The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, simply known as the EIWA, is both the largest and oldest

wrestling league in the country. The 2019 EIWA Championships mark the 115th time the conference has held this prestigious event.

Hofstra, which had enjoyed a dominant 12-year tenure in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) for wrestling, winning 11 conference championships including the last two, joined the highly-competitive academic and athletic EIWA in 2013-14. The Pride had sent a total of 80 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, earned 17 All-American honors and won 50 individual conference titles during their 12-years in theCAA.Initsfirstseason,Hofstracrownedone EIWA champion in Joe Booth, had one runner-up in Luke Vaith, and sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships. In 2017-18, Hofstra’s Michael Hughes placed second in the EIWA Championships at 285-pounds and earned NCAA All-America honors with a sixth-place finishinthenationaltournamentinCleveland, Ohio.

Current EIWA membership includes: Ivy League members Brown University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Harvard University, Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania; Patriot League members American University, Bucknell University, Lehigh University, Army West Point, and the United States Naval Academy; Northeast Conference (NEC) member Sacred Heart University; Centennial Conference member Franklin and Marshall, which wrestles on the Division I level; and former CAA wrestling members Hofstra University, Drexel University and Binghamton University.

In the autumn of 1904 a few students from several colleges in the East met and proposed the creation of a group to organize intercollegiate wrestling as a sport. The students were gentlemen scholars from four private endowment schools. The association they formed, using as models the existing bodies related to intercollegiate athletics, football and gymnastics, has endured and celebrated its existence with an annual championship for more than a century.

The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association was born on April 7, 1905 with itsfirstmeetingatthefirsttournamentinWeightman Hall on the Penn campus in Philadelphia. Three meetings were held each year after the inaugural year; once just before the tournament, once just after the meet, and once in October at which a new tourney site was selected.

Remaining strictly a student organization for

three-and-a-half decades, the group gradually assumed the surname “Eastern” to distinguish itself from the faculty-controlled “Western” Association, now known as the Big Ten. Ultimately, after the 1939 meet, the students capitulated to faculty control and the Eastern College Athletic Conference, organized in January 1938, provided formal structure for the EIWA until 2012 as an allied entity of the ECAC. The Patriot League now oversees the EIWA.

Binghamton University will host this year’s 2019 EIWA Championships on March 8-9. Hofstra University hosted the 2018 EIWA Championship at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Center.

Lehigh has won more EIWA titles than any otherschool, includingastringoffiveinarow from 2002-2006. The Big Red of Cornell, which has won 25 EIWA titles, had its streak of 11 consecutive EIWA champi-onships snapped in 2018. Columbia and Pennsylvania have each competed in 114 EIWA Championship Tournaments with Princeton (112), Cornell (110) and Lehigh (106) close behind. Lehigh has won 35 team titles while Cornell has captured 25.

The EIWA, which received 55 bids including 47 automatic allocation bids to the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. The EIWA earned nine All-American honors including one national champion. The 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be held at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from March 21-23.

The history of Hofstra Wrestling, which dates back more than 60 years, began as a club team in 1946 and grew quickly to become nationally recognized within two

decades. The first season of Hofstra Wrestling saw Walter “Brick” Stone as the team’s head coach. In its first season as a club team, Hofstra went undefeated in six matches. Home matches were held at Hempstead High School. Three members who helped initiate the first team were Dick Bemson, Frank Fusco and Jim Geiger.

Wrestling became a varsity sport during the 1947-48 season. That year Hofstra entered the NCAA Championships held at Lehigh University after compiling a 5-2-1 record. Under Stone’s direction, the wrestlers set a school record of 16 straight victories during the early 1950s. The 1951-52 squad suffered only two losses en route to a 10-2 season. One of the early program’s outstanding wrestlers was Art Strunk. The next Hofstra wrestlers to enter the national spotlight were Dan Notine and Pete Damone. In 1956 Notine became the first Hofstra wrestler to capture a coveted Middle Atlantic Conference Championship. Damone replaced Stone as the team’s coach in 1960. The early tradition of success continued during Damone’s six-year reign as head coach. Damone produced several fine wrestlers, including Don Hannon (‘60), Tom Haseman (‘61), Dick Snyder (‘63) and Ken Robinson (‘64). The 1965-66 squad won the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championship and crowned its first Metro title winner, Art Rudolph. In 1966 Bob Getchell became the program’s third coach. Getchell’s first squad produced two Metro Conference winners, Butch Jemmott and Ken Robinson. His second team won the Metro title with Jemmott, Dave Berman and Marty Willigan all taking individual titles, and wrestlers such as Steve Molello offering great contributions to the team. Willigan was named the 1968 Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. He then went on to the NCAA Championships where he took fourth place, becoming Hofstra’s first All-American. In 1969 the team finished third in the Metropolitan and Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Willigan captured second place in the NCAA Championships, losing in the final round to Iowa State’s legendary Dan Gable, the top wrestler in the United States. Gable would later coach Hofstra’s current head coach, Tom Ryan, while he attended Iowa. The wrestling program continued to develop under Getchell’s direction. Joel Kislin became Hofstra’s second All-American when he placed third at the NCAA Championships in 1973.

In 1972-73, Hofstra hosted the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships and placed second. In the mid-1970s, standouts Nick Gallo, a 126-pounder, and Don Mayorga, a heavyweight, began to make their presence felt. They powered Hofstra to three East Coast Conference Championships. (The Middle Atlantic Conference formed the East Coast Conference during this time.) Gallo went on to become an alternate for the United States team in the 1976 Olympic Games. In 1977 he captured the NCAA Championship at 126 pounds. He also earned the Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler Award. Bob Getchell then left the coaching ranks to become Hofstra’s Director of Athletics. Al Bevilacqua replaced him and continued the winning tradition. Hofstra won six straight ECC Championships from 1975 through 1980. After missing a year at the top in 1981, Hofstra captured two more titles in 1982 and 1983. Hofstra standout Nick Gallo returned to his alma mater in 1979 to direct the program. In his five years at Hofstra, the team posted a 57-32 record and captured three ECC championships. As head coach, Gallo sent 11 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. Among these 11, Ed Pidgeon, a 1981 All-American, finished fourth nationally while Peter Capone, a two-time All-American, finished seventh and second at the NCAAs. Joe Bavaro took over the reigns as head coach from 1984 through 1987, and led the Dutchmen to another ECC Championship in 1985. Under Bavaro’s leadership, Capone, a 167-pounder, was named the ECC Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. Mike Arena, a 150-pounder and three-time conference champion, was also named the ECC Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler under Bavaro. In 1987 former Hofstra wrestler and three-time conference champion Tony Arena replaced Joe Bavaro as head of the Hofstra Wrestling program. In his two years at Hofstra, Arena led the team to a 15-17-1 record. Javier Armengau returned to his alma mater in 1989 to take over the Flying Dutchmen program. Armengau wrestled under Gallo and Bavaro and was a three-time captain. As coach at Hofstra, Armengau guided wrestlers such as Ralph Tubello to outstanding careers. The 1992-93 season saw Tubello break 100 career wins and freshman Jason Wartinger become Hofstra’s second first team freshman All-American. (The first was Mike Hogan in 1977.) Tom Ryan, a Long Island native and a two-time All-American at Iowa, took over the reigns of the program in 1995. Ryan brought in fine recruiting classes and in 1997 was able to coach three wrestlers – Joe Catalanotto, Ryan Edmundson and Mike

Quaglio – to NCAA Tournament berths. Catalanotto won an automatic berth by winning the 126-pound title at the ECWA Championships, while Quaglio and Edmundson were at-large selections. In 1998 the Dutchmen were again well represented at the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Eric Schmiesing and senior Russell Jones both received at-large bids, while junior James Hieronymous and senior Mike Quaglio received automatic bids as ECWA Champions. Hofstra finished the year ranked 24th in the NCAA dual meet rankings. In 1999 Hofstra Wrestling reached new heights. Hofstra placed second at the ECWA Championships and crowned five individual champions who would represent the conference at the NCAA Championships. Roman Fleszar, Jason DeBruin, Eric Schmiesing and Zach Miller won four out of the first five weight classes, and a victory by Russell Jones gave the Flying Dutchmen their five champions. Roman Fleszar and Eric Schmiesing advanced to the quarterfinals at the NCAA Championships, lifting the Flying Dutchmen to a 26th-place finish out of the 79 competing institutions. Jason DeBruin was also named New York State Freshman of the Year after compiling a 43-8 record.

Hofstra met and surpassed its 1999 accomplishments in 2000. The Pride crowned four ECWA Champions, Fleszar, Schmiesing, DeBruin and Rob Anspach, and sent six wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament. Fleszar and Schmiesing each placed at their respective weight classes, becoming Hofstra’s first All-American wrestlers since 1985. As a team, Hofstra placed 21 out of 73 teams. The Pride also won the New York State Championship for the second time in three years.

2001 saw Hofstra win its ninth ECWA Championship and first since 1983, and sent a then school-record seven wrestlers (Tom Noto, Roman Fleszar, Eric Schmiesing, Dennis Papadatos, Jason DeBruin, Noel Thompson and Rob Anspach) to the NCAA Tournament. Fleszar and Schmiesing repeated as All-Americans and the team placed 22nd overall at the NCAA. On the year, Hofstra finished ranked 15th in the nation. Tom Ryan

was named ECWA Coach of the Year for the second straight year. The 2000-01 season also marked the final season of the ECWA, as the league merged with the Colonial Athletic Association beginning with the 2001-02 season. The Pride won the Colonial Athletic Association title in 2002 and sent seven wrestlers (Tom Noto, Jon Masa, Jason DeBruin, Paul Siemon, John Garriques, Ralph Everett and Chris Skretkowicz) to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. Noto, Masa and DeBruin each won individual championships at the CAA Tournament with DeBruin, the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler, becoming Hofstra’s first four-time conference champion. Skretkowicz was named the CAA Rookie of the Year, while Tom Ryan was the CAA Co-Coach of the Year.

The 2002-03 season once again saw Hofstra surpass the achievements of the last season as the team won the Colonial Athletic Association Championship for the second straight year, sent a school-record eight wrestlers (Pat Flynn, Ricky LaForge, Jon Masa, Mike Patrovich, Noel Thompson, Ralph Everett, Brad Christie and Chris Skretkowicz) to the NCAA Championships, and saw Masa and Skretkowicz come home All-Americans. In addition, LaForge was the CAA Championships co-Most Outstanding Wrestler and Tom Ryan won his fourth consecutive conference coach of the year award.

In 2003-04 the Pride continued their winning ways with a 15-5 record in duals, extended their conference match winning streak to 34 by posting an 8-0 conference dual record,

captured their third consecutive CAA Championship and in the process had four champions and tied the school mark by sending eight wrestlers (Tom Noto, John Manarte, James Strouse, Paul Siemon, Ralph Everett, Noel Thompson, Brad Christie, and Chris Skretkowicz) to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis. Skretkowicz, who was the CAA Wrestler of the Year, placed fifth to capture his second All-American award as Hofstra finished 20th in the final NCAA Championship standings. Coach Tom Ryan added his fifth straight conference Coach of the Year award to his trophy case.

champions, break the school-record with nine NCAA qualifiers (Dave Tomasette, Charles Griffin, Ricky LaForge, Jon Masa, James Strouse, Mike Patrovich, Paul Siemon, Joe Rovelli, Chris Skretkowicz), place 17th at the NCAA’s as a team and compile a 13-5 dual meet record. Masa, who was named the CAA Wrestler of the Year, placed third at the NCAA Championship to earn All-America honors for the second time in his career. Hofstra swept the CAA awards as in addition to Masa, Griffin was named the CAA Rookie of the Year and Coach Ryan took home his sixth straight (four CAA and two ECWA) conference Coach of the Year Award.

In 2005-06 the Pride took a giant leap toward the top 10 and finished in 11th place at the NCAA Championships, just one point out of a tie for ninth place. Hofstra, which prepared for the Championships with a challenging schedule all season long as its 11-9 dual meet record indicates and captured its fifth consecutive CAA title, winning seven individual titles and qualifying eight wrestlers for nationals. In addition, the Pride, for the first time in school history, had three All-Americans in Jon Masa, Mike Patrovich and Chris Weidman, and recorded the highest team finish (11th) and most points (52.3) at nationals. Patrovich, who finished fourth at the NCAA Championships, would earn CAA Wrestler of the Year honors, Masa was named the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Wrestler, and Tom Ryan was named the CAA Coach of the Year.

The 2006-07 season was another year for the record books. Under first-year coach Tom Shifflet the Pride set several school records including four All-Americans (Charles Griffin, Chris Weidman, James Strouse and Mike Patrovich) and a best-ever seventh-place finish at the NCAA championships. The tone of the season was set early when the Pride, competing against one of the toughest schedules in school history, defeated #1 Minnesota in the second week of the season at the Northeast Duals. Hofstra would wrestle 11 nationally-ranked opponents and post an 18-4-2 record in dual matches. The team won a sixth consecutive CAA title, posted a 3-2 record and a sixth place finish at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a ninth-place finish at the 47-team Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational with four Pride wrestlers placing in the top seven. Griffin would be named the CAA Wrestler of the Year, Patrovich the CAA Championship Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler, Ruggirello the CAA Rookie of the Year, and Shifflet the CAA Coach of the Year. In 2007-08 the Pride posted their 11th consecutive winning season with a 13-8 record including victories over nationally-ranked opponents Iowa State (4th), Edinboro (13th), Old Dominion (22nd), Bloomsburg (25th) and Harvard (25th). They also went 2-1 at the Northeast Duals, placed third in the Southern Scuffle and 10th at the Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational. Hofstra continued its conference excellence, extending its league undefeated dual match streak to 60 (59-0-1) by posting a perfect 6-0 regular season and then capturing its seventh consecutive CAA Championship and the eighth straight conference title overall. The Pride captured three individual CAA titles and Charles Griffin was named the CAA Wrestler of the Year for the second consecutive season. Seven Hofstra wrestlers competed in the NCAA Championships with Griffin (3rd) and Alton Lucas (8th) earning All-America honors and Lou Ruggirello, who became Hofstra’s first top-ranked wrestler early in the season, winning the Gorrarian Award at the national championships for the most pins in the shortest amount of time. The 2008-09 season was a rebuilding year for the Pride with six first-time starters making their debut for Hofstra. The Pride defeated #7 Penn State and battled a pair of #5 teams in Missouri and Ohio State down to the wire before falling. But Hofstra’s 63-conference match undefeated streak, including 60

consecutive league wins came to an end in a loss to #21 Old Dominion at the CAA Duals. But the Pride regrouped for the CAA Championships to capture three individual conference titles, their eighth consecutive CAA team title and the ninth straight conference championship. Hofstra, which finished the regular season with a 10-6 overall mark and a 5-1 record in CAA duals, sent eight wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis. Red-shirt freshman P.J. Gillespie was named the 2009 CAA Rookie of the Year, Tom Shifflet was voted the CAA Coach of the Year and newcomers Steve Bonanno, Justin Accordino, Ben Clymer, Jordan Enck and Gillespie were named to the CAA All-Freshman team. The 2009-10 season, on paper, had great potential. Unfortunately, injuries dictated a a different finish. After just two weeks of the season, three starters were done, two to injuries and one to a red-shirt, and by the first week of January a fourth starter was finished for the year. With a shuffling, inexperienced line-up, the Pride battled through a 6-12-2 season including a 4-3 mark in the CAA. Hofstra’s streak of nine consecutive conference titles, including eight in the CAA, ended as the Pride placed fifth at the conference championships. Three Hofstra wrestlers, Jonny Bonilla-Bowman, P.J. Gillespie and Ben Clymer, qualified for the NCAA Championships. Freshmen Luke Vaith and Paul Snyder were named to the CAA All-Rookie team at 133 and 285 pounds, respectively. The Pride rebounded during the 2010-11 season and returned two wrestlers to the NCAA Championship All-America stand. Hofstra, wrestling a challenging schedule that included five nationally-ranked opponents including top-ranked Cornell, posted a 14-4-1 dual match record including a 5-1 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Pride’s regular season tournaments prepared them for the post-season as Hofstra placed 11th at the Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Invitational, ninth at The Southern Scuffle, and fifth at the New York State Championships. Hofstra returned to the top of the CAA, after a one-year absence, recording four conference champions in Lou Ruggirello, Ryan Patrovich, Ben Clymer and Paul Snyder. Three more Pride grapplers, Steve Bonanno (NWCA All-Academic), Vince Varela and P.J. Gillespie, also qualified for the NCAA Championships bringing the Hofstra total to seven. Ruggirello, who ended his illustrious career by winning his fourth conference title and earning Capital One-CoSIDA Academic

All-America and NWCA All-Academic honors, reached the NCAA Championship All-American stand, placing seventh at 133 pounds. Gillespie also reached the All-American stand for the first time, placing eighth at 165 pounds. The 2011-12 season marked a change in coaching leadership as alumnus Rob Anspach moved over to the head chair after nine seasons as an assistant coach. Anspach became the first Pride wrestling coach to win his first 10 dual matches on the way to a 12-3 season, a 5-1 CAA regular season and the conference championship for the 11th time in 12 years. The Pride placed ninth at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga and 10th at the Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Invitational. Hofstra grabbed its 10th CAA title in the past 11 years as Steve Bonanno at 125, Luke Vaith at 141, P.J. Gillespie at 165 and Ben Clymer at 184 brought home conference titles. Jamie Franco and Justin Accordino would join the four CAA champions in the NCAA Championships where Bonanno and Accordino would earn All-America honors. Bonanno would finish eight at 125 pounds with Accordino placing sixth at 149 pounds. Bonanno would also earn several academic honors including the CAA Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NWCA All-Academic, Capital One-CoSIDA All-District At-Large first team and Capital One-CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large second team. The 2012-13 season marked the final season of CAA Wrestling and the Pride prepped for the final championship by wrestling one of the most challenging schedules in school history. Eleven top 25 opponents, including six matches from the top 10, dotted the Hofstra schedule which, along with several key injuries, led the Pride to a 6-15 dual match record. But that experience also guided Hofstra to a 4-2 conference regular season record and later to Hofstra’s third consecutive CAA title and the 12th conference title in 13 years. Senior Steve Bonanno at 125 and junior Jamie Franco at 133 captured league titles and were joined in the NCAA Championships in Des Moines by junior 141-pounder Luke Vaith, who received an at-large bid. Coach Rob Anspach was named CAA Coach of the Year for his efforts. Like his junior year, Bonanno would also earn several academic honors including the CAA Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NWCA All-Academic, Capital One-CoSIDA All-District At-Large first team and Capital One-CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large first team. After several teams left the CAA, it was announced in April, 2013 that the CAA would no longer sponsor wrestling and that Hofstra would join the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) beginning in 2013-14. The 18-team EIWA includes many of the top wrestling programs in the east. Six top 25 opponents were on the schedule for a rebuilding team. The Pride recorded a 4-3 slate in the EIWA and 6-10 overall mark. Hofstra finished second to Cornell in the New York State

Collegiate Championships and placed fourth in the EIWA Championships, sending four Pride wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City. Graduate-student Joe Booth became the first Hofstra grappler to win a EIWA title, winning in sudden victory at 165 pounds. He led seniors Jamie Franco and Luke Vaith and junior Cody Ruggirello into the national tournament. Ruggirello would earn NWCA All-Academic honors. A new era began in 2014-15 when Hofstra alumnus Dennis Papadatos was named the 12th head wrestling coach in the program’s history in August 2014. His first season featured an added emphasis on commitment and dedication, both on the mat and off. While the Pride recorded five victories there were numerous team and individual highlights during the season including a second-place finish at the New York State Championships with three individual champions in Jamel Hudson at 141, Cody Ruggirello at 149 and Michael Hughes at 285.Hofstra placed 13th in the EIWA Championships and two wrestlers, Hudson and Ruggirello, qualified and competed in the NCAA Championships in St. Louis.

In 2015-16, Hofstra University served as proud hosts for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship at Madison Square Garden. The Championship was a great success with the third highest attendance in NCAA history. The Pride again recorded five victories, placed 13th in the EIWA Championships and sent two wrestlers, Jamel Hudson and Michael Hughes, to the NCAA Championship. Hughes would capture the Bearcat Open and the New York State Championship titles during the regular season. In 2016-17, Hofstra recorded six victories and placed 14th in the EIWA Championships with freshman Vinny Vespa finishing fifth at 133 pounds. In 2017-18, the Pride placed 13th in the EIWA Championships with three wrestlers, senior Michael Hughes (2nd at 285), junior Ryan Burkert (8th at 149) and sophomore Sage Heller (8th in 174), placing. Hughes would go on to the NCAA Championships and earn All-American honors with a sixth-place finish after being seeded 11th.

The Hofstra University wrestling program is proud to honor the memory of an American hero FDNY Deputy Chief Ray Downey with the Ray Downey Memorial Scholarship.

Chief Downey, who served as Chief of Special Operations Command, lost his life heroically during the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Ray Downey was appointed to the FDNY on April 7, 1962. In August 2001, he was placed in charge of all SOC (Special Operations Command) operations - Rescue, Squad, Haz Mat and Marine - and promoted to Deputy Chief. Chief Downey’s phenomenal 39-year career with the FDNY was built upon success after success and rescue after rescue. One of the most - if not the most decorated men in the Department, Chief Downey received five individual medals for valor and 16 unit citations.

A devoted family man who lived in Deer Park, New York, with his wife, Rosalie; father of five married children, Joseph, Marie, Chuck, Ray Jr. and Kathy; and adored grandfather of nine, Chief Downey was an avid fan of the sport of wrestling and supporter of the Hofstra wrestling program, where his sons Joe and Ray Jr. were outstanding athletes. Chief Downey loved wrestling, and he always attended their matches. He continued to support the Hofstra wrestling program long after his sons graduated.

After his passing, the Downey family, longtime supporters of Hofstra University and the Pride wrestling program, created a scholarship fund to honor Chief Downey’s memory. Funds contributed are used to endow scholarships in Chief Downey’s name and will provide financial assistance to the Hofstra University wrestling program. Chief Downey’s sons, Joseph, Chuck and Ray Jr., were successful athletes at Deer Park High School, and earned bachelor’s degrees from respected universities through athletic scholarship opportunities. Recipients of these funds will demonstrate the integrity, work ethic, discipline and courage that Deputy Chief Raymond Downey exemplified throughout his life. The 2018 recipient of the Ray Downey Scholarship Award was Michael Hughes from Smithtown, New York.
