Research Directions and Strategy

The HKUST Business School’s research mission is to conduct rigorous research that advances global

business knowledge. The School continuously strives to achieve and maintain high quality of research as

benchmarked against international standards. Our strategy is to recruit the best-qualified academics,

irrespective of their gender and country of origin, and to encourage them to develop fully in their areas of

research by providing them with appropriate resources. The School has six departments, namely,

Accounting; Economics; Finance; Information Systems, Business Statistics & Operations Management;

Management; and Marketing. There is specialization of research areas in each department to maximize

prominence, but balanced with the need for a diverse expertise to meet its teaching needs. The results of our

faculty’s cutting-edge research form a strong foundation on which the School’s excellence in teaching is

built.

The School is committed to thought leadership by disseminating its research findings and expertise relevant

to practice to the public through various channels. We encourage faculty to attend and speak in industry

conferences, and to contribute professional views on public issues through the media such as newspaper

articles. The School’s “Business Insights” initiative also facilitates faculty members to disseminate their

research findings to the practitioners, through publication of their research summaries on the School’s

website and the monthly downtown presentations.

Major Research Facilities

The School provides a good infrastructure to support faculty research, which include excellent computing

facilities, well-designed and equipped labs for behavioral studies; a comprehensive database of financial data

Page 2: HKUST business school Fact Sheet June 2012

etc. Request is being made to the University for additional space to cater for research needs for both existing

and new research areas (e.g. Experimental economics & neuroscience business research).

Besides, there are research centers that pool together faculty members with common interest to develop and

promote research programs and to attract both internal and external funding. Through the research centers,

the School has organized many research activities such as symposiums and conferences to promote academic

research as well as to reach out to the business community.

Major Achievements (2007-2012)

Throughout the years, the School and its faculty members have consistently been recognized for their

intellectual contributions both locally and internationally. Our faculty members have continued to

publish in top journals. Many of them also serve as editors or on the editorial boards of prestigious

academic journals.

Global research rankings provide summary statistics and statements about the School’s and

departments’ overall performance in academic research. The Business School as a whole is ranked no.

17 in the “UTD (UT Dallas) Top 100 World Rankings of Business Schools Based on Research

Contribution 2007-2011”. All departments* of the Business School are ranked top-20 worldwide and

no. 1 in Asia Pacific in the 2007-2012 period based on the articles published in respective academic

journals.

(* The UTD research ranking does not include journals in Economics and therefore the Economics

Department is not ranked.)

The School’s research performance is ranked no. 1 in Asia and no. 19 in the world in the most recent

Financial Times Global MBA Rankings 2012.

Research productivity has increased across departments. The success rate of the School’s application for

the CERG/GRF has been the highest among local business schools. Since 2008/09, the GRF success rate

has been over 50%.

A strong research culture, evidenced by a number of regular research activities such as research seminars

given by outstanding scholars and international conferences organized by the research centers and

departments. An example is the China Economic Development Forum organized by the Business School

in March 2011, during which the HKUST community, business professionals, academics and

policymakers shared insights on major issues of China’s economic development.

In collaboration with the University’s Institute for Advanced Study, the School invited world renowned

scholars to give talks on important topics. Examples include talks by Nobel Laureates Prof Eric

MASKIN, Prof Christopher PISSARIDES, and Prof Robert ENGLE.

The quality of PhD students has been improving, evidenced by the very good graduate placement. Below

are some examples of the job placements in the academia.

Research Directions and Strategy

We pursue state-of-the-art accounting research and aim to produce research publications in top international

journals. We have achieved our goal to be a globally recognized premier research faculty in accounting.

The department focuses on archival research, which is the mainstream methodology in contemporary

accounting research. Since the dominant research areas continue to evolve over time, the department’s

strategy is to recruit the best available candidates who are well trained in archival research methodology and

provide an excellent research environment. The environment includes databases, active workshops, and

prominent visitors. In recent years, the department’s faculty have made significant contributions and are well

recognized in research areas including corporate governance, executive compensation, financial disclosure,

valuation, financial analysts, auditing, and international accounting.

The department has been hosting the internationally recognized HKUST Accounting Symposium every year

since 1993. The symposium facilitates exchange of ideas with top international researchers and raises the

visibility of our own research.

Research Directions and Strategy

The ISOM department consists of 3 groups: information systems (IS), operations management (OM), and

business statistics. We combine world-class research and award-winning teaching to train students for

successful and productive careers in both industry and academia. We examine how technology, operations,

and statistics can be harnessed by both traditional and online companies to create a competitive edge. Faculty

members are encouraged to pursue research in their areas of specialties and to publish in the top journals in

their disciplines.

We recruit faculty who have good potential or demonstrated ability to publish in the top journals and can

teach UG/MSc/MBA students well. We bring in leading scholars from top business schools to interact with

our faculty and to conduct courses for our PhD students. Through these interactions, joint projects are

initiated and PhD students get to know senior academics in the field. We also host two research centers: (1)

Center for Marketing and Supply Chain Management, and (2) Center for E-Commerce. These centers

organize workshops/ forums where faculty members can interact with industry people to explore ideas for

research projects.

Our faculty members are involved in consultancy projects for industry, local government agencies (e.g.,

Audit Commission of HK Government; Office of the Telecommunications Authority of HK), international

agencies (e.g. United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union), and foreign government regulators

(e.g. Telecommunications Commission of Thailand; Pakistan Telecommunications Authority).

Programs Offered

The department offers courses for the BBA (Information Systems), BBA (Operations Management), BSc

(Risk Management and Business Intelligence), MSc (Information Systems Management), MBA, PhD

(Information Systems), and PhD (Operations Management/Statistics).

Research Directions and StrategyThe Department of Management (MGMT) has now gained a reputation as a leader in management research in the Asia-Pacific region, with a group of productive, high-quality, and diverse academics whose expertise covers strategic management, organization theory, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, human resource management, and business ethics. With the outstanding contributions and hard work by all faculty members, the department has become one of the Top Ten management departments in the world in terms of research productivity in top tier management journals. This is a remarkable achievement for a small department in a young university. For the most recent four years (2008-2011), the department claims the #7 ranking in the world according to the UT-Dallas survey of research publications in five premier management journals (Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal), and of course, the leader in Asia. (Please browse our department website, www.bm.ust.hk/mgmt). In addition, MGMT faculty members serve in various leadership capacities in our global academic communities such as being Associate/Senior Editors of leading academic journals such as the Strategic Management Journal. To facilitate intellectual exchange and knowledge diffusion, over the past five years, the department has hosted over 40 distinguished professors and visiting scholars who spent between a few days to several months on campus giving research seminars and interacting with faculty and PhD students. The MGMT department has also established a long-term program of collaborative research with management scholars in China through the Hang Lung Center for Organization Research, and has established a new Center for Business Strategy and Innovation to have impact on management practice and public policy formulation through its applied research. Our vision for the next stage of the development is for the department to be recognized globally as one of the leading intellectual centers of management research and education in the world. While we may not have the faculty size, critical mass, and resources to compete in all areas with our well-resourced global peers (many are elite private business schools), we aspire to be an intellectual leader in strategic areas where we can build on our faculty’s research excellence and our unique positioning in Asia.

Major Research Facilities Hang Lung Center for Organizational Research (HLCOR )

HLCOR was established in January 1998; and its mission is to improve the practice of management in Chinese and multinational firms doing business in Greater China, and Chinese companies doing business

globally by conducting rigorous research and engaging in exchanges among a network of business leaders and university scholars. During 2007-2012, HLCOR sponsored several research workshops and conferences organized by the International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR); and provided support to our PhD students for attending the annual meeting of the Academy of Management. HLCOR has also sponsored the publishing of an international journal, Management and Organization Review (MOR) since 2005.

Center for Business Strategy and Innovation (CBSI) CBSI was established in May 2008; and its mission is to be a thought leader in the area of business strategy and innovation that creates cutting-edge knowledge and makes important contributions to the economic development of Hong Kong and China through its impact on management practice and public policy formulation. CBSI has sponsored several research projects on issues related to business strategy and innovation with desirable achievement: published 16 peer reviewed articles and 39 newspaper articles, and sponsored over 25 research seminars.

Research Directions and Strategy

There are 2 basic areas of research in the department: 1) behavioral research, and 2) quantitative modeling.

Behavioral colleagues seek to obtain psychology-based insights into the ways consumers process

information, and the consequences of such information processing for marketing-related issues. The

quantitative modelers view marketing issues from the perspectives of both game theory and applied

econometrics. That said, no particular area or direction is emphasized. Rather, the goal is to conduct research

of the highest quality that it will be published in top tier journals, something faculty members have been very

successful in doing.

Major Research Facilities

B ehavioral L ab

With the school’s support, the department has created a behavioral lab to facilitate our research. Our lab

is used extensively for conducting behavioral experiments. During 2007-2012, over 100 experiments

were run. We have added new eye-tracking equipment in the lab, increasing the scope of measures we

can use in our experiments. More recently, for the modelers, we have also obtained a number of different

databases, such as Advertising-spending automotive USA, Asia Pacific Automotive Sales Forecast and a

database on the Product-harm crisis in China.

Center for Marketing and Supply Chain Management

The Center was established in 2005 with the generous support of the Fung Foundation Ltd. The mission

of the Center is to a) promote and support research in marketing, supply chain management and related

technologies at the HKUST Business School, with the goal of increasing the visibility and prestige of the

School’s leadership in these areas, and b) further cement the global academic leadership of the HKUST

Business School in the areas of marketing and supply chain management. In addition to supporting

Page 20: HKUST business school Fact Sheet June 2012

individual research projects, the Center funds a keynote annual Marketing Camp every December. The

event attracts renowned faculty from all over the world. The Camp fosters a highly stimulating

intellectual environment, encouraging a mutual sharing of research ideas and knowledge between the

visiting professors and the HKUST Marketing group.

Major Achievements (2007-2012)

The Marketing department’s research output in the 5-year period (beginning of 2007 to the end of 2011)

is ranked number 9 in the world, according to the publicly available research rankings produced by the

University of Texas at Dallas.

During this period, we have published 87 articles in 2007-2012, and also published/edited 18 books.

We also have been very successful in obtaining RGC grants. Most, and in some years all , of our

applications have been funded.

Three Associate Editors in leading journals (Rashmi Adaval and Jaideep Sengupta: Journal of Consumer

Research; Liang Guo: Management Science).

Editorial Board Memberships in leading journals (Liang Guo: Marketing Science; Anirban

Mukhopadhyay: Journal of Consumer Research; Jaideep Sengupta: Journal of Marketing Research).

Individual faculty recognition: Liang GUO was a finalist for the prestigious John Little Best Paper

Award in 2008.

Individual faculty recognition: Anirban MUKHOPADHYAY received the prestigious Society for

Consumer Psychology Early Career Award in 2011.

Professors GUO and MUKHOPADHYAY were invited to the Young Scholars’ Conference organized

by the Marketing Science Institute in 2009. Only 30 such scholars across the world were invited, making

this an extremely selected group of young scholars who have been identified as the “leaders of the next

generation of marketing academics” based on research productivity. Very few universities had two

faculty on the list, as we at HKUST did.

Jaideep SENGUPTA was invited to the AMA-Sheth Doctoral Consortium as a Faculty Fellow in 2010 and again in 2012. This consortium annually

brings together outstanding PhD students in marketing with the world’s “most distinguished marketing faculty.”
