Whirlwind Tour of Human Kinetics Europe

The Queen’s Jubilee, the 2012 London Olym-

pics, the Euro meltdown . . . it’s a busy old time in the United Kingdom!

We live in interesting times. What a cliché that is. It’s a pity, because, boy, do we live in interesting times!

Sales through Human Kinetics Europe finished up 8% this fiscal year compared with last year, but there’ll be no resting on laurels. Blink and you’ll miss a new momen-tous change in government policy, commerce, education or technology. Blink and you’ll miss a mini-revolution.

The 2011-12 year saw Waterstone’s, the last major UK high street book retailer, being bought by a Russian billionaire, Alexander Mamut. We will see whether he has the same deep pockets as the billionaires buying up English premier league football clubs, or whether the management gets changed quite so frequently. Meanwhile, online Human Kinetics and many other publishers have been developing nice sales through a new Inter-net start-up, The Book Depository, an exciting competitor to Amazon . . . until Amazon bought

The Book Depository in October 2011. Amazon has its tentacles in e-books as well, through its market-leading device, the Kindle. Kindle sales alongside sales through other e-book platforms (MyiLibrary, Dawsonera, iBookstore and many others) have allowed Human Kinetics to increase our percentage of e-book sales gradually year on year, month on month. Currently, those sales represent 5% of total sales for the European office, but that percentage is set to grow exponentially, and early forecasts suggest e-books will account for 25% to 40% of all sales within 5 years.

The UK’s coalition government has made some radical changes in both university and school education. University tuition fees have virtually trebled to £9,000. And changes to school education are too numerous to mention, but to those of us with an interest in sport, the key change is the move toward more competi-tive sport and a move away from prizes for all. The introduction of the School Games aims to create a real sporting legacy, that Holy Grail word that the UK has been promising to deliver since 2005, when we won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

Further afield are various changes and chal-lenges. Human Kinetics Europe looks after the UK and the rest of Europe, the Middle East and

North Africa: 75 countries in all, and each sees unique trends and issues. Not surprisingly, our sales in Greece have collapsed whilst the former Yugoslavian countries continue to recover. And with international funding and support, sales are expanding. The Arab Spring has also affected business whilst in the long term we believe that the Middle East is a strong emerging market for Human Kinetics. Egyptian sales have taken a tumble, but we’re seeing great growth in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar. In 2010, Qatar saw the world’s highest growth rate (19.4%) and the high-est GDP per capita. Qatar are sending their first female athlete to the London Olympics, and in many other ways, they’re showing a real desire for progress and education. Human Kinetics staff visited the Aspira Sports Academy in Doha this March and were blown away by their facilities and ambition.

That’s our whirlwind tour of Human Kinetics Europe and our challenges and opportunities. We have a fun-packed, rain-filled summer ahead of us, with the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics and Paralympics. That’s a lot of flag waving, but we’re well prepared!

HK editors and authors are leaders in their fields, and several have been recognized for their

contributions. We feature these achievements in each issue of HK Today. We’d be delighted to share your honors and awards in this sec-tion. Please send Holly Gilly any information for placement in upcoming newsletters.

In the previous issue of HK Today, we reported on kelly amonte hiller’s tremendous success as coach of the Northwestern lacrosse team. Her streak continued through the spring. On May 27, Amonte Hiller’s Wildcats won their seventh NCAA title in the past eight seasons. In October 2012, Amonte Hiller will be inducted into the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame for her performance as a player at Maryland. Amonte Hiller is author of Winning Women’s Lacrosse.

We also noted in our previous issue Ralph Weekly’s induction into the National Fastpitch Coaches Hall of Fame. Weekly proved the honor was

deserved as the Tennessee Lady Vols softball team returned to the Women’s College World Series for the fifth time in program history after defeating No. 11 Georgia at the end of May. The Lady Vols (52-14) were eventually defeated by Oregon. Congratulations to coaches ralph and karen weekly, authors of the newly released High-Scoring Softball, for amassing more than 50 wins in a season for the seventh time.

robert Baker was elected president of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM). The NASSM promotes, stimulates, and encourages study, research, scholarly writing, and professional development in the area of sport management. Baker’s 1-year term began on May 25, 2012. Baker is coauthor with Craig Esherick of Fundamentals of Sport Management, expected to be published in January 2013.

Congratulations to tennis coaching legend nick Bollettieri, who will be inducted into the Tennis

The National Dance Education Organization selected Judi Fey to receive NDEO’s Outstanding Leadership Award for 2012. This honor recognizes Fey’s ongoing commitment to advancing the field of dance education as well her numerous contributions to dance throughout Maryland. The

award will be presented at the 2012 conference held in Los Angeles. Fey is the author of Dance Units for Middle School.

World champion 400-meter hurdler Dai Greene has teamed up with HK author Dr. Costas kara-georghis (Inside Sport Psychology) and music producer Redlight to record his own motivational track to enable him to perform at his peak and go for gold at the forthcoming London Olympics. The BBC news team joined all three in the Red Bull Studios to get an insight into how it works. You can watch a brief clip on the BBC iPlayer at www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18294292.

HK author Greg whyte (Practical ECG for Exer-cise Science and Sports Medicine), along with Dr. Jack Kreindler, addressed the topic of pain in a new television program broadcast by the BBC. The two did a series of fun, often painful, experiments to demonstrate some key facts about chronic back pain, osteoarthritis, and acute pain. See more at http://humankinetics.me/2012/05/30/how-to-beat-pain.

Thanks largely to the efforts of meg stone and michael stone, the United States Olympic Com-

mittee has officially designated East Tennessee State University as a U.S. Olympic training site for weightlifting. Meg is the director of the training site. Interested weightlifters must meet specific eligibility criteria set forth by the USOC, USA Weightlifting, and ETSU. Then, Mike Stone will design a rigorous training program specific to each qualified athlete. The Stones are coauthors with William Sands of Principles and Practice of Resistance Training.

Patrick milroy, coauthor with Joe Puleo of Running Anatomy, recently completed a coast-to-coast bicycle ride across the United States. Milroy, along with rider Peter Holland and a support crew of Martin Mann and Barry Linaker, cycled more than 3,000 miles to raise money for the more than 70,000 children with disabilities in the UK who are waiting for the right wheelchair. Please see http://web.mac.com/spemberton/iWeb/Wheels%20for%20Wheels/Welcome.html for complete information on the cause and the ride, which began on April 6, 2012, and was completed on May 10.

With the h igh l y acclaimed Physi-

that, the two organizations recently announced a new publishing partnership to advance the professions of health, physical education, sport, and dance. This partnership enables the devel-opment of innovative educational products, including print and electronic books and online continuing education courses, for delivery to a worldwide audience.

AAHPERD and HK are excited about the partnership, because both organizations are committed to providing accurate information and

education, packaged and delivered at affordable prices through cutting-edge technology. With AAHPERD’s educational expertise and HK’s international reach, AAHPERD will enter new markets they never imagined before. The part-nership will allow AAHPERD with its authoritative role and HK with its publishing expertise to build outstanding new resources that can be delivered

across multiple media platforms.AAHPERD is the largest organization of

professionals involved in physical education, recreation, fitness, dance, health promotion, and related specialties, and Human Kinetics is the world’s largest publisher in the areas of physical activity. Both share a similar mission. Each also works with many of the same organizations, such as the Cooper Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

I’ll be working closely with AAHPERD to develop new products. In my mind, the beneficiaries of this agreement will be AAHPERD members, HK customers and authors, and all those who serve our profession, because ultimately, the health of our nation will be positively influenced by the resources we develop and the people who use them.

We’ll share information about specific initia-tives and projects in the coming months as details are finalized.

As with any business, technology is at the

heart of the daily opera-tions here at Human Kinetics. This includes maintaining the infrastruc-ture and tools for staff, building applications and websites, and providing technical support to our customers.

As you read in Brian’s article, Human Kinetics last year made a significant investment by build-ing a new technology center. This center forms a solid foundation to support every aspect of our technology for the next 10 years. The proj-ect included office space for technical workers as well as a new world-class data center. The data center officially opened on June 11, 2011, with the resiliency to withstand an F3 tornado and redundancies in place to allow continuous operations through power outages, Internet connection problems, and major equipment failures. The data center includes equipment to host numerous websites; 80 terabytes of space to store content such as books, videos, and applications; and multi-layered and multi-vendor security solutions to protect that content.

None of the infrastructure, desktops, software, websites, application development, or technical support happens without a highly qualified and dedicated staff. The technology group has 30 staff members with an average service time of close to 8 years. This stability ensures that Human Kinetics can rapidly address changes in technology. We have staff that are recognized experts in their fields and have been asked to share their expertise through whitepapers, beta-testing programs, and even presentations at major technology events like Cisco Live.

As consumer use of tablet computers and smart phones increases, the need for content that contains interactive and media-rich elements and is delivered electronically has become a

big focus for the company. Over the past few years the technology group has collaborated with the rest of the company to explore new ideas, provide support for the production of new product formats, and participate in the building of iPhone, iPad, and Kindle Fire apps. We have built this expertise internally, which allows for greater creativity, project ownership, and efficien-cies in economies of scales. To that end, we are now working on our first mobile application that will be programmed only once but that will be delivered across all three devices.

To further Human Kinetics’ ability to provide sophisticated experiences on our websites, we are working this year to modify our sites to provide a good user experience for whatever platform (mobile, desktop, tablet) our customers choose to use. An important step in this direction is a recent partnership we have established with a vendor of video content delivery that will automatically detect and adjust how our video is distributed to customers based on their device and connection to the Internet. Additionally, we are doing software upgrades and evaluating areas that can benefit from mobile optimization. All of these initiatives share a common goal of ensuring that Human Kinetics websites and content can be viewed on all devices as we move into the post-PC era.

The need for content that contains interactive and media-rich elements and is delivered electronically

has become a big focus for the company.

Pew Research finds that two-thirds of adult

Internet users now use social networking sites. These users spend 5 to 8 hours each month engaged in these sites, according to the Nielsen Company. ComScore reports that Facebook—currently the most popular

of these sites—attracts 734.2 million unique visitors a month.

Because our customers are spending an increasing amount of time using these outlets, Human Kinetics is very active with social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Pinterest. These sites allow us to connect with our followers on an ongoing basis by shar-ing information about recent releases, authors’ activities, and common interests.

As we expand our reach via social media, we invite you to do so as well. Join the online conversation by offering your insights on news, research, and trends. Tell followers about upcoming appearances or camps and other

The news you provide via these outlets can then be shared with thousands of users who are connected to Human Kinetics. Your news reaches our followers, who may then elect to engage with you directly. This presents a valuable opportunity for you to reach your core audience.

Some choose to post stories on a daily or weekly basis. Others elect to post less frequently based on specific events like speaking engagements.

No matter what your level of participation through these channels, your social media efforts provide Human Kinetics with additional and sustained means for promoting you and your book, expanding your reach, and improv-ing your sales.

I invite you to visit some of our more popular social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter to get an idea of how authors and Human Kinetics are currently exploiting these opportunities to reach customers. I also recommend connecting with your Human Kinetics marketing manager to learn more about how you might participate in these efforts or to inform us of any activity that is already under way.

Human Kinetics pro-motes itself as the

world leader in physi-cal activity, but HK also promotes physical activ-ity to those living in our own community. For 21 years, HK has sponsored the Twin Cities Twosome race each spring. “It’s a great way to give back

to the community and promote what we do as a publisher, which is to help people live healthier lives,” said Human Kinetics CEO Brian Holding.

The charitable race started with a collabora-tion between the company’s managerial team and the employee wellness committee. Both wanted to create an event to support community involvement through the company.

The race benefits nonprofit organizations that help the neediest populations in the Champaign-Urbana area. The TIMES Center assists homeless men, the Center for Women in Transition helps women and children escape from abusive homes, and the Crisis Nursery provides a haven for the children of families in crisis. Nearly $125,000 has been given to these three charities over the years.

Participation has almost doubled over the history of the race; a record high of 724 partici-pants was set in 2010. “The emphasis is on fitness and health and not how fast you can run the race,” Holding said. The race was set up to

me for becoming the co-director of the Illinois Marathon. Even a small race is a microcosm of a much larger event. (My current work) in the worldof marathoning through Marathon and Beyondmagazine takes me to marathons all overthe country. I’ve been taking mental notes for years about what would make a good event here.”

Based on the response to the array of marathon events offered in April, Seeley certainly knows what she’s doing. The weekend of races (includ-ing a 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, relay, and youth run) attracted over 20,000 runners this year. Human Kinetics is proud to be a sponsor of this event by hosting organizational meet-ings, stuffing race-day packets, and providing financial support.

include runners of all levels and to encourage participation with a friend, spouse, child, or co-worker.

The event has an open 5K run and walk, but the twosome option is what makes this race unique. Each team member runs the 5K course as a relay, so together they complete a 10K. Twosome categories include husband and wife, parent and child, and total age combinations. Former HK employee and original race organizer Jan Seeley first suggested the twosome format. “We had 5K and 10K events, but this twosome event would be unique. The rest is history,” said Seeley.

The event is organized entirely by Human Kinetics employees, with the help of partnerships and sponsorship from other community groups and businesses. An average of 85 employees volunteer their time each year to prepare for the event and man positions on race day. “I’m proud of the fact that the TCT has been and continues to be an employee initiative and that HK’s employ-ees are making this type of contribution to the community,” said HK founder Rainer Martens.

Human Kinetics has also become a corporate sponsor of a new initiative to bring a world-class marathon to the Central Illinois area. Seeley, who now publishes Marathon and Beyond, is also the co-director of the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon event, which has just completed its fourth year. “All of the years I spent working on the TCT—and other running events in town—helped prepare

Another recent investment is a $1.2 million technology center that our technology staff moved into a year ago. The technology center is home to 28 staff and 250 physical and virtual servers. The investment is critical to ensuring that HK’s websites and digital products are always up and running.

These investments are already proving their worth, because we’re producing an ever-growing array of e-books and apps. HK employees also volunteer in a variety of other ways, including passing out water at a hydration station and assisting in race-day parking and marathon organizing committees.

“We’re interested in ways that promotes a healthy community, and this is a great thing for our community,” Holding said of HK’s involve-ment with the marathon event. Next year’s marathon has been set for April 25 to 27. So if running is your thing, mark this race on your calendar and stop by HK when you’re in town.
