SnowyImagesWinter can be a tough time for photography. The weather
makes it harder to stay outdoors or at least harder to get motivated to go outdoors!!
You may want to stay indoors shooting pets, things around your home, or going to museums, galleries, etc. But every now and again Mother Nature comes to our rescue and gives us s a snowfall or an ice storm. Make certain you dress for the cold and watch for ice!
Shooting these images uses the same rules we’ve discussed before - rule of thirds, foreground objects, etc. The main diff erence with snow shots is getting the proper exposure.
Your camera is designed to give you an average exposure of the entire scene. This is why most of your images are properly exposed. A very bright snowy scene tricks you camera into thinking there is too much light, so the camera will cut back on exposure. This makees the snow in your images look gray. If you know how to set your exposure compensation increase the exposure by 0.7 to brighten the snow.
A great way to enhance your images is using a polarizing fi lter, which cuts glare the same as polarizing sunglasses. Many photographers use this fi lter to make the sky in their images darker (and the clouds brighter) but this fi lter works wonderfully on snow. Removing the glare from the snow will help retain the detail in the bright areas.
That’s it for this month. You can email me with any photographic questions at [email protected]. Feel free to visit my site at www.KirmsPhotography.com
if you’d like to see some of my work. Keep shooting and trying to improve your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera.

GreetingsHello,
Wishing you a Happy, Healthy, and safe “2021”!Even with the Corona virus dominating our lives
in 2020, we were able to make improvements in our community. Our Clubhouse was in need of some T.L.C. We had it power washed, took care of all the electrical problems inside and outside. Parking lot across the street from the clubhouse is brighter and safer. Speaking of lights, it would be a good idea if we left our porch lights on! Some of our streets are dark and for emergencies house numbers are not vis-ible. Back to our improvements. We have a computer in our library for residents to use. We initiated a call system, form is in the bulletin if you would like to sign up. We cleaned up the beach area. A new sign on Yorktowne Blvd. the original was put on Hovsons Blved... Took care of a lot of trees that were damaged by the many storms that occurred in 2020. We opened our clubhouse when we had power outages. We kept our pantry open! We will continue to make improve-ments in “2021.”
As always stay safe,Evelyne q

the garden guy Martin Collazio
The north wind doth blow, and we will have snow. And what will poor robin do then?
Poor thing! He will sit in the barn and keep himself warm. And
hide his head under his wing.Poor thing! English Rhyme c. 1800Well, we are now officially in Winter and officially out
of the year 2020. Winter is welcome as a chance for the garden and ourselves to rest. Getting out of the year 2020 is more than welcome. It is a Blessing. The year 2021 is now our clean copy book. I know that by its end there will be plenty of blots. Let us all try hard not to make too many of them and keep our hopes up high. As for the garden is it really sleeping or is it dreaming green dreams about next Spring. I am thinking maybe the green dreams. Let us all rest a little while and dream our dreams. The house plants will be taking front and center for a while. This will be the fourth year for the Amaryllis to come in from their Summer Sabbatical. They have been hibernating in a dark shed and are now ready to have the dead leaves cut back. The bulbs have almost doubled in size. Now with the old leaves cut down, they will go back in the shed for about six to eight weeks. Have a little sleep and when awake again repotted one size up, given a good watering and a feed and set up in a warm bright room. Let us hope all goes according to plan. More later. The resident, all year house plants, agapanthus, philodendron, ferns, spathes, should all be investigated. Maybe the addition of a little topsoil, a light feed, a rethink of location because of the light change. They will let you know; plants are not shy about telling us what they want. As I said in my last column, the only plant that I brought in was the Passionflower vine. It was incredibly quiet for a few weeks. Acclimatizing, and not enough light because of the Virginia Creeper vines on the front of the house. After a particularly good show of red leaves they fell, and now with more light and a little feed, the Passionflower has rejoined the world and put forth some new shoots. Their rate of growth is amazing. Sometimes two inches per day and they go their own way. It is fun to watch the new growth and when it’s time for some intervention, be gentle and let them lead the way. In good Winters I have had blooms. Almost forgot the new addition. A little Palm Tree. In the sunroom, in the Fall in low light it was fine. Now in much brighter light it is still happy but wants less water. To creatures of the dessert, less water is best. Right now, it thrives. It is a reminder of the old Palm Court at the Plaza Hotel in N. Y. which used to give a great Victorian
High Tea every afternoon at four thirty. A nice memory. The catalogues will be coming in soon, (too many) but that’s for a little later. I will be planting seeds this Spring. Something that takes patience, but very satisfying when it works. On the deck this Summer was a great Vinca plant in a pot. (Lavender with a white eye). It was on steroids and I saved some if the copious seeds. And will start them in house this Spring. Also, some White Foxgloves which seem to like it here. Remembering a poem from the old days, I recalled a lovey, now somewhat forgotten voice. EDNA ST, VINCENT MALLEY. A poet of great note in the 1920s and 30s. (No, I’m not that old). One of the lines I remember well is “I lingered in the night to mark the smell of Tansey in the dark.” I’ve always wanted to mark the smell of Tansey in the dark, and thanks to a friend in N.C. I may have a chance. I will start them indoors this Spring and give a report next Summer. (In the dark). Ah, but enough, the real world calls us back. Good luck to all of us in the New Year. And all the best to all of you from all of us. Be careful, be safe, be patient. P.S. Try not to blot your copy books.

Caprese Salad with Grilled Flank Steak
From allrecipes.com
Ingredients2 tomatoes, diced 1 (4 ounce) ball fresh mozzarella, cut into 1-inch cubes¼ cup coarsely chopped fresh basil1 clove garlic, minced, or more to taste1 tablespoon olive oil1 pound fl ank steak1 clove garlic, minced1 tablespoon olive oilsalt and ground black pepper to taste1 (6.5 ounce) bag butter lettuce mix2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar, or to tasteolive oil, or to tasteDirections
Mix tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, 1 clove minced garlic, and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a bowl; toss to coat. Cover bowl and refrigerate.Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate.Place steak in a large resealable bag; add 1 clove minced garlic, 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt, and pepper. Seal the bag and distribute the oil mixture over the steak.Cook the steak on the preheated grill to your desired degree of doneness, about 5 minutes per side for medium. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 140 degrees F (60 degrees C). Let stand for 5 minutes before thinly slicing across the grain.Divide lettuce onto 4 serving plates; drizzle about 1 1/2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar and 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil onto each lettuce portion. Top each salad with 1/4 the steak and 1/4 the tomato mixture.
Simple Balsamic VinaigretteSubmitted by CIndy Kopp
It’s in the .”2’s”2 ounces Balsamic vinegar 2 ounces Extra virgin olive oil2 ounces water2 tablespoon Dijon mustard2 crushed garlic clovesOptional:Pinch of saltPinch of pepperPinch of Italian seasoning
Directions::In glass measuring cup pour in 2 oz balsamic vinegar. Then pour in 2 oz water (to 4 oz mark). Then pour in 2 oz Extra Virgin Olive Oil ( to 6 oz mark). Add 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard (this helps the vinegar and oil to stay together) In a container with cover (I use glass salad dressing bottle) put in 2 crushed garlic cloves. Add liquid mix-ture and shake well. Add desired seasoning. You can use immediately, but I like to leave overnight, strain out garlic (it gets bitter over time) and then use.Great for salads, used over chicken or when making Mozzarella, Tomato, Basil salad as topping instead of plain Vinegar. You can use any Vinegar you like in place of Balsamic, for variety Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter or margarine4 slices white bread2 slices American cheese1 roma (plum) tomato, thinly sliced¼ small onion, chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, chopped
Directions: Heat a large skillet over low heat. Spread butter or margarine onto one side of two slices of bread. Place both pieces buttered side down in the skillet. Lay a slice of cheese on each one, and top with slices of tomato, onion and jalapeno. Butter one side of the remaining slices of bread, and place on top buttered side up. When the bottom of the sandwiches are toasted, fl ip and fry until brown on the other side.

When shooting indoors everyone’s fi rst thought is to use a fl ash. While this is often a good move, shooting indoors without a fl ash can produce some very interesting images.
Using the natural light will enhance many images. Someone in the glow of a candle is a good example. Using a fl ash in this case will overpower the golden glow of the candle. This is also true of shooting an event on stage. A fl ash will eliminate the stage lights and create harsh shadows
Many of these shots will have a slow shutter speed, so you may need some additional camera support. If you don’t have a tripod, try leaning against something, placing your elbows on a fi rm support, and using the self timer.
As always you can send me an email at [email protected] with any photographic questions. Visit www.kirmsphotography.com if you’d like to see more of my images.
Keep shooting and improving your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera.
