Preparing the Paste Mix

Bookbinding Glue

This extra-strength glue can beused directly on book parts suchas the spine and joint to preventthem from cracking or breaking.

CAUTION: If you don’t have bookbinding glue, you can replace it with wood glue. However, wood glue may crack or peel over time, so werecommend using bookbinding glue if possible.

Starch Paste

Equal parts: Glue Starch Paste Water

This mix is used on the Pastedown and other broad areas.

CAUTION: If using your own cloth for the bookcover, the paste may soak through silk orsynthetic materials and wrinkle the fabric. We recommend omitting the glue when mixingthe paste to apply to these types of fabrics.

Pour the glue and paste intoa vat and mix well.

Slowly add water andcontinue to mix well.

Mix is ready when pastebecomes thick.

Using the Paintbrush

Always start at the center andmake each brush stroke straightoutward, like a star burst. Whenholding down the cloth with yourhand, brush away from your hand.

stain the fabric.

Cut the cheesecloth in half and stick itto the spine, centered in the middle.

If your Hobonichi Techobook is bulging from lotsof items in the pages, werecommend holding itshut with clips afterapplying the endpaper.

If you don’t have bookbindingglue, you can replace it withwood glue. However, woodglue may crack or peel overtime, so we recommend usingbookbinding glue if possible.
