STORYTELLING
Stories have amazing power and often lead to subconsious desicions. This is a fact that is well known by the advertising industry, especially the car industry and is used to sell their products with great success. In the project TRENDY TRAVEL stories in different formats were used to link sustanable transport modes, like walking, cycling and the use of public transport with emotional content and positive associations. The power of visual stories was used in the project in 5 funny, emotional video clips, produced especially for the project, to make people think about their transport choices. It is also important to remember that sometimes a story has the power to change peoples minds and attitudes therefore stories can be used to trigger a change in the transport system or a change in mobility behaviour.

Comic strips can also be used to tell a story. Trendy Travel enlisted the help of the famous cartoonist, Chris Scheuer, to convey the advantages of soft mobility.

During the project Storytelling competitions in three different partner countries, Ireland, the Netherlands and Austria, produced well over 500 emotionally touching stories about walking, cycling and the advantages of using public transport.
During their Storytelling competiton the Dutch Railway receive 158 funny, touching, exciting, romantic and cheerful stories from their users.

STORYTELLING
In the Austrian Storytelling competition professional writers from Austria, Germany and Switzerland were invited to contribute stories to the topic of: „positive emotions for sustainable transport“ and the City of Cork organised a writing competition in secundary schools.
In addition a Audio book was produced that also contains stories of the storytelling competitions and stories from the famous Australien „Place Maker“ David Engwicht. The audio book is completed by stories that are based on research facts.

RITUALER - Cykelkalender – Irland
Rituals – by definition a set of actions performed mainly for their symolic value, accomany us throughout life.
These Rituals give structure to our lives, strenghen social bonds, state an affiliation and they can be used to express, reinforce of fix shared values and beliefes of a society.
We believe that rituals are a very effective tool in the promotion of and achoring of cycling in our society.
By supplying cities, administrations, municipalities with a „bicycle Calendar“ that contains a long list of events that can be used like a menue – cities can select what is best suited for teir needs. We in TT have created several such Bicycle Calendars – like the one from Cork, Irland

Bike flee markets were very successful in different partner countries like Hungary, Austia and Ireland. This is a great possibility to get an inexpensive bike, especially useful for children because they grow out of their bikes rather quickly.

Bike to work and bike to school campaigns are already a fixed event in many European cities.

Cork - Irland
Rebel Pedal! is an annual bicycle parade that winds its magic through the streets of Cork city Irland. ANYBODY can take part in this colourful cycling cruise that finishes with a bike-themed Picnic Party

At the annual Cycle Chic fashion show the latest innovations of clothes, bikes, accessories and gear is presented to make cycling more emotionally appealing.

RITUALER – Varm chokolade – kolde cykler
Hot chocolate was a welcome warming drink for cold bikers in Denmark.
The main idea of all rituals is to establish an approach that enables City adminstrations to carry out activities as regular events every year.

PLEASING THE EYE - Kunstværker
Many decisions are affected by a good visualization. There was a need for good pictures, paintings and photographs in the area of sustainable mobility. Trendy Travel tried to close this gap by providing emotional photos and artwork. E.g. as part of the Trendy Travel task „pleasing the eye“ pupils from a secondary school in Graz produced wonderful artwork that was also exhibited in the city hall.

Photographs are also a great way of evoking emotions. Many such photographs were produced for the Trendy Travel project and are available for download by the public on the Trendy website, like the artwork.

HØJNE CYKLENS IMAGE
To raise the image of cycling that is often still considered a means of transport for less wealthy people, especially in the New Member States, a number of brochures and resource packs were developed during the Trendy project.
In the brochure „20 good reasons for cycling“ available on the website in 9 different languages, people can find inspiring reasons why cycling is not only good for the environement but also offers many advantages for the individual.

The parters from the New Member States were very active in promoting cycling during the Trendy Travel project. Many events were organised and a lot of information material and posters etc, distributed.

Forældre bliver påvirket
Children can be very persuasive when they want their parents to do certain things. Trendy travel used this knowledge in programms like the kindergarten lotto or the traffic snake game.
Two childrens‘ picture books a provided on the Trendy Website. One was designed by children for children in the EU-project Emotions and has been translated during Trendy travel by several partners. The other one was designed by kindergarten children in Bolzano for the Trendy Travel Project.

In Bolzano, Italy, kindergarten children also participated in bicycle workshops and learn how to bike programmes which included run bikes and regular bikes alike.
Bolzano has been particularly succsessful in the implementation of the kindergarten lottery. In this campaign children coming to kindergarten in a sustainable way are allowed to put a green sticker on the poster, other need to stick on a red one. The motivation for children to cycle, walk or use public transport for their way to the kindergarten is very strong. This way they also influence the mobility behaviour of their parents.
