From the President, Helen Lindsay I would like to thank ALL the PRESENTERS for their patience and tolerance during these trying times of studio renovations. All progress comes with a little agony but, wow, the upgrade will be fantastic and we are all learning new skills, particularly those like me who have not used studio B before. It has been hard for Craig to do promos etc and everyone who have been dodging ladders and wires. A particular thanks to David Mitchell and Jim Parish the driving forces behind this project. I feel the happy image of the radio is on the increase. Our Outside Broadcasts are being well received by the organisations where we have been present. “From Little Things, Big Things Grow” We are getting more requests for the broadcasts and our new equipment is there to be used. I had the pleasure of meeting some members of Print Radio last month who were doing an outside broadcast from the Kingston Library under Jim Parish’s guidance. Language Day was a perfect example where we proudly represented our Multi-Cultural section of the station. There are images of this event on our face book page. We are having a lot more fundraisers and I’m glad to say the numbers in attendance are building up. We try to have something for everyone. Thank you Robbo for organising the Italian night and Benni for the BBQ. It is pleasing to see the initiative of presenters. Those who donate wonderful prizes for raffles. Brett and Col are MCing an afternoon at the Bellerive Yacht Club on 1st June 2pm The Music will be supplied by Soundbites All our SPAT members are busy with the vinyls sale. ( pg 20.) Hobart Town Tea Rooms are hosting a Mad Hatters Tea Party.(Booked Out)) Our members’ draw is growing each month attracting new members and sponsors for our draw. Whilst we are building our image and fundraisers we still need a couple more big sponsors. If you walk into a shop or a car yard and they are playing our radio station ask them if they would like to sponsor us and contact us or better still grab a business card and we will contact them.

Please put Wednesday June 19th in your diary. This will be our Members and Presenters Night.

OUR LISTENERS On Sunday I was sitting next to Marga-ret. I had only briefly met Margaret before. She is an author in her 60's, very creative, well spoken, lives on her own with a couple of cats. Margaret suddenly started talking about Hobart FM. ‘I listen to it all the time, two radios in my house, and when I am driving. I love the music, easy listening. I love the presenters, their jokes and quirky habits, they are my company." " I had to go to Brisbane and missed listening to my station, so my brother helped me pick it up on the net. Everyone in Brisbane was so impressed, envious, jealous that they don't have a similar local radio station." Meet Eric. He is retired, spends a lot of time in his "man’s den" tinkering, building bits for his family. When Eric drops his wife off at my place he always asks. "How is Brenda?" "Did Malcolm enjoy his holi-day?" " How old is such and such, I'm sure I went to school with his brother?" Meet Lynne. Lynne works at the Royal Hobart Hospital. At her work they deliver samples to various places around Hobart at any time of the day. The staff love doing the deliveries because they can listen to Hobart FM whilst driving. Meet Frank. He works at Australia Post sorting mail at night. "The radio is always on Hobart FM." We have a wonderful station. A huge thank you to all our presenters and volunteers who keep our station running. We sometimes feel why am I doing this? There are so many people out there that we will never meet but if we can help them smile and sing then every second you are on radio is worthwhile. Helen .

Mul cultural For our Mul cultural presenters, I would like to just remind you of the talk to music ra o. It is roughly 50/50. You can speak in your na ve language and an English transla on for our general listeners. This is monitored by CBF. The only excep ons are when we are doing an Outside Broadcast, then the talking component is taken up with interviews and the presenter is responsible for the music, sta on ID and informa on. I would also like to emphasise the importance of le ng your community know what is happening here in Hobart. News from overseas can be accessed on TV and the internet very easily 24 hours a day. If you have a special announcement about something occurring in your na ve country that is current and relevant then by all means make the announcement but remember the idea of Com-munity Radio is to inform your community of things and events in “your community” and maybe some anecdotal stories. We are hoping to have some of our sponsorship announce-ments done in different languages so we can play them during your programs. If you can spare some me to record announcements please contact the office and let them know. To all our presenters…this is an exci ng me for Hobart FM. A new rack room (electronics), a new studio and phone system and soon a er that we will be making changes to the bathroom and having a new kitchen area. There are of course many more plans for down the track which will see a new office area and eventually a new look around the outer area of the building. We are s ll nego a ng a way to make the access friendlier for those with disabili es; let’s face it, those stairs can be pre y scary. Thanks for all your me and effort in preparing and presen ng your programs. Remember if you have program issues please be sure to contact Bob Hevey on 0409 213 511.

Mostly Folk Every Tuesday evening 6.00 – 8.00pm

Mostly Folk is a dynamic two hour radio show packed full of folk music from around the world. Hear a wide range of music, stories and interviews from our team of experienced presenters.

About the Mostly Folk Team:

Roger Joseph Roger is well known to many as Manager of Arelmedia Management, bringing exciting folk acts from around the world to Tasmania. With a degree in business, Roger worked at the ABC for sixteen years in tech and admin. Other roles he has worked in have included union organiser, electorate officer, cleaner, taxi driver and cook.

Helen Morrison Local music teacher and performer Helen Morrison joined the Mostly Folk team six years ago, having had an interest in radio since high school. With a multi- instrumental background, including harp, piano, cello and violin, and a love of all things music, Helen enjoys support-ing local and international folk acts, attending their concerts, writing reviews and playing their al-bums on Hobart FM.

Alan Raby Alan's background is in the folk dance tradition and brings a sense of rhythm and pace to his show. Alan became interested in 2010 when Malcolm Fielding put out a call on the Folk Federation of Tas-mania mailing list for someone to take over the show when he moved to Queensland, and I jumped at the chance.”

Sound Preservation Association of Tasmania Next time you are in Bellerive with an hour to kill call into SPAT. It is situated in the Old Bellerive Post Office at 19 Cambridge Road. The building is worth a look before you even discover the treasures within. The SPAT is an incorporated organisation whose aim is to identify, collect and preserve recorded sound. Over the years, the association has depended for its ex-istence on the support from its members and other generous persons for the donation of old records, tapes, cylinders and gramophones. The Centre’s main aim is to preserve our heritage of recorded sound, particularly of Tasmanian Origin. The Association was founded late in 1985, and has now in it’s possession over 60,000 records including a number of rare Edison cylinder recordings, many mantel wirelesses and gramophones. The centre has also on display number of old cameras, movie and slide projectors and memorabilia relating to sound, stage and screen. It is open 11 am to 3 pm Monday Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. When entering the museum I discovered Ray sorting a massive amount of vinyl recordings ready for the Vinyl Fair on 26th May at Almas Activities Centre. 17 Alma Street, Bellerive. The radio station will be running a 60’s 70 style milkbar called the BlueGate (remember the Greengate?) We will have Phil’s toasties, Amanda’s waffles and Helen’s famous milkshakes. Call Ray on 6245 1153. if you want to book a stall to

Every year the Community Broadcasting Foundation allocates a number of training places to the Community Media Training Organisation (RTO ID 91800). These training places allow the CMTO to plan how many accredited and non-accredited (Pathways) courses we can organise in a financial year. Training places are limited and competitive, and the CMTO is guided by the priorities of the training fund in deciding which courses will be delivered. The priorities are: - courses for broadcasters based in regional, rural and remote areas. - courses for Indigenous & ethnic community broadcasters & radio for print handicapped broadcasters. - accredited training such as Certificate II in Creative Industries and Certificate III & IV in Screen and Media. - courses which provide skills development for volunteers that have an ongoing role at your station. - courses at stations which have not hosted CMTO training previously. It is important that your station is able to meet as many of the above priorities in any course you host. You will get points for every criteria which you meet. Things you will need to complete the application: at least of 8-10 volunteers or station workers who are interested in the course (At least one in three nominated trainees must be female). - a contact at the station who will be able to coordinate the training with the CMTO. Applications due by Friday, May 23, 2019 at 17:00pm AEST If successful, training will commence from July, 2019. If you are interested please contact Kaye Payne 0412 825 967 register at the office. 62441900
