleman, a part-time employee in the Cypress College Office of Campus Communications, at the “Legends of Hoops Night” on February 21, 2014. At the event, Chargers alumni Swen Nater and Mark Eaton, both NBA record holders, stood with their former coach on Don Johnson Court to see their jerseys retired. Coach Johnson was also recognized for his earlier induction into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.

BRIEFLYScholarship Applications Now Available Online and On Campus Cypress College’s 2015 scholarship applications

are now available both on the campus website and on campus. The deadline to submit scholarship applica-tions is at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 — though it is strongly recommended that applicants for the Bernard Osher Scholarship submit that sepa-rate application as soon as possible.

The Cypress College Foundation today is releas-ing two scholarship application forms. The first is for all scholarships administered through the Foundation, with awards generally ranging between $250 and $1,000. These scholarships will be awarded at the college’s annual ceremony, which will take place on May 11, 2015. Most scholarship funds are held until fall enrollment is verified and distributed after the fall drop-date has passed.

The Bernard Osher Scholarship award is made

partially based on the date and time that the applica-tion is received. It can be submitted at any point in advance of the deadline, however typically all Osher awards are made prior to the Feb. 18 deadline.

Applicants are urged to closely read all instruc-tions carefully. This years application forms incorpo-rate changes from previous years.

The forms can be completed in Adobe Acrobat (though it is not required to do so). All submissions must be made to the Cypress College Financial Aid Office by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. No electronic submissions will be accepted.

‘I Can Afford College’ Highlights Wide Financial Aid AvailabilityThe “I Can Afford College” campaign is a state-

wide, financial aid awareness initiative directed and managed by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. The campaign educates current and prospective students about the availability of financial aid at California’s community colleges – now and year-round – to help make their higher education dreams a reality.

The California Community Colleges is the larg-est system of higher education in the nation, with 112 colleges serving 2.1 million students per year. The col-leges supply workforce training, basic skills education and prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Despite the large number of students receiv-ing financial aid, there are likely even more that are

eligible. Research shows that many students don’t believe they qualify for aid and therefore do not apply. Financial aid – including fee waivers, grants, scholar-ships, work study programs and loans – is available year-round to help students pay for fees, books, sup-plies and sometimes even rent. Community college students who enroll full-time may have access to more financial aid and are more likely to complete their education. All students who need assistance paying for college are encouraged to apply for financial aid.

Students can visit the College website, http://www.cypresscollege.edu/admissions/financialAid, for detailed financial aid information, to begin the appli-cation process, get connected with our college financial aid office.

Principles of Advertising Class’ ‘Happy’ Videos Show Campus SpiritWe’ll need to fill in some detail when we get

it, but it’s clearly a thing to be “Happy” at Cypress College.

The class project was for the Principles of Advertising class (MKT 103). Instructor Susan Hunter said the purpose of the assignment “was to create a

video commercial for Cypress College entitled ‘Happy at Cypress College’ using the Pharrell Williams song as the background and the music video as the model. The uses of the commercial would be for prospective students and the community who might want to know more about a student’s perspective of Cypress College.”
