Diesel option for power/economyBy Dean Taylor

Holden has taken their proven com-mon rail turbo diesel from the Cap-tiva, installed it in their mid-sized

Epica sedan, given the whole range a new six speed automatic gearbox and improved safety features and come up with a powerful and economical option in this popular market segment.

I drove the base model Epica CDX Diesel from Rosetown Holden - a car with a lot of features for under $37,000.

Standard on both diesel and petrol CDX variants are the six speed with Active Select, traction control, ABS, electronic stability control, 16” alloys, six speaker MP3 and CD stereo with steering wheel mounted con-trols, cruise control, electric everything, im-mobiliser, keyless entry etc. etc.

In fact it is easier to list what the CDXi has - 17” alloys, driver information display, leather steering wheel, rear parking sensors, leather seat trim and heated front seats, cli-mate control air conditioning, and sensor de-activated front passenger airbag. Top of the range diesel is under $41,000.

The option over the 2.5-litre, straight six petrol engine (115kW/237Nm) is the four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel producing 110kW of power and 320Nm of torque.

It utilises an electronically controlled varia-ble turbocharger and second-generation com-mon rail direct injection. The electronically controlled Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) provides fast response and more pre-cise power control. In addi-tion to improving perform-ance, this high-tech feature also reduces emissions and improves fuel economy and allows the turbodiesel engine to comply with strict Euro IV emission standards and deliv-ers fuel economy of 7.6 litres per 100km in Australian combined cycle tests.

Mr Epica test car was so new I doubled its odometer reading in a couple of hours, but the claims of smooth power control seemed fair. The six speed wasn’t the quickest at changing down two or three gears from a 50km/h cruise to hard out acceleration - but how often do you need that, plus, as I said, it was brand new.

In a safety upgrade, electronic stability programme (ESP) and six airbags become standard across the range, in addition to already comprehensive safety features.

I like the styling of the Epica - it has a Holden look but also a European feel and classy simplicity.

The interior quality is good, and once again there is a sort of classy simplicity.

A touch of chrome adds highlights, and steering wheel controls for audio and cruise control and easy to understand and a valuable addition.

The Epica feels stable and at home of our roads. It likes the country roads, or can sit on the highway using cruise control effortlessly.

With an excellent boot and good sized rear seat-ing compartment the Holden Epica is a worthwhile contender in its class.

Who has gone the diesel way?It seems the Europeans have known about diesel

economy and effi ciency for passenger cars for years - while the rest of us are confi rmed petrol

addicts. Now that is changing as more research and effort is

being devoted to the development of the diesel engine for economy, power and cleanliness.

Gone are the days of dirty, slow ‘oil burners’ - the diesel is being hailed as the saviour. And, if you read Page 5, you will see that you don’t have to pull over to let the gas guzzlers by - just put your foot down and stay in front.

Corolla with an attitudeBy Dean Taylor

As reported in the July DriveBy,Toyota New Zea-

land has managed to get its hands on three diesel passen-ger cars usually reserved for the European market.

I drove Waikato Toyota’s Corolla with the 2.0-litre engine and six speed manual - and what a little rocket.

Actually, to be fair, its not little. The Corolla is a four door hatch with a reasonable amount of room and storage.

But it is the addition of the diesel that is the news.

The 2.0-litre engine de-velops 93kW at 3600rpm and 300Nm of torque at 2000-2800rpm. Com-pared to their petrol equiva-lents, Toyota says they’re greener and cleaner with bet-ter fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.

Servicing intervals, once a sore point for diesels, are now the same as the Corolla’s petrol engines - once a year or every 15,000km.

It’s the available torque

running through a six-speed manual that makes the Co-rolla exciting.

If you want it to go, it does. And it happens quick-ly so be ready to change up.

The Corolla even has a shift light to let you know when to change - up or down

- a gear.It works, because the car

knows you are not getting any extra acceleration by over-revving when another gear will do better.

Toyota say the Corolla 2.0-litre will deliver econo-my of 5.4l/100km.

By taking it easy on the open road I managed to av-erage about 7l/100km - with a best of 3.9l/100km - but I had blown off a Subaru leg-acy that was tail-gating from the 70 to 100km zone. I bet he won’t like knowing he was beaten by a diesel.

My pride and joy...?

DRIVEBY editor Dean Taylor discovered this gem while test driving in the countryside - but wasn’t sure if the neatly arranged display should feature in this magazine, Rural Roundup or the Courier’sGarden of the Month page.

Help on the way to make younger drivers saferThe AA Driver Education

Foundation and Land Trans-port New Zealand have re-

leased Safer Young Drivers: a guide to best practice education.

The guide’s two key aims are to raise the overall standard of road safety education offered to young drivers and help increase the likeli-hood that young drivers who partici-pate in road safety education become safer drivers.

Traffi c crashes are one of the larg-est killers of 15 – 24 year-olds in the developed world. In New Zea-

land this age group makes up around 16% of all licence holders, yet be-tween 2004 and 2006 accounted for 38% of fatal crashes.

The guide is the fi rst of its type available to New Zealand road safety educators. It draws on extensive in-ternational research and experience to ensure that government and com-munity resources invested into young driver education are targeted to where they deliver the greatest road safety benefi ts.

Land Transport New Zealand say road safety organisations can also use

this excellent resource for guidance on the standards that driver training programmes and providers should meet.

Workshops will be held with the road safety education sector over the next 12 months to show them how to best use the guide.

Copies of Safer Young Drivers: a guide to best practice education are available on the websites of Land Transport New Zealand, the Ministry of Transport, the Accident Compen-sation Corporation, New Zealand Police and the AA.

By Dean Taylor

It wasn’t that long ago that the technology be-hind petrol/electric hy-

brid passenger vehicles was like a science fi ction novel.

Now it is not only a real-ity - but the prices of used models bring them into the realm of the majority of car buyers.

Recently Ingham Honda had this 2006 Civic Hy-brid on the lot for under $25,000.

The car receives thefuelsaver.govt.nz 5 star rating with a claimed 4.6l/100km economy rate.

It utilises a 1339cc pet-rol engine and an integrated electric motor running a con-tinuously variable transmis-sion.

Honda have integrated the technology into the Civic range alongside 1.8 and 2.0 litre i-VTEC petrol options. The cars are essentially the

same to look at - the top of the range 2.0 litre has a few extras and the miserly Hy-brid runs smaller 15” aero-dynamic wheels.

But the fuel saving model features all the same looks, styling, handling and safety features - so it is a great car

to drive. My - is it as good as a

‘normal’ car test - was to take two of my big mates to Ham-ilton and see how she went.

We had enough power to enjoy the ride and weren’t cramped in what is a mid-sized family car.

I wasn’t too light footed in my testing - wanting to see how the Hybrid per-formed ‘off the line’ and passing - but I still returned 6l/100km without trying, so not too bad.

This is technology certain-ly worth a good look.

Trucking ‘Charlie’s’ way of lifeParked up in Te

Awamutu most weekends is Mike

‘Charlie’ Charlton’s STL Linehaul 2007 Western Star Constellation 4900.

Any other time Mr Charl-ton and ‘Black Satin’ could be anywhere in New Zea-land.

He has been driving with the company for 40 years, starting when they did about 50 years ago. In between he spent 10 years with a cou-ple of other fi rms - including a stint in the offi ce as trans-port manager.

He says he was good at the job, but hated being away from driving and put on too much weight sitting around.

STL Line-haul have r e w a r d e d Mr Charlton with the pride of their fl eet - the West-ern Star which features a Cummins Signature engine developing 620hp (460Kw) and 2050ft/lb (2780Nm) of torque. Power is delivered through an 18 speed automatic Roadranger transmission.

It is a year tomorrow since he took delivery of the truck from Mount Maun-ganui’s Transpacifi c Com-mercial Vehicles. He says that company is great and he takes it back regularly for 10,000km grease and check and 20,000km oil and fi lter changes.

Mr Charlton is a ‘fl oater ’ for STL Linehaul. The truck is set up

for specialist jobs - it has fl ashing lights for when it car-ries oversized loads - which is often - utilising a lowloader trailer for large machinery, tanks and the like, or the trombone trailer which ex-tends to 22 metres for long loads. It is rated to carry up to 70 tonnes so Mr Charlton is on call to go wherever that type of machine is needed.

He covers about 200,000 kilometres per year and says there isn’t a road in New Zealand he

hasn’t driven. His wife Maria confi rms ‘there isn’t a short-cut in this country he doesn’t know’.

And in all his years, cov-ering eight million kilometres, he has never been in a crash. The closest call came when a

mate passed him on the Bom-bay on-ramp, lost control, rolled his trailer and took off Mr Charlton’s mirror.

MIKE ‘CHARLIE’ CHARLTON and Black Satin - pride of the STL Linehaul fl eet.

Be wary of savings claims: AA

The AA is warning motorists to be wary of fuel saving devices that may not deliver the promised results.

Jack Biddle, AA Technical Advice Man-ager, says people should be sceptical of the savings offered by fuel catalysts or other de-vices and additives.

“These devices and additives often lack independent, technically robust test results. In fact, many have been scientifi cally tested overseas and failed to improve fuel consump-tion or reduce exhaust emissions.”

“Automotive manufacturers are collectively

spending billions of dollars on technology to reduce fuel consumption. No stone is being left unturned, such as lighter materials or de-vices which monitor tyre pressure, as every little saving counts. So if any new device is shown to work, these companies will already be looking at it.”

The best way for motorists to reduce their fuel consumption is by modifying their driving habits. Considerable savings can be achieved by simple things like driving smoothly and not speeding. For more tips on how to save fuel, visit: www.aa.co.nz

New technology for Team Wilksbrooke Motors rider

Team Wilksbrooke Motors Crosscountry rider Mark Penny (above) is looking forward to

competing in the new season with a ter-rifi c new bike.

The Suzuki RM-Z450, now avail-able from Wilksbrooke Motors, was the fi rst motocross bike developed with fuel injection.

The development gives the RM-Z450 instant power, more reliability and means the bike is easier to start - especially in gruelling race conditions when you may have had an off.

Penny says whereas the carburettor

models tend to fl ood when the bike goes down, the injected system just turns off and is ready to go again when the rider is.

Suzuki engineers focused on two goals in developing the RM-Z450 - high performance and fl exible use.

They say the injected engine, fi ve speed transmission and balanced frame means the RM-Z450 is ready to race and will be the ultimate motocross weapon.

Already Steve Ramon has taken out the 2007 World MX Championship on the RM-Z450 and is currently sitting

second in the 2008 series with three rounds to go. Ricky Carmichael won both the 2007 American Supercross Championship and 2007 American Motocross Championship with an RM-Z450 and 2008 American Supercross champion, Aussie Chad Reed, is signed to race for Suzuki on the RM-Z450 for 2009.

So watch for the results for Penny as he defends his Belray Crosscountry Series and North Island Crosscountry Championship titles and looks to go one better than last year in the New Zea-land Cross Country Championship.
