The customer entered the candy and toy storeand his eyes flew wide open at all of the toysand candies that there were to behold. If ever

there was the personification of the phrase, “like a kid ina candy store,” this was it. However, this individual isnot a child and can remember when the Dodgers playedin Brooklyn, Roy Rogers was a television star, andeveryone loved Lucy. As a Bill Haley song plays in thebackground, another woman from the same generationenters the store and her reaction is almost identical.

“We always know when they’re first time customersbecause they’re looking around,” remarks Eileen Wysel, who owns the store along with her husband Ronnie.

The couple owns Bobb Howard’s General Store inNew Hyde Park, which is attached to their auto repairshop. In the store, customers can purchase items fromdays long past. A quick glance at the items will bringsomeone back in time. Among the toys that are for saleare Snoopy Sno-Cone machines, stickball bats, Spald-ing balls, pea shooters, wood model airplane kits, handpuppets including Shari Lewis’s Lambchop, lunch box-es featuring ’50s icons, jump ropes, siren whistle rings,Duncan yo-yos, hula hoops and skate keys from a timewhen inline skates were a long way from being invent-ed. Football fans will be quite fascinated by a Super-ball. While the toy is a rubber ball that is not appropri-ate for football, it was quite popular in the ’60s and wasthe inspiration for the name of the National FootballLeague’s Championship Game, the Super Bowl.

“We’ve always loved the old stuff,” says Eileen as shedispenses popcorn from an old-time popcorn machine.Customers are given a dime to place in the machine, which then dispenses a bagful of popcorn made in it. If

the popcorn makes you thirsty, you can get a Coca-Colaor an Orange Crush from the old-fashioned Coke ma-chine. The soda comes in retro bottles complete with bot-tle caps that have to be removed with a bottle opener.

“Kids buy the soda just to open the bottle,” says Ronnie.

If the popcorn and soda isn’t enough to fill you up, thereis a plethora of candy from that era to purchase. On thecounter there are bags of Chocolate Babies, Bosco Bars,

One of the many holi-day traditions is fes-tively sprucing up

homes for the holidays. Prettylights, boughs of holly, stringsof garland, and animated holi-day figures all help to makethe season bright. Two suc-cessful local real estateagents, Kathy Orioli andIrene Racanelli, say those for-tunate enough to own theirown home should take pridein decorating it for the seasonand share it with others.

“The best part of a houseis having people enjoy it,”says Orioli. “Take time todecorate it. What good is itto have a home if you don’tenjoy it? Participate in deco-rating it and then, after youdecorate, take a minute ortwo to enjoy it.”

But what makes a homefestive and welcoming? BothOrioli and Racanelli havebeen in many homes through-out the area and have seenhomes that are decorated withimpeccable taste and othersthat did not give a nice pres-entation. One thing that they both con-cur on is that the aroma in a home canmake all the difference. The sense ofsmell can trigger memories that manyassociate with the holidays. Accordingto The Daily Mail Online, a researchstudy used actual brain scans to demon-strate that new “odor memories” - suchas the association of a perfume with aperson - become a permanent memoryin the brain. Often these memoriespresent a clearer recollection of a per-son, event or time than anything caused

by sounds, pictures or words.“It’s the smells of the holidays such as

pies baking in the oven that are important,”says Racanelli. For those who are not aptto taking to the kitchen, both Racanelli andOrioli suggest scented candles to give ahome a pleasant aroma. They both feelthat candlelight and pleasant scents are thebest ways to enhance any home.

“Candlelight is very pretty and thescent is very welcoming,” said Orioli.“It will always enhance.”

Candlelight can make homes quite charming during the holidays, but homeown-ers should also take necessary precautions to prevent a fire.

Most Long Islanders will beheading to local malls to dosome of their holiday shop-

ping. With the hustle and bustle of holi-day shopping, it is especially importantfor parents to be extremely cautious oftheir children’s safety at this busy timeof the year. To ensure that everyonehas a happy and safe holiday season,Nassau County Police CommissionerThomas V. Dale, along with the Nas-sau County Police Department andNassau County Executive Ed Manganohave offered the following safety tipsfor those who will be shopping withchildren.

1. Teach your children to stay withyou at all times while shopping. Theyshould always check with you or theperson in charge before they go any-where. Always supervise your childrenin a public facility and accompanyyoung children to the restroom.

2.Make a plan in case you becomeseparated. Have older kids meet you ina pre-designated spot (e.g. the salescounter or mall information booth).Teach younger children to look for peo-ple who can help within the store ormall — a uniformed security officer, asalesperson with a name tag, a motherwith children, etc. They should neverleave the store/mall or go to the parkinglot to look for you or your car.

3. Turn shopping trips into oppor-tunities for your children to practicethese “safe shopping” skills. Parentsshould follows these guidlines even on

quick shopping trips to local stores, sochildren are prepared when they goshopping in busy venues.

4. Leave clothing that displaysyour children’s names at home, as itcan prompt unwelcome attention frompeople who may be looking for an op-portunity to start a conversation withyour children.

5. Never leave children in toystores or public facilities (e.g. videoarcades, movie theaters, playgrounds)

and expect store personnel to superviseyour children.

6. Have older children take afriend, if you allow them to go shop-ping or to public functions withoutyou. It’s more fun and much safer.Older children should check in withyou on a regular basis while they areout. Agree on a clear plan for pickingthem up including: where, what time, and what to do in case of a change inplans.

According to County Executive EdMangano and Police CommissionerThomas Dale, those shopping withchildren during the holidays shouldfollow safety guidelines.

Children should be taught to stay with their parents or guardians at all timeswhen they go holiday shopping.

Survey Finds VerizonWireless Leads Pack InCell Phone Carriers

If Santa is giving out cell phones this year, he may want to check out the resultsof a recent survey, which gave high marks to Verizon Wireless.

If someone on your holiday listwants a cell phone this holidayseason, you may want to know

about a recent survey conducted byConsumer Reports on cell phone carri-ers. The survey, conducted by the Con-sumer Reports National Research Cen-ter of 63,253 subscribers, resulted inVerizon Wireless being the highest-rat-ed major carrier in Consumer Reportsannual cell-phone service ratings.AT&T was among the lowest rated car-riers, although its 4G LT network wasrated the most favorable of any carrier.

Of the four major U.S. national cell-phone standard service providers, Veri-zon Wireless led the pack, receiving fa-vorable scores for voice and data serv-ice quality, and also for support attrib-utes like staff knowledge and resolu-tion of issues. Sprint, T-Mobile, andAT&T each received mostly middlingto low marks, particularly for voice andtext service quality.

AT&T was among the lower-scoringproviders, but its 4G LTE network wasrated the most favorably of any carrier. Its users reported the fewest problemswith that higher-speed service, whichmost new smart phones now use.

Consumer Cellular, a national carrierthat uses AT&T’s network, received highmarks across the board in Consumer Re-ports ratings of standard (monthly bill)carriers. The no-frills carrier caters tousers with the simplest wireless needs andoffers the simplicity of monthly billingwithout a contractual commitment.

The report found that no-contractplans can be major cost-savers. Two-thirds of Consumer Reports survey re-spondents who switched to so-called“prepaid plans,” which typically lack acontract commitment and bill eachmonth in advance, saved more than $20a month by switching to prepaid. Thosesavings can allow wireless customers

to quickly recoup the cost of the phoneitself, which can be higher if they don’tmake a contractual commitment.

TracFone was among the top-ratedprepaid providers, receiving high marksfor value, voice and text. Like ConsumerCellular, it specializes in those who seeksimple, low-cost phone service.

Even those whose phone needs areless than basic can save by going pre-paid. “Some smaller carriers thatscored respectably in our Ratings andoffer low-priced plans, such as StraightTalk and Virgin Mobile, now offer fair-ly sophisticated smart phones,” saidPaul Reynolds, electronics editor forConsumer Reports. “And you can evensave by switching a phone from a ma-jor carrier that’s coming off contract toa prepaid plan.”

Cell phones have become increas-ingly popular holiday gifts.

B-B-Bats Lollipops, Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy, Smarties, Pine Brothers Cough Drops, can-dy cigarettes, Scooter Pies, and so many items that will bring back cherished memories.

“We feel blessed coming to work every single day,” says Eileen. “Just to see thereactions on the people’s faces when they say, ‘this is my childhood.’”

“People come in and it gives them pleasure,” adds Ronnie. “We all love our child-hood. It makes them feel good.”

For those having trouble finding a unique and special gift this holiday season, atrip to Bobb Howard’s is definitely worth the trip. Met fans will delight in a poster

from the 1969 World Series while Yankee fanswould prefer one from the 1956 World Seriesin which Don Larsen pitched a perfect game.Others will find it captivating to see theposters from It’s A Wonderful Life, The LittleRacsals, and Coney Island.

However if you think that only older genera-tions would delight in the merchandise, thinkagain. The Wysels say that members of a gener-ation who have grown up on computers andsmart phones are amazed when they see toysthat do not run on batteries. And if getting to thenext level of Super Mario seems challenging, just think about the skill required to play hit thepenny, in which the object is to move a penny tothe other player’s side by striking it with aSpalding ball.

“Kids walk into our store because they areamazed,” says Eileen. “They think that it’s new.”

“My niece will go crazy,” comments a cus-tomer as she leaves with a bagful of memorabilia.

While the merchandise in the store may con-nect folks across generations, so does the shop. The repair shop first opened in 1946. About 30years ago a convenience store was opened withit, which was then converted into the retro toyand candy shop about 18 years ago. The shop isnow servicing the second, third, and even fourthgenerations of customers.

“Doing the right thing, honesty, being fair

with people and honest,” iswhat Ronnie says has keptthe repair shop in businessfor so many years. “Alsobring in the best mechanics. Our shop manager startedwhen he was 16 and hasbeen with us over 20 years.”

So if you’re looking fora unique gift that will bringback fond memories, orcreate new ones, stop byBobb Howard’s GeneralStore on Lakeville Road, located between JerichoTurnpike and Hillside Av-enue. For more informa-tion, visit their websitewww.bobbhowardsgeneralstore.com, or call (516)354-9564.

When preparing a house tobe showcased for sale, remov-ing the clutter is of the utmostimportance in order to makethe home as appealing as possi-ble. The same is true if notshowcasing a home for a salebut simply showing it off dur-ing the holidays. Carpet that isdirty, entranceways that arecaked with mud and tabletopscovered with paperwork aregoing to distract from a home’sappeal and also any holidaydecorations that have been dis-played.

“Clean it up,” remarks Orioli.Another suggestion from

the real estate team is to havethe decorations match the dé-cor of the home during therest of the year. While an oldfashioned holiday is a nicetheme, traditional decorationsmay not match a home that isfinished in contemporarystyle. Conversely, a silver tin-

sel tree will likely look out ofplace next to the fireplace in ahome finished in a traditionaldécor.

“Too much tradition in amodern home is not appealing,

nor is a modern tree in a tradi-tional home,” remarked Orioli.“They say there’s no wrong wayto decorate but there really is.”

However you may decide todecorate, both Racanelli and

Orioli concur that celebratingthe holidays is one of the joysof owning a home. They en-courage homeowners to makesure they do so.

“Have people share with you,”

said Orioli. “If you and yourfriends are not taking the time toenjoy the space, what good is it?Light the fireplace and have a lit-tle eggnog. That really makeseverything worthwhile.”

Biscuits & Barbeque is owned by Joan Gallo (Mineola Resident) and Tom Sullivan (NYC) who also own The Delta Grill restaurant in Manhattan for almost 15 years. Delta Grill is a Louisiana-style restaurant and the executive chef is Bobby Bouyer, who is a native of Louisiana. Chef Bobby is also the chef at Biscuits & Barbeque, so although Biscuits is a Southern BBQ restaurant, there are many traditional Louisiana Cajun and Creole items on Biscuits’ menu.

Getting Away FromHome For The Holidays

Traveling during the holidays might offer the opportunity to see a holiday show.

Do thoughts of the holidaysmake you yearn for home? Formany people, spending time

with loved ones in the comfort of theirown home is an integral part of the hol-iday season. But there’s something tobe said for getting away from home forthe holidays - and not just on a longdrive to grandma’s house.

Holiday travel can be rewarding onmany levels, from the enjoyment of beingwith those you love in a great destinationto the pleasure of letting someone elsecook holiday meals and clean up afterguests. Whether you’re a single personlooking to celebrate the holidays withfriends, a family gathering members to-

gether from many states, or grandparentsseeking a special time with the grandkids,a holiday vacation has a lot to offer.

One advantage can be cost. Manytravel destinations that are typicallythought of as summer vacation spotsoffer deals and incentives to travelerswho visit during off seasons. When youtravel between Thanksgiving and NewYear’s Day, you can often enjoy a holi-day vacation for significantly less thanyou would pay to visit in high season.

Convenience is another bonus, espe-cially if you plan to celebrate with a largegroup. Coordinating schedules, preparingmeals, hosting overnight guests, and

keeping your home clean anddecorated can be overwhelm-ing. When you travel over theholidays, the housekeepingwork, meal prep and cleanupgets done by hotel and restau-rant staff - freeing you tospend more time enjoyingyour loved ones’ company.

Holiday travel is also anopportunity to escape theweather. While holiday car-ols extol the virtues of awhite Christmas, many peo-ple would enjoy a respitefrom snow and cold. Choosea destination in a regionthat’s balmy all year long and you can es-cape the worst of winter’s chill.

Entertainment and holiday celebra-tions are another benefit of traveling atthis time of year. Many destinations dec-orate streets, stores, hotels and attractionsin holiday finery. The decorations canboost your holiday spirits, and you canavoid the hassle of untangling strands oflights to decorate your own home.

Also look for a destination withshows, festivals and other celebrationsto enhance your holiday enjoyment. InMyrtle Beach, for example, venues likethe Alabama Theatre, Carolina Opryand Pirates Voyage all stage holiday-themed live entertainment. You’ll alsofind the Night of a Thousand Candles atBrookgreen Gardens, tree-lighting and aholiday parade at Broadway at theBeach, Christmas-themed dinner boat

cruises, New Year’s Evecelebrations and more.

If you’re thinking of aholiday vacation this year, keep these tips in mind, courtesy of the MyrtleBeach Area Convention andVisitors Bureau:

* Visit the destination’swebsite. Take a look at thedeals, in-market events andspecial promotions going onduring the holiday season. The destination’s official web-site is a great go-to source.

* Avoid traveling onpeak days. For example, theWednesday before Thanks-giving or the two days be-

fore Christmas Day are very busy timesfor airlines, and you may find airfarevery expensive on those days. But travelon the holiday itself, and you’ll likelyfind shorter lines and better prices.

* Pack smart. If you’re flying, keepin mind baggage fees - most airlines arecharging them now. If you’re driving, you’ll need to maximize space becausechances are you’ll be returning homewith more stuff, like gifts and souvenirs.Plan carefully to only take what youneed. For example, it might make space-saving sense to use the hotel’s shampooand conditioner rather than bring two bigbottles in your luggage.

While the comforts of home have plen-ty of appeal for the season, traveling dur-ing the holidays can be another great wayto share holiday cheer with those youlove. (BPT)

While gift cards remainpopular, legislation hasbeen proposed that wouldfurther protect consumers.

Gift Cards Remain PopularAs Senator Calls For Consumer Protection

Asurvey by Consumer Reportsfound that gift cards continue tobe a popular item. According to

the survey, 46 percent of respondentssaid that they planned on buying a giftcard this season, even though 15 per-cent of respondents said they still haveunused gift card of their own from lastyear.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal ofConnecticut, has introduced legislationintended to protect consumers who pur-chase gift cards. Called the Gift CardConsumer Protection Act, the legislationwould prevent companies that file forbankruptcy from selling gift cards andrequire them to accept and honor unre-deemed gift cards. Currently, if you geta gift card from a retailer that declaresbankruptcy, the prospects of redeemingit range from slim to none. Blumenthalsaid these protections would significant-

ly strengthen present law, which permitsexpiration of cards after five years, andnon-use fees after one year. The new billwould bar such deadlines and fees at anytime. In addition to these reforms, thebill would extend gift card protections tocertain types of cards that current federalprotections do not cover, including loy-alty, reward, and promotional gift cards, such as cards you redeem with creditcard points.

Consumers Union, the advocacy armof Consumer Reports, endorsed the bill,“You deserve to receive the full valueof your gift card,” said Pamela Banks, senior policy counsel at ConsumersUnion. You ought to be able to use itwhenever you want without fear thatthe card has expired or is no longer ac-cepted. This bill would be a welcomepresent for any consumer who’s beenshort-changed by gift cards.”
