Many of us would agree that we do not like to feel unsafe. We do not like to think of our children or grandchildren as being unsafe. Most of us would go to great lengths and expense if we could feel confident of our own and our loved ones safety. A 2011 book called The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined by Steven Pinker lays out an argument that we are living in one of the least violent periods in the history of the planet. The term better angels of our naturecomes from a quote by Abraham Lincoln during his first inaugural address. Lincoln knew the country was on the brink of war—a war that would cost some 620,000 Americans their lives. To put this into perspective, the total number of American lives lost in all foreign wars totals around 644,000. It was not until Vietnam that the total deaths in foreign wars would surpass that of the number of American killed in the War Between the States. I agree with Pinkers assessment: We are living in an extremely safe age and place compared to most of history and compared to people living in other parts of the world. Alfred Beyan is a minister at the G.S.A. Road Church of Christ in Monrovia, Liberia. A few years ago Alfred asked me to pray for his country while undergoing the Ebola crisis. Liberia saw 4,810 deaths in 2014 because of the Ebola outbreak. West Africa had over 11,000 total deaths during the crisis. In recent months Alfred and one of his children have been hospitalized because of typhoid and malaria. When was the last time you heard of someone in our country contacting typhoid or malaria? There are people all over the world dealing with diseases we never face. We are a blessed people living in a blessed time! When people try to tell you how bad things are I encourage you to listen, gain proper perspective, and pray. My friend Patrick Mead recently posted on social media that everyone should take the time to read Revelation (out loud if possible) to remind ourselves that in the end God has the final say and that we will all be okay. Let us all remember, fear does not come from God. We should be working every day to be more like Jesus and to carry out our calling to be about our Fathers business. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 Keep the faith, Greg
