Head and Neck Cancer Support Group at Ben Taub Hospital Led by BCM Speech Pathologists The Speech Pathology Department at Ben Taub Hospital began a Head and Neck Cancer Support Group in 2015 consisting of speech pathologists Rayna Bohmann, Maria Gomez-White, and Catherine Renee Garza. Their goal is to provide support, education and encouragement to patients who are currently in treatment for head and neck cancer or have completed treatment. This support group meets quarterly and has been well attended by current and past patients as well as family members. Patients enjoy having an outlet to express their concerns and struggles as well as learn from others who have gone through and/or are going though head and neck cancer treatment. Each support group begins with a patient sharing time followed by education on a particular topic. Topics of interest have included managing secretions and reflux, assistance with returning to work, use and benefits of heat posture exchange system, and common issues with tracheoesophageal speech.
