Under federal law, certain hospitals known as critical access hospitals may be licensed to operate "swing beds," which can be used for either inpatient medical care or for long-term care. The hospital may change the use of the beds to best fit its patient mix at any given time. Hospitals with swing beds can have no more than 25 beds total, with no more than 15 beds used for acute inpatient care at any time.

The map on the front indicates with a red square which counties have swing beds. The table below lists the number of swing beds in each of those counties.
