Annual Holiday Program
“A Twinkling Holiday”
OMNI Hotel, San Diego
NEXT MEETING
The Annual Holiday Program is
next week. Come join the festivi-
ties! There will be plenty of holi-
day music to celebrate the sea-
son... and Santa will be there for
the young and young-at-heart!
We are looking forward to seeing
all of you at this yearly event.
On a scale of one to a
thousand… how much
will you weigh after the
holidays?
Desserts provided by the
Culinary School at San
Diego’s Art Institute were
hard to resist. Pat Crow-
ell ate three. Thanks, AJ Antun, for the
yummy treats!
Today at San Diego Rotary, the Honorable
Kevin Faulconer, San Diego’s 36th mayor,
addressed a full house on his vision for
One San Diego. Focused on building a
thriving, healthy economy and innovation,
Kevin announced “San Diego is open for
business!” Delivering results for San Die-
gans, efficiency, fiscal discipline, and per-
sonal accountability top his agenda. Priori-
ties the mayor revealed: street repairs, in-
frastructure improvements, on-line access
to building permits and better partnering
with corporate employers.
Watch for “San Diego Works,” Kevin’s
employee incentive program to streamline
processes in City Hall. Kevin previewed
plans for Balboa Park’s centennial cele-
brations in 2015 before answering ques-
tions on water, the stadium, unions and the
One San Diego Foundation.
Visiting Rotarian Lee Ann Hvaglin-Smith
from Valparaiso, Indiana, was impressed
with our forward-thinking Mayor speaking
to a forward-thinking club. Chair of the
Day Jim Madaffer gave her cigars and a
bottle of Scotch.
Preceding today’s informative program
were several important announcements
and accolades:
President Michelle reported good
news that Amnon Ben-Yehuda is
recovering from brain surgery
John Wertz hawked tickets to the
Holiday Bowl games
Jenni Prisk updated us on the Peace
Committee
Bill Earley inspired us to recruit
more Rotarians on the “March to
50”
Jim Jessop distributed tokens to all,
2015 wallet calendars (in 2-font
print)
Mike Conner and Judy Thompson
generously presented PHFs to their
grandkids Tiffany and Jacob Serna
New Members Stephanie Saathoff
and Chris Deal shared their enthusi-
asm about joining Club 33. Chris is
a fourth generation San Diego Ro-
tarian, the grandson of our late Past-
president Shelly Brockett

Bert Wahlen’s politically incorrect
joke: “A new poll says 54% Americans
would repeal Obamacare. Kathleen Si-
belius, acknowledging that Obamacare
is having some rough times, suggests the
solution is to change the name.”

President Michelle wanted to share with you the
following note she received from Quench and
Connect. We joined with five other clubs to build
this much needed project.
Dear Ms. Candland --- We at Quench and Con-nect are so grateful to the Rotary Club of San Die-
go Foundation for the donation of $4500 to help fund a borehole well at St. Kirigwajjo Secondary
School in Kibaale,Uganda. Your grant stimulated
our other donors to give the balance of funds needed for this well. The borehole has now been
ordered, and will be drilled on the school campus soon after the first of the year. This borehole will
provide desperately needed clean water for nearly
1000 students at the school as well as members of the local community. I realize that this grant fits
nicely with Rotary’s current priority theme ‘Clean
Water’. I look forward to giving you a full report after the access to clean water is provided to these
students. The Head Teacher and staff at the school send you and your fellow Rotarians greet-
ings and many thanks. Best wishes ---Kathryn

CAMP ENTERPRISE 2015-LEGACY NOMINATION
NEW MEMBER NEWS
Camp Enterprise is March 19-21 2015
We are looking for Legacy Participants (high school juniors) from our members.
A Legacy Participant is a son or daughter of a Rotary member or relative, close personal relationship with your
family, neighbor, church or someone you mentor.
Please consider giving the Gift of Rotary to a high school junior you know.
Contact Michael Anderson [email protected] if you have any questions or for the
Legacy Nomination REC 2015 form.
Legacy enrollment begins NOW through Jan 31, 2015.
The nominating Rotarian needs to discuss their nomination with the high school junior AND the parents and
consider the following very important questions before submitting a nomination:
Are they even interested?
Are they available to attend the specific days in March?
Are there any school, sports or other activities that are in conflict with the camp date?
Will their school approve the time away from classes?
Finding this information out before submitting a nomination will save the Camp Enterprise Committee plenty of their
valuable time. Thank you!

STEM
This past Saturday students from Rosa Parks Elementary and Adams Elementary took part in Botball robotics
at Hoover High School. This is one of the four STEM related activities that Bink Cook and her committee are
supporting for the 12 middle and elementary schools that are part of the Hoover High School cluster. A teach-
er who was there observing from Cherokee Point Elementary was heard to say, “I don't know who at Rotary
came up with this idea, but it is fantastic. I have 23 students already signed up to participate.” Congratulations
to Bink Cook and her committee. The committee is always looking for more members to help out. Contact
Bink if you can spare some time for this worthwhile undertaking that truly does change lives of the youth.
